Dr. Roderick Bickert

MILWAUKEE — Dr. Roderick Bickert passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the age of 85.

Rod resided at Eastcastle Place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and formerly lived in Sheboygan and Green Lake, Wisconsin, Wilmette, Illinois, and Mason City, Iowa.

Rod was married for 61 wonderful years to his best friend and beloved wife, Sally Ann Bickert (nee Watson). Rod was the most loving Dad of Susan Bickert (Brooke Billick), Roderick “Rick” N. (Donna) Bickert, Jr., and Tim (Carolyn) Bickert. Rod was a proud and devoted “Papa” of Ben, Christopher and Daniel Billick; Roderick “Eric” (Brooke) Bickert, III, Samantha Bickert and Britt Bickert; and Carson and Kelsey Bickert, and was a great-grandfather of the late Roderick N. “Rory” Bickert, IV. Rod was the dear brother of Jock (Sue) Bickert and Annie (Peter) Scott and brother-in-law and dear friend of the late Robert (Jeanette) Watson. Rod is survived and loved by other relatives and the countless good friends and colleagues he had the joy of knowing over his life.

Rod was born in New York City and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore, Maryland He spent memorable summers in Cape May, New Jersey and often regaled his family with stories of his crabbing adventures along the ocean shore.

Rod lived with his family in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was proud of his high school years at Shattuck Military Academy. Rod attended the University of Iowa where he met the love of his life, Sally Watson, whom he affectionately referred to as “Gosie.”

Rod was a lifelong educator and always a respected mentor to his colleagues and students. He began his professional career in education as a social studies and history teacher in DeWitt, Iowa, where he also coached the high school football team. He was a junior high school principal in New Hampton, Iowa, and then moved to Mason City, Iowa, where he held a number of positions in the Mason City schools, beginning as principal of McKinley Elementary School and ultimately serving for eight years as superintendent of the Mason City Community School District. Along the way, while he and Sally raised a family, Rod studied at Columbia University, obtained his master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and his Ph.D. in school administration and business management from the University of Iowa.

From Mason City, Rod and Sally moved to Wilmette, Illinois, where Rod had the honor of serving as the superintendent of the New Trier Township High School District from 1974 until his retirement in 1990. While at New Trier, Rod faced head-on a number of challenges, such as declining enrollment, diminished state funding and the closing of a high school campus. Rod was deeply moved when New Trier dedicated a gymnasium to him in 2003.

Not one to simply rest on his laurels in retirement, Rod founded the highly regarded education search firm of Bickert & Associates, where he successfully led superintendent and principal searches for school systems across the country for many years.

Rod was an innovator in education. His singular focus was quality of education and he motivated and inspired his staff and teachers to provide the best educational experience possible. During his career, Rod served on numerous state, regional and national committees and associations dealing with financial and curricular issues. He spoke nationally on educational issues and led countless campaigns to protect local school districts from capricious funding cuts.

During his years at New Trier, Rod and Sally built their second home in Green Lake, Wisconsin, where they enjoyed watching their grandchildren grow up and spent many wonderful retirement years. Rod and Sally then moved to their home in Sheboygan overlooking Lake Michigan.

After his family, Rod’s second love was the water. He was an avid sailor, sailing competitively on Clear Lake, Iowa, and on Green Lake and enjoyed sharing his passion with his family and friends. He was also an avid sportsman and hunter, enjoying duck and pheasant hunting in Iowa and Wisconsin.

Rod was a lifelong learner. He had an insatiable curiosity about topics ranging from philosophy, politics, and comparative religions to history and human nature. He loved books and was a voracious reader. Hermann Melville was his favorite author and “Moby Dick” his favorite novel. Not coincidentally, “Moby Bick” became the familiar family name for each of his sailboats.

As a man, Rod was strong in all meanings of the word, but always kind and caring. He was a reader, a writer, a thinker, a problem-solver, a mentor, a talker, and a leader. He always took the time to listen — to everyone — and truly consider what they had to say. He was an athlete — a wrestler, a lacrosse player, a football player, and a hockey player. He was a sailor, a pilot, a hunter, and a fisherman. He was honest, ethical and fair. Rod was always a gentleman — a trait he instilled in his sons and grandsons. He loved people and they loved him.

Nothing in this world was more important to Rod than his family, and he let them know that every day. As a husband, Rod was devoted, loving and adoring. As a Dad, he was unconditionally loving, wise, strong, supportive, and understanding. He instilled in his children his belief in the importance of family. As a grandfather, Papa was a teacher, a guide, a pirate, a storyteller, a coach, the person who encouraged them to do their best, but was always understanding. Papa was the person his grandchildren would never want to disappoint. He was their biggest fan.

Rod Bickert was a most loving and loved husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Private family services were held. Memorials in Rod’s name may be made to the American Heart Association and the World Wildlife Fund, Inc.

Scott Lawrence Cahill

WAUKEE — Scott Lawrence Cahill of Waukee, Iowa, born November 12, 1966; born into eternal life May 12, 2013.

Scott died unexpectedly at Iowa Methodist West Hospital, West Des Moines, Iowa.

He was the beloved husband of Susan Cahill, devoted father of Cassi, Emily and Sarah, and a loving son and brother.

Scott was born in Mason City, Iowa, to Martin and Kathryn (Pint) CahIllinois He attended Newman Catholic High School, receiving the Al Connor Outstanding Athlete Award in 1985, and graduated with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University in 1990.

Scott married Susan Betts in 1992 and they were blessed with three beautiful daughters: Cassi, 17, Emily, 14, and Sarah, 11. He lived for his family, coaching all three girls in soccer, basketball and softball. Scott loved all sports, especially football and his beloved Vikings and Cyclones. But more than playing, Scott was a teacher and coach to his MAC softball youth team, The West Side Soul basketball team and the Maroon Athletic Club.

Scott served his church and his community as a member of the Knights of Columbus and was named the 2009 Iowa Grand Knight of the Year. He served in a number of capacities in the founding and on-going service of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, as well as Dowling Catholic High School.

Scott was assistant vice president of Corporate Real Estate at the Principal Financial Group. He managed all of the company’s facilities, including the recently announced major renovation of The Principal campus. Scott’s contributions to the community included overseeing the construction of the $70 million Principal Riverwalk over the past eight years incorporating eight major amenities, including the iconic Iowa Women of Achievement pedestrian bridge, and improving downtown flood control in the process. Scott’s children still call the Brenton Skating Plaza, “Dad’s Rink” because of the special pride he took in that project. He served on the boards of directors of the Riverfront Development Authority, Heritage Carousel, Operation Downtown and the Greenbelt Advisory Committee.

Scott was quietly effective in all his endeavors. He was a get-it-done, kind, passionate, fun and loving person. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 16, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, 1031 First Street S.E., Belmond. The Reverend Cindy Morrison will be officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be today, Wednesday, May 15, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First Street S.E., Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to the services at church Thursday.

Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in Susan’s memory may wish to direct them in care of Ron Graham, 620 Goll’s Drive, Garner, IA 50438.

Susan Jane Draper, the daughter of Virgil and Opal (Nolte) Draper, was born December 19, 1953, in Clarion, Iowa. She was the youngest of five children which included her siblings: Gary, Diane, Janice, and Marilyn.

Susan attended Belmond Community Schools and received her GED, graduating with the Class of 1971. Susan was united in marriage to Craig Boyington. The couple’s union was blessed with two children, Stephanie and Chad. They were later divorced.

Susan was united in marriage to Ron Graham, her life partner and best friend for the next 21 years on October 19, 1991, at Garner, Iowa. Their family grew to five total children, as Ron’s three sons, Denny, Matt, and Cory became siblings to Stephanie and Chad.

Throughout her entire life, Susan enjoyed her role as a mother, and later a grandma, relishing any opportunity or occasion that meant spending times with family. She looked forward to holiday gatherings and times spent with her siblings and their families. Keeping in touch with her family and their activities was a priority. Her family remembers the great times they had with Susan and Ron on getaways to Adventureland and float trips to Apple River. She also looked forward to quiet times with her husband, Ron and their outings to an area casino or a “Spur of the Moment” adventure to an unknown destination. Favorite pasttimes included working word searches, crossword, gardening, canning, cooking and the comforts of a good book. Susan had been active in bowling in earlier years in various leagues, including couple’s events with Ron. Susan’s smile and laugh would be at their best when she was able to lay on the floor with her grand kids for a precious time of playing UNO, puzzles, and board games. Susan and Ron enjoyed Sunday morning breakfast’s at Mat’s place and she also looked forward to her daily times spent with her sister, Marilyn, watching “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

In addition to being a full-time homemaker, Susan worked outside the home. She had managed the Garner VFW from 1989-1999. After some health issues, she then returned to the work force again in 2001, as she was employed with White Transfer & Storage in Forest City, Iowa, where she worked until November of 2012, when her cancer diagnoses forced her early retirement. Her years at White’s were much more than a career, as she truly looked forward to the daily camaraderie and friendships that were a part of the office full of ladies titled in fun as the “Hen House!”

Susan’s family and friends will remember her as a hard-working lady, who loved others and looked forward to the simple pleasures of life’s journey. In recent months, they saw her true strength and ferocious spirit at it’s best as she battled valiantly against the enemy and effects of cancer with dignity and perseverance.

Her legacy will be cherished in the hearts and minds of her surviving family and friends including her husband and partner, Ron Graham, Garner, Iowa; daughter, Stephanie (Nick) Reighard, Dows, Iowa, and children, Whitney and Jose Reighard, Ashlynn and Jenna McCallum; son, Chad (Darci) Boyington, Klemme, Iowa; and Ron’s sons, Denny (Beverly) Graham, Keller, Texas, and their children, Kayle and Riley; Matt (Mary) Graham, Garner, Iowa, and their children, Maddie and Mason; and Cory (Danielle) Graham, Garner, Iowa, and their children, Morgan, Jared, Trevor, and Kyle; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Aiden; Susan’s siblings, Gary Draper, Randall, Iowa, Diane (David) Lieberknecht, Belmond, Iowa, Janice Draper, Clear Lake, Iowa, and Marilyn Hanson, Klemme, Iowa; also many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, William and Irene Draper, Edwin and Daisy Nolte; uncles, Keith and Ken Nolte, Ernest Story, Gerald Draper, and Keith Voight; aunt, Valva Draper; also cousins, Linda Whipple, Kathy Draper, Nancy Draper, Timothy Draper, Keith Nolte, Jr. and Johnny Voight.
