A Celebration of Life service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City on Sunday, March 24, at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Joel will be laid to rest 11 a.m. Monday, March 25, at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be today, Saturday, March 23, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and will continue one hour prior to worship at the church on Sunday.

Memorials may be made to the Joel Laaveg Memorial to be shared with various ministries, or those of your choice.

Joel Philip Laaveg was born October 13, 1954, to Pastor Oscar and Viola (Larson) Laaveg in Joliet, Illinois From there his family moved to Camrose, Alberta, Canada, and Belmond and Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Joel went to Waldorf College where he met Gina Sundry, and they were married in 1975. Their two sons, Philip Michael and Daniel James, were the pride and joy of his life.

Joel continued his education at Buena Vista College, and spent a career in health care at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, retiring as Director of Supply Chain Management in November, 2009, due to his heart and kidney issues. A loyal employee, Joel enjoyed his work, his colleagues, and all the interesting people he met in his 28 years of employment.

Joel loved to sing. He sang in the high school choir in Emmetsburg, Waldorf College Choir in Forest City, and the North Iowa Chorale in Mason City. He had the lead role as Curly in “OKLAHOMA!” in high school and also with the Mason City Community Theatre. He sang “Rise Again” at the end of darkened Good Friday Tenebrae Services for many years.

Joel traveled and sang with many musical friends through the years. He was part of Brethren, a Gospel quartet which began at Waldorf College in 1974 and reunited in 1991 and began singing throughout the Midwest and Southwest for twenty years. They made several recordings and countless friendships along the way.

Through all the years of his life, deep friendships were also made through church choirs and group Bible studies. His personal relationship with Jesus Christ was deep and loving.

Raising his boys with games of catch, watching and tossing the football, shooting baskets, and golf made him so happy. Waterskiing, canoeing, and enjoying his family and wildlife at the Laaveg family cabin on Big Wolf Lake, Minnesota, fishing, lake trips with friends, travelling, tables full of family and friends for dinner, and long evenings of meaningful conversation and laughter were experiences he treasured. His brothers were especially loved by Joel, and their support during his illness was unbeatable. He also had a “band of brothers” and friends that lifted his spirits daily. Following an empty nest, Gina and Joel enjoyed several years living in the woods near Pilot Knob State Park, returning to Clear Lake as Joel’s health deteriorated.

Joel is survived by his wife, Gina, Clear Lake, Iowa; son Philip and his wife, Nadia, Los Angeles, California; son, Dan, Cedar Falls, Iowa; brothers Dr. Sterling (Rita), Scottsdale, Arizona; Paul (Nancy), Berryville, Virginia; Rev. Lee (Denise), Milford, Iowa; the Sundry family he married into, and a host of nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and great nephew, Miles Hanson.

Joel’s family would like to thank Dr. Don Berge, family physician, of Clear Lake, and especially Dr. Sam Congello, cardiologist, of Mason City, for his commitment and tireless professional care. “I’m not giving up on you, Laaveg!” We are grateful for all the doctors, nurses, and health care workers who took care of Joel through the years with special thanks to the caregivers at Mercy’s Dialysis Center the last 2½ years.

Kermit Richard Rusley was born on April 13, 1919, in Grenora, Williams County, North Dakota, to parents Tom J. and Tilda (Kvaslerud) Rusley. He was baptized in North Dakota prior to his family moving to Iowa in 1920. Kermit was confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church in 1933, and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1937.

On June 28, 1950, Kermit was united in marriage with Thelma Perry at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, Iowa. The couple had two children, and they made their home on the present farm all their lives. Kermit farmed the family farm, never really retiring, until his death.

Kermit and Thelma enjoyed many bus trips in their retirement years, seeing most of the United States, traveled to Norway and Denmark, and spent many winters in the McAllen, Texas, area.

Kermit’s free time was filled with golfing and playing cards at Rice Lake, fishing and woodworking. No one appreciated polka music more than Kermit, and he and Thelma had a love for dancing throughout their marriage. Another of Kermit’s passions was restoring tractors, and he was never known to pass up a cup of coffee and conversation with family and friends.

Kermit was a member of the board of directors for a number of area organizations including the Leland Co-op Elevator, Cooperative Services, and the Winnebago Mutual Insurance Association, as well as being active at Winnebago Lutheran Church. He held many offices over the years, being president of the congregation twice.

Most importantly, Kermit was a kind, gentle, fun-loving, and hard-working man who loved God, his family and friends, and the land he was blessed to work for so many years.

Survivors include his two children: David (Rita) Rusley of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Diane (Daniel Hall) Pauk of Cross Plains, Wisconsin; four grandchildren: Michelle (Brett) Kroncke of Nashville, Tennessee, Danielle Pauk of Chicago, Illinois, Stephanie Pauk of Chicago, Illinois, and Rachael Rusley of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and three great grandchildren: Jack Rusley, Lydia Rusley and Ingrid Kroncke. Kermit is also survived by his brother, Stanley Rusley of Leland, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Lila Perry of Scottsdale, Arizona; his long-time friend, Helene Iverson of Lake Mills, Iowa; and many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Kermit was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Thelma; and six siblings: Agnes Flugum, Senora Rusley, Helen Chase, Joseph Rusley, Thelma Bannon and Lydia Wolfe.
