Patricia Aileen (Jaacks) Benson

Kansas City, Missouri — Patricia Aileen (Jaacks) Benson, age 82, formerly of Sioux City and Alexander, Iowa, passed from this life on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at the Garden Valley Care Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 4, preceded by a visitation beginning at 11:30, both at the Alexander United Methodist Church in Alexander, Iowa. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery in Kanawha.

Patricia was born in Sioux City on Aug. 1, 1930, the eldest of the three children of Alfred and Bertha (Stevenson) Jaacks. As a child, her family lived in Kingsley and Hinton before moving to Alexander, where she graduated from high school in 1948.

She then moved to Clarion and began working at the local movie theatre. While working there, she met Milford “Benny” Benson, who quickly became the love of her life. They were united in marriage on Dec. 19, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in Alexander — the first couple to wed in that then-new building. Their union was subsequently blessed with 10 children: Melinda, Joel, Dale, Jacqueline, Michael, Larry, Julie, Lee, James and Traci.

She and Milford met countless friends while living in various Iowa communities, including Kanawha, Alexander, Goldfield, Jewel, Hampton, Kingsley, Le Mars, Merrill, South Sioux City and Sioux City, before she finally moved to the Woodbine and then the Garden Valley care facilities in Kansas City.

Patricia spent a number of years working, first as a waitress, and then in retail clothing sales at JC Penney and Spurgeon’s in LeMars and at Morey’s and Raymond’s, Kahn’s, and finally Jean’s in downtown Sioux City.

Patricia loved and cared for her family first and foremost. Her many pastimes and hobbies included sewing and embroidery, bingo and card games, and her ever-present crossword puzzles. She was an enthusiastic baker whose children especially miss her banana bread and applesauce raisin bars.

She and Milford enjoyed dancing and socializing, especially through their membership in the Abu Bekr Shrine camper unit.

Her life and legacy will be remembered in the hearts and minds of her surviving children and their spouses, including daughters Melinda (John) Dodds of Sioux City, Iowa, Julie Benson-Grant (and Dan Grant) of North Kansas, Missouri, and Traci Stabile of Gladstone, Missouri; sons Joel (Susan) Benson of Urbandale, Iowa, Michael (Terry) Benson of Murphy, North Carolina, Larry Benson of Springfield, Missouri, Lee Benson of Sioux City, Iowa, and James Benson of North Sioux City, South Dakota; her sister Geraldine and brother-in-law Phillip “Sonny” Haaf of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 33 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; and innumerable nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milford, in February 2009; her parents, Alfred and Bertha Jaacks; son Dale Hilding Benson and daughter Jacqueline Susanne Benson; brother Marvin Jaacks; daughter-in-law Tracy Morris Benson; granddaughter Amanda Benson; grandson John Dodds Jr.; and great-granddaughter Jennifer Hesse.

The family suggests that those wishing to make memorial contributions might consider the Alzheimer’s Association or Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

LaVera was born April 9, 1913, on a farm southwest of Sheffield, just four miles from the farm she has lived at for the past 78 years. LaVera was the oldest child of Charles and Addie (Engebretson ) Walker. She was educated at Richland Center School, Richland Township and attended Sheffield High School. She also assisted her father with all the farming and chores.

In 1926 she started working as a hired girl for many families in the area.

LaVera was baptized and confirmed on March 25, 1934, by the Rev. C.J. Barth at the Evangelical Church, Marion Center, which is now the Immanuel United Church of Christ Church in Latimer.

On Dec. 12, 1935, she was united in marriage with Edd W. Bruns at the Congregational Church in Marion Center by the Rev. C.J. Barth. After they were married they moved north of Latimer to the farm where they spent their entire married life. To this union two daughters were born, Joyce and JoAnn.

LaVera was one of the first deaconesses of the church where she and her husband also served as youth counselors. She served on the decorating committee when the church and parsonage were being built. Her hobbies were crocheting, quilting, serving, genealogy, TOPS, reading, scrapbooking, canning, baking and gardening. With Edd she also enjoyed many camping trips, where they were members of the camping club B-CALM Weekenders.

At the age of 91 she still canned pickles and tomatoes, and at 96 was still making cherry pies for her great grandchildren to take to the 4-H food stand at the Franklin County Fair. LaVera loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren — “they are my pride and joy” — and they all have very fond memories of her. Her favorite thing was to spend time with her family, which included playing cards on Sundays for nickels and having a potluck with her siblings.

He attended and graduated from St. Ansgar High School amongst the Class of 1976. While in high school and throughout his life RT loved St. Ansgar Saints football and was a lifelong fan.

RT spent much of his time farming, not only for himself, but for the Cole family as well.

In his free time RT loved going to friends’ homes, playing slow pitch softball and umpiring softball games. During the winter months he could be found riding his Arctic Cat snowmobile whenever the weather permitted. He was an avid NASCAR fan, cheering on his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon. RT had a knack for fixing anything in anyone’s shop. In fact, he was taken too soon, doing just that.

Family and friends will remember RT for his easy-going personality; he was slow to anger and always ready and willing to help a friend, never expecting anything in return. He never met a stranger and was well recognized when he would do his “train whistle.”

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his children, Ryan Navratil (Vonda), Megan Navratil (Josh), Hilary Navratil and Cody Navratil; grandchildren, Harper Hyde, Bradyn Enabnit and Cameron Navratil; siblings, Jerry Navratil, Randy (Mary) Navratil and Joleen (Erik) Bakken; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members and many friends.
