Marble Rock — Funeral services for Geraldine Bruggeman, 86, formerly of Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marble Rock, with Pastor Bob Scheurer officiating. Burial will be in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 11, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene, and will continue at the church one hour before services on Saturday.

Geraldine Reints was born in Clarksville, Butler County, on Sept. 15, 1926, the daughter of William John and Etjedina (Reints) Reints and died on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Gerry received her education in country school and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1943. She received her teaching certificate from at Wartburg College in Waverly and obtained her BA teaching degree from UNI. Once a teacher she taught school in Plainfield for one year in a one-room school house. Gerry’s life was dedicated to educating young people. She taught school at RRMR for 45 years before retiring in 1991.

Gerry was united in marriage to Melbourne Lowell. Bruggeman on Aug. 4, 1949, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarksville. This union was blessed with two children, Deb and Doug. The family moved to Greene where they farmed until settling in Marble Rock where they made their home.

She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she served with the WELCA and was on the church council. Gerry was interested in gardening, was a member of the Marble Rock Historical Society, served on the Marble Rock Library Board, and was a tutor. She was a very social person who especially enjoyed the after church coffees at her home.

Living family members include her children: Deb (Terry) Hammer of Cedar Rapids, Doug (Cindy) Bruggeman, Rochester, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Brennan Hammer, Sarah Bruggeman, Tara (Justin) Schlake, Jared Bruggeman Jordan Bruggeman; four great-grandchildren: Corrin, Caydance, Ashton, Charli; nieces, Beverly Slinger and Judy Wood; Nephews, William and Tom Reints; and many great nieces and nephews.

Gerry was preceded in death by her husband, Melbourne in 1978, her parents, two sisters, Elsa Swan and Catherine Wood; one brother, Sievert Reints.

John “Jack” Richard King
U.S. Army   Korean Conflict

MASON CITY — John “Jack” Richard King, 82, of Mason City died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.

Graveside Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, 1224 South Washington Ave., with Pastor Ed Bard of Hospice of North Iowa officiating. There will be no visitation, upon Jack’s wishes he was cremated.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the John “Jack” King memorial fund in care of the family. Lunch and fellowship will follow at the VFW, 1603 South Monroe Ave., Mason City.

John was born on Nov. 7, 1930, to Howard and Annabelle King in Waterloo. After graduating from East High School in 1948, John worked at the Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo. He went on to enlist in the U.S. Army and served his country as a medic in the Korean War in 1951. After his honorable discharge from the military, John attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and was awarded his bachelor’s degree in Education in 1959. He then went onto earn his master’s degree in education. He initially taught social studies for five years in Parkersburg. His career then brought him and his family to Mason City. He taught social studies at the Mason City High School for the rest of his career. He retired in 1989, but continued to teach night classes at Buena Vista University.

John married Ruth Slater on April 2, 1951. They would have four children together with their first child, Robert, dying in infancy. Two daughters, Billie and Laurie, and another son, Steve, would follow and would complete their family. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a nature lover and enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing, camping and simple walks in the woods. His enjoyment of the sun and the outdoors was instilled in his children from an early age. He also enjoyed working in the yard. Planting trees and other activities would keep him outdoors. Later in life, John and Ruth were snowbirds, spending their winters in Texas. John also was an avid gun enthusiast enjoying visits to the local gun range to do some target shooting and cowboy competition action shooting. When indoors, John also had many hobbies. He would make scale models of World War II airplanes based on blueprints of the real planes and then would build them to scale using wood framing. He paid great attention to details on his models with all parts movable and functional. John also enjoyed classical music, playing cards, apple pie and dark chocolate. He was also an avid reader and traded books with his children and grandchildren. He also looked forward to his weekly breakfast club with his teacher colleagues.

John is survived by his wife, Ruth; Daughter, Billie Cory and grandsons Damon (Heidi) Cory and Ben (Lisa) Cory; Daughter, Laurie (Jay Thomas and grandsons Garrett (Sarah) Havnen and Marcus (Keara) Thomas (Great grandson, Teaghan); Son Steven King; sister Leann (Dan) Hughes and son-in-law Dick (Kim) Cory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and an infant son.

“The whole life of the swimmer is one of courage and adventure. All of it builds to the climax and the end. When the swimmer dies, he has spent himself completely for the end for which he was made, and this is not sadness. It is triumph.”

LuAnn M. Hadacek

Mason City — LuAnn M. Hadacek, 75, of Mason City and formerly of Rockwell, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Rodney M. Allers as Celebrant. Committal services will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell.

Visitation will take place on Sunday evening, Jan. 13, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, from 3 to 5 p.m. with a Scriptural Wake service at 3 p.m.

Mildred “Millie” Smith

GARNER — Mildred “Millie” Smith, 92, of Garner died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with Pastor Paul Evans officiating. Inurnment will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Memorials may be directed to the Garner United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Mildred Elzora Smith, the daughter of T. Earl and Lois (Jones) Thornton, was born Aug. 23, 1920, in Des Moines. She graduated from Des Moines North High School in 1938. On April 26, 1941, she was married to Ronald E. Smith at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines. They lived in Adair, Dexter and then moved to Garner in 1946. In 1950, they purchased the Viken Hardware Store located where NIPCO is today. They continued to operate the store as the Smith Hardware, Heating and Plumbing Store and later moved to their present location on the west side of State Street. After Ron passed away in 1981, Millie continued to operate the store with her son, Lynn until retiring at the age of 87. She enjoyed golfing, traveling and playing bridge.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW and was a past member of the Garner Chamber of Commerce.

Millie is survived by her children, Cheryll (Duane) Toppin of Ankeny and Lynn Smith (Kathy Aberg-Smith) of Garner; grandchildren, Heather Toppin, Robin Toppin, Ronald (Sara) Smith, Taylor Smith, James (Miranda) Aberg, Bethany Aberg and Emberly Aberg; and great-grandchildren, Laura Toppin and Noah Aberg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald E. Smith; son, Alan W. Smith; her parents, T. Earl Thornton and Lois Creekmore; step-father, Monte Creekmore; twin granddaughters, Sarah Jo and Mary Kay Toppin; and a sister, Violette McKirgan.

Mason City — Mary P. Lamb, 92, of Mason City died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Roger P. Holcomb

MASON CITY — Roger P. Holcomb, 79, of Mason City, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Dan Gerrietts officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Association.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continue at the church one hour before services.

Richard H. Beenken
U.S.  Army   WWII

ALGONA —Richard H. Beenken, 88, of Algona, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Heritage Nursing Home in Bancroft.

A funeral service will be held today, Friday, Jan. 11, at 10 a.m. at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka, with the Rev. Perry DeGroot officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Richard Helmer Beenken was born Aug. 21, 1924, on the family farm near Titonka, son of Dick and Etta (Harringa) Beenken. He graduated from Titonka High School in 1942. Richard served in the United States Army during WWII doing his basic training at Camp Livingston, La. He shipped out to Yokohoma, Japan, and was on the first ship to enter Tokyo Bay after WWII ended.

Richard was united in marriage to Thelma A. Penning on Dec. 1, 1950, and they celebrated 50 years of marriage together. He farmed near Titonka and while farming was a “Jack of All Trades,” also shelling corn, plumbing, doing electrical work, welding and photography. He was also a 4-H leader for many years. He took much pride in building his own camper and pontoon boat and spent many summers with his family enjoying them. Richard and Thelma retired from farming and moved into Algona in 1995. Thelma preceded him in death on Aug. 15, 2001. Richard later married Shirle Sorenson on Aug. 24, 2002. They made their home near Algona.

Richard was an active member of the Ramsey Reformed Church and served in many capacities. After moving to Algona, he enjoyed attending services at the First Presbyterian Church. Richard had a great sense of humor. He loved traveling and spending winters in Arizona. He was grateful for all his children and grandchildren and loved playing games with them.

He is survived by his wife Shirle Beenken of Algona; 5 children and eight grand-children, Beverly (Mark) Klein and their children Kelly and David of Algona, Donovan (Karla) Beenken and their son Trevor of Titonka, Randy (Becky) Beenken of Titonka, Rodney (Shari) Beenken and their children, Madison, Katelyn and Jack of Titonka, and Roxann (Darin) Roggenburg and their children Rachel and Ethan of Clive. He is also survived by Shirle’s children and their families, Marcia (Jim) Cook of Solon, and Mark (Briana) Sorensen of Houston, Texas, two sisters-in-law, Amelia Graves of Britt, and Magdaline Penning of Algona; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Thelma; one brother, Erwin Beenken; and a sister, Evelyn Devries.

Deloris “Dee” Larson

FOREST CITY — Deloris “Dee” Larson, 80, of Forest City died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City surrounded by her immediate family.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller with Rose Visser, lay pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Ellington Prairie Cemetery near Miller.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Deloris “Dee” Faye (Andreasen) Larson was born on Oct. 6, 1932, in Audubon. She graduated from Audubon High School and then attended secretarial school in Omaha before moving to Mason City where she met and married Dick Larson. Dick and Dee had 5 children in 7 years and farmed north of Ventura. Later they managed the Forest City Country Club and then purchased the Bungalow Motor Lodge. Dee then moved to Mason City where she graduated from NIACC and worked at Walmart for over 10 years before retiring. Dee was known as a wonderful cook and many benefited from her talents. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and always offered a listening ear to anyone in need. She will be missed by her family and friends and remembered for her engaging smile and twinkle in her eye.

She was a member of Ellington Prairie-Faith Lutheran Church in Miller and was active in a variety of clubs and organizations.

She is survived by her children, Pat Goerner and her husband, John, of Liberty Hill, Texas, Betty Jo Larson and her husband, Tim Gustafson, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and their children Jenna and Ingrid, Sally Larson of Forest City and her son, Spenser, Chuck Larson of Clear Lake and Bob Larson and his wife, Renee, of Naperville, Illinois, and their children, Dani, Brooke and Abby; and two brothers, Lyndyn Andreasen and his wife, Lynn, of Prosser, Washington and Gerald Andreasen and his wife, Velma, of West Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Hildur (Carlson) Andreasen; her sister, Delia Sturgeon; and brother, Gene Andreasen.

Lawrence Charles Pitkin

TULSA, Oklahoma. — Lawrence Charles Pitkin, a resident of Owasso, Oklahoma, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 in Tulsa. He was born Sept. 3, 1926, in Garner, Iowa.

Before moving to Owasso in 2003, Lawrence was a farmer in Winnebago County for over 60 years, where he was very active in the Baptist Church. Lawrence has been married to his loving wife Lorraine for 62 years and is survived by Lorraine, their three children and five grandchildren: daughter Jackie Allison and her husband Gary of Fort Myers, Florida; son Jerald Pitkin, his wife Heather and their children Paige and Drake of Naples, Florida; Jerald’s son Tyler of Oakland, California; and son Jeffrey Pitkin, his wife Thriscilla and their children Natalie and Luke of Owasso, Oklahoma. Lawrence is also survived by one sister, Darlene Kadolph of California.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Emma Pitkin, two brothers Bob and Dale Pitkin, and three sisters, Marilyn Pitkin, Doris Thompson and Lucille Wyma.

Since moving to Owasso, Lawrence has been a member of First Baptist Owasso. Lawrence always gave people the benefit of the doubt, had a heart for giving, and inspired people to be their best. His ever-present optimism was a reflection of his faith that God has everything under control. Lawrence will be missed by his many friends and family.

Memorial services for Lawrence were held on Friday, Jan. 11, at 3 p.m. at Mowery Funeral Service, 9110 North Garnett Road, Owasso, OK 74055, with Chaplain Steve Williams of the Owasso Baptist Village officiating. Interment will be private.

Mason City — Joseph J. Ezarski, 96, of Mason City, formerly of the Algona and Corwith areas, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt with Father Dennis W. Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Kanawha — Louise E. Smith, 97, of Kanawha, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services for Louise Smith will be held on Monday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Kanawha United Methodist Church, 402 N. Main St. in Kanawha with Pastor Tim Rieckhoff-Faris officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Dixie Elder Banks

Urbandale — Dixie Elder Banks, 77, passed away Jan. 9, 2013, in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines. Burial is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday at Wallace Cemetery in Wick, Iowa.

Dixie was born in Mason City, Iowa, on October 18, 1935. She attended both Iowa State University and the University of Iowa, which prepared her for a successful career at Capp Homes and Farm Bureau. She retired from Farm Bureau after 19 years of service. Dixie was extremely devoted to her daughters, family, 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Jacquelyn Elder; husbands, Don Nindos and George Banks.

She is survived by her four daughters and their families, Carrie and Brian Barie of Woodstock, Georgia, Christy and Richard Spooner of West Des Moines, Katie and Jim Lacona of Urbandale, and Stacy and Derek Halter of Leopold, Missouri; and her sister, Mary and Robert Wilson of Mason City.

Roger P. Holcomb

MASON CITY — Roger P. Holcomb, 79, of Mason City, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Roger was born October 8, 1933, in rural Swea City, Iowa, the son of Philip and Emma (Lofstrom) Holcomb. He graduated from Swea City High School in 1951. He would go on to attend Iowa State University and graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree and later his Master of Science degree.

Roger married Donna Lemke on Nov. 26, 1955, at East Chain Lutheran Church in East Chain, Minn. They moved to the Los Angeles, California, area returning to Mason City in 1960. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1957. Roger taught school at Plymouth High School, now Central Springs, and later at Mason City High School.

Roger retired in 1996 as the Director of Community Education at North Iowa Area Community College. He worked at NIACC for 30 years. Roger was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he ushered for many years, and the Mason City Rotary Club. He served on a number of boards including the American Cancer Society, Iowa Association of Lifelong Learning, Iowa Vocational Association, and the Deans and Directors of Iowa Community Colleges.

Roger is survived by his wife, Donna of Mason City; daughters, Anita (Steve) Stilwell of Hudson, Wisc., and Nancy (Steve) Lind of Cedar Falls, Iowa; grandchildren, Stephanie Stilwell of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Zachary Stilwell of Hudson, Wisconsin, Tyler Lind of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Brittany Lind of Cedar Fall, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Emma Lofstrom Holcomb; step-mother, Emma Nelson Holcomb; brothers and sisters, Martha Wallentine, Myrtle Larsen, Martin Holcomb, Miriam Holcomb, Merle Holcomb, Reuben Holcomb, and Gordon Holcomb.

James Helling

Story City — James Helling, age 88, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at his home in Story City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held today, Saturday, Jan. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. Jim will be buried at Radcliffe Cemetery.

James Richard Helling was born on June 5, 1924, in Kensett, Iowa. He was born the son of Ole and Leona (Tabbert) Helling.

He received his education by attending grade school in Kensett, high school in Rock Falls, and graduated from Hamilton Business College.

Jim proudly served his country in the Merchant Marines during the years 1943 to 1946 and in the U.S. Army, 1949 to 1950. He participated in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2010.

On May 22, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marlene Joyce Houck in the St. John’s United Methodist Church, Radcliffe, Iowa. They resided in Mason City for 54 years prior to moving to Story City in 2008.

Jim was employed by Alliant Energy (Interstate Power) for over 39 years and retired in 1989.

His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends. He was a world-wide traveler, loved camping, card club, shopping, garage sales, golf, watching all sports and cheering for his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings.

He was a former member of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City and currently was a member of St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. In past years, Jim had been active in the Mason City Masonic Lodge, Moose Lodge and Wigwam-n-Wagon camp club.

Jim passed away peacefully at his home in Story City on Wednesday, January 9, 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene “Mar” Helling of Story City; daughter Rosalind (Steven) Gordon of Austin, Texas; son Scott (Gloria) Helling of Ames, Iowa; grandchildren Shawn (Heather) Hedrick, Erinn (Chad) Smith, Erik (Kristin) Helling, Kelsey (Robert) Andrade; Ashlee (Tyler) Braland; great-grandchildren Rhett and Grayson Hedrick, Madelyn and Reed Smith; brother Roger (Fran) May and sister Janet (Larry) Klink.

She was born on June 3, 1920, in Farindola, Italy, to Domenic and Spinalba Nardicchio. At the age of nine months, despite contracting rheumatic fever along the way, she survived the long rough boat ride to the U.S.A. with her mother and older brother, Joe. Her father arrived some time before to find work and set up a new life for the Nardicchios as full citizens of this great country.

They settled in Mason City, on the famed Lehigh Row, and Mary attended Mason City schools. Her first known job was as a waitress at the “Over The Top Café” where she would meet her future husband, Gail Lamb. Gail worked at Bayes Bakery across the street.

Mary and Gail were united in marriage in August of 1940 and this union would last 63 years. Mary and Gail had one son, Danny.

Soon after her waitress job and Gail’s bakery career, Mary and Gail both went to work for Mason City Community Schools in the custodial department. They continued there until retirement.

Mary enjoyed sewing, all kinds of crafts, traveling, music and dancing, playing cards, family dinners, her church, and a lifetime of good fellowship with many friends and family members.

Mary had a big heart. Her generosity and kindness was proof of that to all. She will be greatly missed.

Mary Lamb was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Domenic; mother, Spinalba; brother, Joseph; son, Danny; and husband, Gail.

She is survived by sisters, Josephine Ellefson (Clear Lake), Lena Peyton (Belmond), Florence Dewey (Clear Lake), and many nieces and nephews including great, great-great, and great-great-great.

Barbara Jean Wilson Mannetter was born August 7, 1930, in White River, South Dakota, the daughter of David Clarence and Barbara (McNair) Wilson. She graduated from Floyd High School in 1948. On August 8, 1950, she was united in marriage to Agon “Dutch” Mannetter at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Barbara was a devoted farm wife and mother. She was a member of the Colwell Culture Club, and the Colwell United Church of Christ.

Living family members include three children, Nancy (Bill) Ritzman of Charles City, Becky (Rick Larsen) Mannetter of Cedar Rapids, and Judy (Tracy Kuramoto) Mannetter, of Chicago; five grandchildren, Terry (Heather) Ritzman, Amy (Ben) Johnson, and Nathan (Allyson), Ben and Lauren Larsen; and great-grandchildern Nicholas, Bailey, Grady, Jackson, and Riley; and one sister Thelma Iverson of Pierre, South Dakota.

Osage — Fern (Streich) Barenz, age 89, of Osage, passed on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Bryan Lagerstam and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating.

Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the memorial service at the church.

Fern was born July 27, 1923, in Grafton, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Edna (Rosenberg) Streich. The family moved to St. Ansgar when Fern was 5 years old and to Osage when she was in 10th grade.

Fern started teaching in Cedar Township in 1942. After teaching there for four years, the school closed. She then taught in Rock Township for two years, and in later years did substitute teaching.

In October 1943, she married Clinton Barenz. Four children were born to this union: Dennis, Thomas, James and Jan.

Fern and Clinton had a food stand at the Mitchell County Fair for 30 years. They also had the Star Light Roller Rink for 14 years, and ran the popcorn stand on a corner of Main Street for many years.

Fern had been a resident at the Faith Lutheran Home for the past several years. Fern and Clinton enjoyed the trips that they took to Japan and Europe. She also enjoyed her involvement with various card clubs.

Fern is survived by her children, James Barenz (Michiyo) of Osage, and Jan Barenz (Patty Morris) of North Las Vegas, Nevada; three grandchildren: Jennifer, Nicole and Brenton Barenz; and one great-granddaughter, Alana.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Streich; her mother, Edna (Rosenberg) Streich Runge; her husband, Clinton, in 1994; her sons, Dennis in 2012 and Thomas in 1992; and a sister, Rose Thorson.

Richard Victor Disque, son of August and Velma (Moore) Disque, was born May 17, 1935, at Lamberton, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Springfield, Minnesota, and attended school in Springfield. He completed two years of college through the Navy.

Richard married Mineko, who was from Japan, and they had one son, Joey. They were later divorced. He married a long-time friend, Jackie, who later passed away. He married Phyllis Suby of Forest City in 1994.

He served 30 years in the Navy, from 1956 to 1984, and has been all over the world. He also spent 12 years at an electric company, after retiring from the Navy.

Richard had many hobbies and interests. He loved to garden and create flower beds. He loved reading and politics. He was an active member of West Prairie Lutheran Church, serving on the council, and he was a member of the VFW in Leland.

He was a strong believer in work and had a huge heart. He could find good in everyone and avoided arguments, especially in the dog business as part owner of Shiloh Kennels. He was always making changes and improvements and he loved the puppies.

Richard was a very caring and loving husband to Phyllis. He loved his son, Joey, and his grandchildren.

He was a man to be proud of.

Joseph J. Ezarski was born Dec. 5, 1916, in Ogden, Iowa, one of eight children born to Alexander and Petronia (Jansuskas) Ezarski. He attended school in Lake Mills and Britt.

Joe started farming with his father at Lake Mills, and then moved to Britt where he met and married Annabelle M. Frisbie on Jan. 25, 1940. They had four daughters and the family moved to Corwith in 1946, where they continued farming for 40 years. They enjoyed raising and showing registered Shetland ponies and horses.

He retired from farming after 40 years in 1985 and in 1994 moved to their retirement home in Algona. Joe enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing and woodworking. He also enjoyed traveling to Texas for the winter, playing shuffleboard and Round Dancing.

Joseph Ezarski, 96, of Mason City and formally of Algona and Corwith, passed away on Thursday Jan. 10, 2013, at The I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City, where he had resided since 2009.

THORNTON — Dale J. Fischer was born Nov. 7, 1926, at Meservey, Iowa, to Simon Peter Fischer and Reaka Janssen Fischer, and died suddenly Jan. 10, 2013, at his farm home.

Dale began his schooling in Meservey, Iowa. During his last two years of high school he worked for area farmers. He graduated from Meservey High School the spring of 1944. That fall, he joined the Army and served in various locations including Benshiem, Germany, for 10 months following WW II, where he was a mechanic. He was honorably discharged in November 1946.

Dale married Phyllis M. Wendel on Oct. 22, 1947. To this union three sons were born: Don, Randy and Mark. Dale and Phyllis celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2007.

Dale and Phyllis began farming the family farm north of Meservey after their marriage and his farming career spanned 65 years. They raised row crops, various livestock, and were particularly recognized for their Polled Hereford cattle. The operation later became Fischer Land and Cattle Co.

Dale was active in his community all his life. He began his Christian journey as a member of the Salem Evangelical Church in Meservey. He held many offices in his church, served on the Administrative Board as well as represented the church at Annual Conference. In 2011, he transferred to the Meservey Reformed Church.

Dale was a 65-year member of the William Schmale Post 171 American Legion and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. In 2009, he flew to Washington, D.C., on the Honor Flight for WW II veterans. A highlight of this flight was having a hometown pilot, Billy Greer.

Dale served as director for the Farmers’ Gas and Oil Co. in Mason City and was township trustee a number of years. He was also employed as a grain inspector for two townships. He was a member of the School Board for the newly formed Meservey-Thornton School District for more than six years and was a director for the Klemme Co-op for nine years, serving as secretary the last two years.

Dale was a director of the Iowa Polled Hereford Association, a charter member and past president of the Cerro Gordo County Cattleman’s Association, a charter member of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association, and a charter member of the National Cattleman’s Beef Association. In 1992, he was named the Iowa Commercial Cattleman of the Year. He was also a member of the American Soybean Association, Iowa Soybean Association, National Corn Growers’ Association and Iowa Corn Growers’ Association.

Dale was a strong supporter of the North Iowa Fair and the Iowa State Fair and longtime 4-H leader. Dale and Phyllis enjoyed watching many cattle shows and sports events throughout the Midwest to see their sons and grandsons show cattle, play basketball and run track, as well as various other school and church activities.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, in 2007; his parents; and his sister Gladys Wessels.

Mason City — LuAnn M. Hadacek, 75, of Mason City, and formerly of Rockwell, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. with the Rev. Rodney M. Allers as celebrant. Committal services will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell.

Visitation will take place on Sunday evening, Jan. 13, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, from 3 until 5 p.m. with a Scriptural Wake service at 3 p.m.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in LuAnn’s name in care of her family.

LuAnn Meriam Waage was born on December 15, 1937, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Nico and Mariam (Zieman) Waage. She attended and graduated from Belmond High School before furthering her education at Hamilton’s Business School.

On August 29, 1964, LuAnn was united in marriage to Francis Hadacek at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell; this union would be blessed with eight children.

For a brief time before her marriage, LuAnn worked at the Ford Garage and the Belmond Bakery, both in Belmond, before opting to stay at home and raise her family. In later years she worked at the Rockwell Nursing Home. In her free time she loved flower gardening, solving crossword puzzles, playing cards, especially Solitaire, and enjoying the company of her friends and family.

In more recent years LuAnn moved to Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, where she made many new friendships. She loved participating in nearly every activity offered and particularly loved BINGO! Her family even joked with her that she was on the “Good Shepherd Council!”

Those grateful in sharing in her life are her husband, Francis Hadacek, Mason City; children, Patrick (Ardith) Hadacek, Sumner, Mark Hadacek (Sharla Hansen), Mason City, Bradley Hadacek, Mason City, Ronald (Teresa) Hadacek, Mason City, and Rebecca Hadacek (Matt Roath), Mason City; 22 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her sister, Marlene (Don) Suntken, Belmond; sisters-in-law, Viv Waage and Norma Jean Thompson; as well as extended family members and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; three children, Brenda Hadacek, Vicki Hadacek, and Sandra Hadacek; and three brothers, LewWaage, Eugene Waage, and Myron (Fritz) Waage.

Ross Homer Honsey

Emmons, Minnesota — Ross Homer Honsey, age 60, of Emmons, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at his home in rural Emmons, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer.

A celebration of Ross’ life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, Minn., with the Rev. Dr. Cathi Braasch, STS, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, rural Emmons.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Emmons Lutheran Church, 490 Pearl St., from 4 to 8 p.m., and will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Ross Homer Honsey was born on July 3, 1952, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Homer and Berdine (Opdahl) Honsey. He was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea and confirmed at Emmons Lutheran Church, where he has since remained a lifelong member.

Ross graduated from Emmons High School with the class of 1970. He attended college in Winona and Mankato.

On April 16, 1977, Ross was united in marriage to Diane Holstad at Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, Iowa.

Ross was raised on the family farm where he began his lifelong interest in agriculture. He worked for several local elevators, along with Farmstead Foods, where he was employed for nearly 10 years. He then purchased his own farm site where he raised hogs and crops for more than 25 years. In addition to his own love for agriculture, he instilled that love into children by being a 4-H leader for many years.

Ross was known for being a strong, hard-working, loyal friend and neighbor who lived life to the fullest. He had a passion for playing golf, where he rarely missed a “Holy Thursday” outing at Rice Lake Country Club. His love of the outdoors was also evident in his time spent hunting, fishing and riding ATVs.

Ross also enjoyed playing cards, where his fiercely competitive nature never interfered with his endless wisecracks and playful antics. He could be found every morning at “the station” in Emmons flipping quarters for pop and getting his “daily education.” He left an impression on everyone he met by always exuding optimism, inspiration and humor, even in the toughest of times.

Above all, Ross was a devoted family man who was always loving and doting on his wife, children and grandchildren.

Ross is survived by his wife, Diane (Holstad) Honsey of Emmons; children, Sandy (Lane) Vanek of Twin Lakes, Minnesota, and Brad Honsey of Bloomington, Minnesota; two grandchildren: Kenna and Taylor Vanek; his mother, Berdine Honsey of Emmons; six brothers: Curtis (Betty) Honsey, Neal (Gayle) Honsey, Howard (Connie) Honsey, Loren (Rachel Iverson) Honsey, Richard (Bobbi) Honsey and Dennis (Heidi) Honsey; a sister, Judy (Tom) Cleveland; and his sister-in-law, Joey Honsey. Ross is also survived by the Holstad family: father- and mother-in-law, Dean and Senora Holstad; brothers-in-law, Mike (Ellen) Holstad, Randy (Dorene) Holstad, and Danny (Jen) Holstad; sisters-in-law, Connie (Ron) Arispe and Lori (Terry) Peterson; and many special nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Dale was born the son of Joe and Lena (DeBerg) Stumberg on June 9, 1924, in Grundy County, Iowa. He graduated from Dike High School in 1942 and resided in the area most of his life. On Oct. 23, 1948, Dale was united in marriage with Elaine B. Dewner in Lewiston, Minn.

Dale farmed for more than 51 years before retiring in 2004. He then moved to Ridgeway Place in Waterloo and for the past year resided in Osage near his daughter, Pam, at Faith Lutheran Home. Dale was a member of Dike United Methodist Church. Singing, visiting and spending time with family and friends, and watching Iowa Hawkeye sports brought him great joy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, in 1995; his parents; one infant daughter, Karen in 1962; infant grandson, Nyles, in 1990; and three sisters, Margaret, LaVerne and Lois.

Anna was born Oct. 9, 1927, in Kanawha, Iowa, to Ubbe and Annie (Betten) Smidt. Anna graduated from Kanawha High School in 1946.

She was married to Robert Stock on Aug. 19, 1953, at the Christian Reformed Church in Kanawha, Iowa.

Anna was an active member of the Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield, Iowa. She enjoyed cards, board games, puzzles, gardening, mowing the lawn, tending to her flowers and her cats. Anna baked a cake from scratch every day and made sure everyone always had something to eat.

Robert and Anna met at the Surf and continued dancing throughout their marriage. They celebrated their 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries on the dance floor.

Anna drove truck for 35 years, helping Robert build their business. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were very special to her and she enjoyed attending all of their activities.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert Stock of Sheffield; son Roger (Carol) Stock of Sheffield, daughter Lavon Tanner (Phil Oleson) of Belmond, daughter Bonnie (Rick) Schwierjohann of Rockwell, son Jerry (Juli) Stock of Sheffield and Gene Stock (Val Haugebak) of Hampton; grandchildren, Neal Stock, Aaron (Lindsey) Stock, Ryan Stock (Kylee Schweitzer), Cole (Tatum) Tanner, Brittany (Justin) Goemaat, Troy Meinders, Krista (Brad) Kramer, Tyler Meinders, Adam (Joslyn) Stock, Jason Stock, Stephanie (Ron) Hinton, Luke Erickson and Lauren Erickson; great-grandchildren, Destynie, Morgan, Jayden, Jacoby, Avianna, Ryker and Meya.

Duane Allen Bredlow
U.S. Marine Corps (1951-1953)

Thornton — Duane Allen Bredlow passed away on Jan. 13, 2013, at Concord Care Center, in Garner, Iowa.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, Iowa, with the Rev. Keith Scott officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme, Iowa. Military Honors will be presented at the cemetery.

Duane was the first of seven children born to Clarence and Annabelle Bredlow, born November 14, 1930, in rural Klemme. He graduated from Swaledale High School in 1949. He joined the United States Marine Corps in August 1951 and was based in Del Mar, California. He achieved the rank of sergeant and following his discharge in 1953, he married Jane Pauline Blair and the newlyweds moved back to rural Rockwell, Iowa. To this union four children were born: Denice, David, William and Julie. He farmed for many years before working at the Crystal Sugar sugar beet factory in Mason City. He also worked as a mechanic at the Blue Ribbon Beef meat packing company in Mason City and then Libby Owens Ford Glass Company in Mason City.

He moved to San Bernadino, California, in 1973 and married Bettye “Maureen” Siddons. In 1975, he and Maureen moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, Duane worked for the City of Lincoln for several years before taking a job as a mechanic at National Crane Company in Waverly, Nebraska Following Maureen’s death, he moved to St. Mary, Nebraska, in 1984. He retired from National Crane in 1995 and subsequently worked part-time for Field Ford Mercury in Tecumseh, Nebraska.

In early 2002, he moved to Thornton, Iowa, where he lived until the time of his death. While in Thornton, he started his own business with his son and two grandchildren, mowing local cemeteries.

Duane enjoyed hunting trips with his sons, being a member of the NRA, and many fun times with family.

Duane is survived by his children, Denice Bredlow of Rochester, Minnesota; David (Sue) Bredlow of Dell Rapids, South Dakota; William (Julie) Bredlow of Clear Lake, Iowa; and Julie Zimmermann of Laguna Niguel, California; ten grandchildren: Armen (Mary) Varjabedian of California, Jennifer Varjabedian of California, Kim (Chet) Pascoe of Colorado, Amy (Brian) Prue of Oregon, Coleman Bredlow of South Dakota, Caramie (Justin Faini) Bredlow of South Dakota, Zachery Bredlow of Iowa, Rebeca Bredlow of Iowa, Hailey Zimmermann of California, and Jack Zimmermann of California; five great-grandchildren, Noaha Pascoe, Makenaha Pascoe, Sophia Prue, Collin Prue, and Lucy Faini; sisters Nola (Roger) Johnson of Charles City, Iowa; Letha (Keith) Markwardt of Mason City, Iowa; Myra (Dale) Karsjens of Mason City; Velma (Jerry) Mondahl of Mason City, and his sister-in-law Marlene (Dennis) Bredlow of Plymouth, Minn.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gene L. Grell

Gene L. Grell, son of the late Clinton Lewis and Adele Vanden Heuvel Grell, entered eternal life on Jan. 2, 2013.

He was born July 14, 1959, at San Antonio, Texas. He was predeceased by his infant sister, Mary Ann.

He is survived by his fiancé Christina M. Gasparich and her two sons, Connor and Christian, brothers Dudley C., Christopher V., and John A. Grell, niece, Ariana E. Grell, and aunt Dorothy Grell Bethea.

Gene, an experienced pilot with over 2,700 helicopter flight hours, was flying a Med Trans medical helicopter along with two crew members to pick up a patient at a nearby hospital. The helicopter crashed the evening of January 2, near Ventura, Iowa. All flight crew members were lost.

Gene graduated from Winston Churchill High School, San Antonio, Texas, in 1977. He then graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Computer Science.

From there he pursued a career in the computer industry in the Silicon Valley for the next 20 years. The following 10 years he pursued his passion for flying in aviation, both with fixed wing aircraft and helicopters.

Gene was an avid snow skier, scuba diver, and world traveler. He also enjoyed his family and friends. He will be missed by many.

A memorial Mass service for Gene will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 223 East Summit Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78212, Saturday, January 19, at 11 a.m., followed by a Lunch Reception in the Madonna Room behind the church starting at noon. The Celebrant will be Father Jonathan Felux. There will not be a cemetery service.

Dothan, Alabama — Roy A. Myhr, a resident of Dothan, Alabama, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at his residence. He was 84.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2 until 3:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Byrd Funeral Home in Dothan.

Burial will be held at a later date in Iowa.

Mr. Myhr was born November 7, 1928, in Sioux City, Iowa. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps after high school and served during the Korean War. He lived many years in this area including Clear Lake, Forest City and Crystal Lake. Recently, he had resided in Ocala, Florida, for many years prior to moving to Dothan a few months ago. Mr. Myhr was a loving Christian husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed life to its fullest in every endeavor. He was a member of the Ocala United Methodist Church.

Mr. Myhr was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Opal Myhr, a brother, Keith Myhr and a grandson, Patrick Dalton.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Myhr, Dothan; a son, Scot (Sheryl) Myhr, Pittsburgh, Pa.; a daughter, Jodi Dalton, Dothan; four grandchildren, Erica Dalton and Tyler Dalton, both of Auburn and Corrie Myhr and Esther Myhr, both of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a brother, Dean Myhr, of Tucson, Ariz.; many nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

Ackley — Lucille Toomsen, 98, of Ackley, and formerly of Geneva, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at the Younker Rehabilitation Unit of the Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines.

A Celebration of Life service for Lucille Toomsen will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 496 Raven Avenue, Geneva. A time of visitation will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at the Linn’s Funeral Home, 903 Cerro Gordo Ave., Ackley, and also one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Burial will be at a later date at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Geneva.

Marble Rock —Dorothy Clara Staudt, 100, formally of Marble Rock, died on Jan. 13, 2013, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Roseville, Iowa. Mon-signor Walter Brunkan will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Roseville.

Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, and again one hour prior to services at the church. A Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Scripture Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

FLOYD — Kathleen “Kay” Goodno, 98, of Iowa Falls, formerly of Charles City, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services for Kay Goodno will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd. Associate Pastor Jan Tjaden will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd.

 Pauline Lucille Zielie

Mason City — Pauline Lucille Zielie, 85, 161 B Gracious Estates, Mason City, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at her home.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, Iowa, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, 5 to 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Pauline L. Zielie Memorial Fund.

Pauline was born May 17, 1928, in Britt, Hancock County, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Mildred (Clark) Palmer. She grew up in Clear Lake and lived there most of her life. She married Maurice Zielie Dec. 26, 1959, in Wells, Minn. She worked at the Clear Lake Bakery for over 27 years. She then worked at Unisys in Clear Lake and the Hanford Inn in Mason City.

Pauline loved working. She never quit working, both in the home and outside home. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting; she was known for her beautiful afghan blankets. She won ribbons at the fair for her work, and supplied the family with her creative handwork. She was a Hawkeye fan and always enjoyed helping others. She was like a nurse to her good friend Suzie.

Pauline in survived by her three children, Donna Law and her husband Duane, Clear Lake, Donald Broome and his wife Janice, Des Moines, Iowa, and Vickie Schmidt and her husband John, Clear Lake; four grandchildren Marne Markwardt, Clear Lake, Mark (Allison) Law, Coralville, Iowa, Jennifer (Germaine) Brinson, Phoenix, Arizoona, and Michelle (Matt) Jones, Clear Lake; nine great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; one brother Paul Palmer, Bentonville, Arkansas, and one sister Bernice Hammond, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and four sisters; and special friend Suzie Carmany.

CLARION — Archie M. Nodland, 90, of Clarion, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Iowa Specialty Hospital-Clarion.

ALGONA — Wilma Haupert, 94, of Algona, died on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, with Father John Thomas celebrating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Bancroft.
