Kenneth Elmer Muyskens

January 06, 2013

KANAWHA — Kenneth Elmer Muyskens, 79, formerly of Kanawha, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Kenneth Muyskens will be held on Monday, Jan. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church, 129 E. Third St., in Kanawha, with Pastor Steve Schulz officiating. Burial will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City at 4 p.m. on Monday.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, Jan. 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 E. Second St., in Kanawha, and continue one hour prior to services at the church in Kanawha on Monday.

There will also be a brief visitation and prayer service on Monday, Jan. 7, at 3 p.m. at First Reformed Church in Orange City.

Kenneth Elmer Muyskens, born Dec. 20, 1933, was the second child of John C. Muyskens and Grace nee DeJager Muyskens. He grew up on the family farm, a mile west of Newkirk, Iowa, milking cows before attending Newkirk Public School.

Ken graduated from Newkirk after being the center on the state championship basketball team of 1951. He then attended Northwestern Junior College for two years and finished his bachelor’s degree at Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, where he not only played basketball, but also was student body president and published in Who’s Who of College Students 1954. He graduated in 1955 with a degree in economics and social studies.

At Westmar, Ken met the love of his life, Doris June. They were married Aug. 19, 1955, by all accounts, “the hottest day of the year.” Ken taught and coached basketball and other sports at Melvin, Hubbard and New Providence, Iowa, taking a 10-year hiatus to go into full-time sales work.

Ken returned to teaching at Twin Rivers Community Schools, Bode, Iowa, once his daughters reached high school age, in order to spend more time with his children. Eventually, he taught and coached all his children, completing his teaching career in Kanawha, Iowa, where all five of his children graduated from high school.

Ken was always very active in the churches of which he was a member, teaching high school, college-age, or adult Sunday School classes, serving as deacon and elder, leading a county-wide evangelism effort, filling pulpits as a lay preacher and serving on the state Child Evangelism Board.

Ken impacted many lives with his dynamic and firmly grounded faith in God, leading his family in devotions at every meal. Every decision was bathed in prayer and Christ was very evidently the center of his marriage and his family.

He shared that faith most strongly with the five children he leaves behind: Deborah (Ron) Ausborn of Lytton, Iowa, Karla (Dean) Smidt of Kanawha, Iowa, Kent (Kristi) Muyskens of Yale, Iowa, Dennis (Susan) Muyskens of Mason City, Iowa, Kevin (Sandy) Muyskens of Sheldon, Iowa; as well as his 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris; two sisters: Joyce (Howard) Hop and Sharon (Wayne) Vander Schaaf, both of Orange City, Iowa; many cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as hundreds of students whose lives he impacted.

“Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.” — Ps. 127:3-5.

“Children’s children are a crown to the aged and parents are the pride of their children.” — Pr. 17:6

“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.” — Dt. 11: 18-21.

Ken spent the last years of his life in Sheldon, Iowa, to be closer to his sisters and youngest son and family, and the last few months at Good Shepherd Home in Mason City, near to son Dennis.

Jalmer Solyst

FOREST CITY — Jalmer Solyst, 103, of Forest City, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Jalmer Mandius Solyst was born on Sept. 12, 1909, at McCallsburg, Iowa, the son of John and Minnie (Holm) Solyst. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church of Belmond, Iowa, by his great uncle, Dr. H. C. Holm, vice president of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America.

For a short time, the family lived in Belmond, Iowa, and then later moved to Forest City, Iowa. Jalmer’s first lessons in Sunday School were in the Norwegian language. He was a very active member of the church’s children’s choir and was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran in Forest City.

During his childhood years, Jalmer’s life was significantly affected by the scarlet fever epidemic that was rampant in the country at the time. One of the side effects of the disease was hearing loss. In spite of several attempts to address this handicap the condition worsened due to an electric treatment by a local chiropractor that resulted in the development of mastoids and severe pain.

With this kind of handicap, school became increasingly difficult and with no special help or considerations he withdrew from school halfway through his 10th grade year.

As the years passed, Jalmer and his older brother Holm entered into a farming partnership. With the advent of World War II, Jalmer left the farm and worked in a defense plant in Des Moines for a short period of time.

With his interest in cars, he studied up on auto mechanics and was employed by the Chevrolet garage in Forest City. At the conclusion of the war, he bought a farm and engaged again in his first love. Jalmer was a good steward of the land he owned and after several years he received a state honor for his conservation practices from the state of Iowa.

His farming gave his creative mind the opportunity to produce a number of small tools which would make his farming practice easier and more efficient. Jalmer has to his credit two United States patents.

Jalmer loved the children. Whenever a child was crying, Jalmer was there to comfort. Whenever a child needed help, he was there to help. If the child wanted someone with whom to play, Jalmer’s playful spirit was always there.

Jalmer was very well known for his kindness toward anyone he met. He was always available wherever needed and wherever he could help. He was there for his family members, his neighbors as well as strangers. Jalmer was always there if anyone needed comfort or sympathy or was in trouble. He was a friend to all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Minnie Solyst; a brother, Holm Solyst; and sisters, Harriet DeJong and Jannethe Solyst.

He is survived by a brother, Ephraim Solyst of Kerkhoven, Minn.; a sister, Wilma Belsheim of Lake Mills; and several nieces and nephews.

He will be laid to rest in the Oakland Cemetery, Forest City.
