Jean Geraldine (Schoneman) Polsdofer

ROCKWELL, Iowa — Jean Geraldine (Schoneman) Polsdofer, 90, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2013, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell, Iowa, where she had resided since August of 2010.

Online condolences may be left at www. Fullertonfh.com.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 Second Street South, Rockwell, Iowa. The Reverend Rhea Evanson will be officiating.

Interment will follow at the Rockwell Cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Hospice of North Iowa in remembrance of Geraldine.

Geraldine was born on a farm west of Swaledale, Iowa, on December 16, 1922, to Henry and Matilda (Jorgensen) Schoneman. She was baptized and confirmed in the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton, Iowa.

She grew up in Swaledale, attended Swaledale Public School and graduated with the class of 1940. Geraldine fondly remembered being a part of the Swaledale girls high school basketball team that played in the state tournament in 1939.

On July 14, 1940, Geraldine married James Polsdofer, also of Swaledale, Iowa. They resided in Swaledale and Radcliff, but lived most of their life in Rockwell. Geraldine and Jim have three children: Larry (Debbie) Polsdofer of Longmont, Colorado; Edwin (Nancy) Polsdofer of Dallas, Texas; and Janet (Bill) Alger of Clear Lake, Iowa. They have seven grandchildren: Terry (Melonie), Douglas, Diane, Steven, Erik, Elizabeth (Jason), Sara (Scott); nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Geraldine has one surviving sister-in-law, Gladys Schoneman of Clear Lake, Iowa.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Roger; her brother-in-law, Chuck; sister-in-law, Phyllis; a grandson, Kenyon; and a great-grandson, Troy.

Geraldine worked outside the home for many years. As an adult she studied accounting at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) and was then employed by Vic and Van Accounting Associates in Mason City. Eventually she became the bookkeeper for the Burchinal Cooperative Elevator where she retired in 1985. She was very detail oriented in her work, making her an exceptional bookkeeper both on the job, and with finances.

After retirement, Geraldine and Jim spent many winters in Arizona, escaping from the cold weather and enjoying good times with friends, both old and new.

Geraldine and Jim were longtime members of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell where Geraldine had been active in many church activities including Ladies Circle, Fellowship, Hostess committee, choir and Sunday school. She also enjoyed being a part of the Rockwell Grandmothers Club. She loved to play golf and especially enjoyed the times she was able to golf with her grandson from Colorado.

Geraldine was a beautiful seamstress, sewing many of her own clothes and also sewing for her daughter and granddaughters. She spent countless hours making Janet’s wedding gown and veil.

Geraldine enjoyed many common interests with her husband. They were active in the Rockwell Senior Citizens Center and had also been members of the Wig-Wam-Wagon Camp Club for many years. They enjoyed dancing, traveling and camping.

After celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary in July 2010, Geraldine’s health caused her to move into the nursing home in Rockwell. She was saddened to leave her home and live separately from Jim, but they made the best of it. Jim was able to be there most days to have lunch with Geraldine and attend many of the daily activities with her.

She never lost interest in her appearance, looking forward to her weekly hair appointments and daily to selecting a coordinating outfit and having her makeup on. She loved to be on the go and one of the things our family always said about Geraldine is, if the wheels were turning on the car, she wanted to be in it!

Geraldine will also be remembered by her family for making the absolute best lemon meringue pie!

Geraldine had a strong faith. She loved spending time with family and friends. She will be dearly missed by her husband, Jim, by her children, grandchildren, and many other family and friends.

Jim and the family wish to thank everyone at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home for their thoughtful support and for the wonderful care provided to Geraldine.

Monsignor Thomas Ralph
U.S. Army   WWII

DUBUQUE — Monsignor Thomas Ralph, former Witness editor, dies at 87.

Memorial Mass set for Friday, Aug. 16.

A memorial Mass for Monsignor Thomas J. Ralph, 87, is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at 11 a.m., at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque.

He died on Monday, July 29, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque. He was formerly the editor of The Witness, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

Monsignor Ralph, formerly of 400 Woodland Ridge in Dubuque, donated his body to the University of Iowa Medical School, Iowa City.

Among other things, he was well known for his well-written weekly editorials in The Witness and for his gourmet cooking, hosting Sunday evening dinners for other clergy even after retirement.

He has no immediate survivors.

Monsignor Ralph was born June 4, 1926, in New Hampton, the son of Thomas “Glenn” and Mary “Eileen” (Smith) Ralph. The family moved in 1928 to Mason City where the Dubuque Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary schooled him at St. Joseph grade and high school.

Following graduation from high school in May 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Army on Aug. 15 of that year. He was assigned to infantry training at Fort Hood, Texas.

The regiment ended up in Belgium and on to Aachen, Germany, where it was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division. About two hours before the regiment was to be deployed to the front lines, he was called out by name to the G-1 (personnel) section of the Rear Division Headquarters, where he was asked to take a typing test.

He was told to get his equipment and return to the office. Not knowing where he was going, he had been assigned to the G-4 section of the Forward 9th Division Headquarters. His typing skills gave him duties that saved him from the front lines.

At war’s end, having crossed the Rhine River at Remagen, two days before the bridge collapsed, killing over 200, the division was in Kothen, Germany. All American forces were deployed to Bavaria, Southern Germany to the American Zone of Occupation.

He was rotated to Fort Sheridan, Ill., where he was discharged in June 1946 with the rank of master sergeant.

He attributes this part of his life to Divine Providence, the prayers of his parents, and Sister Mary Laurayne Mahoney, PBVM, for her typing class at St. Joseph High School, Mason City.

He graduated from Loras College and Catholic University summer sessions, both in Dubuque, in English Literature. He completed theological studies at Mount St. Bernard Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood Feb. 4, 1956, at St. Raphael Cathedral, both in Dubuque, by Archbishop Leo J. Binz.

He served as associate pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Cedar Rapids, 1956-57. He was appointed associate editor of The Witness in 1957, where he remained until his retirement in 2002.

He was in residence at St. Patrick Parish in Dubuque, where he celebrated daily Mass for the Sisters of Charity, BVM, and Sunday Masses at St. Patrick Church until 1967 when he was appointed chaplain at the former St. Anthony Home, then on the Mercy Medical Center campus, and at Mercy Medical Center, both in Dubuque.

In 1969 he became resident pastor of St. Theresa Parish, LaMotte and administrator to Assumption Parish (Sylvia), Zwingle, where he remained for 20 years. He was named prelate of honor (monsignor) in 1987; the parishioners gave him a gold watch.

He was appointed pastor of St. Lawrence Parish, Otter Creek, in 1988, where he remained until retirement in 2002. With the clustering of five parishes in 1999, he was named sacramental priest to the parishes in Andrew, LaMotte, Otter Creek, St. Theresa and Assumption Sylvia until retirement.

He became editor of The Witness in 1980 on the death of the Rev. Gerald Shekleton. He remained editor until his retirement in 2002, having been the only editor of the last three in that position not to die on the job.

Special thanks to Hospice of Dubuque, Drs. Abele, Holm, Kraemer, and Fuerste, and the staff of Stonehill Care Center for their compassionate care of Father Tom.

Memorials may be given to Seminarian Education Fund of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, or The Witness of the Archdiocese of Dubuque.
