Donald O. Thompson
U.S. Navy and Air Force

Clear Lake — Donald O. Thompson, 86, of Clear Lake, Iowa, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2013, at his South Shore home with his wife of 67 years, Barbara, son John and daughter-in-law Colleen at his side.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 12, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. Pastor Dean Hess will be officiating, joined by members of Don’s family, Pastors Matt Larson and Kally Elliott.

It will be a Celebration of Life and a witness to God’s glory!

Visitation will be Sunday, August 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake.

Donald Oscar Thompson was born on February 27, 1927, to Oscar and Erma Thompson at home in Clear Lake.

Don grew up in Clear Lake, worked during school delivering groceries and newspapers and at a meat packing facility in Mason City. He played trumpet in bands and won a national championship in a band contest. He interviewed with bandleader Stan Kenton.

Don enjoyed his high school years at Clear Lake participating in three sports, band, and was dedicated to academics. Since moving back to Clear Lake he reconnected with many classmates and thoroughly enjoyed monthly Saturday morning breakfast with them.

He was drafted into the Navy in the summer of 1945. During boot camp, the Navy determined Don should attend NROTC at University of Idaho, where he met Barbara Newell, fell in love and was married. The two moved back to Iowa where he attended the University of Iowa graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. degree in physics, a master’s and Ph.D. in 1953 and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He transferred branches of service, becoming a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force and worked at its Cambridge, Massachusetts, research facility for two years. He was transferred to Tennessee as a part of the Atomic Energy Commission and assigned to the Oak Ridge National Laboratories in 1954. During this time, he built the cabin cruiser he launched in 1963, which is still enjoyed by the family on Clear Lake and the Mississippi River.

Don returned to civilian life in 1963 and worked for North American Aviation Science Center in California for 15 years. In 1979 Don and Barbara moved to Ames, Iowa, where he was instrumental in developing the Center for Non-Destructive Evaluation (CNDE) and Quantitative Non-Destructive Evaluation (QNDE) at Iowa State University. Together with his colleagues and staff, they developed the center into a world-class scientific organization. In 1991 Don was honored for his distinguished contributions to engineering and science by election to the National Academy of Engineering of the United States of America. In 2002 he was one of only nineteen foreign scientists to be elected India’s National Academy of Engineering.

Don was honored by Iowa State University as one of one hundred and fifty visionaries that shaped the institution. In July, less than a week before he died, Don attended the 40th anniversary of QNDE held in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was recognized as a leader in the development of the global Nondestructive Evaluation community and the founder of Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation. One of Don’s long time colleagues said in his speech, “Don ruled with an iron hand, but was compassionate and the best boss I have ever known.”

In 1999, Don and Barbara returned to Clear Lake to a home they call “The Heritage,” a home they designed and built to give their family a place to share the joy of being together.

Don was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served on the benevolence committee and assisted in Saturday night services by reading the lessons from scripture. Together with his small group they installed three crosses on the property of Harmony Ranch along Interstate 35, a gift for who pass through Clear Lake.

He enjoyed playing his trumpet in three local bands, The Nonsemble, New Horizon Band and the North Iowa Concert Band. He loved Clear Lake, its history and its people.

Don had a quiet yet powerful faith in Jesus that was passed on as a significant part of his heritage.

Don loved his family. How he enjoyed the frequent visits from his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each visit ending with a hug and a “Come back soon!”

He also loved his dogs, such good friends. But as he lived through the joys and challenges of life it was his wife, Barbara, who brought him his deepest joy and peace.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Oscar, (1955), his mother, Erma (1983) and his older brother, Keith who died at the age of 3 days in 1924.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, three sons, Jim, Steve and John and their spouses, nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Don sought to use the gifts and talents God had given him to the fullest. He honored that in others. He will be sorely missed, but the legacy he leaves will always be a bright shining light, and inspiration to his family, friends and colleagues.

Shirley (Reinke) Plagge

Latimer — Shirley (Reinke) Plagge, of Latimer, Iowa, passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2013. She was 90 years old and living at the Franklin Country View Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Shirley was born on Jan. 21, 1923, the third daughter of Lydia (Weber) and Herbert Reinke in Geneva, Iowa. Shirley always described her childhood as wonderful, full of family love and time to dream. Many of the happiest memories were shared with her sister Ruth. Though she grew up during the Depression, Shirley felt her life was rich and “the best of times.”

Shirley attended Geneva Schools, graduating with a life-long love of learning and friendships. Throughout life, Shirley valued world awareness and thoroughly enjoyed discussions on vast topics supported by her voracious reading.

Following a courtship that commenced with a blind date, Shirley was united in marriage to LaVern Plagge on Nov. 10, 1941, in Geneva, Iowa. World War II impacted farming plans and instead guided them to early homes near army bases in Kansas and Washington, the first of their many travels, both domestic and international. To this union two children, a son, Jerry, and a daughter, Joyce, were born. Shirley appreciated her farm life in rural Latimer; a life filled with the cycles of growing and adventures both great and small. Shirley always took pride in her role as a homemaker and was an award-winning baker, most noted for rolls. Her expansive flower gardens stopped traffic and enriched her home, while fresh garden produce contributed to amazing meals for family and friends. Shirley thrived wherever “planted,” especially in the home she and Lavern created within Latimer where grandchildren loved the combination of farm adventures as well as the beautiful park next door that they considered their world.

Most valued in Shirley’s life were always the family, the church, and her wide community of friends. Her early years at the Geneva Methodist Church as well as her life at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer nourished her legacy of service and her strong Christian commitment. As a dedicated member of Immanuel, she assumed a litany of leadership, teaching, and involvement roles. She will always be remembered for her devotion to family, reveling in family fun and special events. Memories reflect her zest for living, the happiness of her laughter, her friendship offered to all, and her dedication to making the world better for others. Shirley was a woman of strong faith, a vibrant example of care, compassion and social action.

Her dedication to helping others is displayed in the many organizations benefitting from her focus and volunteer commitments, especially CAL Community Schools, CAL Over 60’s, Immanuel UCC, Latimer Park Society and others. Her memory is to be honored through memorials to the organizations she greatly valued.

Among those cherishing her memory are: her children Jerry and Jeanne Plagge, Joyce and Donald Benes; her grandchildren: Scott (Julie) Plagge, Troy (Carol) Plagge, Gabrielle Sandberg, York (fianceé Elizabeth), Kent (Jessica) and Kyle; her great grandchildren: Brandon, Bryan, Jordan, Amanda, Ryley, Paige, Kaia and Lucas; four great great granddaughters; sisters-in-law Evonne Plagge, Lorena Koch, Elaine Reinke, along with many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom she so valued.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband LaVern, sisters Ruth and Marlys, parents-in-law Louise and Louis Plagge, infant granddaughter Dawn Ranae, brothers-in-law Herbert Plagge, Wayne Plagge, Don Koch, Don Reinke, and sister-in-law Margaret Plagge.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 10, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer, with Pastor Lindsey Braun officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 9, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., prior to the service on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Marion Center Cemetery in rural Latimer. Joseph Henry “Joe” Williamson

Mason City — Joseph Henry “Joe” Williamson, 60, of 3253 Pinnacle Court, Mason City, Iowa, formerly of Madison, Wis., died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Joe Williamson’s life was a miracle.

Born in Madison, on Nov. 4, 1952, to Lillian and Rollie Williamson, Joe was diagnosed with a brain tumor when he was 10 years old. At 13 he suffered a recurrence of the tumor and was given 24 hours to live. Joe seemed to be invincible, although his mobility was limited, his love and joy never were. He went on to work at UW Hospital Animal Research for 25 years earning “The Most Dependable Employee” award upon his retirement.

Joe’s father, Rollie, dedicated his life to giving Joe care, respect and compassion with the energy only understood by a parent who loves his child. Joe lived at home with his parents until his mother’s death, when he and his father, his best friend, moved to Mason City, Iowa. There he enjoyed working at Opportunity Village.

Joe’s favorite moments were spent following the Iowa State gymnastics team, cheering on his nieces and nephews, and fishing on Clear Lake. Many people on the lake will remember Rollie shouting in excitement, “Set the hook, Joe!” and Joe answering, “Get the net!”

Joe was welcomed into eternal life by his mother Lillian Williamson, his sister Sara, niece Kara LittelShinners, nephew Paul Williamson, and family friend Frank McNutt. Joe’s life is celebrated by his father Rolland Williamson (Anne Grady), seven sisters: Gayle Williamson, Mary Williamson, Amy (Dennis) Pyle, Alta (John) Shinners, Kara (Jim) Clawson, Paula (Al) Gavula, Lora (Neal) Bentley, brother Matt (Lillian) Williamson, and 12 nieces and nephews.

In the words of his nephew Evan: Joe Henry is gone, the guy we thought was invincible. One would say he never got a ‘fair shake’ at life: someone who could not walk, but what nonsense! A ‘fair shake’ at life never comes. That is his lesson. He managed to live without prejudice, bias or hatred while often denied the luxuries of travel, speed or self-sufficiency. As someone outside the boundaries of ‘normalcy,’ he taught everyone within those boundaries from his wheelchair. Still more important than the Joe without hatred was the Joe with happiness. Happiness is your own creation. Faces do not lie; Joe’s was full of wisdom. Fullness of enjoyment was in his smile.

There will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Humane Society of Mason City, Iowa (www.hsni.org).

Catch the big one Joe Henry!
