GRAFTON
-Irene Magdalene Hartwig, age 97, of
Grafton, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at
the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center in
Manly.
Memorial services will be held at 11
a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Emmanuel
Lutheran Church in Grafton with the Rev.
Barbara M. Wills officiating. Inurnment
will be at the Grafton Cemetery. There
will be a time for lunch and fellowship
following services at the church.
Irene was born Nov. 12, 1914, to John
and Emma (Glauwitz) Bork, at the family
home near Grafton. She was baptized in
1914 and confirmed in 1930 at the
Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton.
Irene graduated from Grafton High School
in 1932.
On March 20, 1937, she married Morley
Hartwig in the Lutheran Church at
Marshall, Wis. To this union three
children were born: Janice, Phyllis, and
Jim.
Irene was employed by Dr. William Moore
of Grafton as a receptionist/ bookkeeper
for 16 years and was a custodian for 21
years at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
She was a Sunday school teacher, charter
member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Altar
Guild, and served for many years as a
member of the Mary Martha Circle. Irene
enjoyed baking, playing cards,
socializing with friends and relatives,
and was known as a caregiver to many.
Irene is survived by her daughter,
Phyllis Peterson of Clear Lake; her son,
Jim (Shirley) Hartwig of Farmington,
Minn.; six grandchildren, Candis (Dave)
Feldt of St. Ansgar, Kevin (Mary) Cole
of Grafton, Renae (Scott) Weghorst of
Fisher, Ind., Dana (Gene) Schelest of
Orange, Calif., Matt (fiancée, Christine
Gilberts) Hartwig of Cannon Falls,
Minn., Travis (Michelle) Hartwig of
Cannon Falls, Minn.; nine
great-grandchildren, Whitney, Cole,
Adam, Garrett, Christian, John, Tyler,
Jamie and Christopher; and two sisters,
Elly Kline of Grafton and Genny Furness
of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband Morley in 1950; her
daughter, Janice Cole in 1982; two
sons-in-law, Gene Cole and Ron Peterson,
both in 2010; and 13 brothers and
sisters.

- Stuart "Stu" Auringer, 64, of
Rockwell, formerly of Floyd, died
Monday, August 6, 2012, at Mercy Medical
Center in Mason City.
Funeral services for Stu Auringer will
be held 2 p.m. Friday, August 10, at the
Floyd Grace United Methodist Church in
Floyd. Pastor Martha Bennett and
Chaplain Ed Bard will officiate. Burial
will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd.
There will be a flag presentation by the
Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and at
the church an hour prior to the service.
Stuart Paul Auringer was born December
30, 1947, at Charles City, the son of
Robert and Madalyn (Slack) Auringer. He
graduated from Charles City High School
and North Iowa Community College. Stu
served in the United States Navy from
1967 to 1970. Upon completion of his
military service Stu retired. Stu
married Carol Byram on November 14,
1971, and they later divorced. On May
18, 1998 Stu married Debra Griffin and
they later divorced. He married Patricia
Callahan of July 15, 2012.
Stu was a member of the Grace United
Methodist Church, Disabled American
Veterans, American Legion, Floyd Lions
Club and Osage Gun Club. Stu enjoyed
collecting guns, fishing, watching car
racing and spending time with friends.
He looked forward to vacationing at The
Veterans on the Lake in Ely, Minn.
Living family members include his wife,
Patricia Auringer of Rockwell; two
children, Bart Auringer of Charles City
and Emilie McMurray of Los Angeles; two
granddaughters, Emma and Lauren
McMurray; a step-daughter, Katie
Callahan of The Dalles, Ore.; a sister,
Char Lubbert of Nora Springs; and three
nieces, Jody and Kathi Lubbert and
Denise (Brian) Wilkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Merlin Willard Halverson
U.S. Navy Korean Conflict
BELMOND
- Merlin Willard Halverson, age 80, of
Kanawha and Belmond, passed away
Saturday, August 4, 2012, after a tough
battle with cancer at his residence in
Belmond.
Funeral services for Merlin W. Halverson
will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday,
August 8, at the St. Olaf Lutheran
Church west of Belmond. Pastor James
Harbaugh will officiate. Burial will
take place in the St. Olaf Lutheran
Church cemetery. Graveside military
rites will be provided by the Belmond
Honor Guard.
Visitation for Merlin W. Halverson will
be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Tuesday,
August 7, at Dugger Funeral Home, 111
Luick's Lane S., Belmond, and continue
one hour prior to services at the church
on Wednesday.

Merlin was born October 22, 1931, at his
rural Kanawha home, to Garfield Theodore
and Millie Helena (Wicks) Halverson. He
attended country school through the
eighth grade and was a 1949 graduate of
Belmond High School. Merlin served in
the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict
from 1952 to 1956. Upon his discharge
from the Navy, he returned to the family
farm and began farming with his father
and brother Garfield Jr. After retiring
from farming, he worked various jobs
until he joined Eaton Corporation in
1986. He retired from Eaton in 2001 at
the age of 70.
Merlin married Marcella Louise Draves on
January 20, 1957, at the Dows
Presbyterian Church. To this union were
born three children: Monica, Marsha and
Mark. Merlin was devoted to his family
and their many interests including 4-H
and numerous school activities.
Merlin most enjoyed bowling, golfing,
fishing, traveling, card games,
gardening and spending time with his
family and friends. Nobody was a
stranger to Merlin as he loved
conversing with people no matter how
well he knew them. Merlin was a
life-long member of St. Olaf Lutheran
Church where he was baptized and
confirmed.
Merlin is survived by his wife Marcella;
two daughters Monica (Charles Cook)
Halverson of Belmond, and Marsha (Mark)
Pederson of Effingham, Ill.; step-
grandchildren Tonia (Eric) Land of
Ankeny, Iowa, and Matt (Kara) Pederson
of Topeka, Kan., and their families;
sister-in-law Peggy Halverson of Belmond
and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents,
infant son Mark, three brothers, Melvin,
Ervin, Garfield Jr. and sisters-in-law
Esther and Shirley, a sister, Herma and
brother-in-law Brandon Roseth, two
nephews, Douglas Roseth and Curtis
Halverson.

Iowa - LeAngell Mary Hickle, 86, Manly,
died Sunday, at the Manly Nursing &
Rehabilitation Center.

LeAngell Mary Hickle was born on
February 25, 1926, in Riceville, the
daughter of Clinton and Purley (Betts)
Buttolph. LeAngell attended school in
the McIntire Independent School. She was
united in marriage to James W. Hickle on
December 28, 1942, in Osage, and to this
marriage three children were born, Gary,
Terry, and Berry. James preceded her in
death in 1999.
LeAngell was a very devoted wife,
mother, and grandmother, and for many
years she enjoyed being a cook for the
Charlie Brown Day Care Center in Mason
City until her retirement.
LeAngell was a great cook and also loved
to travel, going to Canada fishing,
collecting owls and playing jokes on her
family.
Those left to cherish her memory are
here three children, Gary (Judy) Hickle
of Floyd, Terry Hickle, and Berry
(Connie) Hickle of Manly; four
grandchildren, Curtis (Tracy) Hickle of
Burlington, Wash., Tamara (Brian)
Knudtson of Oskaloosa, Lindsay (Blake)

great-grandchildren, Maddie, Katie,

Lillian married Norris M. Johnson on
November 25, 1939. Three sons were born
to them: Melvin, Norman and David.
They farmed in the Otranto area until
1965, when Norris was employed by D.C.
Jorgensen & Sons, Inc. until 1972. They
moved to DeWitt, Iowa, and ran the
DeWitt Farm Store until moving back to
St. Ansgar in 1983.
Lillian was a member of the First
Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar.
She was preceded in death by her
husband; parents; two grandchildren,
Michelle Marie and Greg Alan; one great
grandchild, Hanna Olivia; four brothers;
three sisters.
Lillian is survived by her three sons;
Melvin (Pat) of Rochester, Minn; Norman

Jim was born July 7, 1939, in Martins
Ferry, Ohio, the son of Leland James and
Evelyn Anna (Robinson) Leasure. He
graduated from Martins Ferry Public
Academy and enlisted in the U.S. Marine
Corps on November 26, 1956. He saw
combat during the Cuban Missile Crisis
and was honorably discharged in April
1964.
Jim married Judith Ann Sweet on
September 8, 1962, at the Marine Corps
Chapel in Quantico, Va.
They lived in Waverly, Iowa before
moving to Clear Lake in the 1970s. Jim
worked for the City of Clear Lake as
Assistant City Engineer and retired as
City Engineer in the early 1980s.
He was a loyal Ohio State Buckeye and
Cleveland Browns fan.
He loved playing Farmville, spending
time with his family and enjoyed Nascar
racing. He was a life time member of the
Clear Lake V.F.W. and a member of the
Marine Corps League; and also a member
of Galilean Lutheran Church.
Jim is survived by five children: Tamara
Leasure, Charles City, Iowa, Leanne
Hicks and her husband Jeff, Ventura,
Iowa, Jeff Leasure and his wife Sara,
Cortland, Ohio, Mary Holstad and her
husband Mark, Northwood, Iowa, and Ev
Gansen and her husband Cory, Clear Lake;
ten grandchildren: David (Kacey) Brandt,
Robert Brandt, Cathleen Brandt, Nick
Leasure, Vinny Leasure, Sofia Leasure,
Mindy Holstad, Tyler Holstad, Samantha
Gansen and Anthony Gansen; seven

Gerald P. "Jerry" Lee

CITY, Colo. - Gerald P (Jerry) Lee, 71
of 21287 E. 115th Ave., Commerce City,
Colo., passed away July 25, 2012, after
a long illness in Denver, Colo. Per his
wishes, he was cremated.
A memorial service will be held at a
later date in Iowa.
Jerry, son of Raymond and Mildred
(Dietrich) Lee was born June 10, 1941,
in Manly, Iowa. He attended the Manly
school system, graduating with North
Central Community School class of 1960.
He furthered his education in heating
and air conditioning trade school in
Omaha Neb. Jerry worked in heating and
air conditioning in Denver until
retiring in 1995.
Jerry enjoyed traveling and camping in
his RV. He also enjoyed his horses and
llamas, wood working, fishing, riding
his motorcycle and farming.
Jerry also looked forward into coming
back to Iowa to help on the farm with
spring planting and fall harvesting.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of
48 years, Merle of Commerce City;
brothers Marlyn (Faye) Lee of Mason
City, Iowa, Carlton (Buck) Dianne Lee of
Mason City; sisters Sharron (David)
Petznick of Northwood, Iowa, Gloria and
(Scott) Helling of Ames, Iowa, along
with many neices, nephews and cousins;

Iowa, died Thursday, August 2, 2012, in
Kenora, Ontario, Canada, while on his
42nd annual fishing trip with lifelong
friends.

Tom was born September 24, 1947, in
Ames, Iowa, the son of Lawrence
Frederick and Jenny Lucille (Pullen)
Simmering. Tom graduated from Ames High
School in 1966, where he excelled on the
football field for the Little Cyclones,
then continued on to graduate from
Luther College in 1970, and Iowa State
University Graduate School in 1973.
Tom married JoEllen Steil on December
21, 2004.
Tom was a partner in the municipal
consulting firm of Simmering-Cory, Inc.
Tom was well known in the State of Iowa
for his knowledge of and expertise in
Urban Renewal and Urban Revitalization.
He assisted more than 250 cities and
counties with preparing and implementing
Urban Renewal and Urban Revitalization
Plans that resulted in a variety of
development projects across the state.
He very much enjoyed his work and the
interesting people he met during his
associations with the various cities and
counties that he worked for.
Tom believed there was no better place
in the world than Clear Lake, and
enjoyed participating in many of the
activities that were part of the lake
community, including large family
gatherings during the 4th of July,
attending functions at the Surf, helping
the Parks and Recreation Department with
watering of the downtown flower baskets,
bike rides around the lake, and
participating in efforts of the
Association of the Preservation of Clear
Lake and the CLEAR project.
In addition, Tom was on the Board of
Directors of the Clear Lake Industrial
Development Corporation, serving as its
President during 2009. During his tenure
with the Development Corporation, he was
also an active participant in the
creation of the North Iowa Corridor
Economic Development Corporation.
He enjoyed many outdoor activities
including fishing, hunting, trap
shooting at the Owatonna and Ventura gun
clubs, boating, and Iowa State football
games.
Tom's family and friends will always
remember him as incredibly
compassionate. His intense caring and
generosity for the people around him
will leave a legacy that we all can only
aspire to reach in life.

longtime resident of Iowa City, died on
Sunday, August 5, 2012, at Mercy
Hospital in Iowa City.

Helen Eloise Suby was born May 5, 1922,
on a farm near Fertile, Iowa. She was
the daughter of Henry R. Suby and Iva F.
Kirk Suby. Helen graduated from Fertile
Consolidated High School in 1940. She
married Alvin B. Sparby on December 31,
1945, in the Kensett Lutheran Church
Parish. They lived in Humboldt and
Clarion, Iowa, before moving to Iowa
City with their two children, Debra and
Ronald in 1960.
Helen was a studio photography painter
for many years. She was also employed
several years at ACT in Iowa City. She
enjoyed painting, decorating, sewing,
and doing things with her loving family
and friends. She and Alvin were ardent
canoers, members of Gloria Dei Lutheran
Church, Adult Fellowships of Iowa City,
Norse Club and Moose Lodge. She enjoyed
playing bingo and was a fan of "The
Lawrence Welk Show."
Helen's family includes her two
granddaughters, Tonya McNabb of Seattle,
Wash., and Kim (Eric) Eickman of

- Joan Brown, 75, of Osage, passed away
Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at home
surrounded by family.
Memorial services will be held at 11
a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the First
Baptist Church in Osage with Pastor
Roger Davies presiding with an inurnment
at 1:30 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery
in Riceville.
A gathering of family and friends will
be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2012,
at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in
Osage. There will be a time for lunch
and fellowship following the service at
the church on Saturday.

Joan A. Stuehrk was born March 14, 1937,
in Hoskins, Neb., to Hans and Hertha (Gnirk)
Stuehrk. The family moved to Iowa in
1942, living in the Zearing area. She
graduated from Zearing High School.
Joan was united in marriage to Floyd
Roske in 1954, they were blessed with
five children. They later divorced. She
married Paul Brown of Riceville, in
1988, with whom she had almost 24
wonderful years.
Joan worked on the family dairy farm
keeping the books and caring for her
family. She later worked as an office
manager for Maple Manor in Osage, a bank
teller at First Citizens in Osage, and
at Wright Plumbing in Osage. Joan
treasured time with her family most of
all and enjoyed spending time with many
friends.
She was an avid letter writer having
many pen pals, one of whom she
corresponded with for over 50 years, and
another for 60 years.
Joan also loved sewing and especially
making quilts. Every child, grandchild,
and great grandchild has received at
least one of these lovingly made
treasures. Joan was also active in their
church, playing the piano, serving as
treasurer and participating in many
other activities.
Joan is survived by her husband, Paul of
Osage; sons, Russell (Rowena) Roske of
Spring Green, Wis., and Kevin (Julie)
Roske of Hillsdale, Wis.; daughters,
Wendy (Les) Gibbs of Shell Rock, Jill

Lila Feltus was born Jan. 11, 1927, the
first of three daughters, to Mark and
Gladys (Swann) Ferguson of La Grange,
Ill. In 1935, the family moved to
Charles City where she graduated from
high school in 1945. She attended St.
Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.,
before returning to the Charles City
area. Lila found great joy in music and
for many years played the piano at the
Congregational Church. Lila was employed
at her parents' business, the Charles
City Laundry, and later, at The
Optometric Center.
On May 5, 1972, Lila married Willard D.
Feltus in Charles City and welcomed him,
with eight children, into her home. In
addition to being a loving stepmother,
Lila always had a warm spot in her heart
for her nieces and nephews, the children
of Jean (Robert) Meyer and Helen (John)
Bullen.
Lila enjoyed telling stories of her
childhood, such as attending the Chicago
World's Fair in 1933, riding the train
to Charles City to visit her
grandparents, and taking her father's
Red Cross First Aid Class when she was
only eight.
Living family members include her
husband of 40 years, Willard Feltus,
stepchildren: Jane Ferch of Clarksville,
Anne (Don) McWilliams of Dumont, Mary
Lou Shaw of Marble Rock, Celia (Randy
Sorensen) Feltus of Coralville, Shawn

Morris Menno Isebrand was born Oct. 14,
1919, in rural Titonka, the son of Senus
and Edith (Pannkuk) Isebrand. He was
baptized and confirmed at Ramsey
Reformed Church, rural Titonka. He
graduated from Titonka High School in
1938.
After graduation, Morris worked for
several local farmers where he met his
future bride. He was inducted into the
U.S. Army in September 1942 and served
in the 516th Anti-Aircraft Artillery
unit. He started his radar technology
training traveling to North Carolina,
Kansas City, Mo., and back to North
Carolina before being deployed to Camp
Callen in San Diego, Calif., and finally
to Camp Hon in the Hawaiian Islands
where he helped to train troops.
During a two-week leave in 1943, Morris
asked his fiancé, Doris Franzen, to
marry him. On May 14, Pastor William
Planz married Morris and Doris at
Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Titonka.
He was married to his beloved darling
for 69 years and they were blessed with
seven children. When Morris came home
from the service in January 1946, he
moved with his family to a Titonka
farmstead where he continued his love of
farming until he retired in 1984.
He was active at Immanuel Lutheran
Church, including serving on the church
council and as Sunday School
superintendent. Morris was also a member
of the Titonka American Legion Breen
Post 465.
Morris had many hobbies. In his early
years he enjoyed weekly league bowling,
horseshoe games, pheasant hunting, card
and board games with family and friends,
fishing and even a few years of square
dancing. Many games of pool were played
with his kids and grandkids. After
retirement he discovered a hidden talent
of wood carving. He enjoyed golf with
friends and in later years a love of
Sudoku puzzles, computer card games and
morning coffee with friends at the Red
Dog Lounge where lots of laughs were
shared.
In October, 2010, Morris was thrilled to
fly to Washington, D.C., with seven of
his World War II veteran friends via the
Central Iowa Honor Flight. While there,
they toured many sites including the
World War II Memorial.
On Aug. 4, 2012, Morris died
unexpectedly and peacefully at the age
of 92. He always enjoyed helping others
and even in his death he volunteered his
body as a donor to bring healing to
others in need. He will be missed by his
family and a multitude of friends. May
God bless his memory.

attended Mercy School of Nursing in

graduating in 1949.
She was united in marriage to Donald J.
Nelson on Oct. 22, 1949.
Dolores spent her early married life as
a devoted wife and mother. In 1973, she
started back to work as a registered
nurse. She worked for Dr. Tom Mangan,at
the Forest City Community Hospital and
at Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.
She worked at the Good Samaritan Center
for 27 years total, 10 years as director
of nursing. Dolores also was a 4-H
leader of the Forest Hustlers.
Dolores loved to travel -taking numerous
bus trips including trips to Rome,
Italy; Alaska; Hawaii and Canada.
Dolores loved gardening, birdwatching,
visiting casinos, playing bingo and
playing cards with friends.
Dolores was active in St. James Catholic
Church, and volunteered at Good
Samaritan Center. She enjoyed taking
friends and family members to doctor
appointments.
Dolores is survived by her five
children: Arlis (Charles) Bode, South
Dakota; Larry Nelson, Alan Nelson, Tim
(Deb) Nelson and Dan Nelson all of
Forest City; one sister, Joan (Eugene)
Graham, Dayton, Ohio, and one
sister-in-law, Donna Heidenreich, Mason

Shirley Joann Reab was born on June 13,
1940, in Buffalo Center, the daughter of
Lester L. Reab and Anna J. Frib. She
graduated from Mason City High and
enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Shirley
played softball for the U.S. Navy team.
After her military service, she remained
active as a coach and player of fast
pitch and slow pitch softball. She was
inducted into the River City Hall of
Fame.
Shirley worked for the United Parcel
Service and became the first female
center manager in the state of Iowa,
retiring in 1995.
Shirley died at the age of 72 on Aug. 6,
2012, at the Sunrise Hill Care Center in
Traer, Iowa.
She is survived by her long-time
partner, Gloria Hill; a special niece,
Shelli Reab; a brother, Lester (Glennavon)
Reab of Waterloo; a sister, Leanna (Leo)
Johnson of Mason City; a sister-in-law,

Betty Jane (Tumilson) Schindele was the
first of 14 children born to Tom and
Nellie (Fowler) Tumilson on June 6,
1924. She attended school all her life
in Rockford, graduating in 1942. Betty
helped raise her siblings, and she and
her mom made seven loaves of bread a day
and did 14 loads of laundry every other
day. After high school, Betty taught
school at a country school from
1942-1946. Later she worked at the
Rockford Brick and Tile.
On May 19, 1946, Betty married Dale
Charles Schindele. To this union two
daughters were born: Marcia Ann and
Rhonda Lee. They farmed east of Rudd
until 1955 when they moved into town.
Betty was the county assessor,
postmaster in Rudd, and then the mayor.
Betty went to work at the Floyd County
Extension Office, where she retired in
1986.
When she retired, she still enjoyed
bowling, sewing, playing cards, and
Yahtzee. She and Dale traveled with
friends, went on many trips to Oklahoma
to see their daughter and family. Betty
loved to cook and bake, and with lots of
family, the food went fast.
She is survived by daughters, Marcia

Larry was born Sept. 29, 1942, in Forest
City, the son of Harlan Edmund James and
Geraldine Merium (Sorensen) Sorenson. He
grew up in Crystal Lake, and graduated
from Crystal Lake High School in 1960.
Larry also graduated with a business
degree from the Hamilton School of
Business. Larry married Marianne Esther
Anderson on June 9, 1963, at Bethany
Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa. He
worked as a salesman/branch manager for
18 years and later became company
manager for 24 years at Plumb Supply,
before his retirement in 2005. His
career was very important to him.
Larry was a member of the First United
Methodist Church. He was also a member
of North Iowa Builders Exchange, Chamber
of Commerce, and a former member of the
Exchange Club and Lions Club. Larry
enjoyed spending time with his family -
especially his grandchildren, whom he
loved to tease. He also enjoyed golfing,
fishing, boating, entertaining family
and friends, and most of all - holding
hands with his wife.
Larry was a great protector and provider
for his family - always there to offer
guidance. He will be deeply missed.
Larry is survived by his wife of 49

Nora Springs, died Tuesday, August 7,
2012, at Nora Springs Care Center in
Nora Springs, Ia.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m. on Thursday, August 9, at the First
United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia,
Mason City, with Rev. Sean McRoberts
officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on
Wednesday, August 8, at Major Erickson

Jack was born June 27, 1931, at 928
North Harrison in Mason City, Ia., the
son of William "Bill" and Pearl
(Turnbull) Davison. He attended and
graduated from Rock Falls High School in
1949. He was married to Nada Callahan on
March 20, 1955, at the Methodist Church
in Nora Springs, Ia., to this union
three children were born, Linda, Mary Jo
and Bruce. After graduation Jack farmed
and worked at Decker's Packing Plant. He
enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 where
he served on the USS Pine Island and was
honorably discharged in 1955. He then
farmed and worked at the Nora Springs
Creamery and had dairy cows for eighteen
years, did custom spraying and ran Shell
Rock Snowmobiles in rural, Nora Springs.
Jack loved to fly airplanes and obtained
his Pilot's license at the age of 16. He
enjoyed playing golf, playing cards,
fishing, woodworking, attending his
grandsons sporting events, morel
mushroom hunting in Mich. and Ia.,
traveling in his R.V. and wintering in
Tucson, Ariz. with his wife Nada. While
in Ariz. Jack enjoyed going to garage
sales with his buddies every Saturday.
Jack enjoyed meeting new people while
traveling the country, some of which
became life-long friends. He will be
dearly missed by all who knew and loved
him.
He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 733
in Mason City, American Legion Post 0073
in Tucson, and the First United
Methodist Church and the Milk Producers
Association where he served on many
boards in many capacities through the
years. While wintering in Tucson he was
also a member of the Casa Adobes
Congregational Church where he enjoyed
volunteering.
Jack is survived by his wife of 57
years, Nada Davison of Nora Springs; his
children, Linda Harrison and husband Joe
of Gowrie, Ia., Mary Jo Rapp and husband
Dave of Ankeny, Ia. and Bruce Davison
and wife Sandy of Nora Springs;
grandchildren, Jamie Barker and special
friend Josh Wolfe of Pella, Ia., Matthew
Barker and wife Adrienne of Des Moines,
Ia., Collin Harrison and fiancée Megan
Leiser of Prairie City, Ia., Jordan

- Roger Heitland, 78, of Thornton passed
away Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City.

Church in Meservey with the Rev. Rodney
Meester presiding.
Interment with Veterans Honors by Anton-Juhl Post #440 American Legion
will be at Pleasant View Cemetery,

Retz Funeral Home, Thornton.
Roger Dean Heitland was born Sept. 29,
1933, on the family farm, a son of Henry
and Emma (Koenen) Heitland. He attended
and graduated from Thornton High School.
Roger served in the U.S. Army during the
Korean War and returned to Thornton to
farm after his discharge.
On Dec. 27, 1960, Roger was united in
marriage with Alice Bunk at the
Christian Reformed Church. They made
their home on the family farm where they
raised their four children as Alice
taught school and Roger continued to
farm, raising cattle and doing custom
work digging for many cemeteries and
trenching and footings for projects in
the area.
Roger was a lifelong member of the First
Reformed Church in Meservey where he
served as an elder, deacon and as the
church treasurer for 25 years. He was a
member of the Anton-Juhl American Legion
Post #440 in Thornton.
Roger was a hard worker who took great
pride in the appearance of the
cemeteries he worked for. He loved
animals, and caring for his cattle was
truly enjoyable for him. Many will
remember the annual field trips school
students took to his farm to learn about
and get rides on the many antique
tractors he restored.
Roger's family includes his wife of 51
years, Alice; son, Dennis Heitland,
Thornton; daughter, Julie Heitland,
Mason City; sons, Tony (Erin) Heitland,
Thornton; Loren (fiancé Fran Rodriguez)
Heitland, Thornton; and granddaughter
Rilley Heitland.
He is preceded in death by his parents;
sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and
Walt Eno; brother-in-law, Bill Fischer;
and brother, Ardell.

Ruth Marian Brenno

- Ruth Marian Brenno, 92, of Kensett,
died Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in
Mason City.
A
funeral service for Ruth will be held at
1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at the Elk
Creek Lutheran Church, 4108 Killdeer
Ave., Kensett, with Pastor Tom Martin
and Pastor Timothy Nappe officiating.
Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran
Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m.
Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel,
1008 First Ave. South, Northwood.
Visitation will also be held one hour
prior to service time on Monday at the
church.
Ruth M. (Nappe) Brenno was born on Jan.
13, 1920, in rural Lake Mills in Worth
County, the daughter of Tolleff and
Hannah (Vange) Nappe. She was baptized
and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism
through confirmation in the Sion
Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills.
Ruth received her education in the Lake
Mills and Joice community schools. She
was united in marriage to Olaf Brenno on
Jan. 28, 1940, in Mason City. He
preceded her in death 2001. After their
marriage, Olaf and Ruth farmed in the
Kensett area for many years. After her
mother (Hannah) died, her younger
brother, Donald, lived with Olaf and
Ruth for six years.
Ruth became a resident of Maple Court
Apartments in Northwood in 2004, and had
been a resident of the Lutheran
Retirement Home in Northwood since 2005
Ruth loved to travel, especially to
Norway where she made two trips,
visiting with her family and friends,
sightseeing, entertaining, Norwegian
Rosemaling, making Norwegian Pastries,
and doing ceramics at the Lutheran
Retirement Home in Northwood, where she
won several blue ribbons for her
ceramics at the Worth County Fair. In
her earlier years she loved to play the
organ.
Ruth was a member of the Elk Creek
Lutheran Church in Kensett and a member
of the Sons of Norway.
Those left to cherish her memory are her
brothers and sister, Stanley (Betty)
Nappe of Norway, Iowa; Ralph Nappe of
Mantorville, Minn.; Donald (Carol) Nappe
of Kensett; and Alice (James) Kambanos
of Glendale, Ariz.; as well as several
nieces, nephews and many other extended
family members and friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her
parents; husband, Olaf; brothers, Wilmer
Nappe, Leonard Nappe and Orlyn Nappe;
her sister, Thelma Adam; and her
sister-in-law, Evelyn Nappe.

Esther Coffin of Westside will be held
10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the
United Church of Westside with burial in
the Westside Iowa Cemetery.

away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at St.
Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Esther Mae Coffin was born July 29,
1924, near Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter
of Clifford Earl and Elma Faye
(McLaughlin) Clark. She attended country
school there until 1937 when the family
moved to Plymouth, Iowa, where she
graduated from high school in 1942.
Following her graduation from Hamilton
School of Commerce in Mason City, she
worked for First National Bank there for
several years.
Esther was married to George H. Coffin
at the Methodist Church in Plymouth on
June 2, 1945. Following their marriage,
the couple lived and worked in the Clear
Lake/Mason City area until 1961, when
George and Esther moved to Westside.
Esther spent her children's young years
at home raising them, and returned to
work in 1968 with Metropolitan
Agricultural Investments in Carroll. She
retired from the firm in 1988.
Esther was a member of the United Church
in Westside, serving as an Elder,
teaching Sunday school and Bible school,
serving on many committees, singing in
the choir and serving for many years as
financial secretary. During her many
years in Westside, Esther was also
active in her church women's group, the
American Legion Auxiliary and served as
secretary to the board of Westside
Senior Housing.
Esther enjoyed gardening and flower
arranging, bridge club and was an avid
reader. Together, she and George enjoyed
traveling and ballroom dancing. Her
greatest joy in life was always spending
time and doing things with and for her
family and friends.
Esther is survived by her husband,
George, and their three children, Ron
and his wife Dixie, Rick and his wife
Sue and Becky and her husband Jeff; six
grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
Esther was preceded in death by her
parents and five sisters.

death in 1976 she continued the farming
operation with her brother, Calvin. In
1984 she moved into Woden. She enjoyed
cooking and gardening.
She was a member of First Presbyterian
Church in Woden, UPW and taught Sunday
school for 25 years.
Nettie is survived by her brother,
Calvin, of Britt; two sisters, Delores
(John) Hansen of Minneapolis, Minn., and
Della Manning of Mesa, Ariz.; a
sister-in-law, Darlene Eden Klasse of
Forest City; and two nieces and a
nephew.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; an infant sister, Jeanette Mary
Eden; brothers, Harold Eden and Glen
(Mary) Eden; and a brother-in-law,
Curtis Post.

Pauline, the daughter of Herb and Ona (Prelip)
Nessa, was born June 7, 1931, in Forest
City. She grew up and received her
education in Forest City. She was
confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Forest City.
Pauline was united in marriage with Rudy
Freeseman on Feb. 14, 1955. The couple
lived on a farm and raised their
daughters in the Britt area.
She loved sewing, gardening, reading and
homemaking.
Pauline is survived by three daughters:
Julie Pralle of Hampton, Rosalie Davis
of Altoona, and Patty Freeseman of
Hampton; twelve grandchildren, Andrea (Pralle)
Hickman, Sara (Pralle) Schlichting, Adam

- Melvin Hackenmiller, 84, of Stacyville

Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Melvin was born June 11, 1928, at Meyer,
the son of Math and Olivia (Durben)
Hackenmiller. He graduated from Osage
High School in 1946. On Sept. 24, 1958,
he married Janice Mayer at Visitation
Catholic Church in Stacyville.
Following his high school graduation,
Melvin served his country in the Air
Force. Melvin started his career working
as a plumber and electrician at May's
Hardware in Stacyville. He worked at
Oliver Tractor for a few years and then
was employed for over 20 years at the
Stacyville Savings Bank, later known as
the St. Ansgar State Bank. He enjoyed
family vacations to Fairbault, Decorah,
New York and New Orleans. Melvin enjoyed
many hobbies during his life including
fishing, hunting, golfing, playing cards
and town league baseball.
After his retirement, he became a
skilled scroll saw woodworker much to
the delight of his family and friends.
He received many awards for his fine
craftsmanship and we are proud of him.
Melvin loved to read and was always
interested in what books his children
were reading. Melvin was a life-long
history buff and greatly enjoyed his
trip on the Honor Flight.
He will be remembered as a
well-respected member of his community,
and while he was small in stature he
possessed a big heart and quick wit. He
was a loving husband and a great dad and
grandfather.
Melvin is survived by his wife of almost
54 years, Janice of Stacyville; seven
children, Sandy (Dean Blanchard) of
Cedar Rapids, Sharon (John Cowin) of
Ledyard, Craig (Barb) Hackenmiller of
Mantorville, Minn., Laurie (Randi
Johnson) of Osage, Karla (Art Werger) of
Athens, Ohio, Mark (Teressa)
Hackenmiller of Cedar Rapids, and Matt
(Melissa) Hackenmiller of Rancho
Cucamonga, Calif.; grandchildren, Ross,
Drew, Alex, Olivia, Holly, Ezra, Abby

Celebration of Merlin's life will be 3

Merlin was born April 14, 1930, the son
of George E. and Violet A. (Anderson)
Harner on the family farm in Swea City.
He lived with his family until the age
of nine when he moved to Woodward. He
moved to Lake Mills in the 1960s and to
Opportunity Village, Clear Lake, in
1973. He resided in Twilight Cottage and
then Bedrock Cottage.
Merlin enjoyed puppies, kitties,
creative art, duct tape art, making
collages, attending music programs,
playing in the bell choir, spiritual
life activities and praying. He also
enjoyed going to movies, dances,
shopping and the many family outings. He
was also a member of Green Acres Garden
Group.
Merlin is survived by his siblings,
James (Delores) Harner, Luverne, Minn.,
June (Merlyn) Beckler, Tipton, and David
(Denise) Harner, Swea City; and his
special friend, Pam Turner; and nieces,
nephews and his Opportunity Village
family.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
