CITY - Myrna L. Bills, 96, of Mason
City, died Sunday, July 29, 2012, at the
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
on Thursday, Aug. 2, at the First United
Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave.,
with the Rev. Sean McRoberts
officiating. Interment will be at the
Rockwell Cemetery in Rockwell.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today,
Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania

Myrna was born March 27, 1916, in rural
Vandalia, Ill., (Bear Creek Township -
Fayette County), the daughter of David
and Lillie (Fansler) Blankenship. At age
5, her family moved to Williams, Iowa
and eventually Rockwell, Iowa (where she
lived for many years). She attended
rural schools. In 1979, Myrna moved to
Mason City. She married Jessie Bills on
Jan. 24, 1935 - and later divorced.
Myrna worked as a housekeeper at Mercy
Hospital from 1969 until she retired in
1981. She was a member of the First
United Methodist Church - where she
belonged to church circle. Myrna enjoyed
spending time with her family -
especially her grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and
great-great-grandchildren. She also
enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking,
traveling, and volunteering at the Good
Shepherd Health Center.

CITY - Lorraine Brackey, 81, of Mason
City went to be with her LORD and
SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST, on Sunday, July
29, 2012, at 3:20 p.m. She had been
residing at the I.O.O.F. Home since her
sudden illness on July 1.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m., Thursday, Aug. 2, at First Baptist
Church, 125 East State St. with the Rev.
Ron Stein officiating. Interment will be
in the Stout Cemetery, Stout, at 2 p.m.
Thursday.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today,
Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania
Avenue, Mason City, Iowa.

Lorraine was born Sept. 13, 1930, in New
Hartford, Iowa, one of two twin
daughters of Fred and Hattie (Brandt)
Meyer. The family moved to Mason City in
1933. She attended Mason City schools.
Lorraine and her family attended church
at The Gospel Hall and Mason City
Christian Assembly in Mason City. She
accepted Jesus as her personal Saviour,
on Feb. 16,1947. She was baptized on
Sept. 19, 1947.
She worked at Mercy Hospital as a
surgical technician until she took a job
with Dr. V.E. Wicks, Podiatrist. She
worked as receptionist, bookkeeper,
medical assistant and surgical assistant
for 42 years until her retirement in
1992.
She was married to William J. Jones on
Sept. 12, 1959. To this union was born
their only child, a daughter, Deneen
Branstad of Mason City. She married
Telford J. "Bud" Brackey in 1972.
Lorraine enjoyed spending time with her
family, reading her Bible and doing word
search puzzles. She also enjoyed playing
the piano, organ and singing Hymns.
She is survived by her twin sister, Lois
Epple of Grants Pass, Ore., her
daughter, Deneen Branstad and son-in-law
Darwin of Mason City; her grandson,
Justin T. Paulsen (Alyssa Porterfield)
and grandaughter, Katey L. Paulsen; one
great grandson, Joseph A. Branstad all
of Mason City. She is also several
special nieces and nephews.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her
parents: Fred and Hattie Meyer; her
brother, Richard Meyer of Riverside,
Calif. and her husband, Telford "Bud"
Brackey.
She was the very best Mother and
Grandmother anyone could have ever asked
for. She sacrificed many things for us.
We appreciate all the love and kindness
that she showed us throughout the years.
We stand and honor her and call her
Blessed. Thank you for everything you
have done. You will be truly missed and
we will all look forward to that day
when we will all be reunited together
again with our Heavenly Father. Until
that day comes, may you rest in Heavenly
peace.

James Florian Brandau

N.M. - James Florian Brandau, Lt.Cmdr.
USN Ret., died unexpectedly on Sunday,
July 22, 2012, in Taos, N.M.
He was born Feb.15, 1933, in the same
Iowa farmhouse his father was born in.
He graduated from Mason City High School
in 1950 and attended the University of
Iowa. He joined the Navy to see the
oceans and then took to the skies. He
flew everything from jets to helicopters
to hot air balloons. One thousand of his
flying hours were in Antarctica. He ran
the bulls in Pamplona, skied every
chance he got and at the age of 79,
passed away hiking Wheeler Peak, New
Mexico's highest mountain, in his
beloved Taos. If you knew him, you know
what a good, strange and exceptional man
he was. If you didn't know him, you
missed something great.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years,
Molly Grady; his daughter Peggie Brandau
of Taos, and daughters Maeve and Caitlin
Brandau of Albuquerque; sisters Beverly
Brandau of Timonium, Md.; Karen Trujillo
and brother-in-law Robert Trujillo of
Denver, Colo.; as well as many much
loved nieces, nephews, great nieces and
great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister
Marilyn Tubbesing and brother-in-law
Donald Tubbesing, both of Mason City.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial
will be held Aug. 4, at 4 p.m. at the
First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque,
N.M.

88 of 511 N. Van Buren Ave, Mason City,
died peacefully Friday morning, July 27,
2012, at her home.

1807 S. Kentucky Ave, Mason City.

Jean Irene was born on Oct. 23, 1923, in
Forest City, Iowa, the daughter of Neal
and Anna (Beckjordan) Brackey. She
attended school for her elementary
education in Forest City and when the
family moved to Mason City she attended
junior and senior high. During World War
,II she traveled the U.S. extensively
and finally moved to the West Coast and
worked in the shipyards; first as a
welder and then as a director of the
cranes.
She married Alfred Peasley on Feb. 26,
1946, in Mason City, where they raised
their son and three daughters. She was a
"stay-at-home" wife and mother who loved
to cook, bake and make sure all her
children knew the Lord Jesus Christ as
their Savior.
In 1961, the family moved to Juneau,
Alaska then to Tenstrike, Minn., then on
to Panorama City, Calif., for a brief
time before moving back to Mason City,
where she spent the rest of her life.
For a short time she worked at JC Penny,
and in 1971 and for the next ten years
she worked for Lifetime Manufacturing of
RV motor homes.
She met Don Carolus when he placed a bid
on doing the siding of her home and on
Feb. 16, 1980, they were united in
marriage in Casper, Wyo. They enjoyed
traveling, time with the family, eating
at their favorite restaurants.
Those thankful in sharing Jean's long
life include her son Jerry Peasley,
Mason City; Sheila and her husband Ron
Callow, Clear Lake; Sharon Peaslee and
her husband Michael Burns, Hines, Minn.;
Rozanna and her husband Mike Theisen,
Blackduck, Minn.; her sister JoAnn
Traenor, Mason City; her twin
brothers-in-law Merlin of Texas and
Merwin Carolus of Mason City,

Etherington, 80, Mason City, died
Monday, July 30, 2012, at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in
Mason City.
A celebration of Dick's life will be
held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at the
Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126
Third Street N.E., Mason City, with
Pastor Steve Johnson of the First
Covenant Church in Mason City
officiating. Visitation will be held one
hour prior to service time on Thursday
at the chapel.
According to his wishes, cremation has
taken place.
Richard Parsons Etherington was born in
Watertown, New York, the son of John and
Bernice Etherington, on August 16, 1931.
Dick worked for many years, as a
security guard in a maximum security
prison in Desert Center, Calif., and as
a security guard in a hospital in Joshua
Tree, Calif., until his retirement.
He was united in marriage to June Rose
Kroeze on Aug. 16, 2004, in Las Vegas,
Nev.
Dick enjoyed flying remote control
airplanes, stuff animals and toy cars.
Dick also loved to tell jokes and was
great at one liners.
Those left to cherish his memory are his
wife, June Etherington of Mason City;
children, Kim (Dave) Sullivan of Mason
City, Barb Couch of Yucca Valley,
Calif.; his step-children, Carla

Russell was born March 8, 1943, in New
Jersey the son of Russell C. and Mary
(Gatlin) Freese. He was with his family
as they traveled the world as his father
was career Army.
He came back to Iowa visit his
grandmother where he met and married his
wife Charlotte "Charlie" Hartkopp on
Nov. 15, 1968, at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church, Hampton. They lived in Aredale,
Iowa, where he trucked for Umthun
Trucking, Eagle Grove, and later SMX.
He enjoyed reading, was a history buff,
doing jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles
and building plastic models.
He was very proud of his safety driving
award he received for his 30 years
driving and had driven over four and
half million miles.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte
"Charlie" Freese, Mason City; three
children Rachel (Brad) Bryant, Mason
City, Christine (Mark) Pauly, Arlington,
Minn. and Joseph (Sara) Freese, Cedar

at Mercy Medical Center, Mason City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held
Thursday, Aug. 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy
Name Catholic Church, 507 First Avenue
N.W., Rockford. Officiating will be
Monsignor Brunken. Burial will follow
immediately after the service at the
Riverside Cemetery in Rockford with
military honors conducted by the Charles
City Ceremonial Unit.

Robert Eugene Gelner was born on Dec.
26, 1926, in Forest City, the son of
Victor and Agnes (Roach) Gelner. He
graduated from Forest City high School
in 1944 and in June 1944 enlisted in the
U.S. Navy. He was stationed aboard the
USS Rawlins in the Pacific during World
War II. Robert was with the Amphibious
Force when it landed in Okinawa on April
1, 1945. He was honorably discharged
from the Navy on June 8, 1946, as Yeoman
3rd Class after serving his two years of
active duty.
Robert enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in
May 1950 during the Korean War. He was
an Airman First Class, stationed in
England as a Personnel Specialist. He
was honorably discharged in September,
1953.
On Aug. 7, 1954, Robert was united in
marriage to Remelda Snopek at the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Manly. They
were engaged in farming until 1959.
Robert then worked as a Section Foreman
for the Rock Island Railroad. In 1964,
the family moved to Rudd, Iowa where
Robert was employed for over 30 years as
a Molder for Oliver/White Farm Equipment
in Charles City.
Robert was a member of Holy Name
Catholic Church in Rockford, and a
lifetime member of the VFW post No. 3914
of Charles City, Iowa. He enjoyed
picnics and playing cards with his
family, collecting Oliver Tractors,
working on his acreage and doing custom
garden tilling for many years.
Robert is survived by his wife Remelda
and four children: Randy (Lori) Gelner
of Apple Valley, Minn., Joni (Scott)
Gelner of Manly, Deanna (Bret) Mumm of
Adams, Minn., and Robert Jr. (Stephany)
Gelner of Checotah, Okla.; 12
grandchildren: Lucas, Kendra, John,
Mathew, Nathan, Nikki, Angelica, Cooper,
Brendan, Sarah, Jacob and Lydia; two
great-grandchildren: Chase and Peyton;
and brother Victor (Mavis) Gelner of
Colorado Springs, Colo.
Robert was preceded in death by his

Brian Michael Isch, son of Murray Isch
and Sue Hobbs Johnson was born Sept. 29,
1967, in Mason City. Brian attended
Mason City schools and received his GED.
Following his education Brian was
employed by Sedars, Jiffy Lube, Service
Master, and Clear Lake Chevrolet and
also worked throughout the construction
industry.
Brian was united in marriage to Sandy
Scheels in 1994 and later divorced.
Brian loved being in the outdoors,
especially when a rod and reel was in
his hands. He enjoyed taking family
trips to Northern Canada, Minn.,
Colorado, and even staying local, here
in Iowa. He was an avid John Wayne fan
and read many Westerns. Most
importantly, family and friends were
most important to him, helping anyone he
could.
Brian is survived by his parents, Murray
(Donna) Isch, Mason City and Sue
Johnson, Clear Lake, sister, Kristi
(Ron) Miles, Clear Lake; brothers, B.
Jay Johnson, Clear Lake and Jason Isch,

David was born January 5, 1945, in Sioux
Falls, S.D., the son of E.K. (Al) and
Irene (Muecke) Roberts. He graduated
from Charles City Community High School
in 1963 and continued his education at
Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.,
from 1963 to 1967.
He served in the U.S. Army during
Vietnam, and was honorably discharged in
1970.
David married Janet Doore on Nov. 6,
1971, and to this union two children
were born - Annette and David.
He owned Roberts Clothes of Charm for
over 30 years in Mason City.
David is survived by his wife of 40
years: Janet Roberts of Mason City; his
children: Annette Dawson and husband Don
of Indianola, and David K. Roberts III
of New York, N.Y.; his mother: Irene
Roberts of Mason City; grandchildren:
Don and Annie Dawson of Indianola;
sister: Susan Stilwell of Sioux Falls,
S.D.; sister-in-law: Joan Blocker and
husband Virgil of Dubuque; and
brother-in-law: Jim Doore and wife Mary
Lou of Toledo, Ohio. He is also survived
by many nieces and nephews.

CITY -Hermina M. Smith, 85, of Mason
City, passed away peacefully and joined
her husband John in heaven on Wednesday,

Hermina M. Smith was born Dec. 16, 1926,
in Thompson, the daughter of Charles and
Tillie (Johnson) Westendorf. She
attended schools in Thompson and Buffalo
Center.
She was married to John W. Smith and was
married for 62 years until his death.
She loved to travel with her husband and
together they traveled many of the fifty
states.
She loved spending time with her family
and friends, her beautiful smile and
wonderful sense of humor made her always
a pleasure to be around. She will be
deeply missed by all who knew and loved
her.
Hermina is survived by her son, Mark
Smith and wife Barbara of Olive Branch,
Miss.; grandchildren, Nathan Smith and
wife Lori, Ryan Smith, Jamie Marshall
and husband Steve, Cory Rubel and wife
Alicia and Andrea Smith;

CITY - LeRoy "Bud" Hugo, 85, of Mason
City passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2012,
at the Nora Springs Care Center
surrounded by his family.
A private funeral Mass will be held at
St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th St.
S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Neil J.
Manternach officiating. Full military
honors will be conducted by members of
the Mason City Veterans Memorial
Association.
A public visitation will be held from
5-7:30 p.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 2, at
Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126
3rd St. N.E., Mason City, where a
scriptural wake service will be held at
7:30 p.m. tonight.
Memorials will be used to purchase an
ice cream machine for the Nora Springs
Care Center (LeRoy's favorite treat).
LeRoy John Hugo was born on July 13,
1927, in Thompson, the second of eight
children born to Tjark and May (Walkner)
Hugo.
He attended school at Mason City and
went on to serve his country as an Army
medic in Brazil. After his tour of duty
he worked various jobs until he found
his niche as a brake operator and
troubleshooter for Curries. He worked
there for 30 years until retiring in
1993. LeRoy also worked carpentry jobs
with his brothers, John and Gunther.
LeRoy was united in marriage to Marcella
Toinbee in 1945. From their marriage
they had three daughters, Connie, Bette
and Pam. LeRoy shared 37 wonderful years
of marriage to Marcella until she passed
in 1977. He later married Margaret "Peg"
Beller, and their family grew to include
her children, Donna, Gene, Ginny and
Peggy.
In his free time he enjoyed playing
cards, bowling, golfing, and was beanbag
toss champion at Kentucky Ridge. Most of
all, LeRoy's passion was for his family
and grandchildren. He could always be
counted on for a helping hand and quick
wit.
He enjoyed spending time at his daughter
and son in-law's farm near Nora Springs.
Many of his birthdays and family
gatherings were held there. LeRoy also
helped in the fall harvest. He
especially loved driving the combine.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic
Church and the Fourth Degree Knights of
Columbus.
LeRoy will be greatly missed by his
wife, Peg; his daughters, Connie (Dean)
Davis, Bette Hugo and Pam (Jack) Hewitt;
his step-children, Donna Jean (David)
Adams, Eugene (Dawn) Beller, Virginia
(Stephen) Boone and Margaret (Timothy)
Owen; his brothers and sisters, Gladys
Richey, Tjark (Carita) Hugo, Mae Camper,

- Richard "Rick" Johnson, 65, of Garner
died Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City from pancreatic cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 3, at Faith Lutheran Church
in Miller with Rose Visser, lay pastor,
officiating. A reception will follow in
the church basement.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m.
Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel,
160 E. 4th St. in Garner, and will
continue one hour prior to services at
the church.
Richard "Rick" Knute Foster Johnson was
born on Oct. 15, 1946, in Belmond to Eva
Loraine Fosen Foster Johnson and Gordon
Russell Foster and was later adopted by
John Allen Johnson. He graduated from
Kanawha High School in 1964, Waldorf
College and attended State College of
Iowa. Rick married the love of his life,
Judith Rae Odland, on June 16, 1967, at
the Lake Lutheran Church in Renwick.
They made their home in Garner where
they raised their children. Rick worked
at Winnebago Industries for 39 years. He
enjoyed family vacations, working on his
home with his wife, planting his gardens
and was an avid collector of a variety
of things.
Rick is survived by his wife, Judy
Johnson, of Garner; his son-in-law,
Steve (Shelly) Mace of Garner; and their
four children, Cody Mace, Cassidy Mace,
Jordan Vossberg and her son, Kale
Pruessner, and Taylor Vossberg;
daughter, Cindy (Kevin) Hestad of
McDonald, Pa., and their two daughters,
Sophia and Emma; son, Chad Johnson of
Willow, Ark., and his sons, Chet and
Luke; son, Corey (Dena) Johnson of
Roland, Iowa, and their three children,
Seth, Claire and Lindsey; daughter,
Jessica (Craig) Roberts of McDonald,
Pa., and their four children, Clayton,
Connor, Madeline and Isabella; Rick's
mother, Eva Johnson of Kanawha; two
brothers, David (Jackie) Johnson of
Kanawha and Tim Johnson of Kanawha; and
a sister, Lisa Determan of Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his
daughter, Jody Renae Mace, along with
his fathers, Gordon Russell Foster, John
Allen Johnson; and his wife's parents,
Alma and Chet Odland.
Rick was a kind, affectionate, gracious,
strong gentleman that comforted others
with his awesome storytelling abilities.
He was always smiling and was
affectionately known by his loved ones
as Teddy Bear.

CITY - Earl C. Kvamsdale, 89, of Swea
City died Monday, July 30, 2012, at the
Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Monday, Aug. 6, at Immanuel Lutheran

Harrison Township Cemetery near Swea
City.

Earl Chandler Kvamsdale, the son of Ole
and Alma Rosalie (Moline) Kvamsdale, was
born July 1, 1923, on a farm northeast
of Swea City. He graduated from Swea
City High School in 1941 and helped his
father on the farm. On April 6, 1945, he
married Elsie Selberg at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua. Three weeks
later Earl enlisted in the U.S. Navy and
served his country during WW II in the
Pacific Theatre.
Following his honorable discharge he
returned home and farmed northeast of
Swea City until his retirement in 1993.
In 1994, Earl and Elsie moved into Swea
City.
In Earl's earlier years he enjoyed going
to car races, traveling, playing
basketball and being involved in
politics. In later years he enjoyed
reading, spending time with friends and
family and going to the Senior Center
for coffee.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran
Church and was active in the community,
serving on the town council and the
school board as a member and past
president. He also belonged to the Swea
City American Legion and VFW serving as
past commander, was a Bank Plus board
member and was a member of the Swea City
Senior Citizens.
Earl is survived by his four daughters,
Cheryl (David) Bartel of San Francisco,
Calif., Nancy (Marvin) Rayhons of
Garner, Janet (Kent) Knorr of Swea City
and Lori (Dale) Link of Blue Earth,
Minn.; six grandchildren, Bonnie (Brian)
Cataldo, Amy (Brian) Follmann, Nathan
Bartel, Michael (Jamie) Knorr, Jenny
(Michael) Vaske and Amanda Link (fiancé,
Jeremy Rutter); great-grandchildren,
Samuel, Ray and Reed Cataldo, Ethan,
Abby and Jack Follmann, Jace and Maxton
Knorr and Logan, and Izabella and Isaac
Vaske; a brother-in-law, Dr. Stanley
Lindblom; and a sister-in-law, LaVonne

Dave was born Jan. 6, 1959, in
Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Ernest
and Dorothy (Meyer) Nutting. He
graduated from Mason City High School in
1978. He went on to attend the Music
Business Institute in Atlanta, Ga. Dave
married Melanie Fuller March 24, 1984 in
Mason City. Dave worked for Potter Music
Company in Mason City and later owned
and operated Mason City Music. Following
the sale of the business, Dave attended
Hamilton Business College, which later
became Kaplan University. He would go on
to become an instructor at Kaplan,
teaching Business and Computer
Technology. He also owned and operated
Mason City Web, designing websites, and
provided lighting and sound for Stebens
Children's Theatre.
Dave was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church. Some of his interests included
travel, movies, reading, music and
technology. Dave was an inspiration to
his family and friends during his long
and courageous battle with cancer.
Dave is survived by his wife, Melanie,
of Mason City; children, Brianna, age
22, and her fiancé Alan Cooper, of
Plymouth, and Shae, age 15, at home;
Father and Mother in law, Donald and
Bernadine Fuller of Mason City;
step-mother, Yvonne Addis of Mason City;

City, died Thursday, July 26, 2012, at
his home in rural Forest City.

Loran D Aukes was born on July 27, 1936,
in Buffalo Center, to Reinder (RE) and
Anna (Onken) Aukes. He attended First
Congregational Church in Buffalo Center.
He grew up in rural Iowa and quit high
school to help his father farm.
Over the years, Loran was a successful
entrepreneur. He had a fertilizer plant,
a lawn spraying business and finally a
campground. He was extremely proud of
the last 20 years that he worked to
develop and grow what is known as Three
Fingers Campground. His campers became
great friends to him. He will always be
remembered as the "Park Ranger" who
drove many laps around the campground
grinning, waving and shaking his finger
at his campers!
In January of 1955, Loran was united in
marriage with Carol Egesdal.
They had four children, Craig (Marcia)
Aukes of Buffalo Center, Paula (David
Heyes) of Forest City, Pam (Joe
Akkermann) of Buffalo Center and Scott
(Jo Anne) Aukes of Ankeny, Iowa.
There are also eleven grandchildren and
seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his brothers Donald, Ervin, Robert and
Merle; his sisters Lily, Maxine and Ruby
and his grandson Cody.
Survivors include his sisters Mildred
Dontje of Forest City and Mary Khowassah

home many treasures through the years.

she watched all his movies. With her
love of many things western the family
tells all that jeans wear is appropriate
for both her visitation and service.

Andrew Palmer Johnson was born on the
farm in Mount Valley Township in rural
Winnebago County, Lake Mills, to John A.
and Josie (Gustafson) Johnson. He
attended country school and lived his
whole life within two miles of the farm
he was born on.
On June 27, 1948, he was united in
marriage to Ruth Kilen at the Salem
Lutheran Church in Lake Mills.
Andrew loved his family and was very
proud of his Norwegian Heritage. He
never complained and was known for
always trusting God for everything. He
was a lifelong member of Winnebago
Lutheran Church where he had held many
different offices over the years. He was
a DeKalb Dealer for 10 years. He enjoyed
camping and reading and was described by
his family as being "very intelligent
and self-taught."
He is survived by his loving wife of 64
years, Ruth of Lake Mills; five
children, Kathy Millett of Waterloo;
Jean (Dr. Steven) Burns of Sca City;
Mary Kruse of Mason City; Linda (Alan)
Wharton of Latimer; and Curtis Johnson

Melvo Anthony Majewski was born May 30,
1924, in Rural Greene, Butler Co., the
son of John Leo and Grace (Strong)
Majewski and died Wednesday, Aug. 1,
2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center
in Charles City. He received his
education in the Butler County country
schools and attended St. Mary's Academy
in Greene. On Jan. 21, 1950, Melvo was
united in marriage to Lorraine Kielman
at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene.
This union was blessed with five
children.
Melvo was a hard worker all of his life
starting out as a farm hand at the age
of 13. As an adult he went into farming
for himself and farmed in the Greene
area for 21 years. In 1970 he retired
from farming and was employed by McGee
Electric.
Melvo was a loving husband, father and
grandfather whose life centered around
his family. He had a good sense of humor
and loved to tell jokes.
He enjoyed repairing small appliances,
spent many hours grooming his lawn and
took great pride in his garden. He liked
polka music and had a special little
canine companion 'Princess'.
Living family members include: his

CITY - Cecil Peterson, 86, 212 S.
Tennessee Place, Mason City, died on
Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, a Heritage Care
Center.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday,
Aug. 7, at Grace Evangelical Free
Church, 440 N. Illinois Ave., Mason
City.
Cecil was born in Winnebago County on
Sept. 8, 1925, to Lewis and Ellen (Rierson)
Peterson. He attended country school in
Joice and served in the U.S. Navy from
1942 - 1946 during World War II.
Upon
his return he married Laura (Sandy)
Sanders in 1947. Taking up the brick
mason's trade, he became an excellent
brick mason and practiced his trade in
Mason City and California for over 50
years. Cecil enjoyed and was an
excellent bowler, winning many trophies
and tournaments. He was also a lifetime
member of the VFW and a former member of
the Elks. He particularly enjoyed the
many hours he spent playing cards and
talking to friends. Cecil and Sandy
retired to the desert near Palm Springs.
They spent much of that time traveling
with their fifth-wheel trailer
nationwide, then returning to Mason City
to live in 1993.
Survivors include his wife Sandy, a son
Ross, a daughter Marianne Ronan and
husband Ray, and three grandchildren,
Brett, Kayla, and Laura, brother Ronald
and wife Jane of Fort Dodge, sister Lois
Cooper and husband Harold of Manly,
sisters Ruth Latham of Mason City, Ruby
Kopps of Mason City, and many nieces,
nephews, and cousins with whom he spent
many enjoyable hours.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
a sister Marie Thompson and brothers
Harlan, Richard, and Gene Peterson and
James Skutter.

- Michael K. Thomas, 39, of Manly died
Tuesday, July 31, 2012, in Northwood.

Michael Kenneth Thomas, son of Walter J.
Thomas and Terri (Thomas) Sculley was
born April 11, 1973 in Jacksonville,
Fla. He lived in Italy for a couple of
years and attended and graduated from
Apple Valley High School with the Class
of 1991 in Apple Valley, Minn. Shortly
after high school, Mike moved to
Northwood and started working in
Fieldstone Cabinetry which changed names
to Wood Harbor in Mason City. Mike
worked there in customs and special
projects for 12 years before working for
Mason City Glass and continued his
working career at Cemstone Ready Mix.
Mike was united in marriage to Tesia
Bohl on Nov. 27, 2009, and to this union
one son was born: Draven Thomas.
Mike enjoyed playing his guitar, music,
the outdoors, camp fires, renaissance
festivals, anything to do with history
and loved learning new things. Most
importantly, Mike was a wonderful dad,
spending time with his son, step
children and his niece, Ashley. He also
was a wonderful friend to many.
He is survived by his wife, Tesia
Thomas; son, Draven Thomas;
step-children, Jennifer, Dominique,
Desiree, and Jayden; parents, Walter J.
Thomas and Terri (Tom) Sculley;
siblings, Rhiannon (Jared) Combs, Brent
(Jenna) Sculley; brother-in-law, Craig
Johnson; grandparents, Joan Strege,
Grace Thomas, Georgene Sculley, nieces
and nephews, Ashley, Donaven, and Liric
along with many aunts, uncles, and
cousins.
He was preceded in death by his sister,
Danielle Sculley-Johnson and his
grandparents, Walter E. Thomas and
Roland C. Strege.

City - Donald E. Mills, 77, of Papillon,
Neb., and formerly of Mason City, died
June 25, 2012, at the Josie Harper
Hospice House in Omaha, Neb.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30
a.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, at St. Joseph's
Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E.,
Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth B.
Gehling as Celebrant. Inurnment will

be conducted by members of the Mason
City Veterans Association.

Donald Everett Mills was born on April
13, 1935, in Decatur, Ill., the son of
Everett and Winifred (Aldrich) Mills. He
attended St. Joseph Catholic School.
Donald enlisted in the United States
Navy where he faithfully served his
country from April 5, 1952, until his
honorable discharge on May 14, 1956.
On October 13, 1956, Donald was united
in marriage to Judith Regan at St.
Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City.
They would be blessed with four
children: Molly, Mike, Mark, and Joe.
Don would later marry Rose Finneman. He
is survived by his close friend
Genevieve Anderson.
In his free time, Don enjoyed hunting,
fishing, drawing, woodworking and
woodcarving. He was a wonderful
storyteller and enjoyed telling tall
tales to his children and grandchildren.
Those grateful in sharing in Don's life
are his children, Molly (Bill) Dunn,
Manhattan, Kan., Mike Mills, Ackley,
Mark (Anna) Mills, Eight Mile, Ala., and
Joseph (Kim) Mills, Lenexa, Kan.; nine

Marlys Burkheimer
PAYSON,
Ariz. - Marlys Burkheimer, 75, of
Payson, Ariz., formerly of Boone, Iowa,
passed away at Villa Hospice, in Mesa,
Ariz., due to respiratory complications
on Saturday afternoon, June 30, 2012,
with a son by her side.
She was born on May 24, 1937, in Boone,
the daughter of Fred and Vivian (Willis)
Petty.
Marlys was a 1955 graduate of Boone High
School. She worked at the Iowa Physics
Lab at Iowa State University in Ames.
Marlys and her second husband, Ivan
Burkheimer, owned and operated many
businesses including the Fairview Motel
in Marshalltown, Red Rooster Grill in
Iowa Falls, and the Stein Inn Supper
Club in Mason City, Iowa.
She was also a graduate of Hamilton
Business College in Mason City, Iowa
where she worked at Iowa Rewind.
Marlys moved to Tempe, Ariz., where she
worked in the Admissions Office for
athletics at Arizona State University
before retiring temporarily to Boone,
later moving to Payson, Arizona, where
she lived for the past 12 years.
Marlys enjoyed watching the Arizona
Cardinals with her son, and kept up on
all Iowa college sports, as well as the
Phoenix Suns from her home in Payson.
She loved birds, her dog Oreo, as well
as talking to her many friends on the
phone. Her outgoing, lively, loquacious
personality will be missed by many.
Her parents; sister, Barbara Jean
Tesdall; and aunt, Betty Harrison,
preceded her in death.
Survivors include her three sons: Joseph
Sheehan of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kelly
Sheehan of Tempe, Ariz., and Kerry
Sheehan of Omaha, Neb.; a granddaughter,
Erin Sheehan; a brother, Fred Petty of
Auburn, Ala.; one niece; four nephews; a
sister-in-law, Ruth Buck of Montgomery,
Ala.; a brother-in-law, Eugene Tesdall
of Story City; first husband Joseph
Sheehan of Sun City, Ariz.; and her
second husband Ivan Burkheimer of Mason
City.
Following her wishes, the body has been
cremated.
Graveside services and interment were
held on Saturday morning, July 28, at 11
a.m. at the Linwood Park Cemetery in
Boone, Iowa, with the Rev. Sara Duffel
officiating.

Murlette Serena (Lovick) Hagen was born
on March 1, 1915, in Mount Valley
Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, to
parents Henry and Ida (Hanson) Lovick.
She attended Rusley country schools, and
worked for many neighboring farm family
households.
In December of 1935, Murlette was united
in marriage with Gilman Richard Hagen in
Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile. The
couple made their home in rural Lake
Mills, where Gilman farmed and Murlette
was a homemaker. She later worked at the
Lake Mills Care Center in housekeeping
for almost 20 years. She was a kind
person who never had a bad word to say
about anyone.
Murlette became a resident of the Lake
Mills Care Center in 2009.
Survivors include her children, Gordon
and Jean Hagen of Lake Mills, and Linda
Hagen of Albuquerque, N.M.;
daughter-in-law, LeAnn Hagen of Lake
Mills; grandchildren, James Hagen, Jeff
and Mary Beth Hagen, Rodney and Samantha
Hagen, Angie and Doug Bacon, and Sara
and Warren Brackey; great-grandchildren,
Staci, Andrew, Eric and Ashley Hagen;
Kendall and Cameron Hagen; Natalie,
Clint, Clay and Sydney Hagen; Jacob,
Jordynn, and Josie Brackey; Mitchell
Storby, and Caleb and Logan Bacon; and
one great-great-grandson, Mitchell
Hagen. She is also survived by two
brothers, James and Alvera Lovick of
Fertile, and Leo and Marlys Lovick of
Ackley; three sisters, Elaine and Bob
Ollenberg of Garner, Alice Toresdahl of
Clear Lake, and Doris Bonstetter of
North Carolina; three sisters-in-law,
Anita Lovick of Washington, Iowa, Diane
Lovick of Forest City, and Thelma
Swanson of Lake Mills; as well as many
nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, Henry and Ida Lovick; husband,
Gilman Hagen; son, Gary Hagen; grandson,
Steven Hagen; three sisters, Amy Brakke,
Irene Brakke, and Pearl Hanna; three
brothers, Paul Lovick, Ardie Lovick, and
Larry Lovick; and in-laws, Gladys Lovick,

CITY - Frank C. LeDoux, Jr., 77, of
Mason City, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012,
at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City,
surrounded by his family.

a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at
Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126
Third St. N.E., Mason City, with Pastor
Denny Ganz officiating. Visitation will

Frank Clement LeDoux, Jr., was born on
March 29, 1935, in Providence, R.I., the
son of Frank C. LeDoux, Sr., and Anne V.
(Laven) LeDoux. He attended and
graduated from Pawtucket High School
before serving in the United States
Army. Following his honorable discharge,
Frank attended and graduated from the
Ringling Brothers College of Art and
Design in Florida.
On Feb. 11, 1961, Frank was united in
marriage to Diane K. Kane in
Williamsburg, Va. Together they would be
blessed with two sons, Frank LeDoux,
III, and Robert LeDoux.
He began his career working for the CIA
as a makeup artist and illustrator for
two years before transferring to the
Corps of Engineers where he also served
as an illustrator. In his spare time,
Frank also did signage work and would
eventually pass that trade on to his
son, Robert. Throughout the years, Frank
would often times assist his son Robert
with his work at LeDoux Signs in Mason
City.
In his free time, Frank enjoyed pen and
ink drawing and photography; he was a
gifted artist. He also liked riding his
bicycle throughout Mason City, swimming,
making homemade ice cream, and gazing
through his telescope.
Those grateful in sharing in his life
are his two sons, Frank C. LeDoux, III,
and Robert K. (Lorraine) LeDoux; his
grandchildren, Bobby (Ashley) LeDoux,
Joseph LeDoux, Christine LeDoux, Ashley
LeDoux, Nicole LeDoux, Patrick LeDoux,
and Megan LeDoux; his step-
grandchildren, Monica Bessman and Jesse
(Megan) Zech; and his
great-grandchildren, Parker LeDoux,

BREEZE, Fla. - Paul E.Pettigrew, age 64,
of Gulf Breeze, Fla., sailed away to
God's loving arms Aug. 1, 2012, six days
prior to his 65th birthday.
Celebration service of Paul's life will
be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at
Island Cove Marina in Pensacola, Fla.
Paul was an amazing and passionate man
who retired as a USN Chief, dedicated to
his country and his family. Paul pursued
a second career through PJC with a
Culinary Arts Degree with Presidential
Honors. He recently retired as executive
chef at Tiger Point Country Club to
further pursue his truest love of
sailing and enjoying his life with his
wife, family and Yoda.
Paul is survived by his wife of 41
years, Jan Allen Pettigrew; his son,
Sean Pettigrew (wife Rachel); grandson
Andrew Pettigrew; sister Juanita (Jim)
Laskowski; aunt Elizabeth (Gordon) Lund.
Family by marriage: Jess Allen, Jim
(Judy) Allen, Jackie Allen, Jaylene

Paul was preceded in death by his

Robert "Bob" Seefeld

LAKE - Robert "Bob" Seefeld, 73, of 2213
14th Place North in Clear Lake, formerly
Wesley, passed away Friday, Aug. 3,
2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a
courageous 14-month battle with cancer.
Funeral services for Bob will be held at
10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Zion
Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., in
Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean C. Hess
officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen
Cemetery in Wesley at 1:30 p.m.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.
on Monday, Aug. 6, at Ewing Funeral
Chapel, 178 Center St. West, in Britt,
and continue one hour prior to the
service at the church.
Robert "Bob" Wayne Seefeld, the son of
Clarence and Anna (Weiland) Seefeld, was
born on April 29, 1939, and raised in
the Wesley area. He graduated from
Titonka High School in 1956.
In February of 1960, Bob was married to
Barbara Ringsdorf. This union was
blessed with a son, Bret. The couple
later divorced.
Bob farmed most of his life on the
family farm in rural Wesley. He retired
from farming in 2000 in order to put
more effort into his hobbies of cars,
bike riding and boating.
Bob did not stop working all together
because he continued his window tint
business.
Bob loved going to Buddy Holly concerts.
Through the concerts and his other
hobbies, he was able to make and retain
many friends from across the country and
the world.
Bob is survived by Marilynn Darg-Anderson
of Clear Lake; son Bret (Sandy) Seefeld
of Oro Valley, Ariz.; along with many
cousins and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
two brothers, Raymond and Roland; and
his sister, Darlene Ricklefs.
