Arlan Eugene Anderson

KANAWHA - Arlan Eugene Anderson, 75, of Kanawha, passed away from complications due to stroke on Thursday evening, April 12, 2012, at the Muse-Norris Inpatient Unit at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City surrounded by his family.

In keeping with Arlan's wishes, there will be no funeral and his body has been cremated.

His family will be receiving family and friends at a Celebration of Life luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Arlie's birthday, Monday, today, April 16, at Kanawha Lutheran Church.

Arlan was born on April 16, 1936, to Ardo "Buzzy" and Frances (Severson) Anderson in Kanawha. Arlan, a life-long resident of Kanawha, was educated in the Kanawha schools, graduating from high school in 1954.

He married his best friend Sharon Mickelson, on Feb. 18, 1968, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. They made their home in Arlie's childhood home where they raised their three children. There weren't many activities Sharon and Arlie didn't do together. They were constant companions to each other.

After high school, Arlie joined his father in the corn shelling business. After Buzzy's retirement, Arlie and his brother Larry purchased the business that would become known as Anderson Brothers Trucking and Shelling. Later, the two would farm together until Arlie's retirement in 1999.

After his retirement from farming, Arlie remained very active restoring antique vehicles and worked up until the day he had his stroke.

A man of faith, Arlie was a baptized and confirmed member of Kanawha Lutheran Church where he served in many different positions on the church council and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He was very active in the community, as well. He participated in league bowling for many years. He served on the Farmer's Elevator/North Central Co-op board for many years and also on the Kanawha Community Home board.

Arlie helped to bring back the Show in the Shade car show held on Labor Day in Kanawha.

Many people knew Arlie as a respected farmer, businessman and friend.

There wasn't much Arlie couldn't do. He was an accomplished farmer, carpenter, and mechanic and was very skilled in car restoration. Anything he set his mind to, he could accomplish.

Arlie had many interests and hobbies. For many years, he excelled at showing quarter horses at horse shows all throughout north Iowa. He and Sharon enjoyed country dancing with their friends and they even appeared on TNN's "Wildhorse Café" with their dance club, Doc's Dancers.

Out of all of his interests, he had a true passion for car restoration. He was especially proud of his achievements in restoring, with assistance from his son Jon, his 1964 Pontiac Bonneville convertible, his 1964 Pontiac Bonneville hardtop and his black beauty and the pride of his fleet, the 1955 Pontiac Star Chief. He enjoyed taking his cars to car shows, where he found much success and proudly came home with many trophies. He could talk endlessly about cars and was as interested in other people's projects as much as his own.

In addition to his wife Sharon, Arlan is survived by daughter, Lori Ratzke and husband Rick of Dows, son Andrew Anderson and wife Amy of Reinbeck, and son Jonathan Anderson of Reinbeck; grandchildren, Jacob, Taylor and Ethan Ratzke, Zachary Anderson and Cassie Kabrick; two great-grandchildren, Tatum Kabrick and Aliyah Anderson; his sisters, Lucille Osby of Kanawha, Barbara (Bob) Hegg of Windsor, Colo.; his brothers, Dean (Daphne) Anderson of Huxley and Larry (Darlene) Anderson of Kanawha and several nieces and nephews.

Arlan was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa.

Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in O'Larry's name may wish to consider the Belmond Ambulance, Belmond-Klemme Schools Scholarship Foundation I or Scholarship Founda-tion II, Belmond Medical Center or the donor's choice.

O' Larry Carroll Dorr was born Jan. 1, 1928, to Albert and Nellie (Fulton) Dorr in Belmond. In high school Larry excelled in numerous sports including having the only individual triple play on record in Belmond baseball history. O' Larry was the first of all of his siblings to graduate from Belmond High School. Following high school Larry joined the National Guard where he spent 18 years with them as a chef. He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Wedekin. To this union seven children were born.

On Sept. 26, 1981, O' Larry and Doris Kickbush were united in marriage. Through this marriage they were blessed with 30 years of love and happiness. Larry worked hard all of his life in the construction industry. Larry later inherited the company from his father and owned and operated Dorr Construction for many years. Larry was a hard worker and had a vast knowledge of construction profession.

His carpentry skills were impeccable. On occasion Larry was bull-headed when it came to business at times and thought his way was the only way to perform the task at hand.

Larry was very particular not only of his work but his tools. He always knew where every hammer or every shovel was located and was determined to keep them in mint condition for years to follow. Even into his retirement years Larry never quit doing small carpentry tasks and continued to stay busy as he was often times seen tooling around town in his brown van checking up on various projects.

Larry was a man known for being involved in all aspects of the community. He was involved heavily in the Belmond Jaycees and was a longtime
firefighter on the Belmond Volunteer Fire Department. He assisted in the community's Fourth of July activities. He was one of the founding individuals of the of the Belmond Country Club and offered much knowledge and expertise in its development.

Those who got to know Larry on a personal level enjoyed his keen sense of wit and all of his Larry quotes; he had a mannerism for all occasions almost as if he spoke another language. Larry enjoyed dancing to ballroom music, waltzes and polkas where he would dance till he could no longer stand. He enjoyed going on excursions with his family. At a young age he would take the children on a fishing trip when they turned the age of 10. O'Larry was known for his famous fish calling skills of "Here fishy, fishy," as he slapped the water with the pole. And low and behold he would catch a fish. His passion of outdoors was also shared with his family through hunting wild game along with long road trips to downhill skiing in the van.

Larry loved to spend time with his family. This was shown in his countless years of the Dorr family reunion spent with loved ones telling stories and having fun. He always enjoyed making a child happy and his sense of humor was enormous. He always found time after a hard day of work to spend time with his children or grandchildren to relax and play games. His warm heart influenced all who got the pleasure of meeting him, complimenting those who crossed his path along with being a positive influence on everyone he met. Larry loved his family and cared deeply for them.

His love and memories will continue on in the life of his family and friends; wife, Doris Dorr; daughters, Lorann and Daniel Lonnevik; Sharri and Barry Kankel; sons, Patrick and Robin Dorr; Michael and Michelle Dorr; Terry Dorr; daughter Cynthia Wakeman and friend Rich Runnells; stepdaughters Susan and Rod Toftey, Sharon and Keith Barkema; Son Tom and Teresa Tegland; daughter-in-law Tracy; grandchildren; Skylar Dorr, Nicholas Dorr, Kassidy Dorr, Eric Lonnevik, Elisa (Lonnevik) Wood, Ryan Dorr, Alex Dorr, George Wakeman IV, Charles Wakeman, Henry Wakeman, William Wakeman, Colton Dorr, Kaitlyn Dorr, Laura Burk, Timothy Tegland, Derek Barkema, Tina Stegen, Tammy Eivins, Tiffany Goodpastor, Travis Tegland; great-grandchildren, Cole and Brooke-lynn Lonnevik, Lane and Drew Nelson, Gage Dorr Hunter Stegen Skylar, Riley, Zane Goodpastor, Kyle and Drew Burk, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

O'Larry is preceded in death with his parents Albert and Nellie Dorr; son Timothy Dorr; and three sisters and seven brothers.
