Service for Elda Mae Ryan will be at 1:30 p.m. today, Saturday, April 21, at Parkside First Baptist Church with Pastor Rob Carlton and other pastors officiating.

The family received family and friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday in Lunning Chapel.
She was born in Burlington, on July 13, 1929, to Henry and Edith (Hendrickson) Keller at home.

She was a Burlington High School graduate in 1947. She attended Greenville College for two years. She sang in the college choir spring tours over the Midwest. She served as the choir's piano accompanist and for several men's quartets. She served as president of the Free Methodist youth group in Burlington for many years. She was active in Youth for Christ ministries in the 1950s.

She married E. Wayne Ryan on September 11, 1955, at the Burlington, Iowa Free Methodist Church. The Ryans have one daughter who is Mrs. Karen (David) Sykes of Cedar Rapids. Their son is Mr. Kevin (Janet) Ryan of Marion. The Ryans have five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Their four granddaughters who live in their own homes are Tonya, Veronica, Victoria, and Lynnde. Their one grandson, Nicholas Ryan, in grade school lives at home. Elda has prayed daily to ask God to draw family members and their spouses to trust Jesus Christ as their savior and lord.

Elda worked in the Jackson City Bank to support the Rev. Ryan as he earned his A.A. degree from Spring Arbor Junior College in Spring Arbor, Michigan. The college in southern Michigan is now Spring Arbor University. She worked in the college admissions office at Robert Wesleyan College outside Rochester, New York, where her husband earned his B.A. degree in 1959. Elda supported her husband, son and daughter first by factory work as he continued his ministerial studies at Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. Asbury Seminary is twenty miles outside Lexington, Kentucky. Her husband earned his Master's of Divinity degree at Asbury in 1962. She was hired as an assistant to the dean of nursing at the University of Kentucky. She helped chose the first nursing school bibliography for the college of nursing students.

The Ryans have served as Free Methodist pastor and wife in six Iowa communities since July 1962. The Rev. Ryan was appointed by Free Methodist bishops to pastor Iowa congregations in Columbus Community, Fairfield, Cedar Rapids, Knoxville, Mason City, and Burlington. Eldas and Pastor Ryan had a continuous pastoral ministry in these six Iowa communities totaling forty-eight years. Pastor Ryan's last retirement was in June 2010. Mrs. Ryan volunteered her services in all six of their congregations. She served continuously in their congregations as the church pianist or organist. She also served as treasurer, Sunday school teacher, mid-week children's program leader, women's missions' director, and church prayer coordinator in various congregations. She was always the Rev. Ryan's congregational secretary.

Elda struggled since February 1998 with breast cancer when she had a mastectomy. Over fourteen years she experienced numerous surgeries, radiation treatments, chemo therapy infusions, medications, and blood transfusions, along with numerous hospitalizations. She faced her medical procedures with a positive attitude of hope and appreciation to God and for caregivers. She daily expressed her love and appreciation for Wayne and family members.

Elda read the Bible through every year in various translations. She enjoyed reading Christian books, especially those by Max Lucado. She enjoyed the word search books. She became the friend of many women from over Iowa. She shared her faith and counseled with scores of women in the community and in her own congregations.

Daily she enjoyed praying to her God and Savior. She always expressed her love and thanksgiving to God for her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. She assisted many families with gifts, home cooked meals, and with her words of encouragement through her ministry of sending hundreds of birthday, anniversary, and sympathy cards over the years.

Elda helped write the Ryan's monthly prayer Letter which they mailed to about a dozen family members and friends over the United States during their nine years of ministry at the Burlington, Free Methodist Church.

Elda and the Rev. Ryan have enjoyed several overseas trips with the Rev. Ryan's three brothers and two sisters and their spouses. The Ryans have traveled with the "Ryan clan" to Israel, Greece, and Ireland. They sailed to several Caribbean island countries during an eleven-day cruise in 1998. These trips were sponsored by Pastor Ryan's brother Ronald.

Pastor Ryan's ninety-six-year-old Aunt Ruby Stevens of Austin, Texas, has financially helped the Ryans and the Burlington congregation the past nine years. Mrs. Stevens and her first husband served as godparents to the seven Ryan children providing many gifts at Christmas time. Ruby Stevens is the sister of Pastor Ryan's mother, Mildred Ryan.

Lois L. Hockenson

Plymouth - Lois L. Hockenson, 87, of Plymouth, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 23, at the United Methodist Church, 508 Carter St., Plymouth, with Pastor Wendy Johannesen officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

As many of Lois' friends and family know, she had a love of dress hats. It is with this love that Lois' family encourages those attending her service to wear a hat in Lois' memory.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, April 22, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and will continue one hour prior to Lois' service at the church.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Lois' name to the Plymouth United Methodist Church, or the Plymouth Fire and Rescue Department in which two of Lois' grandsons proudly serve.

Lois Louise Moon was born on Feb. 24, 1925, in Rowan, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Grace (Winter) Moon Sr. She was one of six children. Lois spent much of her younger years in Mason City and attended Mason City High School.

On March 9, 1942, Lois was united in marriage to Harry Hockenson at the Radio Chapel in Mason City. They were blessed with six children and 70 years, having just renewed their wedding vows in a surprise ceremony at the KIMT News studio, which formerly housed the Radio Chapel, earlier this year.

From August of 1967 until May of 1982, Lois enjoyed being a cook at the Plymouth school, a job that she truly loved. Often she would come into the school early just to prepare her famous cinnamon rolls for her students, even though she wasn't expected to. She loved and treated her school children as her own and enjoyed treating them to an extra helping of food to let them know how special they were to her.

Lois enjoyed many things in life, from raising her children to her nieces and nephews to her grandchildren. In her family's younger years she was a devoted supporter of her children's athletic ventures. Regardless of the sport Lois was in the stands lending her support, rain or shine.

She enjoyed gardening, camping, sewing and spending time with her family and friends, especially "Birthday Club" on Saturday morning, Senior Citizens on Monday afternoon, not to forget Sunday morning church!

Lois was known for her skills as a master chef and will be fondly remembered for her fried chicken, fried potatoes and homemade bread. She had a love for hats and kept an extensive collection, wearing them any chance she had! As an avid Minnesota Twins fan, Lois had the honor of attending the first game at the newly built Target Field in Minneapolis.

Always known as the "fixer," Lois fixed relationships, family meals and odds and ends throughout the house. She was a pleaser and wanted nothing in return besides "the love" of her family and friends.

As a proud Democrat, one of Lois' proudest moments was being able to meet and shake hands with President Obama when he stopped at NIACC during his presidential campaign. Lois arrived at NIACC six hours early to insure her opportunity to shake his hand!

Those grateful in sharing in Lois' life are her husband, Harry, Plymouth; her children, Harry Hockenson Jr., Plymouth, Gene (Jane Papouchis) Hockenson, Plymouth, Becky (David) Hoff, Aurora, Ill., Vickey Kobliska, Alta Vista, Tod (Teri) Hockenson, Chariton, Lexie Knutson, Plymouth, and her "adoptive" daughters, Linda (John) Moore, Plymouth, Debbie (George) Perry, Plymouth, and Diana Anderson, Plymouth; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Elizabeth) Moon, Seattle, Wash.; her sisters-in-law, Eve Cocca Moon, Pearl Wagner and Marge Moon; and her beloved dog, Ozzie.

Lois is preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Clarence Kobliska; her grandson, Darron Kobliska; her great-grandson, Tyler Hoff; and her siblings, Ted Moon, Charles Moon Jr., Lou Hedrick and Lillian Evanson.

Rod was born Jan. 29, 1965, in Fort Dodge to Maynard and Darlene Skadburg. They moved to Mason City in 1978. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1983 and attended college at the University of Northern Iowa. He was married to Laurie Peterson in 1984 and their son Shawn Edward was born November 25, 1988.

Rod worked at River City Communications as a security and fire system installer and through that work, he met his second wife, Michelle. They married June 23, 2000, and he proudly took on the role of stepfather to Michael, Katie and Jacob, and adopted Michael in 2001.

Rod was a devoted father, loving husband and a brand new grandfather to Landon Michael, born in December 2011. He was a true and loyal kind of guy - always there for you and always willing to help. You could always count on him to be honest and tell it like it is, but you can also count on his sarcasm and wit to come shining through. He was the guy who brought the laughs to the party and was full of stories.
Rod endured many years of illness with a determination and positive attitude that we all can admire and learn from. After a kidney transplant in 2008, he gave his life to Christ and learned to trust and believe in God's plan for him. His life was a testimony to God's love for us as he was brought through many situations and health scares by nothing other than God's will and intervention. As his body grew tired of fighting, God took him home. You can bet if there are golf courses and white sandy beaches in heaven - that is where he is today.

Rod was surrounded by faithful friends and family of which he was extremely honored to have in his life and he will always be remembered in our hearts.

Left to remember him are his wife, Michelle Skadburg; his children, Shawn Skadburg of Cedar Falls; Katie Lee of Clear Lake and Jacob Lee of Mason City; Grandchild, Landon Michael Simmer of Clear Lake; mother, Darlene Skadburg of Mason City; sister, Deb Francis of Mason City; brother, Jerry (Marla) Skadburg of Sioux City; nephew, Jess (Nikki) Skadburg of Minneapolis, Minn.; Michelle's grandmother, Jean Stone of Mason City; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his father, Maynard Skadburg; son, Michael Skadburg and mother-in-law, Barb Haffner.

Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, Iowa 50401, 641-423-0924,
