Rutherford B. (Rudy) Monson
U.S. Marine Corps WWII

FOREST CITY - Rutherford B. (Rudy) Monson, 85, died Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at his home in rural Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and will continue an hour prior to service at the church.

Rutherford B. (Rudy) Monson was born on a farm in Mt. Valley Township, near Forest City on Nov. 17, 1925, the son of Nick and Etta (Olson) Monson. He was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills. He received his elementary education in rural schools near his home and he graduated from Forest City High School in 1943.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, entering the service on March 23, 1944, and fighting in the South Pacific with the Marine Corps "Scouts and Snipers." After his discharge from the service he returned to the Forest City area. On Dec. 28, 1947, he was united in marriage to Doris Myre at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and the couple made their home on the family farm east of Forest City.

Rudy was a lover of life. After a lifetime of farming he enjoyed spending time attending parades, local threshing shows, buying, fixing up and collecting antique John Deere tractors and classic cars and watching old John Wayne movies.

Rudy knew and would tell you about the genealogy of everyone in the county, even going back as far as 100 plus years!

He loved driving around the countryside sharing stories and checking everyone's crops. Once you got in Dad's car, you weren't sure just how long the ride would last.
Jane's Care in Fertile was a favorite gathering spot for dad and all his buddies as they daily kept one another abreast of all the local "happenings." Central to Rudy's life was spending time with his family. He was never happier than when surrounded by all this immediate and extended family.

Rudy is survived by his children: Craig (Teresa) Monson of Forest City; Ardella (Dale) Johnson of Edina, Minn.; Murray (Donna) Monson of Boone, Iowa; and Dr. Mark Monson of Mora, Minn.

Also surviving are 15 grandchildren: Brian and Shawn Monson; Colby, Cohen and Callen Monson; David, Vicki, Jeffrey, Brian, Bradley and Gregory Johnson; Dr. Nathan Monson and Lucas Monson and Elizabeth and Joshua Monson: four great-grandchildren, Logan Monson, Drew Monson, Lucas Renneke and Maia Johnson; and a sister, Evelyn Budlong of Mason City.

Rudy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris, son Norman, brother Merle Monson, sisters Ora Syckes, Margie Olson, Sally DeBaker and Gertie Smith, and a nephew, Greg Syckes.

Maynard Iverson

LAKE MILLS - Maynard Axel Teroy Iverson, 92, Clive and formerly of Lake Mills, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 24, 2010) at Iowa Methodist Medical Center with his daughter at his side.

His funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Burial will take place at North Prairie Cemetery in rural Lake Mills.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 26, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St., Lake Mills, and again one hour prior to the service at the church.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Maynard was born April 18, 1918, in rural Worth County to George and Julia (Aasland) Iverson. He was the youngest of four children. Maynard was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice and confirmed at Elk Creek Lutheran Church in rural Worth County. He attended rural schools in Worth and Cerro Gordo counties.

Maynard worked on various farms in northern Iowa and South Dakota before purchasing his farm west of Lake Mills in 1944. He enjoyed every aspect of farming and caring for his animals.

On Feb. 4, 1956, Maynard was united in marriage with Sylvia Gudmonson at North Prairie Lutheran Church, where they were members until the church closed in 2004. They raised their two daughters, Kay and Marsha, on the family farm. Without a doubt, the joy of Maynard's life was his three "sweethearts."

He was involved in church activities, including the cemetery committee.

In 2000, Maynard and Sylvia moved off the farm, Maynard into the Mills Harbour in Lake Mills and Sylvia into the Lake Mills Care Center. He enjoyed this new community of friends. After Sylvia's passing in 2002 and free from the obligations of farming, he enjoyed "loafing" uptown. He would travel to area towns and visit with local farmers over a cup of coffee. In 2004, he was warmly welcomed to his new church home, Salem Lutheran.

In February 2008, he moved to the Des Moines area to be closer to his daughter, Marsha, and her family. At the time of his death, he was living at Walnut Ridge Assisted Living Facility in Clive.

He enjoyed outings with Marsha and attending St. John's Lutheran Church as a family on Sundays. He found great pleasure in watching the grandkids grow and the energy they brought to life. Annual trips to the Iowa State Fair were a favorite activity.
Maynard was known for his friendly nature, sharing conversations with a friend or stranger. He enjoyed storytelling, predicting the weather, watching the moon and showing people his "chicken glasses."

Maynard is survived by his daughter, Marsha (Blair) Hansen, Clive; grandchildren, Thomas and Rachel; brother-in-law, Vernon (Betty) Gudmonson, Lake Mills; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter Kay in 2000; siblings, Lester (Olga) Iverson, Norma (Cecil) Carr and Jermit (Ann) Iverson; and brother-in-law, Marlin (Ethel) Gudmonson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the North Prairie Cemetery Corp.
