Edna spoke Norwegian at home and learned English in public school. The close Norwegian community was an important part of her life. She was a founding member of the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married.

She had many friends that she valued deeply, including those from Grace Baptist (Mason City) and Bethel (Joice) Churches, her Bible study groups and her home business.

Linda Kay Apel was born on April 7, 1947, in Charles City, the daughter of Kenneth and Lorraine Ferch Hovey. She graduated with the Class of 1966 from Charles City High School.

Linda always was there to help other people in need and was certainly there for her family whether they thought they needed it or not. She was generous to a fault, helpful and best of all good hearted in everything she did.

When she had time over the years, she and Ron liked to skate, snowmobile and get away with the kids to go camping.

Linda also held several work positions over the years, starting with Spurgeons Department store, working in the deli and handing out samples at Hy-Vee, and on and off with Charles City Transit as dispatch along with working with hundreds of families at all the locations of Fullerton Funeral Homes.

Those who shared Linda's closest life include her husband of 44 years, Ron; her mother, Lorraine (Ferch) Eckenrod, Charles City; her step-mother, Kathy Hovey, Charles City; her three children Lisa Apel, Steve Apel and Aranda Cowell, all of Charles City; and Chad and his wife Shannon Apel, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; five grandchildren, Jordan Apel and Megan Taylor, Charles City; Brett Cagley and Leanne Douglas, New Hampton; Caedyn Apel of Charles City; and Logan and Levi Apel, Blooming Prairie; one great-granddaughter, Braelyn Cagley; six sisters, Deb (Kirk) Bailey, Jean (Jerry) Wiltse, Nancy Eckenrod, all of Charles City; Karla (Jeff) Klein, Prior Lake, Minn.; Lori Westendorf and Pam Cook both of Charles City; six brothers, Keith (Cindy) Eckenrod, Tom (Lori) Eckenrod, all of Charles City; Mike Eckenrod, Grand Junction, Colo.; Bill (Jill) Eckenrod, Waverly; Tim (Deb) Hovey and Dan Hovey, both of Charles City; and a whole host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Cecil Steffensen

BUFFALO CENTER - Cecil Steffensen, 87, of Buffalo Center died Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

His memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with the Rev. Bill Peake officiating.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center.

Cecil Clair (Squeak) Steffensen, son of Arthur and Zilpha (Oleson) Steffensen, was born March 24, 1923, on the Tin Farm, Miller, Hancock County, Iowa, where all the farm buildings were covered in tin. Cecil, the second of 10 siblings, died Nov. 8, 2010, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Arthur and Zilpha Steffensen and family moved to the Steffensen Homestead from the Tin Farm, northwest of Forest City, in 1923-1924. The Steffensen Homestead had been in the Steffensen name since 1900; previously owned by Christian Steffensen and then owned by Arthur's father, Ludvig Steffensen.

A train and creek ran through the property. While growing up on the Steffensen Homestead, they had milk cows, hogs, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, workhorses and a Shetland pony on the farm.

The Steffensen family moved to another farm near Joice in 1936, the Doden Farm in 1942, Rich Farm near Thompson in March 1947 and then the Murray farm by Buffalo Center in late 1947.

Cecil helped his father, Arthur, on the farm as well as helping 12-14 different farms in the Forest City, Joice and Buffalo Center areas thrashing, corn shelling and cutting silage from 1942 to 1947. Cecil completed first through seventh grade at Landrau School No. 5 and eighth grade at Joice High School, Joice.

Cecil married Ruth Alice Edwards in May of 1946 and lived with his parents, Arthur and Zilpha Steffensen, on the Doden Farm in a little two-room house with their first son, Harlan.

During March of 1947, wife Ruth, son Harlan and Cecil moved to the Britt Farm, west of Thompson. Cecil started farming with a WC Alice Chalmers steel-wheeled tractor that was bought from Harry Honken. The steel wheels were changed to rubber tires later. There was no electricity or pump on the Britt Farm, just a windmill.

Cecil started farming with cattle, chickens and hogs on his first farm. The corn rows were 40 inches and were cultivated down the rows and crossways to control weeds.

Before Christmas 1947, Cecil and family moved to the Rich Farm, southwest of the Britt Farm, after his parents, Arthur and Zilpha Steffensen, moved from the Rich Farm to the Murray Farm near Buffalo Center. On the Rich Farm, Cecil milked 21 cows, had hogs, sheep and chickens, and grew corn, soybeans, hay and oats in the early years of farming. Later, Cecil just had hogs and fed beef cattle while growing only corn and soybeans.

Cecil started farming with a WC Alice Chalmers tractor and equipment, went to a WD Alice Chalmers, then to International Harvester tractors and equipment and then to John Deere tractors and equipment.

His first car was a 1932 green two-door Chevrolet car. Cecil moved to Buffalo Center in 1982 and stopped farming in 1984 after 47 years. He helped manage Buffalo Seed Center from 1992-2006.

Cecil was a member of the Farm Bureau. He was also a member and former board member of the Congregational Church and member of the Reformed Church.

Left to cherish Cecil's memory are his surviving six children: Denny (Beverly) Steffensen of Forest City; Wayne K Steffensen of Woden; Neil (Rox) Steffensen of Thompson; Darwin Steffensen of Racine, Wis.; Gail Steffensen of East Chain, Minn.; and Janet (John) Lyman of North St. Paul, Minn.

Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, Larry, Jerry, Chad, Tony, Corey, Joshua, Jeremy, Brendan, Sean, Zach, Ryan, Rebeccah, Elizabeth, Nicholas and Nathaniel; and 26 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by brother Marvin Steffensen and three sisters, Betty Mitchell, Jeanette (Markley) Ennen and JoAnn (Tom) Costigan; four sisters-in-law, Clarine Steffensen, Delores Steffensen, Susan Steffensen and Barbara Steffensen.

Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Zilpha (Oleson) Steffensen; wives Ruth (Edwards) and Iola (Meinders, Gray) Steffensen; oldest son Harlan; four brothers, DeVere, Clyde, Garth and Donald; and two sisters: Elaine Yates; and Mae Anderson/Legg.
