OSAGE
- Dorcas Ask, 91, of Osage, passed away Sunday (Sept.
20, 2009) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Dorcas Luella was born Jan. 10, 1918, in Charles City to
Frank and Mildred (Carter) Shelledy. She graduated from
Osage High School in 1936. Dorcas married Manvil Ask on
June 14, 1940, in Osage. Manvil and Dorcas farmed west
of Osage for 43 years and moved to Osage in 2003.
Dorcas worked as a cook for the Osage Community Schools
and the West End Drive-In. She was a member of the First
United Methodist Church for 81 years, enjoying her
church circle and those long-lasting friendships.
Dorcas enjoyed neighborhood coffee parties and dancing.
Those who knew Dorcas knew that her family was her
world. Dorcas will be deeply missed by her family and
friends.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday,
Sept. 26, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in
Osage with the Rev. Anna Blaedel officiating. Inurnment
will be at the Osage Cemetery.
There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following
the service at the church.
Dorcas is survived by her children, Dick (Beth) of
Rochester, Minn., Don (Judy) of St. Ansgar and LuAnn
(Neil) of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Mike (Carol) Ask,
of Mesa, Ariz., Greg (Kimber) Ask of Longmont, Colo.,
Jeremy (Brenda) Ask of Canton, S.D., and Gina (Eric)
Goddard of Osage; step-grandchildren, Lisa Brenno,
Shelly (Todd) Pyfferoen and Krista (Mark) Brenno; nine
great-grandchildren, Michael, Maddisyn, Tasmyn, Kale,
Bodie, Carson, Nathan, Thayer and Autumn; four
step-great-grandchildren, Ashley, Allen, Alicia and
Trevor; and a brother, Keith (Rosie) Shelledy of Mesa,
Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Manvil, in 2005; a brother, Alvin Shelledy; and a
sister, Wilma Herr.

19, 2009) at Wright Medical Center in Clarion.
Funeral services for Tena Finn will be held 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the United Methodist Church in
Clarion with Pastor Cynthia Finn officiating. Burial
will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier

CHARLES
CITY -Geraldine "Gerry" Knudsvig, 86, of Charles City,
died Sunday (Sept. 20, 2009) at the 11th Street
Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
A funeral Mass for Gerry Knudsvig will be held at 10:30
a.m. today, Wednesday, at the Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church with Monsignor Stanley Hayek celebrating
the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles
City.
Visitation will be held at from 9 to 10:30 a.m. today,
Wednesday, at the church.
Geraldine Eunice Bonfig Knudsvig was born April 30,
1923, at Ossian, the daughter of Albert and Catherine (Timp)
Bonfig. She graduated from St. Francis De Sales in
Ossian and Pitz's Beauty School in Waterloo.
On Oct. 20, 1945, she was united in marriage to Ernest
Knudsvig at Saint Francis De Sales Catholic Church in
Ossian. They moved to Charles City in 1948 where they
owned a beauty salon for many years and enjoyed working
together.
After they retired they spent winters in Arizona and
visited family and friends throughout the U.S. They
loved to dance, play bridge and euchre, play golf and
enjoyed fishing in Freeport, Minn., and on the
Mississippi with their brothers and sisters, nieces and
nephews and friends.
Survivors include a brother-in-law, Parnell (Rose)
Knudsvig, of Lake Geneva, Wis.; four sisters-in-law,
Carol (Salvatore) Fugarino of Milwaukee, Wis., Linda
(Dr. Quentin) Kling of Palos Heights, Ill., Jean Seery
of Cedar Rapids, and Leota Knudsvig of Decorah; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband,
Ernest, on May 4, 2002; a brother, Linus Bonfig; three
brothers-in-law, Alden Knudsvig, Lein Knudsvig, Frank
Seery; and a sister-in-law, Helen Knudsvig.

- Diann J. Bonjour, 55, of Dows passed
away Monday (Sept. 21, 2009) at the
Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
Funeral services for Diann J. Bonjour
will be at 1:3o p.m. today, Thursday,
Sept. 24, 2009, at the First Lutheran
Church in Dows with Pastor Bob Edwards
officiating. Burial will take place in
the Hansell Cemetery near Hansell.
Visitation for Diann J. Bonjour was held
from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23,
2009, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 100 N.
Lee St. in Dows, and will continue one
hour prior to services today at the
church.
Diann Jean, the daughter of James and
Beverly Niber Thomas, was born July 31,
1954, in Mason City. She grew up in the
Mason City and Clear Lake area where she
attended school. Diann graduated from
Mason City High School in 1972.
She worked for a time as a nurse's
assistant at the Good Shepherd Nursing
Home in Mason City but worked the
majority of her life in manufacturing
factories. Most recently Diann had been
working at Eaton in Belmond.
Diann was united in marriage to Wade
Bonjour on July 27, 1996. The couple
made their home in Dows. Diann enjoyed
quilting, crocheting and crafts. She
raised Pomeranian dogs. Diann was an
avid photographer and loved researching
genealogy. Walking through cemeteries
with Wade was just one of her many
pastimes. Diann was most fond of
spending time with her three
grandchildren.
Diann was an active member of the
Franklin County Genealogic Society and
devoted member of the First Lutheran
Church in Dows.
Diann is survived by her husband, Wade;
sons, Paul of Stanhope: Richard and
Robin of Marshalltown: Jamie and wife
Jennifer of Cummings; three
grandchildren, Emma, Grace and
Christian; mother, Beverly Thomas of
Mason City; three sisters, Carol, Sharon
and Linda; five brothers, James, Robert,
Jerry, Gary and Tim; and numerous other
relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her father,
maternal and paternal grandparents and a
nephew, Brandon Thomas.

MASON
CITY - Robert "Bob" Lee Ezarski Sr., 74,
of Mason City, died Sunday (Sept. 20,
2009) at Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa, Mason City from injuries sustained
in a motorcycle accident.
A memorial service for Bob will be held
at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at
the Salvation Army, 747 Village Green
Drive S.W., Mason City, with Maj. Gary
Cole officiating.
Those wishing to share pictures of Bob
may bring them to the Salvation Army on
Saturday to be displayed on the picture
board.
Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park
Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City,
with military graveside honors conducted
by members of the Mason City Veterans
Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held one hour prior
to service time on Saturday at the
Salvation Army.
Robert Lee Ezarski was born on June 15,
1935, in Iowa City, the son of Richard
Davis and Eva (Ezarski). Bob attended
and graduated from Mason City High
School.
Bob was inducted into the U.S. Navy on
June 5, 1955, and served his country
honorably during the Korean War until
his honorable discharge in 1961. After
his honorable discharge, Bob returned to
Mason City and worked at a safety pin
factory before moving to Long Beach,
Calif., where Bob worked at an airplane
factory until moving back to Mason City,
helping his son Robert in his masonry
business until his retirement.
Bob loved and enjoyed riding his
Harley-Davidson motorcycle, traveling
all over the United States. Bob also
enjoyed camping, going to motorcycle
rallies, swimming at the YMCA and his
dog, Edea.
Bob was a 24-year member of the ABATE
motorcycle organization and regularly
attended the Salvation Army in Mason
City.
Survivors include his son, Robert
(Cherri) Ezarski Jr. of Mason City; his
grandchildren, Wyeth Ezarski of Apple
Valley, Minn., and Tyler Ezarski of
Mason City; his sister, Judy Huisman of
Dougherty; four nephews, Dan, Jerry,
Larry and Will Huisman, all of
Dougherty; as well as other extended
family members and all his other biker
buds.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
and other biker buds.
Following the committal service at
Memorial Park Cemetery, a gathering of
family and friends for sharing of
memories will be at Burke's Bar & Grill,
1221 N. Federal Ave., Mason City, please
bring your favorite photo of Bob with
you to share.

MASON CITY - Patrick John Farrell,
formerly of Whittemore, died Saturday
(Sept. 19, 2009) at the Concord Care
Center in Garner after a six-month
battle with brain cancer. He was 55.
Patrick John Farrell was born June 12,
1954, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of
Pat and Sheila (Hand) Farrell. He
graduated from Bishop Garrigan High
School in 1973 and Mankato State
University in 1985.
Pat worked various jobs throughout the
years and really enjoyed his last job
working on the road construction crew
for Rohlin Construction Co. of
Estherville.
He loved watching sports and was a big
Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings and
Iowa Hawkeye fan. Pat also liked going
to car races, classic car shows, cycling
and going to rock concerts.
He is survived by sisters, Diane
Farrell, of Belmond; Kathy Farrell, of
Mankato, Minn.; a special aunt, Mary
Feldman, of Emmetsburg; aunts, Julie
Hand, of Virginia; May Ann Hand, of
Kansas; Rita Hand, of Texas; and many
cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents
and an infant brother, Michael.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30
a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic
Church with Father Victor Ramaeker
officiating. Burial will be in St.
Michael's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.
until 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St.
Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore.

Hospice in New Hampton or to the family.

MASON CITY -Madonna L. Freeman, age 85,
of St. Petersburg, Fla., passed away at
her home Sunday (Sept. 20, 2009).
Graveside services will be held at 11
a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at
Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City,
Iowa.
Madonna was born in Ionia, Iowa. She was
united in marriage to Shelby L. Freeman
Sr. on Sept. 16, 1941.
Madonna lived in Clear Lake where she
owned and operated Western Auto Stores
for 10 years with her husband, Shelby.
In 1978 they moved to St. Petersburg,
Fla., where they managed the True Value
Hardware in Treasure Island.
She is survived by her loving children,
Shelby Freeman Jr., Steve Freeman and
Sandra Showalter; sister, Maxine
Jackson; 11 grandchildren; 19
great-grandchildren; and three
great-great grandchildren.

Barbara Anne (Boeset) Kirchgatter, 60,
of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., and formerly
of Carpenter, will be held at 1 p.m.

Barb passed away on Thursday (Sept. 17,
200) at her home in Fort Myers Beach.
She had been courageously fighting
cancer since the spring of 2008.
Barbara Anne Boeset was born March 23,
1949, to Hugo and Maxine (Munsell)
Boeset in Grafton, Iowa. She was
baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel
Lutheran Church in Grafton. She attended
grade school in Grafton and graduated
from St. Ansgar High School in 1967.
She married Leland Kirchgatter on June
8, 1979. Barb and Lee managed country
clubs and golf courses near Cresco,
Iowa, Bemidji, Minn., and Walker, Minn.,
between the years of 1980 and 2005. Barb
was currently working at a Walgreens in
Fort Myers Beach.
She loved butterflies, chocolate, her
Yorkies Katie and Kodie, Florida and her
family.
Barb is survived by her husband, Lee;
two children, Michael (DeAnn) Read of
Northwood and Amy (Mark) Wallin of
Alden, Minn.; two step-children, Scott
(Mona) Kirchgatter of Anthon, Iowa, and
Mark Kirchgatter of Grafton; seven
grandchildren, Joseph and Justin Read of
Northwood, Spencer, Jacob and Ryan
Wallin of Alden, and Allison and Megan
Kirchgatter of Anthon; mother, Maxine
(Norbert) Pint of Forest City; siblings,
Hugh (Jan) Boeset of Naperville, Ill.,
Kathleen (Stan) Miller of Plano, Texas,
and Angela Anderson (fianc�e Deron
Steiner) of Montgomery, Ind.;
half-sister Phyllis (Harvey) Norby of

Clear Lake, died Monday (Sept. 21, 2009) at the
I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City.
A private graveside service was held at the
Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

choice in memory of Gladys Law.
Gladys was born May 3, 1917, in Radcliff,
Hamilton County, the daughter of Lewis and Mabel
(Gabel) Knutson. They moved to Clear Lake in
1936. She was united in marriage to Roy "Chub"
Law on Oct. 24, 1938, in Polk County. She was a
longtime member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge.
Gladys is survived by her two sons, Ron
(Margaret) Law, of Ankeny, and Duane (Donna) Law
of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Susan (Doug)
Oliver, Michael (Dawn) Law, Marne Markwardt, Amy
(Blair) Doll and Mark (Allison) Law; nine
great-grandchildren; and a sister Verna Pierce,
of Glen Ellen, Va.

Mason City, passed away Monday (Sept.

Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Shirley was born on Sept. 8, 1932, in
Mason City, the daughter of Raymond and
Vivian (Whitney) Loeckle. She was a
lifelong resident of Mason City. She was
united in marriage to Donald Schlie on
Jan. 19, 1958.
Shirley was a member of the Wesley
United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed gardening and especially had
a green thumb when it came to flowers.
Shirley was a perfectionist in
everything she did, but still could
maintain a wonderful sense of humor.
She loved to cook, crochet, dance and
listen to music and also looked forward
to her shopping trips. Most of all,
Shirley was dedicated to her family in
which she took much pride and joy.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Donald, on July 10, 2003, and
brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and
Cindy Loeckle.
Those left to cherish her memory include
her children, Randy (Susan) Schlie of
Des Moines, Rickie Schlie of Mason City
and Lisa (Matt) Durham of O'Fallon, Mo.;
grandchildren, Spencer and Amanda Grarup,
Brooklyn Durham, Emarald, Colton and
Sheldon Schlie and Topher Riddle;

"Bonnie" Spahn, 78, of Cedar Rapids and formerly
of Dubuque, finished her walk of life on
Saturday (Sept. 19, 2009) following a long
journey with Alzheimer's disease at Mercy
Hallmar in Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the
Church of the Nativity, 1225 Alta Vista St.,
Dubuque. Burial will be in Mount Calvary
Cemetery, Dubuque.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m Friday at the
Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and

Bonnie was born Jan. 5, 1931, in Dougherty,
Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Leocadia Cahalan.
On Aug. 19, 1950, she was united in marriage to
Tom Spahn at Holy Family Parish in Mason City,
Iowa.
Tom and Bonnie raised their five daughters in
Dubuque, where Bonnie was the executive director
of the American Cancer Society for 25 years. She
was a member of the Holy Family Circle at
Nativity, ABWA and Wa-tan-ye.
Those left to cherish memories are daughters,
Kathy (John) Klecker, of Pasadena, Calif., Nancy
(Tom) Hora, of Cedar Rapids, Julie Teachout, of
Iowa City, and Colleen (Rob Whitman) Fitzgerald,
of Iowa City; 12 grandchildren, Tom, Michael and
Ben Klecker; Angie (Jason) Mathiasen, Emily and
Phil Hora; Kevin and Tricia Teachout, Shannon
(Casey) Lynch, Patrick (Beth) Fitzgerald, Megan
and Molly Fitzgerald, and two great-grandsons,
Emmett and Jacob Mathiasen. She is also survived
by her wonderful sisters, Mary Hoffmann and
Imogene Larson of Mason City, Bernie (Adrian)
Ferriera of Peru, Ind., and Sally Cover of
Middlebury, Ind.; two sisters-in-law, Donna and
Shirley Cahalan; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; a
daughter, Patricia; parents; parents-in-law;
five brothers; and her oldest, dearest sister,
Rose.

Alzheimer's Association of Eastern Iowa.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mary Anne
Nelson, Hospice of Mercy and all the staff at
Hallmar for their loving, compassionate care of
our mother and grandmother.
Bonnie's bright smile and pretty blue eyes will
be missed by all.

- Doyle Boutelle, 88, of Northwood, died Monday
(Sept. 21, 2009) at the Heritage Care Center in

A graveside service for Doyle will be held at 9
a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at the Memorial
Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City, with
Pastor Wendi Gillan officiating. Military
graveside honors will be conducted by members of
Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post No. 6779 of
Northwood.
A celebration of Doyle's life will be held at 11
a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at the United
Methodist Church, 1000 First Ave. N., Northwood,
with Pastor Wendi Gillan officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m.
today, Wednesday, at the Conner Colonial Chapel,
1008 First Ave. S., Northwood.
Those wishing to give a memorial may direct it
to the Doyle Boutelle Memorial Fund in his
memory.
Doyle was born on Aug. 2, 1921, in Kensett, the
son of Raymond and Mabel (Hildreth) Boutelle.
Doyle graduated from Kensett High School and
Mason City Junior College. Doyle was inducted
into the U.S. Air Force on March 27, 1943, at
Camp Dodge, Iowa, and served with the 492nd Bomb
Squadron serving in Burma and India during World
War II. He was honorably discharged as a
corporal on Nov. 13, 1945, at Fort Sheridan,
Ill.
On Jan. 16, 1944, Doyle was united in marriage
to Dorothy Flarup at the First United Methodist
Church in Mason City, and to this union two
daughters were born, Carol and Lonnie. Dorothy
preceded him in death on May 31, 1988.
On Dec. 28, 1991, Doyle was united in marriage
to Thelma (Frandle) Krull at the First Lutheran
Church in Northwood.
Doyle's working years included working at
International Harvester in Mason City and
Hanlontown. In 1957, Doyle and his family moved
to Northwood where Doyle was part owner in the
Northwood Implement Co.
After many years Doyle was ready for a new
challenge. Doyle and John Thompson started J-D
One Stop, which they operated for many years.
Doyle's other accomplishments included
establishing a garden center, building and
operating a car wash, building the Viking
Restaurant and the development of Northwood
Mobile Home Park.
Doyle was the proud grandpa of five
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Doyle was an avid golfer, loved boating, was a
die-hard Minnesota Vikings and Northwood-Kensett
Vikings fan, loved to go camping in his travel
trailer and enjoyed attending his
grandchildren's activities wherever they might
lead him. He loved woodworking and built many
things in his shop for family and friends.
He was very active in the United Methodist
Church in Northwood, serving on and chairing
numerous committees and singing in the church
choir. He was also very active in the Northwood
Lions Club and was very community-minded.
Doyle was an extremely easy-going and patient
person. He always looked on the bright side of
things and always had a quiet and positive
demeanor. "Well isn't that nice," was always
Doyle's response when one of his family showed
him something new.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife,
Thelma Boutelle of Northwood; daughters, Carol
(Phil) Johnson of Mason City and Lonnie (Steve)
Forland of Northwood; grandchildren, Lance
(Tina) Johnson of Mason City, Todd (Sarah)
Johnson of Cedar Falls, Amy Scheib of Ankeny and
Chad (Tara) Forland of Emmons, Minn.;
great-grandchildren, Reid Johnson, Reilly, Tate
and Vance Johnson, McKenna, Raegan and Kamryn
Scheib, Kyle, Dion and Brooke Forland;
step-children, Brenda (Russ) Ober of Leesburg,
Ga., Linda (Tom) Engstrom of Mankato, Minn.,
James (Teresa) Krull of Northwood, Eldon
(Janice) Krull of Marshall, Minn., and Paul
(Cynthia) Krull of Northwood;
step-grandchildren, Erika (James) Livermont,
Christopher Ober, Kristin Engstrom, Peder
Engstrom, Jesse (Erin) Krull, Chad (Allyson)
Krull, Benjamin Krull, Katelyn Krull, Kayla,
John and Tara Krull; one
step-great-granddaughter, Emma Livermont;

Doyle was preceded in death by his parents, his
first wife, Dorothy; granddaughter, Carrie Joy

ROCKWELL
- Robert "Bob" A. Haugen, 67, of
Rockwell died Monday (Sept. 21, 2009) at
the University of Minnesota Hospital in
Minneapolis.
A celebration of his life will be held
10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Rockwell
United Methodist Church, 303 Monroe St.,
Rockwell, with the Rev. Jon Scherb
officiating. Inurnment will be held in
the Rockwell Cemetery.
There will be no visitation; upon Bob's
wishes he was cremated.

directed to the Robert "Bob" Haugen
Memorial Fund in care of the family
Robert Haugen was born Nov. 11, 1941, in
Mason City, the son of Harold and Wilma
(Foster) Haugen. He attended elementary
school at Madison in Mason City, and
graduated from Rockwell High School in
1959. He enlisted in the Air Force and
served his country for a short time.
After his return from the service, he
worked in the area at various places as
a diesel mechanic. One of his most
memorable jobs was when he worked on the
Trans Alaska Pipeline from 1975-77 in
Fairbanks, Alaska. He then lived in
Colorado for a short period of time,
before moving back to the area in the
early 1980s.
He was married to C. Kay Hejna on July
30, 1988, at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua. He developed emphysema in 1990
and received a lung transplant on Sept.
20, 2005, (4 years and 1 day from the
date of his death). Bob was an advocate
for the importance of being an organ
donor, and also the dangers of smoking.
He also was very proud of his
30-plus-year membership of AA.
Bob enjoyed traveling, making ceramics,
shooting pistols, watching T.V., and
visiting casinos and dog tracks. He
loved all automobiles and even restored
a few through the years. He also enjoyed
the time he spent with his family and
friends.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Haugen;
step-son, Scott Hejna and wife Becky;
siblings, Wanda Neve and husband, Deets,
Gary Haugen and wife, Mary Ellen, Linda
Watt, Larry Haugen and wife, Laurie;
special friend, Bob Sturges;
stepgrandchild, Christopher Strobel;
honorary grandchildren, Chelsie and
Halie Bryant and Stephanie Rondquist;
special daughter, JoAnne McNabb and
Larry Cameron; honorary children, Carmen
and Tom Bryant; and many nieces, nephews
and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

(Sept. 22, 2009) at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126
Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the

p.m. today, Thursday, at the
Hogan-Bremer-Moore-Colonial Chapel with
a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service.

Maxine Mary Mitchell was born March 7,
1926, in Sleepy Eye, Minn., the daughter
of John Joseph and Stella Cecilia
(Crabb) Mitchell. She was baptized at
St. Mary's Catholic Church. She grew up
in Waseca, Minn., and was confirmed at
Sacred Heart Church. When she was 15,
her family moved to Mason City, where
she graduated from St. Joseph's High
School.
Maxine was united in marriage on June 3,
1944, to Richard Holt; to this union
four children were born.
Maxine helped with Holt and Sons
Sanitation business. She worked at the
VFW for 18 years, Lowe Cleaning Service
for 10 years and Mutual Federal Building
for 12 years, retiring in 1993.
After retirement she enjoyed
volunteering and helping her elderly
neighbors. Maxine enjoyed dancing,
crocheting and crafts and loved spoiling
her grandchildren.
Maxine is survived by her children, Gary
(Cathy) Holt, Ronald (Theresa) Holt and
Joella (Richard) Winters, all of Mason
City; grandchildren, Penny and Troy Holt
of Charles City, Doug and Cary Holt of
Mason City, Mark (Christine) Holt and
Ben (Melissa) Holt, all of Mason City,
Angella Winters, of Watertown, S.D.,
Jessica Winters of Mason City and Brad
(Karen) Eskildsen, of Marietta, Calif.;
stepgrandchild Nicole Dault, of Mason
City; niece Rita Hewitt, of Mason City;
along with numerous great-grandchildren,
nieces, nephews other relatives and
friends, including Sandy Holt and Naomi

Maxine is preceded in death by her

MASON CITY -Charlotte A. Klatt, 84, of
Mason City, died Tuesday (Sept. 22,
2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit.
A private family inurnment will be held

Charlotte A. Bartleson was born Oct. 1,
1924, in Forest City, the daughter of
Bernhardt and Agnes (Madsen) Bartleson.
After graduating from high school, she
worked at various jobs. During this time
she moved to Mason City.
In 1952, she and Joseph A. Jenson had a
daughter, Ellen. Charlotte worked in
several restaurants in Mason City before
going to work at the Suzie Q Caf�. When
the owners put the restaurant up for
sale, Charlotte did what she later
called "took the plunge" and bought the
Suzie Q.
For over 20 years, Charlotte and the
Suzie Q spent, in her words, "the best
years of her life." On Jan. 13, 1968,
Charlotte married Ralph Klatt in Mason
City. Ralph retired in 1980, and helped
Charlotte at the Suzie Q Restaurant for
the next four years before she sold the
business and retired in 1984.
She enjoyed traveling, visiting family
members, crossword puzzles, reading
mystery novels and the Reader's Digest.
She has lived with her daughter for the
last 12 years and in 2006 they were
adopted by a cat, which put much
laughter in Charlotte's life.
Charlotte is survived by her children:
Ralph Douglas Klatt and wife, Carol, of
Paducah, Ky., David L. Klatt of Mason
City and his fianc�e, Sherlyn Horgen of
St. Ansgar; and Ellen J. Mix of Mason
City; and one granddaughter,
Mary-Kathleen Klatt of Milwaukee, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Ralph; and her
brothers and sisters.

Gladys was born May 3, 1917, in Radcliff,
Hamilton County, the daughter of Lewis and Mabel
(Gabel) Knutson. They moved to Clear Lake in
1936. She was united in marriage to Roy "Chub"
Law on Oct. 24, 1938, in Polk County. She was a
longtime member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge.

Shirley was born on Sept. 8, 1932, in

Jan. 19, 1958.
Shirley was a member of the Wesley
United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed gardening and especially had
a green thumb when it came to flowers.
Shirley was a perfectionist in
everything she did, but still could
maintain a wonderful sense of humor.
She loved to cook, crochet, dance and
listen to music and also looked forward
to her shopping trips. Most of all,
Shirley was dedicated to her family in
which she took much pride and joy.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Donald, on July 10, 2003, and
brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and
Cindy Loeckle.
Those left to cherish her memory include
her children, Randy (Susan) Schlie of
Des Moines, Rickie Schlie of Mason City
and Lisa (Matt) Durham of O'Fallon, Mo.;

in Mason City.

Marilyn was born Jan. 28, 1934, in Des Moines,
the daughter of Clifford and Beryl (Donaldson)
Lavender. She graduated from Mason City High
School in 1951.
She was married to Quentin Bertelsen in 1954.
They lived and farmed south of Thornton for 35
years before moving northwest of Mason City on a
farm they purchased. They would later move into
Mason City in 2005.
Marilyn worked for Opportunity Village as a
house parent with her husband for 13 years.
Family was very important to Marilyn and she
loved her grandchildren and had a special place
in her heart for her great-grandson.
She also loved to travel and she wintered in
Texas for eight years. She loved spending time
outdoors and loved spending time on the farm.
She was a member of First Congregational United
Church of Christ.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Quentin, of
Mason City; children, Kathy Hirsch and husband,
Jerry of Mason City, and Bruce Bertelsen and
wife, Carla, of Fort Atkinson, Wis.;
grandchildren, Ryan Hirsch and wife, Holly, of
Mason City, Eric Hirsch and wife, Devan, of
Mason City, Alyssa Bertelsen and Jeremy
Bertelsen of Fort Atkinson, Wis.;
great-grandson, Brody Hirsch; brothers, Ron
Lavender of Acapulco, Mexico, and Don Lavender
of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Janice Marilyn Graham, the daughter of Frank and
Emma (Hellickson) Helvick, was born Sept. 16,
1935, at Forest City. She attended country
school west of Forest City and Forest City High
School.
On Sept. 14, 1951, she was married to Richard
Graham at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
They lived in Forest City until 1959 when they
moved to Northwood. In 1967, they returned to
Forest City and Janice began working with her
mother-in-law at the Graham Shop, a women's
dress shop. She retired from the shop in 1996.
She enjoyed reading, cooking, spending time with
her family and attending her monthly class
breakfasts.
Janice was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church
and WELCA.
She is survived by her husband, Richard, of
Forest City; three children, Gregory (Paula)
Graham of Belton, Texas, Linda Mason (Howard
Julius) of Buffalo Center and Lisa (Kevin)
Lunning of Forest City; seven grandchildren,

Jan was born Sept. 21, 1940, the daughter of
James and June (Palmer) Tenney, in Mason City.
She received her education at the Mason City
Township (Central Heights School) and St.
Joseph's School in Mason City. She married
Philip Clark Seely on July 11, 1968, in Sioux
Falls, S.D.
Mary was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic
Church, the BPO Does, in which she was president
in 1977 and state treasurer in 1978, a lifetime
member of the VFW Auxiliary, and a member of the
Women of the Moose, having held a couple of
offices.
She was also a life time member of the U.S.S.
Wisconsin Association, and a member of the Fleet
Reserve Association.
She is survived by her six daughters, Christina
Marie Eldridge of Summerville, S.C., Patricia
June Hjelle of Mason City, Ann Marie Shaffer of
Des Moines, Mary Jo (Vern) Duffield of Lake
City, Minn., Kimberly Kay Alejandre of Lodi,
Calif., and Michelle Lynn Hathaway of Mason
City; stepsons, Tony, Pat and Tim Seely; 26
grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, a
brother, Jerome (Jean) Tenney, of Goose Creek,
S.C.; and a sister, Joy Martzahl, of Burchinal.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband, one grandson, Scott, a brother, James,
and her mother and father-in -law.

CITY - James Herbert Mills, 82, of Cedar
Rapids died Thursday (Sept. 24, 2009) at
St. Luke's Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Monday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Chapel,
126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the
Rev. Michael Scheuller officiating.
Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph
Cemetery, Mason City, where full
military honors will be conducted by
members of Mason City Veterans Memorial
Association.

Jim was born on April 14, 1927, in
Decatur, Ill., to Everett and Winifred
Mills. He married Shirley Boyle in Mason
City on June 7, 1947. He then married
Agnes West in Milton, Iowa, on June 27,
1992.
He had an automobile repair business in
Mason City for 20 years and then went to
work for Lifetime Motor Homes there
until it closed. He then was the head of
the maintenance department for the
Coca-Cola bottling plant in Mason City
and then transferred to the Cedar Rapids
plant.
Jim was an Army veteran of World War II,
a life member of the Mason City VFW and
a member of Moose and Eagles clubs in
Cedar Rapids.

Ryal, Pastor Ralph E.
MARION - Pastor Ralph E. Ryal, 80, went
to be with the Lord on Sept. 13, 2009, a
resident of Flint, Texas, formerly of
Marion.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 7, 2009, at Capital City Baptist
Church in Lansing, Mich.
Survivors include his wife, Vesta, of
Flint, Texas; children, John (Linda), of
Cedar Rapids, Patrick (Bonnie), of San
Jose, Costa Rica, Scott (Nancy) of
Flint, Texas; seven grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren; and a host of
children in Christ.
Ralph was born Oct. 19, 1928, in
Lansing, Mich. He was united in marriage
to Vesta Hackney on Nov. 7, 1947.
In his early 20s he gave his life to
Christ and moved his family to
Springfield, Mo., to attend Bible
college. He pastored churches in Iowa,
Texas, Louisiana and Michigan, sharing
his love of the Lord.
He taught in Christian schools in his
later years and also worked tirelessly
with the men at the Rescue Mission in
Lansing, Mich. His witness led to the
salvation of many precious souls. Surely
he has heard the words of our Savior,
"well done, good and faithful servant."

Ellen Rose Weiss was born Nov. 27, 1930,
at Mason City, a daughter of Fred and
Irene (Sears) Stockberger. She was
united in marriage to Frank J. Weiss on
Sept. 20, 1958, at Holy Family Catholic
Church.
Ellen graduated from Mason City High
School in 1949. During high school and
for a short time after, she worked at
the Park Clinic as a record keeper. She
also worked at the First National Bank,
Mason City, as a teller and later worked
at Equitable Life Insurance Co., Des
Moines. For many years she was a
benefits specialist at Principal
Financial Group, Mason City, retiring in
1996.
She enjoyed bowling, dancing at the
Surf, and taking bus tours across the
United States.
Ellen's life was centered on her family;
she especially loved her grandchildren
and great-granddaughter.
She was a member of Holy Family Catholic
Church and T.O.P.S., where she treasured
her many friendships.
Survivors include her husband, Frank
Weiss, Mason City; her children, Jeanne
(Tim) Blutt, Des Moines, Donald (Sally)
Weiss, Cambridge, Mass., Janet (Ken)

IONIA - Eva M. Young, 95, of Ionia died
Thursday morning (Sept. 24, 2009) Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services for Eva Young will be

Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles
City, with Pastor David Werges of St.

Eva Mary Roethler was born June 12,
1914, in rural Ionia, the daughter of
Frank and Emma (Slack) Roethler. She
graduated from Ionia High School.
On Nov. 6, 1936, she was united in
marriage to Glen Young at Charles City.
Eva was a farm wife, while also working
as a secretary for several local doctors
in Charles City. She was a member of the
Chickasaw County Historical Society,
Rural Neighbors and was a 4-H leader for
more than 20 years. Her interests
included flowers, gardening and sewing.
Living family members include her five
children, Betty Attleson of Rochester,
Minn., Donald (Julie) Young of Oakland,
Neb., Bill (Shirley) Young of Gladbrook,
Richard (Kay) Young of Charles City and
Mary (Joe) Koenigsfeld of Dakota City,
Neb.; 16 grandchildren; 37
great-grandchildren; five
great-great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband;
great-great-granddaughter, Faith
Eckenrod; and a brother, Charles
Roethler.
