-Ardeth Laake,
81, of Belmond
died Sunday
(Oct. 11, 2009)
at her home in
Belmond.

Christian burial
will be held
10:30 a.m.
Thursday, Oct.
15, at St.
Francis Xavier
Catholic Church
in Belmond with
the Rev. Nels
Hernandez
officiating.
Interment will
be in the St.
Francis Catoli
Cemetery near
Belmond.
Visitation will
be from 4 to 7
p.m. today at
the Andrews
Funeral Home,
516 First St.
S.E., Belmond,
with a 4 p.m.
rosary and a 7
p.m. Christian
wake service.
Visitation will
continue one
hour prior to
services on
Thursday at the
church.
Ardeth Jenison
was born on
Sept. 11, 1928,
to Earl and
Hazel Sandburg
Jenison on the
family farm
north of
Belmond. She was
educated in
country school
through eighth
grade and
graduated from
Belmond High
School in 1946.
In 1949 she
graduated from
Iowa Methodist
School of
Nursing,
achieving a
childhood dream
to become a
registered
nurse.
Her early
nursing practice
included
psychiatric
nursing and
caring for
babies in a
premature
nursery in the
St. Louis area.
In 1957, she
returned to
Belmond and
worked at the
Steele Memorial
Clinic until
1963. In 1963
she became the
school nurse,
where she served
as friend and
advocate for all
students in the
Belmond
Community School
until 1981.
Raising four
children alone,
she found that
she needed to
supplement her
income and so
went to work on
weekends at the
Belmond
Community
Hospital where
she also took
obstetrical
calls at night.
She often said
that witnessing
the miracle of
birth was her
favorite part of
nursing,
assisting
hundreds of
mothers to bring
new life into
the world.
Belmond was
richer for
Ardeth's
contributions,
one being the
Belmond
Ambulance which
she helped to
start in 1972.
She taught the
first class of
ambulance
volunteers and
served with them
for many years,
rescuing injured
people from car
accidents and
many other life
threatening
situations.
In 1972 she
married her best
friend, Belmond
businessman,
Walter Laake.
Their blended
family included
10 children.
Ardeth and Walt
enjoyed fishing
in Canada, going
to girls
basketball
games, gardening
and spending
time with family
and friends.
Needle work was
another area in
which Ardeth was
very
accomplished.
Knitting and
embroidery were
favorite
activities. Upon
her retirement
she became
interested in
quilting.
She hand pieced
and quilted more
than 100 quilts,
the complicated
"Baltimore
Album" style
being her
specialty.
Ardeth is
recognized
nationally as a
master quilter,
but when asked
to help sew
costumes for
Iowa River
Players
productions she
would
temporarily put
her quilting
away.
Ardeth never
took the easy
way, never did
anything just
part way and
always gave her
best.
She was preceded
in death by her
parents, her
husband, Walt;
her twin
brother, Arnold;
brothers George
and Robert;
stepdaughter,
Mrs. Haggi
(Elizabeth Laake)
Holtzman;
stepson, Jos
Laake; grandson,
Joey Laake; and
son-in-law,
Steve Schnell.
She is survived
by her children,
Luanne Paule
(Cal) Krabbe,
Kathy Paule
Schnell and
Nancy Paule
Huisinga and
David Paule; and
stepchildren,
