Gerald M. "Barney" VanBuskirk

KLEMME - Gerald "Barney" M. VanBuskirk, 80, of Klemme, died Saturday (Oct. 10, 2009) at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton, in Hampton, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.

Gerald M. VanBuskirk, the son of Lloyd and Annie (Brass) VanBuskirk, was born July 27, 1929, in Twin Lake Township, rural Hancock county, Iowa. He attended Belmond High School and graduated in 1947.

Following his education, Barney enlisted in the United States Armed Services, serving in the Air Force from July of 1948 thru July of 1949. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Barney was later re-enlisted for a second tenure of service during the Korean Conflict in July of 1949 and was honorably discharged in July of 1955.

Barney was united in marriage to Neva Ann Anderson on Feb. 6, 1955, at the Klemme United Methodist Church. The couple's union was blessed with two daughters, Kathy and Paula; and a son, Gerald Jr.

Barney's work life included many years as a self-employed, professional long distance and regional truck driver. He had also spent many years providing for the needs of his family as a farmer. He enjoyed the hard work and reaping the fruits of his labors in working the land.

He had also been a salesman for many years, where his salesmanship and knowledge of his trade often came with the acknowledgement that "Barney could sell ice to an Eskimo!". He definitely used the gift of conversation and his inate abilities to communicate with both friends and acquaintances to its fullest.

Barney was a man who loved a good adventure, whether it was a cruise in one of his beloved fast cars when he might be known to light up the pavement under his wheels, a fishing excursion with one of his buddies, or a trucking journey across the country where the "Crapshooter", as he was known on the CB radio would provide for the needs of his family.

His wife Ann would often ride shotgun with him on the road. In more recent times his love of exploring new things continued to flourish when his children brought him a computer which at age 80, he decided was a great place to spend time playing games such as solitaire, which was a favorite.

Barney also enjoyed the simple things in life, such as teaching the grandkids to play solitaire and cribbage, family get-togethers which most certainly would have to include the tradtional games of "Pepper" and "Buck Yuker". He also enjoyed times spent playing cards with his buddies and working in his flowers.

He cherished his grandchildren and loved to spend time with them whenever possible. They always had a special place in "Grandpa Barney's" heart. He and Ann also enjoyed their many so-called adopted family in the community.

Barney was a past member of the Masonic Lodge in the various places the family had lived and was an active member of the American Legion Post in Garner, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife and life partner of nearly 55 years, Ann VanBuskirk, of Klemme; his daughter, Kathy, and her companion Bob, of Rogers, Ark., and her children and their families, Tanya, and husband, Allen Jarchow, and children, Allison and Abigail, Nicole, and husband, Dan Kies, and their children, Raven, Alexis, and Austin, Jeanie, and husband, Ken Farr, and their children, Zain and Isiah, and Rick Thurman and his children, Kelsey, Jake, Ashley, and Luke; his daughter, Paula, and husband, Gary Kruse, of Minot, N.D., and their children and families, Mandy Kruse and Trent; April and Raymond Lockhart, and their children, Kristen and Diamond, and Kelly Kruse; and a son, Gerald VanBuskirk Jr. of Klemme, and his daughter, Jessica VanBuskirk. Also surviving are four sisters and one brother and many extended family.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Most people knew that quilting was one of Mary's life passions. She was the president twice and a longtime member of North Iowa Quilters. Mary made and assisted in making hundreds of quilts. Her daughters received many quilts and many of the quilts went to Habitat for Humanity, Charity Quilts for the Crisis Intervention Center and baby quilts for AIDS babies.

Quilting was not her only passion as she and her husband co-owned and operated Bill's BBQ in the 200 block of South Madison Avenue. She was a great waitress! Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Robert P. Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the Arlington Township Cemetery, Moville, Iowa, at 5:30 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville. The family will greet friends for lunch at the First Lutheran Fellowship Hall following the funeral until noon.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Minona Emilie Frieda Dettmann was born March 24, 1929, at St. Mary's Hospital in Watertown, Wis., to Arthur W. and Adelheid O. (Klemke) Dettmann of rural Johnson Creek, Wis. She was baptized on April 29, 1929, and confirmed on March 29, 1942, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Watertown, Wis.

She grew up on the family farm, graduated from the eighth grade at the Rock River Valley School and in 1946 graduated from Johnson Creek High School. In 1946 and 1947 she attended Wartburg College and subsequently graduated from the Milwaukee Hospital (Passavant) School of Nursing in 1950. On June 29, 1952, she married Richard E. Zellmer of Moville, Iowa.

Minona entered eternal life on Oct. 17, 2009, after a five-week illness with cancer.

As the oldest of seven children, family became an important part of Minona's life which continued through her commitment to her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

Minona's parents supported her childhood dream of pursuing an education to become a nurse. She dedicated her professional nursing career to caring for patients in hospitals and nursing homes in Milwaukee, Wis., Seguin, Texas, Dubuque, Wausau, Wis., Monticello, West Union and until 1999 at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

She lived out her faith and devotion to the church with many activities, from Luther League as a youth to creating baptismal banners, and even in her later years leading women's circle Bible studies and organizing and baking for the church fellowship hour. Her yeast breads and treats will long be remembered by many. She also loved gardening and was a skilled seamstress.

Survivors include two sons, Mark (Debra Daehn) Zellmer of La Crosse, Wis., and grandchildren, Timothy of St. Paul, Minn., and Bethany of La Crosse, Wis., and Joel (Jodi) Zellmer and granddaughter, Emma, of Liberty Lake, Wash.; two daughters, Kristin Brown (Jacki Ebbeka) of Laramie, Wyo., and grandson Eric (Cambria) Zellmer with great-granddaughter Ava, of Laramie, Wyo., and Heidi Zellmer and grandson Jared Zellmer of Charles City.

Minona is also survived by siblings Joanne (Harry) Ballard of Moneta, Va., Faith Yops of Roanoke, Ind., Paul (Margaret) Dettmann of Dubuque, Timothy (Amy) Dettmann of Johnson Creek, Wis., and Daniel (Shirley) Dettmann of Madison, Wis., and sister-in-law Evelyn Dettmann of Watertown, Wis., along with several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frederick Dettmann; her husband of 40 years, the Rev. Richard Zellmer, and a brother-in-law, Robert Yops Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials be directed to First Lutheran Church or the Good Samaritan Center Endowment for nursing scholarships, both in St. Ansgar.
