AREDALE - Edna Ayers, 102, of Aredale, passed away Thursday (Feb. 28, 2008) at her daughter's home in Aredale.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont, Roy Weber will officiate the service. Burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, rural Bristow.

Visitation will be from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.

Bill Cahalan

FAIRMONT, Minn. - William F. "Bill" Cahalan, 53, of Fairmont, Minn., formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Feb. 27, 2008) in Fairmont of heart failure.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 3, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

A gathering of remembrance will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Fairmont Sentinel.

Memorials may be made to the Bill Cahalan Memorial Fund in care of his family at 21 Mission Drive, Mason City, IA 50401.

Bill was born Aug. 6, 1954, in Mason City, the son of Emerson and Rosemary (McClung) Cahalan. He attended Rockwell-Swaledale Schools and graduated from Newman High School, Mason City, in 1972. He graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, with a B.A. degree in journalism and was employed 21 years as a reporter for the Fairmont Sentinel.

Bill was an avid sports fan, and loved to follow the Iowa State Cyclones. The true love of his life was the writing profession. Bill was passionate about his coverage of the Fairmont community and his life was enriched by his co-workers and the people he met in the stories he wrote.

Survivors include his mother, Rosemary Cahalan, Mason City; one brother, Steve (Sally) Cahalan, La Crosse, Wis.; two sisters, Rosann (Mark) Boyle, Mason City, and Chris (John) Ressler Sr., Mason City; six nephews and nieces, John (Krysia) Ressler Jr., Beach Park, Ill., Tim (Sarah) Ressler, Mason City, Mindy (Joel) Heinz, Cedar Falls, David Boyle, Iowa City, and Susan and Joey Cahalan, La Crosse, Wis.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, Emerson, on July 4, 2006; his maternal grandparents, Chet and Leone McClung; and paternal grandparents, Harry and Hannah Cahalan, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ellsworth G. Helm

POPEJOY - Ellsworth G. Helm, age 91, of Popejoy, died on Thursday (Feb. 28, 2008) at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Popejoy with burial in the Alden Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Surls Funeral Home in Alden.

Full Military Rites will be conducted by the Dows American Legion Post No. 523.

Ellsworth George Helm was born on June 26, 1916, in Plymouth, the son of C. Almond and Tilla (Rossum) Helm. He graduated from the Plymouth High School and was in the Air Corps from 1942 to 1945.

Ellsworth was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Keeney on Aug. 23, 1944, in Plymouth, and later to Eva Bridges on April 13, 1951, in Dows.

Ellsworth was co-owner of Ackerman's Inc. He was a member of the Dows American Legion Post No. 523 and Popejoy United Methodist Church.

Ellsworth is survived by his two daughters, Carol Vanderloop and her husband, Tom, of Alden, and Becky Kalous and her husband, Carroll, of Alden; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Fonda Hickethier of Alden; and son-in-law, Roger Deike of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; a son, Marlyn Hickethier; a daughter, Cheryl Deike; an infant child; and infant twin granddaughters.

Harriet Morgan

THOMPSON - Harriet Morgan, 71, of Thompson, died Tuesday (Feb. 26, 2008) at her home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Mark Decker officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home in Thompson and one hour before the service at the church.

Harriet JoAnn (Judd) Morgan was born Aug. 8, 1936, in Des Moines. She was adopted February 1937 in Corydon by Theo and C.E. Judd. Her family moved to Boone in late 1938.

She was baptized at First Presbyterian Church in Boone.

The family moved to Winnebago County in 1946 and to their farm south of Thompson in 1949.

Harriet attended grade school in Boone, Lake Mills and Thompson and graduated from Thompson High School in 1954.

Harriet was united in marriage to Darrell Morgan on Sept. 18, 1954, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson. They were married 53 years, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2004. Harriet and Darrell lived their entire married life in Thompson. To this union one daughter, Jacquelyn Jo was born.

A few years ago Harriet located her birth family and developed a close friendship with her half-sister, Marilyn Moore, and half-brother, John Jones.

Harriet was a long-time member of Bethany Lutheran Church and Martha Circle. She especially enjoyed joining her birthday club friends. Harriet was best-known for generously taking food to people of Thompson who were sick or grieving, even when she herself was very ill.

Harriet is survived by her husband, Darrell; daughter, Jacquelyn Jo Pattinson; sisters, Marjory (Lowell) Solberg of Forest City, Judith (Robert) Erickson of Centennial, Colo.; half-sister, Marilyn Moore of Grand Junction, Colo.; half-brother, John Jones of Oklahoma City, Okla.; aunts, Clarabelle Judd of Urbana, Ill., and Thelma Tucker of Grand Junction, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson, Matthew Pattinson, and son-in-law, William Pattinson.

Edmund Anderson

RICEVILLE - Edmund Anderson, 92, of Riceville, died Saturday (March 1, 2008) at Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center. A Mass of resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Dee Jay Hillman

ROCK FALLS - Funeral services for Dee Jay Hillman, 67, of 404 Riverside Drive, Mason City (formerly of Marble Rock), will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, at the United Methodist Church, Marble Rock, with Pastor Ashok Patet and Pastor Ed Bard officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m Monday, March 3, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 423 Bradford St., Marble Rock. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church one hour prior to services.

Dee Jay was born May 29, 1940, a son of Darrel and Reka (Arends) Hillman and died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

He attended public school and graduated from RRMR in 1959.

He was united in marriage to Ruth Johnson on June 30, 1959, and to this union were blessed two children Debra and James.

Dee Jay was a semi owner/operator for over 40 years. He was town cop for Marble Rock and also owned the Shine Way Window Washing business in Mason City.

His wife, Ruth, passed away in 1990.

On July 3, 1993, Dee Jay was united in marriage to Kathlene (Dodge) Sauve by the covered bridge in Wilkinson Park in Rock Falls.

He retired from truck driving in 2006 due to multiple health problems.

He enjoyed having family and friends over for Sunday dinners and especially making and serving his homemade ice cream. He also enjoyed working with James at the farm next door for Chuck Boyd.

Dee Jay is survived by his wife, Kathlene, of Rock Falls; his son, James Hillman of Marble Rock; three step-sons, Curt (Mardi) Sauve, Kent Sauve, all of Mason City, Kendall Sauve; one stepdaughter, Kaylene (Chris ) Ahrens of Rock Falls; one sister, Linda (Nolan "Red") Taylor of Milton, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Carma Hillman of Marble Rock, Marjorie (Everett) Showalter of Osage, Kathryn (John) Deets of Mason City, Bonnie Gail Corkery of Neosho, Mo.; brothers-in-law, Alvin (Susan) Klink of Marble Rock, David (Linda) Johnson of Blue Springs, Mo., Dick (Barb) Dodge of Rock Falls, Bill (Bonnie) Dodge of Nora Springs, Jim (Delores) Dodge of Mason City; one granddaughter, Natalie Hillman (Septer) of Mason City, four step-granddaughters, Ashley (Zach) Davis, Brigitte Sauve, Mikayla Ahrens and Paige Sauve; two step-grandsons, Matt Sauve and Tegan Ahrens; one great-grandson, Ezrehn Degen-Septer; two step-great-grandsons, Jacob and Ethan Davis; nieces and nephews, Stephanie (Alan) Lowery, Tony Nash, Holly (Bob) Schindler, Heidi (Matt) Rooney, Dana (Callie) Hillman, Darci Hillman (Fiancee Jake Mallo), Mike (Vivian) Klink, Chelley (Adam) Parks, Leroy (Crystal) Klink, Rhonda (Jeremy) Stephens, Naomi (Billy) Hagler, Mandy Johnson, Kylee (Luke) Stewart, Isaac Johnson, numerous nieces, nephews, friends and granddog, "Scobby."

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth, in 1990, his daughter Deb, Grarup, in 1994, his sister, Nancy Klink, in 1976, his brother, Danny, in 1992, his parents, his father and mother-in-law, Lester and Marie Johnson, his mother-in-law, Grace Dodge and two brothers-in-law, S. Lee Nash and Jerry Lee Dodge.

Bernice Irene Nannenga

MASON CITY - Bernice Irene Nannenga, 87, of Mason City, died Friday (Feb. 29, 2008) at the Muse-Norris-Hospice-Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 3, at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Nelson and the Rev. Jeni Bohls officiating. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel and also one hour prior to the service at St. James Lutheran Church.

Bernice Irene Ball, daughter of John Wesley Ball and Elma Ethel (Harris) Ball was born May 30, 1920, in Livermore, Humboldt County.

Bernice graduated Ventura High School in 1938, then attended Ellsworth Junior College for one year and graduated from Mason City Junior College in June 1940. She taught school near Duncan and south of Ventura.

She married Jake Nannenga Aug. 10, 1942, in St. John's Lutheran Church, northwest of Ventura, by the Rev. Walter Wolfram. They had been married 40 years.

They farmed north of Ventura, Thornton and Klemme, southeast of Clear Lake and northeast of Osage. She and her husband spent eight winters at Zapata, Texas. Jake passed away March 27, 1983, 12 days after returning home from Texas that winter.

Bernice moved from the farm into Osage on Nov. 14, 1986, and then to Mason City, July 11, 1992, to make her home with her daughter, Marie.

She was very proud of her family and enjoyed having them over for meals, visits and afternoon tea. She always greeted you with a warm, friendly smile. She enjoyed canning all the fruits and vegetables from her garden and had lots of flowers in her yard. She liked sitting in the backyard swing watching the birds and animals.

She went to the Mason City Senior Center every day to help, visit and eat with her friends.

As a resident at Heritage, she was always busy walking, folding clothes, helping with the garden and visiting with others. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Bernice is survived by her daughter, Marie Nannenga, Mason City; son, Christ (Leila) Nannenga, Thornton; daughter-in-law, Mary Nannenga, Osage; granddaughters, Jacqueline (Mark) Hawley, Fernald and Elizabeth Nannenga, Thornton; great-granddaughters, Beverly and Katherine Hawley, Fernald; sister, Eunice Olthoff, Buffalo Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jake Nannenga; son Karl Nannenga in 1999, brother John "Bud" Ball; sister Elizabeth "Bettie" Krogstad, brother, Dale Franklin Ball in infancy and half sister Ruth Babcock.

Edmund Anderson

RICEVILLE - Edmund Anderson, 92, of Riceville, passed away on Saturday (March 1, 2008) at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center.

Edmund, son of Andrew John and Anna Diederich Anderson, was born on January 30, 1916, in Mitchell County, Iowa. He graduated from Riceville High School in 1933.

He was united in marriage to Agnes Wagner on Oct. 27, 1941, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. Edmund chose the family farm and dairy herds as his life's work.

Edmund was noted for his arrowhead collection, over 110 of them, found on his farm. He built bluebird houses for the area, and maintained the bike trail that passed through his farm. He enjoyed bicycling in later years, as well as cutting wood, cross-country skiing, golfing, playing cards and seeing the countryside and crops. Edmund was a retired farmer.

Survivors include: three sons, Robert and Ruth Anderson of Englewood, Colo., Joe and Barbara Anderson of Bloomington, Ind., and Tom and Judy Anderson of Sterling, Ill.; three daughters, Mary and Mark Hittner of New Bern, N.C., Doris and Jerome Gacke of Central City, Neb., and Jane and Stephen Dratz of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren;

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Agnes in 1999, four brothers, Carl, John, Pete, and William; and two sisters, Helen Minnis and Margaret Swan.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. followed by a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday an hour prior to the Mass.

Virginia Rose Kliven was born in Mason City on September 21, 1933, to Jacob P. and Stella M. (Brown) Thompson. Virginia received her education in Mason City. She had been a lifelong resident of Mason City.

Throughout her life she had been a homemaker and was also employed as a waitress at the "One Minute Lunch" restaurant in Mason City for a short time.

Virginia was an avid fan of NASCAR and enjoyed watching motor sports on television.

She will be best remembered as a person who was family-oriented and very giving and charitable.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Virginia's life are her three children, Kevin E. Kliven of Mason City, Terry L. Kliven of Rockford, Ill., and Vicky D. Thompson of Rockford, Ill.; two sisters, Anna Meyers of Mason City and Cora (Don) Miller of Ralston, Neb.; two grandchildren, Amy and Matthew Kliven; great grandson, Justin Curtis and special friend, Lou Cota of Mason City.

Cunningham, Larry

Larry Cunningham, 79, of Marshalltown, longtime Iowa State Trooper, died Saturday (March 1, 2008) at the home of Roger Freiboth and Cristin Cunningham while in his family's loving care and the Iowa River Hospice.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marshalltown, with Father Jim Miller officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home, 1209 Iowa Ave. W, in Marshalltown, with a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Born on Feb. 16, 1929, in Mason City, he was the son of John and Regina (Lang) Cunningham. He graduated from high school in Mason City, and attended Iowa State University and Drake University. He served our country honorably in the United States Army.

On June 19, 1952, in Mason City, he was united in marriage to Mariann Deming.

Larry was a police officer for the city of Mason City until becoming a State Trooper for the Iowa State Highway Patrol in 1956. He retired in 1994.

Mr. Cunningham was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church; Iowa State Trooper's Association helped in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Little League and enjoyed traveling, gardening, photography and his family.

Following retirement, Larry moved to California and returned to the area 18 months ago.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Terry Cunningham of Iowa City, Sharon (Harold) Foulk of LeGrand, Casey Cunningham, Guy Cunningham (Patricia Wengert) of Des Moines, Todd Cunningham of Des Moines, Jay (Beth) Cunningham of Richmond, Va., Julie (Mike) Ellis of Marshalltown and Cristin Cunningham (Roger Freiboth) of rural Marshalltown; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Janet Kelly of Mason City and Ruthann Walljasper of Trenton, Mo.

In death he has rejoined his parents and wife Mariann. Also Patricia Cunningham and brother Roger Cunningham.

MASON CITY - Rachel Marie Djuren, 91, of Mason City, died Sunday (March 2, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Rachel Marie Djuren was born on July 4, 1916 in Northwood, the daughter of Ole and Ragna (Nelson) Kjerland.

She was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

She graduated from Northwood High School in 1934 and then attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City and worked for Gilpin Realty in Northwood.

She moved to Mason City when she married Elwood "Lefty" Detra. After his death, she worked for Kramers Hatchery.

She was then married to Alec "Bud" Djuren and she later worked at Bud's Hydraulic Shop.

She enjoyed craft work, crocheting, gardening, and taking bus trips. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren during the holidays. She had a good friend in Randy Hill, who helped with household chores and she loved their talks sitting around the dining room table.

Rachel is survived by her grandchildren, Steven McReynolds of Duluth, Minn., Sue Kent and husband Tim of Minnetonka, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Danny and Kendall M. Kent of Minnetonka, Minn.; sister, Doris Lumley, of Mason City; and many special friends and neighbors; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Elwood "Lefty" Detra and Alec "Bud" Djuren; brothers, Harold Kjerland, Merlin Kjerland, Reginald Kjerland and Donald Kjerland.

MASON CITY - Gilbert C. Johnson, 91, of Mason City, died Saturday (March 1, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Gilbert was born on March 13, 1916, in Britt, the son of John H. and Annie M. (Baker) Johnson. He attended school in rural Hancock County, and attended through eighth grade.

He enlisted in the Army on April 3, 1942 in Des Moines. He was in the 3rd Army Division and was part of the second wave onto Omaha Beach. He also served in the Battle of the Bulge and served under General George S. Patton. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1945, in Fort Knox, Ky.

After his return from the service, he returned to Britt and worked for Fred Theil and drove gas truck until going to work for Clarence Dahl in his service station. He was married to Dorothy Mulert on Nov. 18, 1946, in Britt. They moved to Mason City in 1957 and he went to work for Armour's until his retirement in 1982.

Gilbert loved working in his vegetable and flower garden; he enjoyed dancing, playing cards, watching Western movies, fishing, hunting, and camping in his younger years with his family. He also had a passion for horses. Family was very important to him and he enjoyed the time he spent with them. He also enjoyed spending time at Pro's Sandwich Shop for coffee with his friends. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge and also a 50-year member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

He is survived by his son, Timothy Paul Johnson and wife, Sue, of Erlanger, Ky.; daughter, Karen Kay Johnson, of Mason City; grandchildren, Chris Johnson and wife, Deb, of Rochester, Minn. and Scott Johnson and wife, Cassie, of Lomira, Wis.; great-grandson, Matthew James Johnson; sisters-in-law, June Krammerer and husband Leo of Cedar Rapids, Rita Berndt of Cedar Rapids, Ida Mulert of Dubuque, and Rita Mulert of Dubuque; cousin, Eva Weiner, of Bancroft; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy Johnson in 1993; siblings, Herbert, Clyde, Frank, and Homer Johnson; sisters-in-law, Marcella, Mabel, Helen and Ruth Johnson; infant son, Ronald John Johnson; and great-granddaughter, Natalie Marie Johnson.

Donald L. Mix

Mr. Mix, 79, of Plainview, Minn., died early Saturday morning (March 1, 2008) at his home in rural Plainview after a brief illness with cancer.

Donald LeRoy Mix was born on Aug. 28, 1928, in Mason City, to Richard and Martha (Kinnan) Mix. He attended Mason City area schools. On June 19, 1948, he married Beverly Brocker in Plymouth, Iowa. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954. Don worked for 43 years at Hermanson Dairy, later Carnation Dairy, then it became Swiss Valley in Iowa.

They lived in Mason City until 1961 when they moved to Plymouth, until 1963, when they moved to Waterloo, and in 1980, they moved to Dubuque, until he retired in 1989. They returned to Waterloo after he retired until July 2007, when they moved to rural Plainview, Minn.

Don was a member of the United Methodist Church and Fraternal Order of Eagles both in Waterloo and the American Legion in Plymouth, Iowa. He enjoyed vegetable farming with his in-laws, going camping, bowling, playing golf and fishing with family.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Mix, of Plainview, Minn.; two daughters, Susan (Dallas) Tesmer, of Plainview, Minn., and Pamela Mix, of Newton; one son, Gregory Mix, of Waterloo; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Grace Schukei Dawson, 104, of Waterloo, died Saturday morning (March 1, 2008) at her home of natural causes.

She was born March 3, 1903, in Easton, Ill., the daughter of George and Susannah Furrer Athey. She married Clarence Schukei on Nov. 21, 1923, and they were later divorced. She then married Warren Dawson on Oct. 9, 1968, in Pauma Valley, Calif. He preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1999, after they moved back to Waterloo.

She is survived by a son, Robert (Elizabeth) Schukei of Mason City; a daughter, Janice Hahn (Dr. Gilbert) Glasson of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Steven (Sue) Schukei and Bill Schukei, both of Mason City; Ellen (Michael) Paul of Iowa City, John (Keeley) Schukei of Great Falls, Mont., Anne (David) Sargent and Sue (John) Hawn of Cedar Rapids, and Katy (David) Rohle of Waterloo; and one step-granddaughter, Monda (Brendt) Linderman, of Mason City; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters.

Jeffrey William Doyle, the son of William and Connie (Forthun) Doyle, was born Nov. 30, 1961, at Albert Lea, Minn. He was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center. He attended Albert Lea schools and graduated from Buffalo Center-Rake High School in 1980. During his high school years, he worked on the farm for Howard and Elaine Michaelson.

Following high school, he continued his education at NIACC in Mason City. After college, he was employed by CEI Enterprise in Cedar Rapids and later at Iowa Mold and Tooling in Garner. On June 18, 1983, he married LeAnn Hagenson at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center. They lived in Miller until moving to their current home northwest of Garner where they were raising their boys, Eric (20) and Drew (15).

In 1989, Jeff began his own business, Doyle's Welding and Repair. He enjoyed camping, snowmobiling and visiting with his customers. He also enjoyed taking a dear friend to appointments and going to the annual Windstock Country Music Festival at Winsted, Minn. Special times for Jeff included teaching his boys his trade of welding and seeing them enjoy four-wheeling, snowmobiling and fishing.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. Jeff served for many years on the Hancock County Zoning Board and was currently on the Hancock County Conservation Board.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, LeAnn, of Garner; sons, Eric of Mason City and Drew of Garner; a sister, Kim (Duke) Powell, of Mason City; four half-brothers, Chad Doyle of Buffalo Center, Cory (Erica) Doyle of Ireton and Ryan and Kyle Doyle of Minneapolis, Minn.; his parents-in-law, Keith and Shirley Hagenson of Buffalo Center; sisters-in-law, Sheryl (Kim) Davids of Buffalo Center and Vicki (Rodney) Wubben of Buffalo Center; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents; a half-brother, Brandon Doyle; paternal grandparents, Richard "Claire" and Helen Doyle; maternal grandfather, Oral Forthun; maternal grandmother, Hazel Forthun Berhow; and maternal step-grandfather, Bud Berhow.

Ethelyn Lucille "Eppie" Opel

CLEAR LAKE - Ethelyn Lucille "Eppie" Opel, 93, of Carlsbad, Calif., formerly Clear Lake, died peacefully on Saturday (Feb. 23, 2008) after a beautiful San Diego sunset at 9:30 p.m. from complications of a stroke after five days of hospice care at her retirement community where she was surrounded by friends and relatives. She was never in pain during the last days of her life.

Funeral services will be noon Monday, March 10, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Scott Wilson of the Christian Church, of Clear Lake, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Ethelyn Lucille (Eppie) Opel was born Jan. 28, 1915, in Emmetsburg, where her father farmed. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to a farm near the town of Rowan. Ethelyn started to school in Rowan. When she was 10 years old, her family moved to Mason City, where she graduated from High School in 1932.

In 1937, Ethelyn married Fred Opel from Clear Lake, where she and her husband lived for 25 years. They had one son George Frederick ("Fritz").

Ethelyn was very active in the First Christian Church of Clear Lake, PTA, Music Mothers and various other organizations.

She moved to California in 1963 after her husband passed away with son, Fritz. During the last five years she lived a wonderful life at La Costa Glen retirement community in Carlsbad, Calif., where she was very active in the social programs, played bridge, and developed a unique interest and skill in arts and crafts.

She is survived by her son, Fritz, in San Diego, Calif.; three grandsons, Eric Opel of Seattle, Wash., Christopher Opel of Niederuzwil, Switzerland, and Jordan Opel in San Diego, Calif. Other surviving family members include two brothers, Donald Mathiason of Rowan and Gerald Mathiason of Redondo Beach, Calif., and four sisters, Carole Armentrout of Diamond Bar, Calif., Alice Markonis of Oceanside, Calif., Janet Kennedy of Indian Wells, Calif., and Phyllis Moore of Temecula, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and one brother.

She was ready for this. A poem in her final possessions titled "I'm Free" began, "Don't grieve for me for now I'm free, I'm following the path God laid for me." She was 93 years old.

MASON CITY - Memorial services will be held for Johanna Marie Van Houten, 95, of Mason City, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
