Mattox, Mary Melinda

BURNSVILLE, Minn. -Mary Melinda Mattox (Hammer) was born Jan. 11, 1943, to Gladys and Max Hammer in Independence, Mo. She was 65 when she passed away on Monday (Dec. 8, 2008) at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, ending her courageous battle with cancer.

Mary and her younger brother, James, grew up in Lamoni, Iowa, where their father ran a radio and electric business for many years. She graduated from Lamoni High School in 1961, attended Graceland College for two years and finished her education at the University of Iowa with a degree in speech therapy.

In 1965, a former school mate who was serving in the U.S. Navy began writing Mary, and she wrote back. After months of letter writing, they fell in love. While on leave, Edward Joshua "Josh" Mattox proposed to Mary. She accepted and, shortly after, they went on their first date. They were married in Lamoni on June 25, 1966.

Throughout their nearly 43 years of marriage, Mary and Josh raised two children, Melinda and Mark. The family lived in several Midwestern towns, including Truro, Iowa, Faribault, Minn., Carlisle, Iowa, Mankato, Minn., and Mason City, Iowa.

After their children graduated high school, the couple moved to Cloquet, Minn., then to North Ridgeville, Ohio, and finally settled in Burnsville, Minn., where they have lived since 1994.

The sum of Mary's life is more than just dates and places. She had a huge heart, a quick temper that never lasted and the most amazing laugh. She loved her three precious grandchildren and during her illness, their visits brought her strength. Her love of animals was evidenced by the string of family pets that always liked her best. Her compassion led her to years of volunteer work at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. Her friendly nature and genuine interest in others made her the heart of her neighborhood on Barbara Lane. Her caring nature, her lovely voice and her amazing cooking made her a wonderful mother. Her fiery spirit and great beauty, both inside and out, made her the love of her husband's life.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Max and Gladys Hammer, her sister-in-law and close friend Barbara Nesbitt; her aunts, June Cochran (Mortimore), Mildred Weddle (Mortimore), Florence Mortimore, Lena Hulse (Mortimore) and her uncle Ron Mortimore.

She is survived by her husband, Josh; her brother, Jim; her daughter, Melinda; her son, Mark and his wife, Angie; her grandchildren, Madeline, Grace and Emerson; her aunts, Barbara Shipman (Hammer) and Beverly Ryken (Hammer); and her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be a remembrance gathering at her son's home on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008. Her ashes will be interred at Rose Hill Cemetery in Lamoni, Iowa in the spring.

A memorial fund in Mary's name has been established at SmileTrain.org. To donate, visit the site and select Online Fundraising.

Antoinette Salone was born one of ten children to Thomas and Mary (Gracon) Kovachevich on the family farm in Bayfield County, Wisconsin on Dec. 16, 1916. She achieved a high honor in her day by graduating from De Padua High School in Ashland, Wisconsin.

She was employed at the Ashland Paper Mills and worked as a waitress on several of the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. During her work, she met a commercial fisherman as a customer named John but known as Art. After a period of time they cemented their friendship and love by becoming husband and wife in 1941 in Michigan. To this union was born two daughters. She remembers the time her soon to be husband took her in a small boat during a storm to visit her relatives. That's probably what made her a feisty woman.

Toni was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. During the course of her life she made many visits to her family on the southern shores of Lake Superior and loved to be with her family and friends at the lake. Her husband was an avid hunter and fisherman and they spent many enjoyable times fishing and entertaining the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the North Woods of Wisconsin and Minnesota, especially at Gun and Pepin Lakes.

She served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for several years. She enjoyed the outdoors in her flower gardens, sewing, playing cards and taking short trips with her family and senior citizen friends. In her later years she made eleven double wedding ring quilts for her family. She was very inquisitive and enjoyed finding out facts and how things worked. She was a Hawkeye fan.
