FOREST CITY - Tex O. Borg, 76, of Forest City, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City with Pastor Doug Snyder officiating. Burial will be at First Baptist Cemetery in Forest City with graveside military rites provided by Forest City American Legion Post 121.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City and one hour prior to service at the church.

CHARLES CITY -Velma Murphy, 88, of Charles City, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 2008) at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Velma Murphy will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City with Pastor William Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

FOREST CITY - Tex O. Borg, 76, of Forest City, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Tex O. Borg was born in Forest City, on Dec. 7, 1931, the son of Lennea and Pearl (Lunstrom) Borg. He was baptized and was a member of First Baptist Church. He and his brothers, Eble and Kermit, sang many trios at church with their mom accompanying them.

Tex attended country school in Ellington Township and graduated from Forest City High School in 1949.

He served for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and farmed with his brother, Eble, until he passed away.

On Nov. 2, 1957, Tex was united in marriage to Iletha Kamp. To this union were born two children, Dale Borg and Teresa Borg.

Tex worked at Winnebago Industries for 15 years. At the present, he was farming with his son east of Forest City. He enjoyed his grandchildren, working on the farm, cutting trees and eating out with family. He loved going to tractor sales and recently spent a couple days at Heritage Park with his son, enjoying the "old technology" that he grew up with as a boy.

He is survived by his son, Dale Borg and his wife,Tanya, of Forest City and daughter, Teresa Borg, of Forest City; three grandchildren, Anthony Otis, Andrew Frazee and Mellisa Borg. Also surviving are cousins, aunts and his former wife, Iletha.

Tex was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kermit and Eble Borg.

Ervin, Jeanne I.  
 
IOWA CITY - Jeanne I. (Riepe) Suter Ervin, 92, of Iowa City, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 26, 2008) in Coralville.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at the Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave, Iowa City.

Jeanne was born in Centerville, on Feb. 7, 1916, to Edgar and Norma Riepe. She grew up in Centerville with her three siblings. Jeanne began studying the piano at age four and played the piano her entire life.

Jeanne graduated from Drake University in 1936 with a degree in English and taught high school English for two years in rural Iowa until she married. She married William (Bud) Suter in August of 1939 and they settled in Mason City where Bud coached high school and Junior Legion sports and then became a sports announcer for the KGLO television station.

Jeanne was active in the church choir and produced local drama productions. All five of their children were born in Mason City.

The family moved to Iowa City in 1955 when Bud joined the University of Iowa Athletic Department. Jeanne was a substitute teacher for many years in the Iowa City public school system and ended her career as a teacher at the U of I Hospital Schools.

Bud passed away in March of 1974. Jeanne was remarried in 1977 to Robert Ervin. They travelled extensively in the U.S. and Canada and enjoyed 18 years together until his death in 1995.

Jeanne's interests included U of I sports, music, duplicate bridge, reading, and crossword puzzles. She was a long standing member of P.E.O. The most important focus of her life was family. She was adored by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home was the center of gatherings throughout the years; all were welcome.

Jeanne was pre-deceased by her parents, two siblings, two husbands, her daughter-in-law Lisa, and one grandson, Andrew.

She leaves behind her children John Suter (Jedn), Bill Suter, Cynthia Maas (Ed), Steve Suter (Paula), and Tom Suter (Anne). Her grandchildren, Michael, Kerry, Sarah, Beth, Tom, Anne, Molly, and Amy will miss their loving "Gaga." Jeanne also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Jeanne lived her almost 93 years with a love of life, people, and a wonderful sense of humor. Her many, many friends will attest to her spirit of love, acceptance, and kindness. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

The family wishes to give special thanks to the hospice group who helped care for Jeanne. They are especially grateful to Mary, Paula, and Polly for their loving attention.

In lieu of flowers the family requests any memorial donations be sent to Iowa City Hospice.

MASON CITY - Elmer J. Fritz, 93, of Mason City, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 2008) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, where a rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m.

Elmer J. Fritz was born on March 2, 1915 at Mason City, the son of Edward and Theresa (Pfieffer) Fritz. He attended school at Holy Family and was a 1934 graduate of Holy Family High School. On Nov. 11, 1940, he was united in marriage to Helen L. Garvey at Manly.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church from the time it was located on Second St. N.W. until the present.

Elmer served in the CCC Camp where he helped build the tower at Pilot Knob State Park, near Forest City. He later worked at Decker's Meat Packing and Lehigh Cement Company, Mason City. Elmer served as a firefighter on the Mason City Fire Department from 1939 until retiring, in 1970.

He then joined the Iowa DOT, as a materials inspector, he retired in 1985.

His hobbies included gardening, hunting, and fishing. He especially enjoyed listening to his favorite music - polkas.

Elmer is survived by three daughters, Patti Gribben, of Mason City, Kathy (Mick) Haes, of Minneapolis, Minn., Mary (Jim) Myklestad, of Mason City; a son, John Fritz, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Jerry Gribben, Mason City, Theresa Blume-Thole, Cottage Grove, Minn., Steven Haes, Lakeville, Minn., Shelley Rhymers, Richfield, Minn., Laurie Tezak, Des Moines, Lisa Johnson, Falls Church, Va.; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Healey, of Laguna Hills, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Edna, Marie, and Loretta; four brothers, Emmett, Paul, Wilfred and Joseph; and a son in-law, Pat Gribben.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Tom Healey, chaplain of Hospice officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and again one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Jenison, Marlin P.  
 
URBANDALE - Marlin Paul Jenison, 72, passed from this life on Saturday (Nov. 29, 2008) at the Kavanagh Hospice in Des Moines. In agreement with Marlin's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.

A celebration of Marlin's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, at Meredith Drive Reformed Church in Des Moines, of which he was a member. Burial of cremated remains will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, at McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale.

Marlin was born the son of Paul and Maxine Nordschow Jenison on July 15, 1936, on a farm near Goodell. He was a 1955 graduate of Belmond High School in Belmond. On Sept. 9, 1956, Marlin married Ardith E. Johnson in Belmond and their marriage was blessed with three children: Teresa "Terri," David and Jolynn "Jody." He served with the United States Air Force from 1956-1960. For nearly 30 years, Marlin was employed with UNISYS, formerly UNIVAC/Sperry Corporation. For several years, he was also employed with Menards and Pioneer Hybrid.

Marlin loved spending time with his former co-workers and friends over coffee. Two of Marlin's interests were planes and sharing World War II history. He was also an avid fisherman and bowler and enjoyed watching old movies on T.V. especially John Wayne Westerns.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Ardith Jenison, of Urbandale; one daughter, Terri Leick and her husband, Don, of Minneapolis, Minn.; Dave Schrage of South Bend, Ind.; sister, Meredith Ersland and her husband Gary of Clarion; sister-in-law, Lois Jenison, of Belmond; and five grandchildren: Jordan Leick, Taylor Leick, Christopher Leick, Kaitlyn Schrage and Brianne Schrage.

Marlin was preceded into eternal life by his parents; brother, Merrill Jenison; son, David Jenison; and one daughter, Jody Schrage.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel located at 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines IA 50322.

In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to either Hospice of Central Iowa or Meals for the Hungry Fund at Meredith Drive Reformed Church.

SHEFFIELD - Gary Eugene Meints, 51, of Sheffield, died at his home on Saturday (Nov. 29, 2008) surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Zion Reformed Church, southwest of Sheffield, with Pastor Art Zewert officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Reformed Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Gary Meints was born on Aug. 9, 1957, to Harold and Mary (Heuberger) Meints. He graduated from Sheffield-Chapin High School in 1975.

On Sept. 23, 1978, he married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Kristi Samuelson. To this union was born four daughters.

Gary enjoyed golfing and fishing, along with many other sports. He was passionate about singing, writing, and playing his own music. He composed and published five gospel CDs and several secular CDs. His family was so special to him. He had a great sense of humor and was known to tease from time to time.

Gary was a lifelong member of Zion Reformed Church where he served in many active areas of the church. Gary also enjoyed performing and raising money for Relay for Life.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kristi, of Sheffield; daughters, Jami (Jesse) Peters, of Mountain Lake, Minn.; Jill, Joelle, and Jaclyn Meints of Sheffield; granddaughter, Kiana Peters of Mountain Lake, Minn; his parents, Harold and Mary Meints of Sheffield; sisters, Judy (Dennis) Crom of Sheffield; Linda (Steve) Wells of Clear Lake; Kate (Bob) Shreckengost of Sheffield; mother-in-law, Margaret Bolk, of Sheffield; sister-in-law, Karen (Dan) Weltzin, of Brandon; along with several nieces, nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Gary is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents along with other relatives and friends.

KANAWHA - Jennie Dirksen Goeman DeWaard, 101, a resident of the Kanawha Community Home for more than six years, formerly of Belmond, died Tuesday (Dec. 2, 2008) at the Kanawha Community Home.

A public memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Wright Christian Reformed Church, Kanawha, with the Rev. Chuck Walton officiating. Private family burial will take place on Friday morning at Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery east of Belmond.

Elmer served in a CCC Camp where he helped build the tower at Pilot Knob State Park, near Forest City. He later worked at Decker's Meat Packing and Lehigh Cement Co., Mason City. Elmer served as a firefighter on the Mason City Fire Department from 1939 until retiring in 1970.

He then joined the Iowa DOT as a materials inspector. He retired in 1985.

His hobbies included gardening, hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed listening to his favorite music - polkas.

Elmer is survived by three daughters, Patti Gribben of Mason City, Kathy (Mick) Haes of Minneapolis, Minn., Mary (Jim) Myklestad of Mason City; a son, John Fritz of Mason City; six grandchildren, Jerry Gribben of Mason City, Theresa Blume-Thole of Cottage Grove, Minn., Steven Haes of Lakeville, Minn., Shelley Rhymers of Richfield, Minn., Laurie Tezak of Des Moines, and Lisa Johnson of Falls Church, Va.; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Healey of Laguna Hills, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; three sisters, Edna, Marie, and Loretta; four brothers, Emmett, Paul, Wilfred and Joseph; and a son-in-law, Pat Gribben.

MASON CITY - Elizabeth "Betty" C. Funk, 82, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, died Sunday evening (Nov. 30, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services for Betty will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Mason City, with the Rev. Tom Healey, hospice chaplain, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.today at the funeral home and again one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Elizabeth Catherine was born one of 12 children to Jacob and Louise "Schmidt" Funk on March 24, 1925, in Mason City. She was baptized at Calvary Lutheran Church and later joined Trinity Lutheran Church with her mother. She was a happy person all of her life and could often be heard singing spiritual songs from morning 'til night. Betty had been employed at the North Iowa Vocational Center and Affordables Thrift Store.

She loved playing cards and was very proficient at solitaire and kings corners. She collected stuffed animals and doing her puzzles. She did many items of "fancy work embroidery" for family and friends.

She played bingo every week and looked forward to visiting with her family and friends, especially the nephews and nieces, and always had open arms for all the babies. Her special time with family was at Christmas each year and at her 80th birthday party. She lived at Heritage Care Center for more than 20 years where everyone was her friend.

Those thankful in having Betty as part of their lives include her two remaining sisters, Mary Jane (Jesse) Allen of Plymouth and Regina (Bob) Ackerman of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Frank (Marjorie) Funk and Frederick (Marion) Funk, all of Mason City; her sister-in-law, Margaret Funk of Mason City; and many many nieces and nephews.

Her parents, one sister, Rosa Paula Green; six brothers, Albert, Herman, Jake, Phillip, Joseph, William and several sister-in-laws preceded her in death.

MASON CITY - Dorothy A. Madson Haxton, 86, of Mason City, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 2008) at the IOOF Home.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Kathy Graves of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Dorothy Haxton Memorial Fund.

Dorothy was born Oct. 18, 1922, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., the daughter of Frederick and Gladys (Koeshall) Laemmerhirt. She attended country school in Wisconsin. She moved to Mason City in 1951. Dorothy was married to Victor Madson until his death in 1978.

On June 7, 1981, she married Donovan Haxton Sr. at the Little Brown Church. She worked for Fareway for 25 years before retiring in 1984. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was a circle member.

She enjoyed plants, traveling the world and making lefse. She had a certificate stating she was the "Master Lefse Maker." She also enjoyed sewing, cooking, dancing at the Surf, bowling, playing bingo and golf (hunting for balls).

She is survived by her children, Larry Madson and wife, Carmen, of Mason City, and Gene Madson and wife, Bobbe, of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Dana Hettinger and husband, Joe, of Round Lake, Ill., Chris Madson and fiancee, Angie, of Blue Earth, Minn., Kory Madson and wife, Kelli, of Urbandale and Kelly of Clear Lake; two great-grandchildren, Ben of Urbandale and Nick of Blue Earth, Minn.; and one brother, William Frederick Laemmerhirt of Flagstaff, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Victor Madson, in 1978; her second husband, Donovan Haxton, in 2002; and one sister, Bernice Hansen.

WATERLOO - Robert G. "Bob" McKee, 69, of Waterloo, died Friday (Nov. 28, 2008) in a care center in Independence, Mo.

He was born Nov. 30, 1938, in Sheffield, son of Willie and Vena McKee. He was the beloved husband of Eileen L. (Dawson) McKee. They observed 41 years of marriage on Aug. 6 of this year.

Bob enjoyed working in agricultural sales. He was an avid gardener and also enjoyed fishing, bowling and golfing. Bob had served in the Iowa National Guard. He was an active member of Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church.

Bob often entertained friends and family with his jokes and witty humor. But above all, his family was the most important part of his life.

Survivors include his wife; son, Kyle McKee (Susan); daughter, Heather Castellano (Carlo); and granddaughter, Madison McKee, all of Blue Springs, Mo.; two brothers, Harold McKee and Marv (DeAlta) McKee, both of Chapin; two sisters, Irene Anonson of Charles City and Lorraine (Robert) Schrock of Lawrence, Kan.; and a sister-in-law, Lola McKee of Charles City.

Preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Wilbur McKee.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church in Waterloo with burial following at 3 p.m. West Fork Cemetery in Sheffield.

OSAGE - Lester Selvig, 93, of Osage died Sunday (Nov. 30, 2008) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Lester was born Sept. 7, 1915, on a farm in Marshall County, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Borghild (Haugen) Selvig.

He married Elnora Meling on Jan. 31, 1938, in Marshalltown. They farmed in Marshall County and moved to Osage in 1954. They farmed near Osage, retiring in 1977. Lester was a member of Sons of Norway and Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school.

He enjoyed fishing, attending farm sales, playing cards and his coffee group at Stang's Hardware. He also enjoyed his trip to Norway.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Lester is survived by three daughters, Elaine (Wayne) Smolik of Osage, Eileen (Ewald) Ehlke Jr. of St. Ansgar and Dawn (James) Lackore of Osage; one son, Robert (Mary Ann) Selvig of Osage; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ida Usken of Colo, Iowa.

KANAWHA - Jennie Dirksen Goeman DeWaard, 101, formerly of Belmond, most recently a resident of the Kanawha Community Home where she had been living for more than six years, died Tuesday (Dec. 2, 2008) at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Jennie was under the loving care of the staff and also in the last days of her life additional care was given by Hospice of North Iowa.

Public visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 4, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E., Belmond. A private burial will take place on Friday morning at the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery east of Belmond.

Public memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the the Wright Christian Reformed Church, 1730 130th St., Kanawha, with the Rev. Chuck Walton officiating.

The family suggests those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in Jennie's name consider the Kanawha Community Home, or a charity of their own choice.

Jennie Borchers Dirksen was born June 24, 1907, to Dirk and Yettie (Pals) Dirksen in Alexander,, Iowa. She was one of six children to bless this union. Jennie was baptized and made her profession of faith at Alexander Reformed Church. She was educated in Windsor Township.

On Feb. 13, 1930, Jennie married Rammer Goeman and they moved to their farm east of Belmond. The couple had two children, Lyola Logterman and Richard. They were active members of the Immanuel Reformed Church where Jennie taught Sunday school. Rammer died Jan. 31, 1951.

In 1958, Jennie married Joe DeWaard. She moved to Kanawha where they were members of the Wright Christian Reformed Church. They lived in Denver in the winter and enjoyed traveling around the United States.

Jennie and Joe were active in receiving funds and planning for the Kanawha Community Home. They and their grandchildren helped with planting trees in its yard. The two of them helped tend the yard and gardens during the early years. Joe died in 1981.

Jennie continued to live in Kanawha and Denver until moving to the Bel-Air Condos in Belmond in 1994. She remained actively involved in the farm management details until she was in her early 90s. She always enjoyed rides to check on the crops.

Jennie is survived by her daughter, Lyola Logterman and her husband, Earl, of Denver, Colo.; and son, Richard Goeman and his wife, Carol, of Tuscon, Ariz, Also surviving is her brother Dirk Dirksen of Alexander; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; daughter-in-law, Donna; and four siblings, who lived into their 90s.

Lovell Daniel Diddy, 96, of Ridge Manor, Fla., died Nov. 25, 2008, at Haven Hospice, Gainesville, Fla.

He is survived by a son, Gary Diddy and wife, Janet, of Arvada, Colo.; a daughter, Kathleen Tomson and husband, Farol, of Gainesville, Fla.; five grandchildren: Sara Diddy Colvard and husband, John, of Centerburg, Ohio, Hugh Diddy and wife, Eve, of New York City, N.Y., Farol L. Tomson, of Dallas, Texas, Elizabeth Tomson Sergile and husband, Alain, of Madrid, Spain, and Eric Tomson and wife, Kelly, of Richmond, Va.; seven great-grandchildren: Jake, Chloe and Sophia Colvard of Centerburg, Ohio, Tessa, Sebastien and Ian Sergile of Madrid, Spain, and Samantha Tomson of Richmond, Va.; and one sister, Marjory Orr, of Council Bluffs.

He was born Dec. 17, 1911, to D. Walter and Ida Diddy, in Washington Township, Iowa. He graduated in 1931 from Washington Township High School, Washington Township, Iowa; he received his BA in 1936 from Drake University and his Master of Science degree in education in 1942 from Drake University. He taught school at Washington Township High School, Minburn, Iowa, and West Bend High School, Iowa; and was superintendent of schools at DeSoto, Iowa.

In June of 1944 he joined the Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant and in 1950 was promoted to captain in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.

After WW II he served as superintendent of schools at Meservey, Iowa, for 18 years; and principal of Meservey-Thornton, Iowa, and Ventura, Iowa, school districts.

His avocation was coaching girls basketball - he had more than 400 career victories in 24 years of coaching. In 1939 he lead the West Bend team to a state championship and coached four teams in state meets. In 1957 the Meservey girls finished third in the state championships and in 1958 they placed fourth.

After retirement as an educator in 1974, Lovell and Lucille started dividing time between Iowa and Florida so they could spend more time pursuing their love of golf.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille; parents; two brothers: Paul and Lovell's twin brother, Loren; and one sister, Phyllis FitzSimmons.

Memorial services will be held for Lovell and Lucille at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

OSAGE - Zola Naig, 87, of Osage died Monday (Dec. 1, 2008) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Zola was born July 30, 1921, at David, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Belle (McKinney) Fleenor. She graduated from Osage High School in 1938. They were the first class in Osage to wear caps and gowns.

Zola married Lloyd "PeeWee" Naig on Oct. 18, 1942, in Riceville, Iowa. He passed away in December 1962. She worked for 10 years at the ASCS office in Osage, and then was Mitchell County recorder until she retired in 1991. Zola was a member of the David Church in David, Iowa. She enjoyed bowling, going to sports events at school, traveling and working in her garden.

MASON CITY - Wesley A. Rezab, 96, formerly of Rock Falls died Tuesday (Dec. 2, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Old Stone United Methodist Church in Rock Falls with Pastor Jim Turner officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be directed to the Wesley A. Rezab Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Rish, James Harold "Jim"  
 
MASON CITY - James "Jim" Harold Rish, 57, of 913 13th St. S. E., died Monday (Dec. 1, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with full military honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Jim Rish Memorial Fund.

James Harold Rish was born Nov. 2, 1951, in Athens, Greece. He immigrated to the United States at five years old. Jim attended Mason City Schools, later enlisting into the United States Army, serving from 1969 to 1971. He was assigned to the United States Army Advisory Group (KMAG) in Korea. In this unit he was a court reporter and clerk assigned to help assist the Republic of Korea Army in administrative duties.

James was united in marriage to Gloria Woodward on Sept. 2, 1972, in Mason City; to this union two sons were born. James enlisted in the United States Navy from 1973 to 1975, stationed at Subic Bay, Philippines, as a court reporter. After passing his citizenship test he became a United States Citizen on Oct. 19, 1973.

Jim was employed at United Parcel Service from 1975 to 1995, where he drove for nine years and was a supervisor for 11 years. He went to work at Cole Sewell in 1995, which is now Larson Doors, and worked in several management positions, the most recent being first shift production supervisor. Jim will be greatly missed; he was known as being a fair and honest supervisor.

Jim's granddaughter, Cadence, otherwise known as "Schoochie" was the best thing to happen to him. One of the happiest moments of his life was becoming a grandpa!

Jim enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He taught his sons to appreciate nature and the outdoors, taking numerous annual trips. He loved spending time with Gloria every year, getting the boat out and going fishing on the Cedar River, Mitchell. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Jim is survived by his wife, Gloria Rish of Mason City; sons, Christopher (Wendy) Rish of Mason City, Kelly Rish of Des Moines, granddaughter, Cadence Rish; brother, Dan Rish of Iowa Falls; mother-in-law, Dorothy (Dave) Baumgartner of Brownsdale, Minn.; brothers-in-law, Tim (Karla) Woodward of Mason City, Monty (Sarah) Woodward of Nevada; sister-in-law, Robyn (Mike) McCann of Mason City; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Yota Rish; and father-in-law, Leon "Shorty" Woodward.

The family of Jim Rish would like to thank Dr. Septer, The Cancer Center, all the staff at Hospice of North Iowa, Cyndi and George Velthoff, Joel and Mindy Meier and all of our family and friends for all their help and support during this difficult time.

Watson, Donna Mae  
 
CLEAR LAKE - Donna Mae Watson, 74, 101 S. 18th St., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Dec. 2, 2008) at her home.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with the Rev. John Tilp of St. Patrick's Catholic Church officiating.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with a Scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m.

According to her wishes her body has been cremated.

Memorials may be given to the Donna M. Watson Memorial Fund.

Donna was born Aug. 3, 1934, in Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence A. and Louise (Fank) Wedeking. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1952. In 1954 she married Kenneth Watson at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake. Donna worked for a number of banks and insurance companies as a secretary.

She enjoyed traveling, cooking, reading, playing cards and especially her grandchildren. She was a volunteer at Opportunity Village. Donna was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Donna is survived by three children: Kevin Watson and his wife, Tami, of Denver, Colo., Karen Ollenburg and her husband, Scott, of Ventura, and Kurt Watson and his wife, Holly, of Rockwell; six grandchildren, Kristina Watson of Denver, Colo., Rex Ollenburg of Ankeny, Renee Washburn and her husband, Matt, of Northwood, Kya, Kayla and Kurry Watson of Rockwell; sister, Dorothy Schaefer of Montgomery, Ala.; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Harold Amundson of Zearing.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kenneth, and brother, Larry Wedeking.

Zilge, Luverne Otto "Vern"  
 
MASON CITY - Luverne "Vern" Otto Zilge, 85, of 2160 W. State St., died Monday (Dec. 1, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continue Friday at the church one hour before services. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Mason City Exchange Club.

Vern was born June 27, 1923, in Elk River, Minn., the son of Otto and Alma (Duenow) Zilge. He graduated from Anoka High School, attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from the Minnesota School of Business.

Vern served in the U.S. Army during World War II from February 1943 to September 1945, receiving a purple heart.

Following the service, Vern moved to Minneapolis. He married LaVerne Lindgren May 29, 1946. Vern worked for the Maytag Co. for 20 years in Minneapolis before moving to Mason City in 1968. Vern and LaVerne opened and operated Zilge's Appliance Center and continued to operate their store until they retired in 1990.

Vern was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and had a passion for gardening. Vern was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he ushered for 38 years and served on various church boards. Vern was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of Harding Masonic Lodge No. 649 A.F. & A.M., Hi Twelve, Mason City Exchange Club and the Men's Garden Club.

Vern is survived by his wife of 62 years, LaVerne of Mason City; children, Susan (Steven) Wittwer of Minneapolis, Minn., Larry (Kathy) Zilge of Mason City and Janet (Tom) Burnett of Mason City; grandchildren, Paul (Ashley) Schutz, Kris (Sara) Zilge, Ryan (Jannah) Wittwer, Tina Zilge and Dillon Burnett; three great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosie (John) Kucheska and Marlys (Don) Hunter; and brother-in-law, Roy (Terry) Lindgren

Vern was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

MASON CITY - Myrtle C. Banken, 91, died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Myrtle Corrien Banken was born March 24, 1917, in rural Northwood, the daughter of Martin and Carrie (Bergo) Stromley. She attended school in Northwood.
She was married to Ole T. Banken on Oct. 13, 1941, in Reno, Nev. They moved to Mason City in 1948. In 1951, she went to work for the Armour Co. where she worked for 24 years until her retirement in 1975.
Myrtle had a passion for gardening, where she grew vegetables and flowers. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, shopping and also making quilts for her family. Myrtle was an excellent cook and enjoyed baking and cooking for her family. Her family was very important to her and she enjoyed spending time with them.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Marvin Banken and wife, Kathy, of Mason City, Janice Kothenbeutel, of Mason City, Linda Coonrod and husband, Gerald, of Northwood and Dennis Banken and wife, Christie, of Joice; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Inborg Peterson and Ruby Stromley; two brothers, Ansley Stromley, and Kenneth Stromley; and one infant daughter, Carol Banken.

ROCKWELL - Arlene Kafer, 87, of Sheffield, formerly of Rockwell, died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2008) at the Sheffield Care Center.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Ronald Bolinger presiding. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church.
Arlene Berniece Kafer was born May 13, 1921, at Ventura, Iowa, a daughter of Charles Raymond and Mary (Weitzel) Kennedy. She attended Mason City Schools.
On June 18, 1938, Arlene was united in marriage with Gerald W. Kafer at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City. They made their home in Rockwell where they ran a western Tack shop and the Western Boot Store. Primarily, Arlene was a devoted mother and farm wife.
She loved animals and would care for sick livestock for several people. For several years Arlene traveled with Gerald while he did construction all over the country.
In 1987, Arlene and Gerald moved to Mason City, she moved into the Sheffield Care Center in 2001. Arlene was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.
Her family includes: son: Bill (Diane) Kafer, Manly; daughter: Carolyn (Kirby) Koch, Iowa Falls; grandchildren: Chris (Virginia) Kafer, Maple Grove, Minn.; Cindy (Daryel) Hamlin, Clear Lake; Vickie Hunemiller, Janesville; Tammy (Duane) Kallenbach, Clear Lake; Michelle (Randy) Green, Liberty Hill, Texas; Teri (Scott) Sands, Bettendorf; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister: Mary (Roger) Whitnable, Bussey, Iowa; Stepmother, Esther Mulhern; sister-in-law: Mary Ann Kennedy, Fertile.
Arlene is preceded in death by her parents; husband: sister: Violet McCloud; brother: Clarence Kennedy; half brother: Bob Kennedy; half sister: Linda Peterson.

BELMOND - Thelma Nicolet, 83, of Belmond, died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2008) at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Thornton, with Pastor Milton D. Johnson, presiding. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 107 N. Second St. in Thornton.
Thelma Katherine (Floy) Nicolet was born Aug. 30, 1925, at Thornton, the daughter of Peter and Cecelia (Bertelsen) Floy. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton.
She attended school in Thornton and graduated with the Class of 1943. She then attended Upper Iowa University where she received her teaching degree. She taught school in Swaledale, Ventura, and Thornton.
On June 13, 1948, she was united in marriage to Dwain Nicolet at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Thornton. To this marriage three children were born: Cindy (Jim) Petersen, Jo Ellen (Larry) Swenson, and one son Scott (Christine) Nicolet.
They lived on their farm west of Thornton for 49 years. In 1975 she was employed at the First State Bank of Thornton, where she worked until her retirement in 1991. They moved to Belmond in September of 1997. They enjoyed many winters in Texas and summers at Leech Lake in Minnesota.
Thelma's hobbies were gardening, baking, reading, fishing, and boating. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and especially the last five months with Kinslie Jo her youngest great-grandchild.
She is survived by her three children, Cindy (Jim) Petersen, of Des Moines, Jo Ellen (Larry) Swenson, of Belmond, and Scott (Christine) Nicolet of Round Rock, Texas. Thelma has seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Max) Peterson, Angela Heiden, Heather Swenson, Michael Petersen, Amy (Wes) Burrell, Brian Nicolet, and Sarah Nicolet; seven great-grandchildren; and brother, Charles (Janice) Floy from Hot Springs Village, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dwain; sisters, Seydell Hagen, and Bonnie Hagen.
