James Dee ‘Jim’ Gillan

NORTHWOOD — James Dee “Jim” Gillan departed this life on Wednesday (Aug. 22, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City at the age of 73.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at the Northwood United Methodist Church, 1000 First Ave. N. in Northwood, with the Rev. Ed Kail officiating.

There will also be a celebration of Jim’s life at the Central City United Methodist Church, Central City, Neb., at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, with the Rev. Joy Savage officiating.

James Dee “Jim” Gillan, the son of Leland and Cecil (Griffee) Gillan, was born Jan. l, l934 in York, Neb.

Jim attended school in York before moving to Central City, Neb. He graduated from Central City High School in l953. During his school years, he loved playing football, being active in FFA and special times with friends.

On Nov. 21, l954, Jim and Ruth Ellison were united in marriage. This union was blessed with two children, DeAnna Lea and Kenton James.

The only thing Jim loved more than his kids was bragging about them and how proud he was of them. The only ones he enjoyed more than his kids were his grandchildren.

Jim was a practical joker and his laugh was his distinctive trademark. He loved his life and he loved people. Jim had a way of finding people that no one else would associate with and then help them to see their possibilities and held them grow in their self worth.

Jim never knew a stranger, just a friend he hadn’t met, and most of those he met at the local coffee shops where he loved visiting with friend and stranger alike.

Nieces and nephews were also very important to Jim. He loved any time he could spend with them. Jim especially enjoyed the time he spent with nieces Erinn and Georgi. He also loved the time he spent in the Rocky Mountains hunting with brother Sam and his family. Nephew Sammy was especially important to Jim. And just so Sammy could be there, on Nov. 24, l982, Jim and Wendi Persons were united in marriage in the Evanston United Methodist Church in Denver, Colo.

Jim loved it when he entered college at the age of 50, studying computers and business courses. School and all kids were important to him. He was School Board president of Central City, Neb., rural schools, and he proudly served on the North Kossuth School Board in Swea City.

Jim enjoyed cooking, especially baking, hunting, gardening and anything electronic. Even though he was legally deaf, he ran the sound systems in each church Wendi served. He taught himself to make Native American flutes, cross necklaces out of nails and even an Irish Brogan drum.

Throughout his life, Jim had a variety of careers. He farmed, drove school bus, managed the American Legion Club in Central City, Neb., co-owned the LT Printer’s Ink printing shop with his wife, Wendi, and retired in l996 from Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital as in-house pressman.

Jim was a certified lay speaker and was an active member of the Northwood United Methodist Church.

Jim was welcomed into life eternal by his parents and grandparents; brothers Bill and Sam Gillan; sisters Lauree Lorensen and Norma Haith; nephew Jim Lorensen; sister-in-law Sally Persons-Beck; and special pet Snooki.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, the Rev. Marilee (Wendi), of Northwood; his children, DeAnna and Tim Way, of Portland, Ore., and Kenton and Chelle Gillan and their children, Emily, Isabella and Katrina of Central City, Neb.; brother Don and Janet Gillan of Lampe, Mo.; special caregiver, mother-in-law Maxine Olson of Albion, Neb.; father and mother-in-law, Lynn and Frances Persons, of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Marge Gillan, of Denver, Colo., and Connie and Bill Cornwell, of Albion, Neb.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and well as other relatives and many, many friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
