James ‘Jim’ R. Anderson

 

CHANDLER, Ariz. —James “Jim” R. Anderson, 64, of Chandler Ariz., formerly from Mason City, passed away on July 28, 2007, at the Valley of the Sun Hospice Center after a battle with chronic lung disease.

 

Jim is preceded in death by his father, Robert Anderson, and his mother and step-father, Luella and Earl Miltenberger.

 

Jim is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara; son, Scott (Kim) Anderson; daughter, Tracy (Dax) Austin; eight grandchildren, Justin, Heather, Adam, Daniel, Holden, Cooper, Wyatt and Colton; former daughter-in-law, Kimberly; brother, Dick (Vicki) Miltenberger; and sister, Mary Ann (Fred) Burnett.

 

Jim was born and raised in Iowa and moved to Arizona in 1982. Always a salesman, Jim joined the Arizona Lottery as a sales representative. For 14 years he made many friends among his retail customers and fellow employees.

 

He will be remembered for his quick wit, his bright blue eyes, big smile and a friendly nature.

 

We will wish him a farewell and celebrate his life on 11 a.m. today, Aug. 1, 2007, at the Valley of the Sun Mortuary, 10940 E Chandler Heights Road, Chandler Ariz.

MASON CITY — Elinor T. Kornhauser, 77, of 1453 Birch Drive, died Tuesday (July 31, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

 

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Wendy Abrahamson officiating. The family will greet friends from 10 until 10:45 a.m. in the parish hall.

 

Inurnment will take place in the columbarium at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

MASON CITY — Mary Catherine “Katie” Fox, 81, died on Monday (July 30, 2007) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

 

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Steve Palo officiating.

 

The family will greet friends immediately following the services Friday in the fellowship hall at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Merle D. Holm

 

PLYMOUTH — Merle D. Holm, 74, of rural Mason City, went home to be with the Lord on Monday (July 30, 2007) while at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a brief battle with cancer.

 

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at the Plymouth Bible Baptist Church, 808 Broad St., Plymouth, with Pastor Paul Schaefer officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery with flag-folding ceremony by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Merle Dean Holm was born at home in rural Osage on March 5, 1933, to Arthur O. and Adina (Brandt) Holm. He graduated from Rudd High School in 1950. He honorably served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict from 1954 until 1956.

 

Following his discharge he attended Hamilton Business College and received his executive accounting degree. He was engaged professionally as an accountant by various firms and businesses in the Mason City, Hampton and Osage areas.

 

In the late 1970s he established his own business, Merle Holm Accounting. He was currently semi-retired, still enjoying his accounting work until the time of his death.

 

On March 6, 1953, he was united in marriage to Mary Naber in St. Ansgar. To this union was born two children, David and Dianna. The couple divorced in 1977.

 

On July 21, 1984, Merle married Barb Sheridan at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

 

Merle received the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior in 1957. He was an avid reader, enjoying Christian literature, history and current world events. He enjoyed people, with many of his clients becoming lifelong friends.

 

He also liked to travel, listen to polka music and meet friends and family for breakfast. Auto repair was a hobby he enjoyed all of his life.

 

Survivors include his wife, Barb, his son, David (Donna) Holm, of Illiopolis, Ill.; his daughter, Dianna (Luke) Mostek, of Columbus, Neb.; two grandchildren, Joshua and Heather Holm; one sister Joyce (Bill) Squier, of St. Ansgar; two brothers, Gene (LaVonne Wheeler) Holm, and Darrell (Georgia) Holm, all of Mason City; two nieces and two nephews.

 

Preceding him in death were his parents, one infant brother, Dale, and one infant sister.

Irene was born April 19, 1923, in Ventura, the daughter of Roy E. and Nita B. (Ayers) Eibey. She graduated from Rockwell High School in 1941. Irene married Orlan V. Casebolt on April 19, 1942, at the Methodist Church in Rockwell. Irene and Orlan moved to their farm in 1945 where they enjoyed their life in farming.

 

She enjoyed crocheting, crafts and camping. She was a member of the Merriment Club and Wigwam N’ Wagon Camping Club. Orlan and Irene spent their winters in the Rio Grande Valley at Donna, Texas, following retirement.

 

In 1996, Irene moved to the Willows in Mason City and loved living there and visiting with her many friends. She enjoyed doing family history and also kept a diary for more than 40 years.

 

Irene is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Schroeder and her husband, Edwin, of Garner; and sons, Dale Casebolt, of Clear Lake, and Tim Casebolt and his wife, Janeen, of Ankeny; seven grandchildren: Brent, Bryan, Tammy and Scott Schroeder and Bradly Casebolt, and Shaun and Krislynn Casebolt; seven great-grandchildren: Melanie and Braxton Schroeder, Bryson and Ashley Schroeder, Suzanne, Rachel and David Hunn; one great-great-grandson, Cayden; one brother, Richard Eibey and his wife Shirley, of Clear Lake; and sister, Lois Fields, of Salida, Colo.

 

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband, Orlan, Oct. 16, 1999.

Gladys Georgina Kostka

 

MASON CITY — Gladys Georgina Kostka, 76, of 1603 Hillcrest Drive, Mason City, died Tuesday (July 31, 2007) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

 

The family of Gladys Georgina Kostka has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, in her memory.

 

Gladys Georgina Kostka was born on April 23, 1931, in Protivin, the daughter of Joseph and Nettie (Hron) Mrachek. She attended school in Protivin. She was united in marriage to Leonard Kostka on Aug. 25, 1947, in Protivin, and to this union two children were born, Gary and Jim. After their marriage together they farmed between Protivin and Cresco before moving to Charles City in the early ’50s.

 

Gladys worked for the Cedar Valley Hospital as a nurses aide for a number of years. In 1963, they moved to Mason City, where Gladys worked for the Dairy Queen Ice Cream parlor on South Federal for a number of years. Gladys also worked for Mercy Hospital for 14 years in the laundry facility and as a cashier in the cafeteria until her retirement on Nov. 1, 1992.

 

Gladys loved and enjoyed her family and grandchildren, and also enjoyed arranging artificial flowers, and going out to eat at different restaurants with family and friends.

 

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

 

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Leonard Kostka, of Mason City; her two sons, Gary (Jan) Kostka of Mason City, and Jim (Dori) Kostka of Northwood; three grandchildren: Benjamin Kostka, of Charles City, John Kostka, of Burnsville, Minn., and Megan Kostka, of Ames; two step-grandchildren: Kayde Ewing, of Cedar Falls, and Brittany Ewing, of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Grace Lienhard of Cresco; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Mrachek, of Charles City; as well as many nieces, nephews, as well as other relatives and many friends.

 

Her parents and two brothers, Joseph and Clarence Mrachek; preceded her in death.

Ella Lena Weber

 

MASON CITY — Ella Lena Weber, 97, of Mason City, died, Tuesday (July 31, 2007) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

 

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with Father Jon M. Seda officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in New Haven.

 

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

 

Memorials may be directed to the Ella L. Weber Memorial Fund.

 

Ella Lena Weber was born on Jan. 2, 1910, in Gratiot, Wis., the daughter of Albert and Elisa (Gutzmer) Schultz. Ella attended Rockford Country Schools.

 

On Dec. 2, 1934, she was united in marriage to William J. Weber at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven, Iowa. Ella was a dedicated housewife and mother, always putting her family first.

 

In 1957 she began cleaning houses and then worked at numerous restaurants as a cook.

 

Ella enjoyed bingo, crocheting, fishing, traveling, going to the casino and especially spending time with her family.

 

Ella was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Women of the Moose.

 

She is survived by her children, Kenneth (Bonnie) Weber, of Long Beach, Calif., Jean (Ray) Friend, of Glendora, Calif., Dorothy Sullivan, of Mason City, Margaret Linderman, of Mason City, Helen (Richard) Schmidt, of Osage, Jake (Deb) Weber, of Clear Lake, John (Fern) Weber, of Osage, LaDonna (Donald) Parker, of Charles City; her brother, Roger Edgington, of Arizona; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents; three sons: Robert, Joe and Ralph; one daughter, Marie; two brothers and three sisters.

Sophocles ‘Soph’ Dimitri Marty, M.D.

 

MASON CITY — Sophocles “Soph” Dimitri Marty, M.D., was born Feb. 20, 1929, and died May 13, 2007, at the age of 78.

 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rachel, and a sister, Theodora. He was father of four children: Lucinda, Karen (Mark Filipi), Thorin (Catherine Lageson) and Rebecca (Paul Conklin), and grandfather to six grandchildren. Soph will also be remembered by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

 

Soph worked as a dermatologist in Mason City for 37 years. Self-described as “a zit-and-wart doctor,” he always had time for more than just “hello” and was beloved by patients and friends for his kind demeanor.

 

Also, many of his friends and patients knew of his great love for trains. A busy model railroader and photographer, he was often seen with a camera. His favorite photographic subjects were the city of Mason City, the Mason City and Clear Lake trolley line, Iowa Traction Railroad and the Denver, Rio Grande and Western railroad.

 

In celebration of Soph’s life, his family and friends will gather for a memorial service which will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at the First Congregational Church, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Patti Aurand officiating.

Lincoln P. Johnson

 

CLEAR LAKE — Lincoln P. Johnson, 80, joined his wife, Evelyn, in heaven on Tuesday (July 31, 2007). He passed away at home after battling a lengthy illness.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday Aug. 4, 2007, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

 

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

 

The family suggests memorials to the Lincoln P. Johnson Memorial Fund.

 

Lincoln was born the son of Adolph Martin and Mary (Skellinger) Johnson on Jan. 12, 1927, at Clear Lake. Lincoln attended Clear Lake High School. Following school he served in the U.S. Navy as seaman first class during World War II. Following the service he went to masonry school and graduated in the top 10 of his class in 1948.

 

Lincoln married Evelyn Jean Bell on Nov. 2, 1946, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City.

 

He moved to Mason City and worked for Davey Moen Construction then later he founded his own masonry acompany called Johnson Masonry in Mason City. He moved to Clear Lake in 1970. After his retirement he worked as a custodian for Ventura Schools.

 

He enjoyed being around people, telling stories and watching TV game shows. He also enjoyed his computer e-mail and his nickname was goofydinker, which he used extensively to write letters to the editor. His love of his life was spending time with his family.

 

Lincoln is survived by his children, Linda Dianne Goodman, LaGrange, Ga., Karen Jean Johnson and her special friend, Mark Nedved, Crystal Lake, Gary Martin (Carol) Johnson, Mason City, John Lee (Tracie) Johnson, Andover, Minn., Michael Phillip (Lezlie) Johnson, Clear Lake, and Lori Sue (Mike) Schmidt, Whittemore; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Ralph “Red” Johnson, Mason City, Martha Lange, White Bear Lake, Minn., Lorrine “Rine” Michaels, Kirkwood, Mo., Keith Johnson, West Des Moines, Richard Johnson, Clear Lake, and Dorothy Chamberlain, White Bear, Minn.; and a special friend, Virginia Stych, Clear Lake.

 

Lincoln was preceded in death by both parents; his wife, Evelyn Jean; sister Adeline Schendel; two brothers, Calvin K. Johnson and Kenneth R. Johnson.

Mary Catherine Doolan was born March 8, 1926, in Mason City, daughter of Bartholomew and Hilda (Streeck) Doolan.

 

She graduated from St. Joseph High School with the class of 1944. She graduated from NIACC and Upper Iowa University. She taught school in the Rockwell-Swaledale school system and retired in 1991.

 

On April 12, 1948, she married Dick Fox at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. In 1998 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Jekyll Island.

 

Mary served as president of Lydia Circle, The Women of Trinity, Church Women United and P.E.O. Chapter G.N. She served as vice president on the board of KCMR and was a member of Questers. She was a former member of the Trinity Bell choir and secretary of the Rockwell-Swaledale teacher’s organization. She was a lifetime member and served on the board of the Retired Teachers of North Iowa.

 

She is survived by daughter, Ellen Fox (Michael) Carter of Tallahassee, Fla.; son, Steven Fox (Ruthanne) and family of Mason City; and two sisters: Lassara Reddington and Marcia Kiroff, of Omaha, Neb.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers: Bartley Doolan and Charles Michael Doolan.

Dr. Robert L. Moore

 

HAMPTON — Dr. Robert L. Moore 86, of Hampton, passed away Aug. 2, 2007, at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

 

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. The Rev. Dr. Edward R. Peterson will officiate the service.

 

Dr. Robert L. Moore, son of Jess H. and Serene (Fjelstad) Moore, was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Des Moines. He attended and graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1938. He attended the University of Iowa at Iowa City where he received his bachelor of science degree, followed by his doctor of dental surgery degree in 1944. Immediately after graduation he was commissioned a lieutenant in the United States Navy Dental Corps and was assigned to duty at Great Lakes in Illinois.

 

He was married to Betty Jean Livingston on June 16, 1944, in Des Moines. In February 1945, he was assigned to the Field Branch of the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts in Cleveland, Ohio. In September 1945, he was ordered to duty in the Pacific on board the U.S.S. Yosemite. His ship was the second ship to enter Sasebo, Japan, in the first occupation of Japan. He was there until his discharge in April 1946.

 

In June 1946, he began his civilian practice in Hampton. He practiced in Hampton for 48 continuous years. He remained in the U.S. Naval Reserve with the rank of commander until he retired. He had been the commanding officer of the U.S. Naval Reserve Dental Unit in Mason City, which he had belonged to for 23 years.

 

He was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church, served as a board member, was on the finance committee three years, and served as a Sunday school teacher for six years. He was a member of the Hampton City Council, was a Cub Scout leader five years and a Scout committeeman for 10 years. He was a member of the American Legion and a member of Kiwanis for 50 years and was a past president.

 

He played trombone in the municipal band for 42 years. He was a private pilot for over 45 years and frequently flew to Canada for fishing with his son, Dr. Bill Moore. He enjoyed tennis in his later years and played regularly when wintering in Texas.

 

Dr. Moore was especially active in Organized Dentistry and served in various capacities. He received the Distinguished Dentist Award in 1985. This is described as the highest and most prestigious award given each year by the Iowa Dental Association. He was the first dentist from Iowa to be elected president of the Central Regional Dental Testing Service. This group is composed of the state boards of dentistry of 11 Midwestern states. It recently joined with the North East Regional Board to make it the largest regional board with 25 states making up its membership.

 

Dr. Moore was appointed by Gov. Robert D. Ray to three terms on the Iowa State Board of Dentistry, which now is called the State Board of Dental Examiners. He served as president of this group in 1976. In July 2006, Dr. Moore was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his years of dedicated service to the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners.

 

He was a member of the Military Surgeons of the United States. He was selected as a fellow of the International College of Dentists and was a life member of the Iowa Dental Association and the American Dental Association.

 

Dr. Moore is survived by his wife, Betty, of Hampton; his son, Dr. William B. Moore, a dentist who joined his father’s practice in 1978, and wife, Pamela; his daughter Marilyn Moore, a teacher in Des Moines; three grandchildren living in Allentown, Pa.; and two great-granddaughters.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Nancy Hines, in 2003, and Nancy’s husband, Lee, in 1987.




 


 

Erma M. Kunz


 

MASON CITY — A funeral Mass for Erma M. Kunz, 97, of Mason City, formerly of Wesley, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley with Father Randy Schon officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Wesley, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary beginning at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture prayer service at 7 p.m.

 

Erma M. Kunz, the daughter of Clarence and Josephine (Schore) Ward, was born March 24, 1910, on a farm near Wesley. She grew up on a farm one mile west of Wesley and attended country school for four years and then Wesley Public School, where she graduated in 1928.

 

She then attended Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa) and was a two-year graduate in elementary education in 1930. Erma taught for 10 years, the first being in rural school in Kossuth County, four years at Mitchell Consolidated and then five years at Rudd.

 

On June 17, 1940, she married Julius M. Kunz at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. They were blessed with two children, William and Julie. Erma was very active in the church and community.

 

She taught one year in Wesley Public School and then did substituting at St. Joseph’s School and many surrounding schools. She took summer courses from Drake University and was certified to do remedial work in reading and math at St. Joseph’s for six years.

 

Erma was active in church as a lector and on the Parish Council, and served as the church’s first secretary. She was president of the Guild, Regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas for eight different terms and served as District Deputy in the state CD of A for several years. She enjoyed working with children and was a den mother for a number of years. She also enjoyed helping with 4-H.

 

Erma spent many hours at the sewing machine making garments for Julie and herself. She also liked to refinish old furniture. She enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing bridge as well as the many friends she made while involved in these activities.

 

In 2003, Erma moved to Homestead Assisted Living in Mason City to be near her family. Erma M. Kunz died Tuesday (July 31, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, at the age of 97.

 

Erma loved her family and being there when needed. She is survived by two children, William Kunz and his wife, Johnine, of Cedar Rapids, and Julie West of Mason City; and three grandchildren, William Andrew Kunz of Cedar Rapids, Danial West of Algona and Angela West of Mason City. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, William Kunz and his wife Doris of West Des Moines; three sisters-in-law, Lewine Kunz of Des Moines, Louise Pace of Texas and Collie Kunz of Ankeny; and many nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Julius, on May 2, 1989; two brothers, Earl and Virgil; and a son-in-law, Dennis West.

Milo John Greimann

 

CHAPIN — Milo John Greimann, 84, died Aug. 1, 2007, at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield.

Milo was the oldest of seven children born to Frederick William Greimann and Eleanora (Schaefer) Greimann on the Greimann family farm southwest of Sheffield on Aug. 15, 1922. Milo lived his entire life within 20 miles of his birthplace.

 

He was a lifelong member of Zion St. John Lutheran Church in Sheffield, where he was baptized Aug. 29, 1922, and confirmed Aug. 21, 1938. He attended Chapin Consolidated School through eighth grade. He then worked at home helping his father farm and then worked for his uncle, George Schaefer, doing farm work.

 

Milo and Burnice “Burnie” Petheram were united in marriage in the Chapin United Methodist Church on April 15, 1951. Children born to them were Donald, Dale, Edward and Lois. He and his family were avid campers, traveling to many places in the United States.

 

In 1947, he and brothers Lewis and Carl formed the Greimann Brothers Co., repairing farm machinery. In 1965 the company became incorporated, forming Greimann Bros. Inc. (GBI), manufacturing custom-built equipment and commercial bucket elevators and later seed plant facilities. This company became well known for its precision workmanship all over the United States.

 

At Zion St. John Lutheran Church, he served on the church board three times and sang in the choir. A Greimann brothers quartet, (Milo, Lewis, Carl and Paul), sang at different local events.

 

In 1985 he started building his 40-foot-long train which has been seen in parades and town events. It has been an annual ride at the Franklin County Fair since 1988. Children and grownups flock to have the eight-minute ride around the fairgrounds. Milo said, “It is for children of all ages.”

 

Milo was a member of the Iowa and National Blacksmiths and Welders Association. In 1996 he was named“Blacksmith of the Year. He was a member of the Hampton Lions Club, serving as president. He was also a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship and the Warren Coleman Honorary Plaque. He also was a member of the Franklin County Historical Society and a year ago he was made Honorary Life Member of the Franklin General Hospital Auxiliary.

 

Surviving are his wife; sons: Donald (Alice), Hampton; Dale (Peggy) Galena, Ill.; son-in-law, Greg Mayne, Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Jaclyn Greimann, Julie Greimann, Angela (Ben) Richter, Leslie Greimann, Stephanie (Nate) Kofron, and Ian and Elizabeth Mayne; great-grandson, Malachi Robertson; sister, Betty (Byron) Heginger; and two brothers, Floyd (Arliss) Greimann and Ronald (Laurie) Greimann, Sheffield.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Edward; daughter, Lois Mayne; and brothers Lewis, Carl and Paul.

GARNER — Evelyn N. Radloff, 93, of Garner, died Wednesday (Aug. 1, 2007) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Evelyn Neva Radloff, the daughter of Chris and Bertha (Krieger) Hansen, was born Dec. 7, 1913, at Nora Springs. She graduated from Nora Springs High School and Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Evelyn then worked as a secretary at the Brick and Tile Building in Mason City.

 

On Feb. 18, 1951, she was married to Laurence F. Radloff at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Nora Springs. They farmed southeast of Garner on the home farm until Laurence’s death in 1997. Evelyn remained in her home with the help of her nephew, David Hansen, until a stroke caused her to enter the Concord Care Center in July of 2006.

 

Evelyn was a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and took part in many church functions. Evelyn and Laurence were big supporters of youth in the church and all high school events. They were given the honor of being chosen “Honorary Parents.”

 

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mary (Bob) Davis, of Mason City and Anna Radloff, of Garner, and many nieces and nephews.

 

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Laurence, on Jan. 11, 1997; her parents; and a brother, Ervin Hansen.

Derek Bowers


 

SEATTLE, Wash. — Derek Bowers, 48, passed away July 10, 2007 in Seattle after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

 

He was born on Jan. 16, 1959, in Iowa City to William and Mildred (Schmidt) Bowers. His parents are originally from the Mason City and Nora Springs areas.

 

Derek grew up in Peoria, Ill., where he graduated from Limestone Community High School and Bradley University. He also attended Illinois State University, where he earned a master of business administration degree. At the time of his death, he was general manager of Pro Comm Protection and Communications Inc. of Seattle.

 

Surviving Derek is his wife, Tracy, of Mill Creek, Wash.; a stepson and two stepdaughters; his parents, of Hanna City, Ill.; and brothers, David (Patricia) of Haddonfield, N.J.; Steven (Anna), of Brighton, Mich.; and James (Laurie) of Indianola. Also surviving are four nieces, two nephews, two grandnephews and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, C. Eugene and Lucille Schmidt, of Nora Springs; Loren and Genevieve Bowers, of Mason City; and an uncle, Lloyd Bowers, of Colorado Springs.

Elinor was born Dec. 20, 1929, in Princeton, Mo., the daughter of Orin and Beulah (Bruner) Tucker. She graduated from Allerton High School, Allerton, Iowa, as class valedictorian, then attended Christian College in Columbia, Mo., for two years.

 

Elinor married Robert J. Kornhauser on Nov. 4, 1950, in Des Moines. While living in Des Moines, Elinor worked for Younkers Department Store. The Kornhausers moved to Mason City in 1957. In 1957, Elinor went to work for Frank J. Enbusk & Co., Certified Public Accountants. She then went on to work for United Home Bank & Trust, where she worked 30 years, retiring in 1994.

 

Elinor was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she served as directress of St. John’s Altar Guild. She also served as Diocesan Altar Guild Directress on the state level. Elinor was Past Worthy High Priestess White Shrine, Worthy Matron of Eastern Star, Mother Advisor Rainbow Girls and served as Grand Deputy of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls in Iowa and Minnesota. Elinor was also a member of Pilot Club and Professional Secretaries.

 

Elinor is survived by her husband, Robert J. Kornhauser, of Mason City; daughter, Elizabeth I. “Lisa” Kornhauser, of Des Moines; sister, Carolyn T. Reighley and husband, Fenton J. “Jim” of Boones Mill, Va.; and two nephews, Kurt B. Reighley of Seattle, Wash., and Todd A. Reighley currently serving in Baghdad, Iraq.

Robert ‘Bob’ Joseph Dugan

GARNER — Robert “Bob” Joseph Dugan, 51, of Garner, died Wednesday (Aug. 1, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City with his family at his side. His sudden death was the result of a massive brain aneurism that occurred while he was golfing with his friends.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Leland with Pastor Timothy Miller officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark in Forest City, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Bob was born on March 3, 1956, in Oelwein, to Robert L. Dugan and Joan Shannon-Dugan. He attended grade school at ICA Catholic in Fairbank, middle school at Fairbank Oran and high school in Fayette, where he graduated in 1974.

In 1976, Bob moved to the Forest City/Garner area, when he began his career at Winnebago Industries. At the time of his death, he was a manufacturing engineer in chassis weld. Bob also spent many golf seasons as the course ranger at The Barn (Gruis Recreation Area).

Bob married Anna Abbott on March 12, 1984. To this union were born Samantha Jo Dugan and Bart James Dugan. The couple divorced in 1995.

Bob enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, going to concerts and spending time with his friends. He was known for always having a good time (“But are we having fun?”) and for his “words of wisdom.” Bob loved life and lived every day to the fullest.

He was an excellent father and his children were very important to him. He loved watching them play sports through high school and was their biggest fan. He was also a great brother, loving son and loyal friend to many.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Samantha Jo, of Cedar Falls, and son, Bart James, of Leland; mother, Joan Shannon and step-father, Gerald (Benny) Bates of Oelwein; three sisters: Connie (Wayne) Thibault of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Judy Gamm and Mark Sears, of Gifford; and Barb Dugan and Scott Rayhons of Ventura. Also surviving are nieces Megan Gamm of Odessa, Mo., and Melissa Gamm of Liberty, Mo.; step-mother, Ivy Dennler of Elkader; special friend Tammy Mary of Garner; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

D.D. ‘Toot’ Card

HAMPTON — D.D. ‘Toot’ Card, 76, of 1655 Dorell Drive, Hampton, died Wednesday (Aug. 1, 2007) in the Hospice Unit of the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton of pulmonary fibrosis.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont. The family will greet friends starting at 9:30 a.m.

Delores Dale Card was born on Sept. 2, 1930, to Chester and Kathryn (Bulten) Card at Dumont. He graduated from Dumont High School in 1949. He married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Meinders, on Feb. 23, 1951, at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont. To this union two sons were born, Douglas and Dwight.

Toot honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict from 1952-1954. Following his discharge, he started working for the Dumont School as a custodian and bus driver. He retired in 1990 after 36 years.

He then worked for Greene Limestone of Greene for six years, after which he worked for the Hampton Country Club, where he was a member and a former board member.

During the 1960s and ’70s you would see him umpiring baseball and refereeing basketball. He enjoyed any kind of sports and spent a great deal of time coaching kids. He was also an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Toot and Phyllis spent the last 11 winters in Mesa, Ariz.

Toot was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church and the Dumont American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Phyllis; son Doug and Doug’s wife, Diane, whom he loved as a daughter, of Hampton; son, Dwight of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Seth Card (friend Felicia) of Hampton, Ryan (Crystal) Card, of Hampton, Kasey Card of Denver, Colo., and Mati Card of Denver, Colo.; three step-great-grandchildren, Alexa, Hector and Laney, and Felicia’s children, Nick and Journey; two brothers, Dallas of Alexander and Robert of Dumont; a sister, Judy John, of Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Dorothy J. Gordon, 90, of Mason City, died Thursday (Aug. 2, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Paul Schaefer officiating. Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Dorothy was born June 25, 1917, in Mason City, the daughter of Will James and Nellie May (Stickney) Hood. She graduated from Mason City High School. Dorothy married Paul R. Gordon on June 15, 1940, in Mason City.

Dorothy enjoyed crocheting and making multiple afghans for many people in the area nursing homes. She also enjoyed reading, cooking and going for long rides.

Dorothy found great joy in raising her wonderful children. Dorothy had a trusting knowledge of Jesus Christ and wanted her children and those she loved to come to know Him.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Betty Kruger and husband, Dewey, of Northwood; Janet Smith and her husband, LeRoy, of Mason City; Susan Trappe, of Mason City; Kathryn Foster and her husband, Mike, of Mason City; Thelma Terrell and husband, Chris, of Allen, Texas; William Gordon and wife, Kay, of Owatonna, Minn.; Raymond Gordon and wife, Lorraine, of Manly; Larry Gordon and wife, Linda, of Mason City; Lee Gordon and wife, Tina, of Casa Grande, Ariz.; Dennis Gordon and wife, Chanthy, of Mason City; and Kenneth Gordon and wife, Nancy, of Albert Lea, Minn.; 38 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 1981; her parents; two daughters and one son in infancy; two brothers; two sisters; and five grandchildren in infancy.

Sgt. 1st Class Robert Dull

My brother, Sgt. 1st Class Robert Dull, and my father, Sgt. George O. Dull, preceded me in Europe in World War II and processed out through 36th REPO Depot, Le Havre, France.

I was the sergeant major of the battalion for a short time and was very pleased to review their records. Father “George,” critically wounded, passed at age 46. Sgt. Robert E. Dull continued on to Korea and Vietnam, retiring prior to the shutdown of Vietnam, and returned as a civilian to assist in the operation of supply depots until the close of the Vietnam War.

In civilian life, he continued to manage supply depots for Parson & Son, an international contractor in support of worldwide oil pumping stations. My wife, Shelloy, and I were blessed to be a close part of his remarkable life to the end, which came on July 25, 2007, in Las Vegas.

Sophocles ‘Soph’ Dimitri Marty, MD

MASON CITY — Sophocles “Soph” Dimitri Marty, M.D. Born Feb. 20, 1929, and died May 13, 2007, at the age of 78.

Survived by his wife of 57 years, Rachel, and a sister, Theodora. He was father of four children, Lucinda, Karen (Mark Filipi), Thorin (Catherine Lageson), and Rebecca (Paul Conklin) and grandfather to six grandchildren. Soph will also be remembered by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

Soph worked as a dermatologist in Mason City for 37 years. Self-described as “a Zit and Wart Doctor,” he always had time for more than just “hello” and was beloved by patients and friends for his kind demeanor.

Also, many of his friends and patients knew of his great love for trains. A busy model railroader and photographer, he was often seen with a camera. His favorite photographic subjects were the city of Mason City, the Mason City and Clear Lake trolley line, Iowa Traction Railroad, and the Denver, Rio Grande and Western railroad.

In celebration of Soph’s life, his family and friends will gather for a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at the First Congregational Church, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Patti Aurand officiating.

Luella Marie Flo

LAKE MILLS — Luella Marie (Wogen) Flo, age 89, of Lake Mills, died Friday (Aug. 3, 2007) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kiester, Minn., with Pastor Chris Fiske officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Luella Marie (Wogen) Flo, the daughter of Berta Elisabet “Lizzie” (Wiig) and Severin “Sam” Wogen, was born on Aug. 7, 1917, in Humboldt County, Iowa. Both her parents were immigrants from Norway. Luella was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Humboldt and she attended school there. When Luella was nine years old, she moved with her family to rural Lake Mills.

Luella attended school in Lake Mills through tenth grade until her family moved to a farm south of Vinje, Iowa. She was confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje. The family moved to a farm east of Kiester in 1933. She attended Kiester High School, and graduated in 1935. Luella attended Waldorf College and taught country school for several years.

On March 23, 1941, Luella married Bert Flo at her parents’ home farm near Kiester. Bert and Luella farmed near Mansfield, Minn., for one year, and near Leland, Iowa, for four years. In 1946, they moved to their farm in Eden Township, Winnebago County, Iowa.

Luella was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she had served as Ladies Aid president, taught Sunday school, and also served as Sunday school superintendent. She was also a 4-H leader for many years, and had been Winnebago County Farm Bureau president. After retiring from farming, Bert and Luella enjoyed spending the winter months in McAllen, Texas.

Survivors include her children, Lois Hackbarth of Rochester, Minn., Barbara (Joel) Hipps of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Steven (Karen) Flo of Kasota, Minn.; eight grandchildren: Anne (Patrick) Arnold of Allen, Texas, John (Greta Boesel) Hackbarth of San Francisco, Calif., Jane (Terry Gullickson) Hackbarth of Rochester, Minn., Paul Hackbarth of Rochester, Minn., Stephanie (Lara Morgan) Hipps of Santa Cruz, Calif., Daniel (Lynn Archer) Flo of Minneapolis, Minn., Dr. Theresa (Michael) Gunderson of North Mankato, Minn., and Dr. Jennifer (Maria Gaycheck) Flo of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven great-grandchildren: Michael Arnold, Jarred Peittersen, Derick Funk, Jake Flo, Kia Flo, Catherine Archer-Flo, and Liam Gunderson; a sister, Selma Sime of Lake Mills; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Wogen of Lake Mills; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Lizzie; husband, Bert; grandson-in-law, Rick Funk; and three brothers, Elvin Wogen, Milford Wogen, and Stanley Wogen.

CHARLES CITY — James S. Scoles, 84, of Charles City, died Saturday (August 4, 2007) at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

James Sidney Scoles was born on March 11, 1923, near Nashua, the son of Charles and Minnie (Smith) Scoles. He attended Nashua schools. On Feb. 13, 1947, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Sullivan in Des Moines. James served in the United States Army Air Corps in England during World War II. He was a long-time employee of Oliver/White Farm in Charles City. He was a member of the American Legion and Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. His interests included playing cards, camping, dancing, golfing, and spending time with family and friends.

Living family members include three children, Jim (Joyce) Scoles of Charles City, Carol (Dennis) Krausman of Lone Tree, Colo., Jon (Laura) Scoles of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Jane Scoles of Omaha, Neb., Jill Scoles of Blair, Neb., Melinda Harris of Dallas, Texas, Sarah Lanckriet of Centenial, Colo., Molly Scoles of West Des Moines, and Matt Ward of West Des Moines; and four great grandchildren. James is also survived by his special friend, Alice DeBower Funte, of Charles City and her family, including two children, Shari (Jerome) Schmitt of Charles City, Roy (Gloria) DeBower of Marshalltown; five grandchildren: Paula (Shawn) Vroman of Waterloo, Sondra Schmitt of Waterloo, Karla Goddard of Charles City, Josh (Becky) DeBower of Marshalltown, and Tom DeBower of Chicago; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis, in 1997; six sisters, Hazel Bryan, Geraldine Johnson, Colleen Martin, Luella Dean, Mary Jane Walker, and Margaret Williamson; and two brothers, Robert Scoles and Harry Scoles.
