Dennis ‘Denny’ K. Garlock

CLEAR LAKE — Dennis “Denny” K. Garlock, 57, 427 N. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Sunday (Sept. 24, 2006) at the St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Camp Tanglefoot, 14948 Dogwood Ave., Clear Lake, with Pastor Thom Christian, First Congregational Church, officiating. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Sept. 26, 2006, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Dennis K. Garlock Memorial Fund.

Denny was born on May 4, 1949, in Mason City, son of Donald and Ruth (Duesenberg) Garlock.

Denny graduated from Clear Lake High School, and attended Iowa State University and San Jose State in California.

He returned home and worked for Duesenberg Construction, Clear Lake, and Dave Schmidt, Iowa City, as a heavy equipment operator, and most recently at Fleetguard, Inc. in Lake Mills.

Denny was united in marriage to Shelley McCauley on Jan. 10, 2004, at Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown.

He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors pheasant hunting and feeding the squirrels. Denny had several pet cats that were very special to him. He most recently was working on updating and remodeling his home with his wife, Shelley.

Denny is survived by his wife, Shelley, of Clear Lake; three stepchildren, Mikki (Al) Guerdet, of Charles City; Erik (Jess) Bergman, of Cedar Falls; and Zach McCauley, of Cedar Falls; brother, Don Garlock, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Connie (George) Pluchos and their children, Katie and Emily, of Portland, Oregon; and Carol (Steve) Olsen, of Maui, Hawaii; two brothers-in-law, Jeff (Cindy) Brattrud and their son, Dain, of Clear Lake; and Scott (Karo) Brattrud and their children, Jenna and Ryan, of Clear Lake; two aunts, Dorothy Garlock, of Clear Lake; and Dorothy Willson, of Holland, Mich.; mother-in-law, Shirley Brattrud, of Clear Lake; and several cousins and other relatives.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law, Gaylord Brattrud.

Lucie Merritt (Hale) Graham

Lucie Merritt (Hale) Graham, 97, passed away at the Bettendorf Health Care Center in Bettendorf, Iowa, on Sept. 24, 2006.

Lucie was born in Willisburg, Ky., on April 14, 1909, and was the eleventh child of twelve (eight brothers and three sisters). She was preceeded in death by her husband, Harold, two infant sons, and all of her brothers and sisters.

Lucie married Harold Graham on Sept. 26, 1925. He passed away in 1976. She was a homemaker and operated a truck farm with her husband in North Central Iowa in the town of Plymouth for many years. They were recognized for “Graham’s strawberries.” She was a resident in Plymouth for more than 50 years and moved to the Quad Cities in the fall of 2003.

She and her husband both lived and worked in DeKalb and Waukegan, Ill., during their early years. They had four sons. Harold Jr. and Wayne passed away as infants.

Surviving sons are Elmer Eugene Graham and his wife, Joan, of Dayton, Ohio, and David Lynn Graham, and his wife, Sue, of Bettendorf, Iowa.

Lucie has five grandsons, Scott, Jeff, Douglas, Matt and Bruce; sons of Gene and Joan, and two granddaughters, Bridget and Brooke, daughters of David and Sue. She has 17 great-grandchildren.

She was often called the “Energizer Bunny” by her granddaughters. She enjoyed the Hale family reunions that were held in Dekalb for many years and her visits to her hometown area in northern Kentucky. Lucie also loved the company of her family and friends and she will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Dekalb, Illinois.

Funeral services immediately follow at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be at the Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb.

Marjorie LaVon Fjone

THORNTON — Marjorie LaVon Fjone, 63, of Thornton, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2006) at her home, after a short, but courageous, battle with cancer.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Rockwell with the Rev. John Tilp officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, rural Thornton, at a later date.

Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 26, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart School in Rockwell.

Marjorie, one of 10 children, was born on Nov. 5, 1942, to Sherman and Beatrice (Cahalan) Swenson in Swaledale, where she grew up and attended school.

She was united in marriage to John Fjone on Aug. 5, 1959, in Clear Lake. After their marriage, the couple moved to John’s farm where they farmed and raised their three children until 1982 when they moved to their present home. Over the next several years, Marjorie enjoyed working at various jobs and spent the last seven years employed with Larson Door Company.

She also enjoyed many family camping and horseback riding trips. She was a cheering grandmother at numerous sports activities with her many grandchildren. Spending time with family was her lifelong priority. She also enjoyed traveling and caring for her flowers, yard and home.

Marjorie is survived by her husband, John, of Thornton; children, Christy Baxter, of Swaledale, Brenda (Rob) Kuhlemeier, of Rockwell, and Richard (Juli) Fjone of Swaldale; grandchildren, Tim, Holly, and Cody Baxter, Matthew, Emily, Josi, and Michael Fjone, Mitchell and Kelsey Kuhlemeier; and great-granddaughter, Keelee Sheriff; sisters, Mary Coyle, of Ventura, Doris Boehnke, of Ventura, Dorothy (Charlie) Callahan, of Rockwell, and Victoria Swenson, of Clear Lake; brothers, Don (Marge) Swenson, of Swaledale, Dean (Norma Jean) Swenson, of Van Horne, Iowa, Larry (Cleo) Swenson, of Rockwell, and John (Peggy) Swenson, of Garland, Texas. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Beatrice; an infant sister, Donella; and two brothers-in- law, Donald Coyle and Harold Boehnke.

John Levenhagen

ROCKWELL — John Levenhagen, 82, of 103 Walnut, died Sunday (Sept. 24, 20060 at the Rockwell Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 Second St. S. in Rockwell, with Pastor Ron Bolinger officiating. Burial will be in the Rockwell Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by members of the American Legion Gallagher Post No. 208.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 Second St. S. in Rockwell.

Memorials may be directed to the John Levenhagen Memorial Fund.

John Levenhagen was born on Jan. 17, 1924, in Rockwell, the son of Otto and Johanna (Luben) Levenhagen. John attended country school in Rockwell. John enlisted into the United States Marines and was honorably discharged. John met Margaret Jimenez at the Surf Ballroom. They were united in marriage on July 5, 1947, and to this union, five children were born. John farmed in the Rockwell and surrounding area. He worked for Northwestern Cement Plant for 30 years until his retirement.

John enjoyed being outdoors, mowing, raising livestock, woodworking; his greatest love was spending time with his family and friends. John was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Levenhagen, of Rockwell; children, William (Nancy) Levenhagen, of Rockwell, Barbara (Fred) Jones, of Mason City, and Debbie (Lee) Behr, of Rockwell; son-in-law, Jerry Lorentzen, of Rockwell; grandchildren, Joey (Dawn Zaiger) Jones, Kristie (Timothy Zaiger) DeMaris, Mike (Karrie) Lorentzen, Troy (Chris) Levenhagen, Shawn (Armador) Levenhagen, Dawn Rose, Taylor Swenson, Josh Behr, and Justin Behr; great-grandchildren, Tony, Freddy, Tabatha, and Courtney Jones, Nikko and Timothy Zaiger, Jordan, Courtney, Jonna, and Cameron Levenhagen, Jordan, Josh, Devin, and Ashley Lorentzen, Cody and Misty Rose; one great-great-grandchild, Evan Jones; sister, Lucille Levenhagen, of Rockwell; sisters-in-law, Beverly Levenhagen, of Mason City, Pat Levenhagen, of Charles City; along with nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Louise (Garufis) Town

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Louise (Garufis) Town, 71, of Bloomington, Minn. died Friday (Sept. 22, 2006) at Martin Luther Manor in Bloomington, Minn.

She is a graduate of Mason City High School Class of 1953.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Frelund; parents, Anton and Alexandra Garufis; niece, Monica Grant Wulf.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Town; son, Tony Frelund; sisters, Helen (DeWayne) Grant; Mary (Emmanuel) Bikakis; Katherine (Jim) Bergeson; special niece, Stephanie Grant; four stepchildren; two stepgranddaughters; and other family and friends.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at Martin Luther Manor, 1401 East 100th St. Bloomington, Minn.

Edith Helen Albers

MASON CITY — Edith Helen Albers, 81, of 804 S. Garfield Ave., died of cancer Saturday (Sept. 23, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery, Burchinal.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Edith Albers Memorial Fund.

Edith was born on April 25, 1925 near Burchinal, Iowa, to Andrew and Marie (Bickford) Wernet. She married John Albers on Oct. 17, 1940 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Thornton, Iowa.

To this union was born a daughter, Karon Kay and a son, Lynn John.

John and Edith farmed south of Swaledale until 1974 when they retired from farming and move to Mason City. During many of her years in Mason City, “Grandma Eddie” provided a day-care service in her home, helping raise and influence the lives of many children.

Edith was a woman of strong faith. She was a Sunday school teacher while a member of the First Baptist Church of Swaledale. Upon her move to Mason City, she became a member of the First Baptist Church of Mason City. Family was also important to Edith. She was always close to her sisters, and often enjoyed going to Bingo with her sister Marcella.

Always active, Edith enjoyed playing cards, baking, needlepoint, working in her yard and caring for her roses. Her daughter’s family will never forget that she was always there for them, and will fondly remember her famous homemade angelfood cakes for birthdays and cookie plates at Christmas. Friends and neighbors will remember that she was quick with a cup of coffee and a snack whenever they would stop over for a visit.

Edith is survived by a daughter, Karon Harmon and husband, Howard, of Swaledale; grandson, Brian L. Harmon and wife, Jeri, and their children, Tyler Spurgeon, Erin Spurgeon and Camille Harmon, of Des Moines; granddaughter, Roxanne Shadley and husband, William, and their children, Jonathan Conroy and Spencer Shadley, of Rockwell; brother, Russell Wernet, of Garner; sisters, Bonnie Jensen and husband, Harry Lee, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Iona Nuehring and husband, Harlan, of Mason City, Iola Maertens and husband, William, of Toledo, Iowa and Marcella Gruben, of Mason City; many loving nieces, nephews as well as a host of caring friends.

Edith was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John, in May of 1997; son, Lynn John, in infancy; three sisters, Greta Ottchen, Pauline Peterson and Virginia Harbeson; two brothers, Carroll and Leonard Wernet.

Gus Kavars

MASON CITY — Gus Kavars, 85, of 310 S. Louisiana Ave., died Sunday (Sept. 24, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Dr. Jennifer Edinger, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Gus Kavars was born on July 19, 1921, at Mason City, a son of Nick and Bertha (DeGraff) Kavars. He was united in marriage to Marlene Hackbart.

Gus attended Mason City schools and was a graduate of Mason City High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to Mason City.

Gus worked at the Mason City Brick and Tile Company, International Mineral and Chemical and for the Mason City Community Schools, where he served as a custodian and bus driver at Harding Elementary, John Adams Middle School and Mason City High School, retiring in 1983.

He was an avid sports fan. He followed the Hawkeyes, Twins and Vikings. He enjoyed fishing and golfing and his pets.

During retirement, Gus volunteered at the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank in Mason City.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene Kavars, of Mason City; a daughter, Heidi Kavars, of Mason City; a son, Mark Kavars, of Cedar Falls; a sister, Katherine Kiroff, of Mason City; four sisters-in-law, Janice Hackbart, of Mason City, Barbara (Dennis) Bartz, of Grafton; Jane (Jerry) Psotka, of Bloomington, Minn.; and Pauline Kavars, of Mason City; a brother-in-law, Jerry (Jan) Hackbart, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, George, John, Steve and Jim Kavars; and a sister, Delma Kavars.

Meryl Darlene R. Rogers

CLEAR LAKE — Meryl Darlene R. Rogers, 97, formerly of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2006) at the Iowa Odd Fellows Home in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Pastor Tom Healey officiating. There will be an inurnment at noon on Thursday at the Clear Lake Cemetery for family and friends.

Visitation will be one hour preceding the service.

Memorials maybe given to the Darlene R. Rogers Memorial Fund.

Darlene was born in Iowa City on Nov. 15, 1908, the daughter of Meta Pommerening, of Algona. As an infant, she was adopted by Andrew J. and Estella (Miller) Rice, of Floyd Township, Iowa.

Darlene graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1928, attended Hamilton Business School and worked at the Peoples Gas and Electric for 12 years.

On Sept. 29, 1940, she married Dr. Kingsley R. Rogers in Clear Lake.

Darlene was a Past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star, a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekahs, a member of the Crescent Club and the First Congregational Church, all of Clear Lake.

Darlene is survived by two sons, Richard R. Rogers, of Clear Lake and John D. (June) Rogers, of Burlington, Iowa; and one daughter, Mary (Gary) Marshall, of Conoga Park, Calif. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Barbara Marshall Curtiss, Darcy Marshall, JoAnn Marshall, Sue Rogers Foster and her husband, Robert, Stephen (Jennifer) Rogers, Kathrine Rogers, Janette Rogers and Jason (Rebecca) Rogers; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

Darlene was preceded in death by her mother; adoptive parents; husband; half-sister, Virginia (Amish) Herman; adoptive brothers, Earl, Ray and Elmer Rice; adoptive sisters, Adelaide Wallace and Anna Potter; and granddaughter, Sandra Marshall Rebbeck.

Mary G. Smith

MASON CITY — Mary G. Smith, 80, of 1418 N. Jefferson Ave., in Mason City, and formerly of Rockwell, died early Sunday evening (Sept. 24, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City with Pastor James Allard officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. and continue one hour prior to Mary’s service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mary Genevieve Smith was born on July 24, 1926, near Alexander, Iowa, to Lloyd A. and Hattie Alice (Polmateer) Davis. She was the fourth of six children born to her parents.

The family moved to Belmond, where Mary was employed at a candy kitchen, bakery and hotel. The family later relocated to Hampton where Mary worked at several businesses including Northrup King Seed Company, Brun’s Inn Café, Ferris Nursery, Finnel’s Dime Store and the corn canning factory.

While employed at the corn canning factory, Mary met her future husband, Robert “Bob” Harvey Smith. Mary and Bob were united in marriage on July 23, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and resided in Mason City.

In January of 1960, Mary and Bob moved to Rockwell. During the 1960s, Mary worked at the Rockwell Laundromat. From 1969 until 1977, Mary tended to many children in her home, providing day care.

In August of 1977, Mary accepted a position as a kitchen cook and dietary aide at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home. She retired in 2004 following 27 years of service to the residents and the home.

In August of 2005, Mary sold her home and moved to Mason City, first living with her son, Jerry then sharing a home with her daughter, Ladell.

Mary was a devoted wife and nurturing mother and grandmother. In earlier years, Mary and her family would spend many Sundays visiting at her Grandparents Davis�� home. They also treasured many an adventure while camping.

Some of Mary’s interests and activities included bird watching, collecting buttons and ceramic birds, visiting with friends, playing cards, especially Canasta or 500 and sitting outside in the evenings, enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. She shared a special companionship with her two dogs, Rosie and Sandy.

Mary was a renowned quick bread baker. She baked many hundreds of loaves of quick bread, both giving and selling her goods. Her specialty bread and best seller was sour cream quick bread.

In Mary’s later years, she looked forward to attending the Adult Day Care Center, visiting with friends, putting together jigsaw puzzles and cheering for the latest contestant on “The Price Is Right.”

Mary is described as a woman who was very caring, witty, a great storyteller and she had a wonderful sense of humor.

Mary was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Rockwell.

She is survived by her daughter, Ladell Overbeck, of Mason City; her two sons, Leon Smith, of Clear Lake and Jerry Smith (Deborah Smith), of Mason City; her stepson, Michael (Terry) Smith, of Mason City; her brother, Donald Davis, of Dumont; her brother-in-law, Gerald Smith, of Taylorville, Ky. and her sister-in-law, Winifred Fredericks, of Valier, Ill.

Mary will also be a cherished memory to her two grandsons, Cory Overbeck and Larry Overbeck, of Mason City; her step-grandchildren, John Smith, Beth Smith and James Smith and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Mary in death are her husband, Bob Smith, in September of 1969; her parents, Lloyd and Hattie Davis; her two sisters, Violet Davis and Clara “Toots” Grover; and her two brothers, William “Bud” Davis and Al “Sonny” Davis.

Howard Wesley Gordon

WEBSTER CITY — Howard Wesley Gordon, 87, of Webster City, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2006) at Hamilton Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City, with military rites.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Webster City, with Dr. Gale E. Mack officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church and prior to graveside services on Wednesday.

Howard Wesley Gordon, son of Lester and Ellen Gunderson Gordon, was born on March 26, 1919, on a farm southwest of Webster City. He graduated from Webster City High School in 1936.

On May 31, 1946, he married Marcelyn Doolittle at Ames, Iowa. The couple farmed southwest of Webster City until August of 1992 when they moved to 1308 Locust St., Webster City.

They have two sons, Dr. Paul Gordon, of Mason City, and Marvin Gordon, of Webster City.

Howard enjoyed his family, farming and farm related activities and many community service organizations. His grandchildren and their activities have been highlights of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Marcelyn; by son, Dr. Paul Gordon and his wife, Marsha, of Mason City; granddaughter, Dr. Angela Thompson and husband, Rob, and great-granddaughter, Mia Ashley Thompson, of Iowa City, and grandson, Jason Gordon, of Ames. He is also survived by son, Marvin Gordon, and his wife, Crystal, of Webster City, grandsons, Nathan, of Ames and Jarod and Christopher Gordon, of Webster City.

He is survived by three brothers and their wives, Kenneth and Beulah Gordon, Norman and Irene Gordon, and Virgil and Mary Lou Gordon; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Opal Doolittle.

Robert W. Boekelman

TITONKA — Robert W. Boekelman, 82, of Titonka, died Monday (Sept. 25, 2006) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Titonka, with Pastor Robin Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Township Cemetery in Titonka.

Lillian ‘Lily’ Pitkin

MASON CITY — Lillian “Lily” Pitkin, 85, of Mason City, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2006) at the USA Healthcare Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at the Faith Baptist Church, 1807 S. Kentucky Ave., with the Rev. Miles Grismore officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given to the Faith Baptist Church.

Lillian was born on Jan. 17, 1921, in Canton, S.D., to Axel and Jorgine (Stølen) Soderberg. She lived in Canton, S.D., for five years and then lived in the Beloit Children’s Home in Beloit, Iowa, for 10 years.

In 1936, Lillian was given a home with Albert and Tillie Johnson of Woden, and lived with the Johnsons until Feb. 18, 1940. On that day, Lillian married Dale Howard Pitkin of Miller, Iowa. They began a family north of Forest City, Iowa, and in 1941 they moved to Miller, Iowa, to farm until 1958. In 1958 they bought their last farm, south of Mason City, and lived there until retirement in 1988. They moved to Mason City in 1988 and lived there until 2006.

Lillian was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Forest City, Iowa, Grace Baptist Church, Mason City, Iowa, and Faith Baptist Church in Mason City.

Lillian is survived by children, Ronald Pitkin and wife, Julie, of Nashville, Tenn., Lowell Pitkin, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Barbara Connolly and husband, Steve, of Chicago, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Norma Thuestad and husband, Bud, of Rochelle, Illinois.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters; husband, Dale Howard Pitkin; and daughter-in-law Karin Pitkin.

MASON CITY — Leonard John Mayer, 81, of 1021 N. Pierce Ave., Mason City, died Monday (Sept. 25, 2006) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Leonard John Mayer was born on June 24, 1925, at Stacyville, son of Paul and Anna (Meyer) Mayer. As a young boy, Leonard moved with his family to Riceville where he attended school. He enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during World War II in the Philippines. After his honorable discharge in 1946 he returned to Riceville.

He was united in marriage to Charlene Van Every in 1949. Leonard farmed in the Riceville area and worked at Oliver Implement in Charles City for several years. He retired from farming full time in 1973 and continued to hobby farm for many years. In 2004, he moved to Mason City.

He loved his family, country and church. Leonard enjoyed fishing, dancing, camping, traveling and playing cards.

He was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville, and most recently, Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. Leonard was a member of the Osage VFW and Riceville American Legion.

Leonard is survived by his special friend, Claretta Riha, of Mason City; four children: Jerry (Janet) Mayer, of Winterset, Carol (LeRoy) Janssen, of Osage, Randy (Dorothy) Mayer, of Riceville, and Crystal Pope, of Mason City; seven grandchildren: Jennifer Miller, John and Michelle Janssen, Shawn Mayer, Kari and Karl Kozak, and Christopher Pope; six great-grandchildren; Jeneca and Michelle Miller, Jessie Gerdes, Cheyenne Cullen, Dalton Janssen and Brennan Mayer; one brother, Bill (Marvel) Mayer, of Riceville; three sisters: Ruth Condon, of New Haven, Kathleen Hummel, of Riceville, and Mary Shane, of Riceville; brother-in-law, Dick Niedert, of Waterloo; sister-in-law, Myrna Mayer, of Portland, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth P. Hausman

MASON CITY — Ruth P. Hausman, 85, of Mason City, formerly of New Hampton, died Sunday (Sept. 24, 2006) at USA Healthcare in Mason City of natural causes.

She was born Aug. 13, 1921, in Ionia, daughter of Joseph and Anna Benishek Kirner. She married Donald Hausman on June 29, 1940, in Waverly. He preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1985.

Mrs. Hausman was a homemaker, and she always put family first.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald D. (Lenora) Hausman, of Salt Lake City, Utah, David L. (Lucy) Hausman, of Manly, and Douglas D. (Tracy) Hausman, of West Des Moines; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and four sisters, Elsie Carr, Duane Kirner, Erma Murphy and Wilma Davidson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, 3146 Kimball Ave., Waterloo, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Ruby Evelyn Stromer, the daughter of John and Viola (Robbins) Goll, was born Sept. 29, 1908, on a farm southwest of Garner. She attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and graduated from Garner High School in 1926. She received her teaching certificate and taught in the rural schools of Hancock County.

On Feb. 13, 1929, she was married to Aaron Stromer at Peace Reformed Church parsonage south of Garner. They made their home on a farm south of Garner. Ruby enjoyed gardening, crafts, playing cards and wintering in Texas.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church where she was active in the women’s fellowship, adult bible study and was a Sunday school teacher. She belonged to the Liberty Belles and Sunshine Club, was a 4-H leader for many years and served on the Hancock County Extension Council.

Ruby is survived by her daughters, Vivian Bovenmyer of Garner and Marian (Allan) DeWitt of Garner; daughters-in-law, Harriet Stromer of West Des Moines and Thelma (Robert) Gates of Lake Tahoe, Nev.; 13 grandchildren, Linda (Doug) Upmeyer, Michelle (Joel) Doble, Pam (Robert) Birkenholz, David (Kim) Stromer, Terry (Julie) Stromer, Carol (Ken) Knight, Annette Lowe, Richard (Nibal) Stromer, Russell (Kristen) Stromer, Kent (Rebecca) Bovenmyer, Joleen (Steve) Rolland, Jon (Glynis) DeWitt and Vicki (William) Adkins; 34 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lola Goll and Mildred Bredlow, both of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

HAMPTON — Velma J. Pandil, 78, 1720 Central Ave. E. in Hampton, died Monday (Sept. 25, 2006) at the Franklin General Hospital following a brief illness.

A Celebration of Life Service by Church of Living Word will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at the Lighthouse of Life in Hampton, by Pastor Jon Anderson. A gathering will take place following the service at the Tower Center. Inurnment will be at the Hampton Cemetery.

Survivors include a brother, Melvin F. “Whitey” Pandil of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Alethea M. Imerman and Dorothy A. Abbas, both of Hampton, and Genevieve J. Borcherding, of Latimer; and many nieces and nephews.

Her parents, and three brothers, Roger, Junior, and Marvin; a niece Paula; a nephew Todd; and a great-nephew Patrick preceded her in death.

Velma was born March 24, 1928 in Ft. Dodge, the daughter of John and Jergena (Nielsen) Pandil. She was a 1945 graduate of Hampton High School. Velma worked at a cleaners for 5 years, for Maytag for 5 years, was an owner of a small café in Hampton for 6 years, worked for the Hampton Chronicle for 4 years, and for Metro Litho, a printing company, in Oak Forest, Illinois from 1967 until her retirement in January of 1992.

She was a member of the Church of the Living Word in Hampton. Velma enjoyed fishing, bowling, and crossword puzzles.

Gene H. Oulman

OWATONNA, Minn. — Gene H. Oulman, 83, of Owatonna, died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2006) at Homestead Hospice.

He was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Rock Falls, Iowa, the son of Nathan and Alma (Howe) Oulman. Gene graduated from Mason City High School and went on to graduate from Iowa State University. While at Iowa State, he was enlisted in the U.S. Navy and played college basketball.

He married Violet Willadsen Sept. 30, 1951, in Newell, Iowa. In 1952, the couple moved to Wichita, Kan., where Gene worked for Boeing Aircraft until 1955.

They moved back to Iowa where Gene operated his family’s rental cottages on Clear Lake and worked with his brother at the Clear Lake bowling alley.

In 1961, Gene bought Fairlanes Bowl in Owatonna, operating it until 1969. Gene then managed Sno-Bird Lanes in Northfield and later returned to Fairlanes Bowl working for Gary Staats.

Gene was a member of the American Legion, Elks and Eagles. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed jazz music and carpentry.

He is survived by his wife, Violet Oulman, of Owatonna; daughter, Cristy Huntington, of Owatonna; sons, Thomas Oulman of Owatonna and David (and Amy) Oulman, of Owatonna; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Michaelson Funeral Home, 1930 Austin Road in Owatonna, Minn. Burial will be in Owatonna Memorial Gardens.

CHARLES CITY — Leon G. Chroup, 86, a resident of Riverside Senior Living, 209 Park Drive, Suite #19, Charles City, passed away early Wednesday morning (Sept. 27, 2006) at his residence, with family at his side.

Leon George Chroup was born on Jan. 28, 1920, at Morton, Minn., the son of George and Grace (Piersol) Chroup. He attended school at Delhi, Minn., and graduated in 1937. Following graduation he worked at Schmidt Plumbing and Heating in Charles City. Leon married Adeline “Addie” Venz of Charles City on Oct. 20, 1940, in Fountain, Minn.

In 1943, he joined the Navy, the 78th Sea Bees Battalion. Leon was honorably discharged, having served during World War II. He was stationed in New Guinea, the Admiralty Islands and Okinawa.

After returning to the States, he continued working in sanitary engineering and became a Master Plumber, and was later employed with Mills-Helmers in Charles City, from which he retired in 1996. Leon had lived in Charles City for 59 years.

Some of his greatest joys were to go fishing with his son-in-law, Richard, and his grandson, Brian, and tending to his garden.

Leon was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served on various church boards, was past president of the church council and a former usher in the church. His community involvement included being a past Boy Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, past member of the Knights of Pythias, V.F.W., Elks and Moose lodge and current member of the Heritage Club, all of Charles City.

DeeAnn Hassebroek

BUFFALO CENTER — DeeAnn Hassebroek, 63, of Buffalo Center, died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2006) at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

Funeral services for DeeAnn will be 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Buffalo Center Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Perry Aalgaard officiating. Burial will be at Olena Mound Cemetery, also in Buffalo Center.

Friends may greet her family at the visitation from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

DeeAnn Marie Hassebroek was born on June 17, 1943, in Algona to Albin and Helen (Christ) Nelson. She spent her early childhood on a farm west of Lakota. In 1955, she and her family moved to Buffalo Center. After graduating from Buffalo Center High School in 1961, she married her classmate and high school sweetheart, Robert Hassebroek, on Aug. 12, 1962.

She and Bob lived in Mankato, Minn., and Buffalo Center before Bob became the manager of the Midland Co-Op Oil Station in Swea City. In 1964 they moved to the home farm northeast of Buffalo Center, where they lived until 1985. In 1985, she and Bob moved into a home on the east side of Buffalo Center and in November of 2005 moved into their apartment building.

While her children were young, DeeAnn worked for several years as a nurses aide at the Buffalo Center Hospital until it closed in 1976. She then was a homemaker while her children finished school. In 2002, she decided she needed a new challenge and began working as a teacher’s aide for the North Iowa Community School District.

DeeAnn was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was in the first class confirmed in the new church. She taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years.

An avid reader, she was a member of the Ladies Literary Circle and was the county Literary Circle president for several years. Bowling was DeeAnn’s favorite hobby for 30-plus years and she served as league secretary for many years. Her greatest joy was her family and her four grandchildren.

On Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at the age of 63 years, three months and nine days, DeeAnn passed away at the Albert Lea Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Robert, of Buffalo Center; her daughter, Darla Hassebroek, of Des Moines; her son, Steve (Sharla) Hassebroek of Buffalo Center; four grandchildren: Morgan, Sam, Rachel and Ben; her father, Albin Nelson, of Buffalo Center; three brothers: Alan (Anita) Nelson of Grain Valley, Mo.; Lowell (Kay) Nelson of Aurora, Colo.; Donovan (Phyllis) Nelson of Littleton, Colo.; her sister: Naomi (Bill) Limberg, of Blue Springs, Mo.; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, a host of relatives and many dear friends.

DeeAnn was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Nelson; two children, David and Sheila; and by two brothers, James and Eric Nelson.

James Richard Carpenter was born Jan. 8, 1948, at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City to John Richard and Ella Edna (Kiefer) Carpenter. He was the sixth child of eight born to his parents.

Jim was baptized at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. He began his early education at McKinley Elementary School and continued his schooling in Mason City. Jim moved to the Dubuque and Cedar Rapids area approximately 30 years ago.

Jim was disabled numerous years ago due to a heart condition. Prior to his illness, Jim was employed as an auto mechanic. Throughout his life, he found great pleasure in tinkering and wrenching on cars. Jim was a private person who appreciated being outdoors in the fresh air. He enjoyed playing pool in his spare time and watching television and movies, especially anything science fiction.

Jim will be a cherished memory to all who have shared in his life.

He is survived by his daughter, Tammi Burns, of Mason City; his son, David Carpenter, of Cedar Rapids; his granddaughter, Tabitha Carpenter, of Cedar Rapids; his sisters, Betty (Gale) Brierly, of Nora Springs, and Dorothy Carpenter and Joanne Carpenter, both of Mason City; his brothers, John “Pat” Patterson, of Mason City, Robert “Bob” Carpenter, of Mandeville, La. and Jerry (Lovella) Carpenter, of Mason City; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Rosemary G. Ellis

Rosemary G. Ellis, 65, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006.

Mrs. Ellis was born Dec. 19, 1940, in Stacyville, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Mary Gerbig. She married Clinton Ellis on Dec. 9, 1967, in Little Cedar, Iowa.

Mrs. Ellis was employed as a production assembler for Comstock Creations in Bodo Park, was hostess for years for K-Bob’s Restaurant and a manager for the Atrium Restaurant.

She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. Her other pastimes included bowling, archery, deer bow hunting and shopping.

Mrs. Ellis had excellent people skills and made friends wherever she went, touching many lives.

She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Gerbig; and her brother, Lenard Gerbig.

Mrs. Ellis is survived by her husband, Clifton; her mother, Mary Adams Gerbig, of Osage; sons, Mark Everson and Randy Everson, of Rochester, Minn., and Doug Everson, of San Francisco, Calif.; daughters, Kim Foreman, of Farmington, N.M., Deborah Bohmbach, of Hager City, Wis., and Anita Lopez, of Durango, Colo.; brothers, Melvin Gerbig and Lloyd Gerbig, of Osage; sister, Jeanine Kockler, of Hanlontown; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

GARNER — Ruth V. Brown, 95, of Garner, died Thursday (Sept. 28, 2006) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Ruth Veronica Brown, the daughter of Ferdnand and Amelia (Stiehl) Gelner, was born Sept. 13, 1911, on a farm south of Forest City. She attended school at Madison Township No. 6.

On Oct. 3, 1933, she was married to Emery M. Brown at the United Methodist parsonage in Garner. To this union three children were born, Rachel, Marlene and Alan. They made their home on the family farm west of Garner. Ruth continued to live on the farm after Emery passed away in 1998. Ruth was active throughout her life

She loved being a farmer’s wife, raising chickens, milking cows and gardening. She was very active in 4-H as a young girl and later as a 4-H leader. She also was selected as a 4-H Queen of Iowa in her youth.

Ruth loved to whistle. She whistled on WHO Radio and several other stations around the state. She enjoyed making afghans for all her grandchildren, quilting with the Methodist Quilters and, especially, oil painting.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW and taught Sunday school. She belonged to Hancock County Historical Society, Armstrong House, HCMH Auxiliary, Garfield Homemakers Club and Madison County Federated Club.

Ruth is survived by her daughters, Rachel Jones and companion, Ron Fontana, of Ankeny and Marlene Stupka and husband, Clarence, of Ankeny; daughter-in-law, Cathy Brown, of Garner; 11 grandchildren, Michael Jones, Jeff (Diane) Jones and children, Joe, Jessica and Jimmy, David (Melissa) Jones and children, Blair, Cole and Jenna, Matt (Amber) Jones and children, Kienan, Ryle, Santiago and Jacy, Tim (Julie) Stupka and children, Molly, Staci and Joey, Jane (Dave) Bauman and children, Brittany and Austin, Steven (Kam) Stupka and children, Jordan, Ashley, Steven and Kendrick, Carrie Coons and children, Amanda and Bryan, Nathan (Amy) Stupka and twin sons, Dylan and Nickolas, Aaron Brown and Ryan (Shaunte) Brown and daughter, Aleah; a sister, Doris Isaacson, of Northwood; sisters-in-law, Blanche Gelner of Britt, and Bertha Brown, of Garner; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Robert Carl Wolff was born May 21, 1928, in Mason City, the son of Carl F. and Eva (Dennis) Wolff. Bob attended Mason City schools and enlisted in the United States Army on May 3, 1946, serving in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 6, 1947.

Robert was united in marriage to Betty Beisel on June 6, 1949, at the First Baptist Church in Mason City. To this union a son was born. They made their home in Mason City for several years, moving to Braidwood, Ill., and they lived there for 38 years. Bob was an instructor for 15 years at Greer Tech, a school for heavy equipment operations. Bob worked for Chicago Area 150 as an engineer until his retirement. Bob and Betty returned to Mason City in 1995, after the death of their son, Roger.

Bob enjoyed tinkering in the garage, woodworking, gardening, and taking trips with Betty on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. His greatest love was spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion, and the Moose.

Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Wolff, of Mason City; sisters, Lila Paulsen of Mason City, Marg Swann of Mason City, Lavonne Lemoine of Napa Valley, Calif., Dorothy Bohl of Mason City, and Norma Esther Edgington; niece, Betty (Terry) Williams, of Mason City, along with many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Eva Wolff; son, Roger Wolff; one brother, Warren Wolff; two sisters, Gertrude “Bunny” Sandahl, and Iline Wold; and mother and father-in-law, Daniel and Marguerite Beisel.

Carl M. Little

MASON CITY — Carl M. Little, 83, of Mason City, formerly of Ames and Garner, died Wednesday (Sept. 27, 2006) at The Manor in Mason City.

Carl Marcus Little, the son of George Joseph and Gladys Lucile (Comstock) Little, was born June 23, 1923, at Aberdeen, S.D. He graduated from Bath High School in 1942 and attended one year of college at South Dakota State College. He served his country during World War II in both theaters as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy.

On Dec. 27, 1946, he married Lois Jean Hawthorne of Pittsburgh, Pa. They lived in South Dakota where Carl farmed and finished his bachelor’s degree at South Dakota State College. After a brief time working in livestock sales in Billings, Mont., he began his career as a County Agricultural Extension agent working for both Purdue University and Iowa State University. While in Indiana, he earned his master’s degree from Purdue.

Carl served Hancock County for 11 years from 1970 to 1981. He then sold real estate for Gibbs Realty in Garner for a few years before retiring. Carl had been a Mason City resident for a year having lived previously in Ames for 13 years and in Garner for 22 years.

He was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames and Bethel Masonic Lodge in Garner.

Carl is survived by two sons, Dennis (Cathy Jo) Little of Ellijay, Ga., and David (Laura) Little of Mason City; a daughter, Beth Ann Little, of Naperville, Ill.; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Johnson of Aberdeen, S.D., and Phyllis Gillies of Watertown, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lois Little; parents; two brothers, Joseph Little and an infant brother, Robert; and a sister, Edna Little Siefkes, of Heckla, S.D.

Inurnment will be at a later date in the Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.
