Jamie J. Mathiason

BELMOND — Jamie J. Mathiason, 91, of Belmond, formerly of Rowan, passed away Friday (Aug. 4, 2006) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at the United Church of Rowan in Rowan, Iowa. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street in Clarion and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jamie, daughter of Ole and Hannah (Peterson) Johnson, was born July 9, 1915, in Gorham, N.D. At an early age she moved to Worthington, Minn. and then went to live with her aunt, Sarah Kleveland in Badger, IA. Jamie returned to her parents in Eagle Grove, Iowa, when she was ready for the second grade. She was confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran Church and finished her education in the Eagle Grove schools.

Jamie married Donald Lyons on Jan. 4, 1933. To this union two children were born: Joyce Darlene Lyons and Richard Duane Lyons.

Donald passed away on Sept. 15, 1957. On Sept. 1, 1961 she married Donald Mathiason.

Jamie lived most of her married life in Rowan where she was very active in her church, women’s clubs, 4-H, cutting hair, quilting, gardening and any other jobs that needed to be done. She also enjoyed working as a school cook in Rowan for several years where she fed all “her” kids. Jamie also worked for Dr. A.M. Nelson in Belmond and felt a great deal of satisfaction from her experiences.

After her marriage to Donald Mathiason, she helped him in the operation of the Rowan Plumbing and Heating Store. During these years she made quilts for her children and grandchildren. The grandchildren loved to go visit and help with canning, cooking, and eating her Norwegian kringlas. Several weeks each summer were spent fishing with family and friends, and she and Don made many trips to California to visit his family. Jamie will be remembered as a very friendly, loving person who loved her church. She was a member of the United Church of Rowan.

Jamie is survived by her husband, Don Mathiason, of Belmond; daughter, Joyce and husband, Gary Sells, of Kirksville, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Lyons, of Clarion; five grandchildren: Linnette Sells and husband, Brian Vanderhoof, of Norcross, Ga., Laurine Knowles and husband, Russ, of Brookfield, Mo., Mark Sells and wife, Susan, of Rolla, Mo., James Sells and wife, Julie, of Moberly, Mo., and Duane Lyons and wife, Mary of Belmond; 10 great-grandchildren: Alex Stone and wife, Nicole, Todd Vanderhoof, Kendra (Knowles) Martin and husband, Bradley, Benjamin Sells, Jacob Sells, Mary Beth Sells, Elaina Sells Hannah Sells, William Sells, and Emily Lyons. Also surviving Jamie are three step- grandchildren: Jani (Atkinson) Breu and husband, Chris, Jeremy Atkinson, Joy (Atkinson) Viteritto and husband, Brian. She also has two great-great grandchildren: Mitchell and Katherine Stone; four step great-great-grandchildren, Landen and Luke Breu, Brenna and Cara Viteritto; two sisters-in-law, Esther Johnson and Daphne Johnson; plus numerous nieces and nephews, and members of the Mathiason family.

Jamie is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; son, Richard Lyons (October 27, 1974) one sister, Gladys Cleveland and her husband, Linsworth; two brothers, Ogden and Herbert Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jamie Mathiason family, which will divide the memorials among several different organizations.

Daryl Dean Carlson

NORTHWOOD — Daryl Dean Carlson, 67, died Friday (Aug. 4, 2006) at his home in Northwood after a courageous battle with cancer.

A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2006, at the United Methodist Church, Bolan, with Pastor Robert Cumings officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Avenue South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Daryl Dean Carlson was born on Oct. 10, 1938, in Bolan, Iowa, the son of Arthur C. and Viola (Kenison) Carlson. He grew up on the family farm, attended country school and graduated from Kensett High School. He was married to Jo Ann Gullickson and to that union were born three children.

Daryl farmed near Bolan and Grafton until 1982 when he moved to Northwood. He worked for a number of businesses in and around Northwood, including Worthco Feed, Carroll George, Incorporated, and Shade Tree Liquors. He was also an auctioneer and operated Viking Auto Sales.

He maintained an active interest in farming throughout his life. He enjoyed baseball and participated in slow pitch softball in Kensett well into his 40s.

More recently his interests included vintage tractor rides, trading stocks, old Western movies and sharing conversation with family and friends. Daryl particularly enjoyed participating in the effort to bring the Diamond Jo Casino to Worth County, including his trips to lobby the state legislature in Des Moines and hosting cyclists during RAGBRAI.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister Jacqueline (Howard) Erdmann of Northwood; three children, Kevin (Lisa) Carlson of Christiansburg, Va.; Kim (John) Kraft of Winter Haven, Fla: and Kari (Kirk) Stoa of Maple Grove, Minn.; ten grandchildren, Melanie and Bryce Carlson; Kyle, Ryan and Todd Kraft; and Taylor, Nick, Jana, Joshua, and Emma Stoa. Also surviving Daryl are his niece Pam (Don) Anderson of Northwood and nephew, Craig (Joni) Erdmann of Richmond, Va.

Mary ‘Rose’ Rosita Frank

MASON CITY— Mary “Rose” Rosita Frank, 52, of 1173 Onyx Court, Mason City, died on Monday (July 31, 2006) at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Minnesota, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Monday, August 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th St. S.E., Mason City, with a prayer service being held at 4:30 p.m.

According to Rose’s wishes, her body was cremated. A memorial service in Santa Cruz, Calif., will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be given in Rose’s name to the American Cancer Society.

Melisande ‘Sandy’ Krieger

MASON CITY — Melisande “Sandy” Krieger, 59, of 8 Woodbine Road, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2006) at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia, Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Stiles, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., Mason City and one hour prior to services at the church, Tuesday.

Memorials may be given to the Sandy Krieger Memorial Fund.

Melisande Krieger was born June 9, 1947, at Chicago, Ill., a daughter of Arthur and Lorna (Zweifel) Carlson.

Sandy met Bob Krieger at the college bookstore and was later united in marriage on June 22, 1968 in Chicago. Sandy received a degree in nursing at the University of Illinois-Chicago Circle campus. They moved to Minneapolis, Minn. where Bob started his career with Sperry.

After moving to the Mason City area, Sandy returned to college at Buena Vista College and earned a degree in education. She substitute taught in the Mason City, Clear Lake, Garner and Rockwell schools. She later taught at Gerard School, Mason City.

Sandy enjoyed creating scrapbooks, quilting at Beehive Quilting, and gardening, especially growing roses. She loved her pets and also raised alpacas.

She was a member of Sisterhood of Gamma Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority.

She is survived by a son, Michael Krieger, Mason City; a daughter, Ashley Krieger, Mason City; a brother, Quill Carlson, Lombard, Ill.; two sisters, Lonarta Walsh, Cary Ill.; Aleeta Murawski, Woodale, Ill.; several nieces and nephews; in-laws, Robert and Shirley Krieger, Elk Grove Village, Ill.; a brother in-law and a sister in-law.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Robert W. B. Krieger on August 1, 2004.

Edith L. Thompson

LELAND — Edith L. Thompson, 99, of Leland, died Saturday (Aug. 5, 2006) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will take place at Winnebago Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Edith Louise (Hermanson) Thompson was born on Aug. 26, 1906, in Winnebago County, to parents, Sever and Ida (Ingebretson) Hermanson. She was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills. Edith was raised on a farm north of Leland, and attended school in Leland.

On April 12, 1936, Edith was united in marriage with Arthur Thompson. The couple made their home farming near Leland, where they raised their family. Edith enjoyed her family, and spent time being an attentive wife, mother, and homemaker.

She loved flowers, sewing, bird watching, trains, and reading. She will be remembered for her dedication to children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In 2001, Edith became a resident of the IOOF Home in Mason City, where she passed away on Aug. 5, 2006.

Survivors include her children, Marshall Thompson and his wife, Mary, of Lake Mills, Richard Thompson and his wife, Wilma, of Forest City, and Sharon Walsh and her husband, Mike, of Mason City; eight grandchildren, Sherylee Gasper and her husband, Terry, Travis Thompson, Dana Thompson and his wife, Stacy, Jeff Thompson and his wife, Becky, Tom Walsh, Teri Vatterott and her husband, Pierce, Anthony Walsh and his wife, Tammi, and Tim Walsh; 13 great-grandchildren, Tom Halloran, Luke Halloran, Wrenna Walsh, Mason Walsh, Hannah Walsh, Leah Walsh, Timmy Thompson, Tyler Thompson, Jonas Thompson, Caroline Thompson, Cory Knutson, Tyler Gasper and Marissa Gasper; four stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Ada Youngerman, of Osage; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur, in April of 1992; son, Steven Thompson, in October of 2001; a great-granddaughter, Katelyn Halloran, in December of 1989; and two brothers, Elmer Hermanson and Charles Hermanson.

Frances J. Barker

MASON CITY — Frances J. Barker, 85, died Saturday (Aug. 5, 2006) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Jo Frahm-Watkins of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell, Iowa.

Fran was born on Feb. 15, 1921, in Grinnell, the daughter of Charles Morey and Nellie Frances (Cooper) Pilgrim. She grew up in Grinnell, attended school there, and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1938.

She married D. Keith Barker on May 5, 1942, in Grinnell, Iowa. Together they raised two sons, Douglas A. and Thomas L. Barker.

During the course of their marriage they lived in Wallace, Idaho; Dubuque, Clinton and Oelwein, Iowa; and Mason City where her husband, Keith, was the district manager for Interstate Power.

Fran was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Chapter KW-PEO, the Mason City Country Club and various other community and social organizations

Fran is survived by her sons, Douglas A. Barker and wife, Betsy, of New Albany, Ohio, and Thomas L. Barker, of Iowa City; cherished granddaughters, Jennifer Barker, of Milwaukee, Wis., Erin Sumpter and husband, Ryan, of Arlington, Va., and Emily Barker, of Rowley, Iowa; brothers, James Pilgrim, of Clinton, and Richard Pilgrim and wife, Shirley, of Nevada; many nieces and one nephew; dear friend, Sharon Tiedeman; and adopted family, Cathy and Paul Buren and sons, of Mason City.

Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Keith; parents; son, Richard J. Barker; brother, Charles Pilgrim Jr. and sister, Marilyn Pilgrim; sister-in-law, Doris Pilgrim; and brother-in-law, Bruce Barker.

Margaret A. Nielsen

CRYSTAL LAKE — Margaret A. Nielsen, 70, of Crystal Lake, died Saturday (Aug. 5, 2006) at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Friends may greet the family from 2 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at the American Legion in Crystal Lake. At Margaret’s request, her body has been donated to the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Margaret, the daughter of Louise and Elva Eenhuis, was born on Aug. 6, 1935.

Margaret married Harold Nielson on June 2, 1984. They resided on a farm south of Crystal Lake. For many years they owned and operated the Crystal Café until they retired.

She enjoyed her animals, wild birds and her many flower beds.

She is survived by her husband Harold; five sons: Daniel Eston, of the Philippines, Robert Nielsen, of Algona, Howard, of Forest City, Brian, of Crystal Lake and Gordy, of Crystal Lake; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Joretta (Walter) Riggle, of Glenville, Minn., Mary (Marshall) Thompson, of Lake Mills, Esther (Bill) Kirschbaum, of Forest City and Jeanette Dodd, of Lake Mills; one brother, Mike (Denise) Eenhuis. of Chapman, Kan. along with many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Elva Eenhuis; son, Monty; one sister, Lila; and two brothers, Robert and Lyle.

Raymond ‘Ray’ Gilbert

ALGONA — Raymond “Ray” Gilbert, 91, of Algona, died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2006) at the Algona Manor Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Algona, with the Rev. Dr. Mark E. Holmer officating. Burial will be in the State Line Union Cemetery in Petersburg, Minn.

Phillip L. Mitchell

FOREST CITY — Phillip L. Mitchell, 66, of St. Paul, formerly of Forest City, died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2007) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault, Minn., with Pastor Steve Crombie, pastor of the River Community Church, officiating. Interment will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City, with full military honors.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home.

Phillip LeVerne Mitchell, the son of Milo and Daisy (Wilson) Mitchell, was born on Aug. 17, 1939, in Forest City. He attended Forest City High School and graduated with the class of 1957. After high school, Phillip enlisted in the United States Air Force and was a telecommunications specialist. After his service time, Phillip began a 30-year career with Western Union as a computer technician and worked in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois.

On Sept. 30, 1967, he was united in marriage to Linda Laite in Bricelyn, Minn. They were later divorced. Phillip was a 26-year member of Alcoholics Anonymous in St. Paul.

He enjoyed shooting pool, bowling, reading, dancing and listening to country and polka music and going to fairs.

He is survived by a daughter, Sandi (Bob) Jones of Faribault; three grandchildren, David Jones, Amanda Sunken and Nicole “Nikki” Jones; a brother, Cecil (Karen) Mitchell of Forest City; a sister, Jeanette (Doyce) Michelson of Mt. Pleasant; his former wife, Linda Laite, of Bricelyn, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin sister at birth, Phyllis Mitchell; and by a brother, Darrell Mitchell.

Bruce Duayn Paine

WATERLOO — Bruce Duayn Paine, 66, of Waterloo, died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2006) at Allen Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 14, 1939, in Nora Springs, the son of Elbertis and Fannie Hoag Paine. Bruce graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1958. He married Arlene Treloar in 1958. They moved to Waterloo in 1963 and farmed for five years. Bruce eventually bought his business in 1965, which was a full-service gas station. He went into the RV line in 1976. In 1998, Bruce moved to his new building and location at 190 Plaza Drive in Elk Run Heights.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Waterloo; three children, Becky (Bill) DeRocher, of Des Moines, Jeffrey (Rosanne) Paine, of LaPorte City, and Todd (Mary) Paine, of Waterloo; five grandsons, Travis, Bryce, Brandon, Cody and Casey; one great-granddaughter, Kyra; one sister, Bettie Anton, of Winthrop; and two brothers, Billie Paine, of Evansdale, and Barrie Paine, of Dillon, Colo.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Bonnie Smith and Bobbie Paine.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial in Poyner Township Cemetery.

Public visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to the services today at the church.

Esther Monson

MASON CITY — Esther Monson, 89, of Mason City, passed away Sunday (Aug. 6, 2006) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at the Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Keith L. Scott officiating. A private family graveside service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 9, 2006, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Esther Monson was born Aug. 30, 1916, in Hancock County, near Stilson, daughter of Joseph and Tena (Sweers) Leerar. Esther attended country school near Stilson and was a member of the U.B. Church in Stilson.

In October of 1934, Esther was united in marriage to Leonard Monson. The couple spent most of their married life in the rural areas around Britt. They moved to Mason City in 1964.

Esther’s work life included domestic work, school cook and department store clerk. She retired from J.C. Penney, Mason City, in 1980.

She was an avid gardener and loved fishing and quilting. She took pride and joy in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Esther is survived by her daughter, Doris (Gerhard) Anderson, Ames; son, Dennis Monson, Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter-in-law, Susan Lubbert, Riceville; sister, Caroline Slagle, Missoula, Mont.; four granddaughters, Carol Higgins, Miami, Fla.; Amy Baldassare, Glen Ridge, N.J.; Samantha Souhrada, Waverly; and Katie Monson, Waterloo; two grandsons, Thomas Monson, Phoenix, Ariz.; and Tim Monson, Phoenix, Ariz.; and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Lillian Baldassare and Austin Souhrada.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; parents, one son, five brothers and two sisters.

Allen J. Berg

FERTILE — Allen J. Berg, 72, of Fertile, died Monday (Aug. 7, 2006) at his home in Fertile.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at the Fertile Lutheran Church with David Halverson, lay minister, officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood with military rites by the Northwood Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Allen Jene Berg, the son of Jeffrey and Marie (Bendickson) Berg, was born Dec. 26, 1933, at Northwood. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Northwood and attended school at Northwood until the 10th grade. Allen served his country in the U.S. Air Force, being stationed in California. He was honorably discharged in 1957 and returned home to Northwood.

On Sept. 3, 1960, he was married to Marsha Fox at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Mason City, Britt and in 1966 moved to Fertile. Allen was employed at Fertile Tile and Winnebago Industries in Forest City, which he retired from in 1996.

He enjoyed reading, fishing, collecting candy dishes, going to auctions, having coffee at Pronto, and especially spending time with his grandsons.

He was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church, had served on the Fertile City Council, Fertile Fire and Rescue and was a past member of the Fertile Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marsha, of Fertile; two children, Melinda Bartz, of Northwood, and Jeffrey Berg, of Fertile; two grandsons, Adam and Trevor Bartz of Northwood; three brothers, Benhart (Phyllis) Berg, of Northwood, James (Kathy) Berg, of Northwood and Darrell Berg, of Northwood; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Earl “Toad” Fox Jr. and his wife, Vivian, of Forest City; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers; a sister, Sharon; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Martinson.

Allen D. Pals

MASON CITY — Allen D. Pals, 58, of rural Warsaw, Mo., passed away Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2006) at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, Mo. He was born on Nov. 4, 1947, in Mason City, the son of Henry E. and Edna Johnson Pals.

Allen was raised around Mason City and entered the United States Navy in January of 1968, serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He was discharged in October of 1969.

On Dec. 12, 1970, he was united in marriage to Connie Motland in Glenville, Minn. They lived around Mason City until 1978 when they moved to Warsaw, Mo. They have lived in Warsaw ever since, except from 1981 until 1983 when they lived in Colorado. He worked in construction all of his working years, retiring in 2003.

He was a member of Labors Local #663 of Kansas City, and American Legion Post #217 of Warsaw. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing woodworking projects.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Peggy Endriss and Wanda Wessels.

He is survived by his wife, Connie, of the home; one son, Jason Pals and his wife, Loree, of Warsaw, Mo.; three granddaughters, Emilee Pals, Haylee Pals and Rylee Pals, also of Warsaw, Mo.; three brothers, Ronald Pals, and Jerald Pals, and his wife, Lois, all of Mason City, and Marvin Pals, of Sheffield; one sister, Patricia Enabnit, and her husband, Ronald, of Iola, Kan.; and other relatives and friends.

The body was to be cremated. The family will hold private memorial services at a later date.

Paul B. Nixt

GREENE — A funeral Mass for Paul B. Nixt, 80, of Greene, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Greene.

Paul B. Nixt was born April 18, 1926, in Union Township, Floyd County, a son of Louis Francis and Anna (Marzen) Nixt, and died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

He received his education in the Marble Rock public schools graduating in 1944. As a young man he worked on the family farm. On Aug. 29, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Scofield in Dubuque, Iowa. The following spring, Paul and Mary Lou started farming on their own six miles east of Greene where they remained until 1983, when they moved into town. While living on the farm, Paul had a habit of giving all the animals they had a nickname. In 1968, they established Nixt’s Candle Shop, which made and distributed candles throughout the United States. Mary Lou died on Oct. 23, 1985. Paul continued to operate the business until his retirement in 1989.

Living family members include two daughters: Sharon (John) Daub of Mason City and their children, Lois Spieker, mother of Joshua, Amanda, and Katie; Julie (Steve) Knecht, parents of Stephanie, William, Cassandra, Tony, Kayleen; John (Jene’) Daub, parents of Brandi Anne, J. T.; Laura Norton, mother of C.J., Erica, Cody, Zach; Chris (Thad) Evans, parents of Mary and Becca; Theresa “Terry” Schrage, of Bristow, and her children, Andrea (Jason) Webster, parents of Miranda; Doug Schrage and his son, Caden; and Samantha Schrage; four sons, George (Susan) Nixt, of Greene and their children, Tricia (Tom) Johnson, Becky Nixt and her son, Jacob, Eric (Jenni) Nixt, Tyler (Stephanie) Nixt, Jared Nixt, Stephen (Geri) Nixt and their daughter, Jessica, of St. Michael, Minn.; James (Laura Simpkins) Nixt and his daughter, Anna Nixt; Michael (Ruth) Nixt and their children, Matthew Nixt, Joan Nixt, David (Melissa) Nixt, Darrel Nixt, Michael Nixt Jr.; and one brother, Andrew (Marcella) Nixt, of Greene.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou; two children, Lois Ann Nixt and Mark Francis; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, son-in-law, Brad Schrage; his parents; two sisters, Mary Schoenfeldt and Norma Rottinghaus; and one brother, Cletus George Nixt.

CLEAR LAKE — Edmund “Ed” L. Vorland, 79, 516 S. 12th St. in Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jeff Ungs officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 W. in Mason City. Military honors will be presented by the Clear Lake VFW.

Ed was born June 29, 1927, at Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of Helge and Louise (Thompson) Vorland. He attended school at Vernon schools near Renwick, Iowa. He farmed with his family and worked at the elevator in Hardy, Iowa. Ed served in the United States Army.

He married Alice Mae Jensen on May 29, 1955, at Lake Lutheran Church, rural Goldfield, and they moved to rural Clear Lake where he farmed. He later farmed for Dr. Preston. He worked for Clear Lake Aluminum Co. and the City of Clear Lake until his retirement in 1993.

Ed loved camping, fishing, yard work, flowers, watching birds, puttering around the garage and watching sports on TV. Ed enjoyed his Sunday morning coffee and doughnut with the family. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Clear Lake VFW.

Ed is survived by his three children, Gene Vorland and his wife, Cathy, of Clear Lake, Louise Norris and her husband, Charlie, of Mason City, and Norman Vorland and his wife, Julie, of Hanlontown; six grandchildren, Jennifer Cash and her husband, Todd, Jason Norris and his wife, Julie, Eric Vorland, Sara Vorland, Jacob Vorland and Alyson Vorland; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Madalynn Cash; four brothers, Glen Vorland and his wife, Mavis, of Chokio, Minn., Herman Vorland and his wife, Marge, of Hardy, Iowa, Richard Vorland and his wife, Virginia, of Clear Lake, and Kenny Vorland and his wife, Marlene, of Hardy, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Vorland of Northwood and Florence Vorland of Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Alice (August 16, 1989); one sister, Pearl McClamrock; and three brothers, Nels, Howard and Eugene Vorland.

Wayne A. McNealy

OSAGE — Wayne A. McNealy, 60, of Osage, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2006) as the result of a traffic accident near Osage.

Wayne was born April 12, 1946, at New Hampton, the son of John and Ida (Janssen) McNealy. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict.

Wayne married Gloria Dockum on Nov. 27, 1971, at Deer Creek Lutheran Church near Carpenter. Gloria died Oct. 14, 1993. He owned and operated McNealy Sanitation in Osage for the past 27 years.

Wayne married Beverly (Voshell) Whitney on Dec. 21, 2001, in Osage. He was a lifetime member of the Osage VFW. Wayne donated his time and energy to many groups and organizations and their causes throughout the area.

He loved fishing and boating, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Wayne will be remembered as a very kind, giving, considerate, compassionate and empathetic person.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be at the Deer Creek Lutheran Cemetery, rural Carpenter, with Military Honors at the grave by Osage VFW Post 7920.

Frances Mary Graner was born on March 19, 1915, in Red Wing, Minn., the daughter of Thomas J. and Ada A. (Perkins) Seiz. She graduated from Red Wing High School.

Frances was united in marriage to Lewis F Graner in 1934 in Nora Springs. They lived in Mason City where they raised their family of seven children and owned Graner Shell Filling Station.

Frances enjoyed reading, trips to the casinos and visiting Red Wing, teaching her grandchildren how to play poker and gardening. She was member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Frances is survived by her children, Mildred “Millie” (Norman) Mondahl of Harrison, Alaska, Mary Lou (John) Behm of Mason City, Patricia (Larry) Szymeczek of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Barbara (John) Alitz of Runnels, Iowa, Lewie Jr. (Harriet) Graner of Casa Grande, Ariz., Jack (Cheryl) Graner of Glendale, Ariz., and Joan Evans (Joe Ricketts) of Mason City; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace Andersen, of California, along with other relatives and friends.

Sharie Ilene Polsdofer was born May 10, 1946, on a farm east of Klemme, a daughter of Arthur and Ella (Trana) Polsdofer. She attended and graduated from Rockwell High School. She was united in marriage with Bernie Michelson. Later she married Ronald Neumann.

Sharie attended Rockwell United Methodist Church. She worked in assembly for Unisys in Clear Lake.

Her family remembers her as a proud parent and grandparent who adored her grandchildren. Sharie loved to dance every Friday and Saturday at the VFW. She was always on the go and knew many people from everywhere, yet was a down-to-earth person.

Sharie is survived by her children, Laurie (David) Vorland of Ventura and Dean Michelson of Kanawha; grandchildren, Emily and Harley Vorland, Anthony Pigman, and James and Kyle Michelson; three brothers; and three sisters; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren, Amanda and Katie Vorland; sisters, Leona Hedrick, Elda, Mavis and Avis Polsdofer; and two sisters in infancy.
