** Raymond J. Quinones

MASON CITY — Raymond J. Quinones, age 62 of 917 8th S.W., died Tuesday (January 20, 1998) at his home in Mason City.

Arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E., Mason City.

** Elizabeth Olive Stillman

ALGONA — Elizabeth Olive "Betty" Stillman, 94, 2221 E. McGregor St., died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at the Algona Manor Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Dennis Secrease officiating. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. The body was cremated. Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Stillman was born Nov. 22, 1903, in Maxwell.

Survivors include two daughters, Marcia Jones, of Atlanta, Ga., and Ann Stillman, of Sarasota, Fla.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and one sister.

** Gaylord O. Holm

GARNER — Gaylord O. Holm, 88, of Garner, died Monday (Jan. 19, 1998) at the Concord Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Faith Lutheran Church, in Miller, with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating. Burial will be in Ellington Prairie Cemetery, rural Garner.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner.

Gaylord Orville Holm was born Aug. 28, 1909, on a farm northeast of Garner.

Survivors include his sister, Clara Holm, of Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

** Leo M. Skellenger

LAKE MILLS — Leo M. Skellenger, 84, formerly of Lake Mills, died Monday (Jan. 19, 1998) at his home in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, where other arrangements are incomplete.

** Nina Marie Dorr

BELMOND — Nina Marie Dorr, 86, of Belmond, died Sunday (Jan. 18, 1998) at the Belmond Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jack Paisley officiating. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, with a 2:30 p.m. parish Rosary and a 7 p.m. scriptural wake service. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Nina Marie Dorr was born Jan. 18, 1912 in Meservey.

Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Shirley Dorr, Montague, Mich.; and one sister, Mona Landsberg, Britt; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son and one sister.

CLEAR LAKE — Roma Jane (Mrs. Orvis) Sedars, 83, of 3714 N. Shore Drive, died Monday (Jan. 19, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, where other arrangements are incomplete.

HAMPTON — Merrildean Hanson, 73, died Friday (Jan. 16, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Gerald Condon officiating. Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery.

Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, was in charge of arrangements.

Merrildean Hanson was born March 15, 1924, in Ringsted.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Hanson of Hampton; two daughters, Cheryl Hanson of Mankato, Minn., and Kerri Mohwinkle of Aplington; one son, Kevin Hanson of Fenton; two sisters, Marcile Hansen of Fenton, and Lyllah Mae Norland of Mankato, Minn.; one brother, Lawrence Hanson, Cresco; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one brother, and one sister.

ROCKFORD — John H. Cook, 91, of Rockford, died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 1998) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

MASON CITY — Raymond J. "Ray" Quinones, 62, of 917 8th S.W., died Tuesday, (Jan. 20, 1998) at his home in Mason City.

Funeral services are tentatively planned for 11:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 26, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. Sunday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E., Mason City. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel. Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

ROCKWELL — Robert J. Curley, 68, of Rockwell, died Wednesday, (Jan. 21, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Hospital.

MASON CITY — Reta Mae Marty, 98, of 76 Linden Drive, died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Richard D. Scheerer officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Memorials may be given to First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Reta was born Nov. 17, 1899, in Klemme, Iowa, the daughter of country Dr. Alexander Dwight and Mae (White) Spooner.

Reta was raised in the Klemme and LuVerne area and graduated from LuVerne High School. She would later graduate from Coe College with her teaching certificate.

Reta married George S. Marty on June 1, 1928, at Waterloo, Iowa. The Marty's were long time residents of Mason City where Mr. Marty practiced law.

Reta taught English at Madrid, Iowa, and at Mason City High School.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Kappa Delta Sorority, past president of Women's Club, past president of Y.W.C.A., 67-year member PEO Chapter GN, Novel Club, U.G.L. Club, Browning Society and Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include one son, George S. Marty Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Winnetka, Ill.; daughter, Jean E. Nelson and husband, Daniel, of Lake San Marcos, Calif. and Alexandria, Minn.; five grandchildren, Susan McDonnell, of Copell, Texas; Douglas Marty, of Williamsburg, Va.; Marty Dutch, of Covina, Calif.; Kris Nelson, of Portland, Ore.; and Julie Carlson, of Evansville, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Timothy, Andrew, Jonathan, Anneliese, Austin, Taylor, Ryan, Hunter and McKenna.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1975; and four brothers, Lloyd, Dwight, Maynard and Victor.

** Raymond M. Ries

ELMA — Raymond M. Ries, 80, of Elma, died Monday (Jan. 19, 1998) at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma, after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both at Elma.

Visitation will be held from 3 until 8 p.m. today at the Conway Funeral Home, 508 Maple St., Elma, with a 4 p.m. Rosary, a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary at 5 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. parish Scripture service.

Raymond M. Ries was born March 6, 1917, in North Washington.

Survivors include his wife, Ardell; three sons, LeRoy, of Mason City; Lyle, of Alta Vista; and Dale, of Beaverton, Ore.; two daughters, Sr. Phyllis Ann R.S.M., of Little Falls, Minn., and Rosalie Weber, of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, his twin brother, Ralph, of Elma; and Leonard, of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, his parents, his stepmother and two brothers.

** Roma Jane Sedars

CLEAR LAKE — Roma Jane (Mrs. Orvis) Sedars, 83, of 3714 N. Shore Drive, died Monday (Jan. 19, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or the American Cancer Society in her memory.

Roma J. Sedars was born Oct. 2, 1914, in Britt, Iowa, the daughter of Pearl and Ruth (Conger) Routh. Roma graduated from Guthrie Center High School.

She married Orvis R. Sedars on Feb. 14, 1940, in Perry, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Sedars moved to Mason City in 1945, where Mr. Sedars continued his career in the automobile profession.

Roma was always interested in the automobile profession and lived to see her dream come true with the opening of Sedars Auto Park between Mason City and Clear Lake.

In the mid 1950s, the Sedars lived between Mason City and Clear Lake on farms they owned and in 1961 moved to Clear Lake.

Roma currently served as vice-president of Sedars Motor Company Inc.

She taught herself to play the piano and was a past member of the Tri-T Chapter AQ and 20th Century Club. Roma was a member of Today's Club, the United Methodist Church, in Clear Lake, and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Roma was an avid student of the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies.

Survivors include daughter, Jo Ann Sedars, of Clear Lake; son, Jerry W. Sedars and his wife, Debra, of Clear Lake; grandsons, Joseph Andrew "Andy" Alexander and his wife, Stephanie, of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; Jason Sedars Alexander, of Plymouth, Minn.; Jayme Wayne Sedars, of Clear Lake; Travis Westly Sedars, of Clear Lake; and Dustin Dale Sedars, of Clear Lake; two great-granddaughters, Madison Emily and Victoria Anne Alexander, of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; and one sister, Martha Lou Miller and husband, Richard, of Kalona, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orvis in 1988; three brothers; and one sister.

** Lenora G. Colburn

NORA SPRINGS — Lenora G. Colburn, 79, of St. Mark's Apartments, Austin, Minn., formerly of Nora Springs, died Monday (Jan. 19, 1998) at the St. Mark's Lutheran Home, Austin, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Memorials may be directed to St. Luke's Lutheran Church or to an organization of one's choice in memory of Lenora G. Colburn.

Lenora Georgia Colburn was born May 31, 1918, at Racine, Minn., the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Schatzeberg) Ottjes.

She was united in marriage to John Colburn on Nov. 11, 1937, at the Pleasant Valley Parsonage in Racine, Minn.

She was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and served as the janitor for the church for several years.

Lenora enjoyed her quilting group and volunteering at the Nora Springs Care Center.

She liked spending time gardening and raising flowers, making jellies, canning and freezing produce from her garden. She also enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include one son, Wayne Colburn and his wife, Toshie, Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Verna Miller and her husband, Jay, Austin, Minn.; and Deanna Hicks and her husband, Jim, Chelsea, Minn.; nine grandchildren, John Colburn, Lori Ketchum, Patty Corona, Ken Colburn, Tom Colburn, Todd Miller, Heather Hicks, Ben Hicks, and Matt Hicks; fifteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Jennie Beise, Stewartville, Minn.; and Edna Holland, Brownsdale, Minn.; two brothers, Elwin Ottjes, Grand Meadow, Minn.; Ernest Ottjes and his wife, Marian, Stewartville, Minn.; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Esther Ottjes, Austin, Minn.; Eunice and John Roberts, Bemidji, Minn.; and Claude and Tag Colburn, Grand Meadow, Minn.; many friends and relatives; and a special friend, Janet Hicks, Nora Springs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1990, her parents, five sisters and one brother.

** Eva Irene Larson

BELMOND — Eva Irene Larson, 89, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 1998) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church, Belmond, with Father Jack Paisley officiating. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 2 until 9 p.m. Friday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, with a 2:30 p.m. Parish rosary and an 8 p.m. Scriptural wake service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Eva Irene (Becker) Larson, the daughter of Mathias and Rosalia "Fannie" (Heath) Becker was born Dec. 14, 1908, at Garner, Iowa.

She graduated from Garner High School and came to work as a secretary at the sugar beet plant in Belmond, where she met Dr. A.M. Larson, who was practicing dentistry in Belmond. They were married on May 31, 1930, and celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Eva was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Belmond and she was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas. She belonged to Kensington Club, Tally Ho Bridge Club, Clarmond and Belmond Country Clubs.

Eva liked to fish, play golf, bowl and play bridge. Babysitting, baking, and cooking for her family were her biggest enjoyments in life. In 1984, Eva was Belmond's Mother Of The Year.

She was a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center from 1994 until her death.

Eva is survived by her daughters, Janyce Kinseth, of Belmond, and Judy Long, of West Des Moines; a son, Larry Larson and his wife, Donna, of Carmel, Calif.; grandchildren, Julie Kalkwarf, Jane Turner, Jeff Kinseth, Jill Bedell, Jody Kinseth, Mark Larson, Lori Bernecker, Kathleen Borgeson, Scott Long, Tim Long, Larry Long, and Elizabeth Goode; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters-in-law, Mabel Sybilrud, Pearl Larson and Dorothy Higgins, all of Belmond; and Lillian Engel, of Fort Worth, Texas; and one brother-in-law, Alfred Petersen, of Clear Lake, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. A.M. Larson in 1995; two sisters; and two brothers.

** Brian K. Garvin

MANKATO, MINN. — Brian K. Garvin, 40, died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 1998) at his home, following a long battle with heart disease.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mankato with the Rev. Steve Kosberg officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to services, all at the church. Memorials preferred to Hosanna Lutheran Church or donor's choice. Mankato Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Brian K. Garvin was born Nov. 29, 1957, in Minneapolis to Lyle and Shirley (VanBuren) Garvin. He graduated from Mankato East High School in 1976 and later from Brown Institute in broadcasting. On August 16, 1987, he married Laurel Brinkman at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mankato.

Brian began his commercial radio career at KTOE in the late 70s and became program director of the area's first alternative radio station, KDOG, from its inception in 1985. Brian received national recognition for innovative radio programming and received awards from major record labels for his continual efforts for air play for new artists.

Brian was a member of Hosanna Lutheran Church, active with Bible Study Fellowship and Promise Keepers. He was a past board member of Broadcasting Conclave, owned KDOG sound and light show. He has served as captain during his 11-year involvement with the Mankato Police Reserves, was involved with the North Mankato Fun Days Parade and participated in various Mankato and North Mankato community projects.

He was a devoted YMCA baseball and basketball coaching staff member. He enjoyed building model cars, cooking, watching football and was a great conversationalist with friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Laurel, Mankato; two sons, Weston and Taylor, both at home in Mankato; mother, Shirley Garvin, Fort Collins, Colo.; three brothers, Chuck Garvin and wife, Trish, Mankato, Kent Garvin, of Fort Collins, Colo.; and Jon Garvin and wife, Jean, Eagan; sister, Roxanne Duehring and husband, Donald, Mankato; father- and mother-in-law, Garland and Karna Brinkman, Garner; sister-in-law, Valerie Kaplan and husband, Gordon, Fort Worth, Texas; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, three great nephews and many good friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and a sister.

** W. Francis Lesch

OSAGE — W. Francis Lesch, 78, of Osage, died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 1998) at the Ninth St. Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage.

W. Francis Lesch was born June 1, 1919, on the family farm south of Osage in East Cedar Township, Mitchell County.

Survivors include two sisters, Marvel Lesch and Irva Feldpouch, both of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.

** Asmund E. Norson

HAMPTON — Pastor Asmund E. Norson, 88, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 1998) at the Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hampton, with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Memorials may be sent to the family in his memory.

Asmund E. Norson was born May 6, 1909, in Macoun, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Norson, of Hampton; one daughter, Saundra Steadman, of Melbourne, Australia; two sons, Rolf Norsen, of Tynset, Norway, and Paul Norson, of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Jorunn Garthe, of Petosky, Mich., and Millie Norson, of Mondovi, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one grandchild.

MASON CITY — Glen J. Kahler, 93, of 1140 First St. S.W., died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. Friday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m.

ST. ANSGAR — Calvin R. Madden, 40, of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 1998) in an automobile accident in Mitchell County.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville, with the Rev. David Palm officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Toeterville.

Calvin R. Madden was born Oct. 27, 1957, in Waterloo.

** Robert J. 'Bob' Curley

ROCKWELL — Robert J. "Bob" Curley, age 68, of Rockwell, died Wednesday, (Jan. 21,
1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Rockwell. Interment will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home in Rockwell, where a parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Mr. Vic Groh.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Robert Curley Memorial Fund.

Bob was born on April 16, 1998, south of Rockwell, to Michael and Louella (Johnson) Curley. He attended school in Rockwell and then worked for the local railroad for a short time.

Robert was united in marriage to Beulah M. Curley on May 17, 1952, which was blessed by the
Catholic Church.

Over the next 42 years he worked as a dock foreman at AMPI in Mason City where he was also a member of the Teamsters Union. He retired from there in 1991. He also kept himself busy working part time driving truck for the Ruan Truck Company, working in the spring and fall for area farmers and bartending at the American Legion in Rockwell where he was a social member.

Bob was a volunteer numerous times at the Rockwell Fire Department's pancake dinners. Bob would pass his days feeding and watching the squirrels and birds, pampering his cars as well as watching game shows and beating the odds at Altoona and Jack Pot Junction. He loved country western music and had a "gift for gab," and thoroughly enjoyed socializing with people.

He was an excellent and caring father and husband and "never yelled at his girls or grandchildren." His joy in life was baby-sitting his grandson, Justin, and smiling from ear to ear when he talked to his granddaughter on the phone. He and Beulah traveled and enjoyed spending time on the West Coast with their children.

Bob, along with his loving wife, Beulah, is survived by his three daughters, Jacalyn Hartwigsen,
Ridgefield, Wash.; Julie and her husband, Ken Hanawalt, Rockwell, Michele and her husband, Jay Schleiger, Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Marcielle Freund and Mary Clausen, both of Mason City; one aunt, Kay Fike, La Puenta, Calif.; and his two favorite grandchildren, Justin Hanawalt, of Rockwell and Jordyn Schleiger, of Portland, Ore.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, two sisters, Patricia Lambert and Helen Curley; two
brothers, Martin and Joe Curley; and one nephew, Steve Clausen.

MASON CITY — Glen J. Kahler, 93, of 1140 First St. S.W., died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 1998) at
Good Shepherd Healthcare Center, Mason City.

Ave., Mason City, with the Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery,

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a 7 p.m. scriptural prayer service.

Glen J. Kahler was born Sept. 25, 1904, in Titonka, son of Herman and Anna (Welhausen) Kahler. He
married Rose Ann Berks on Jan. 24, 1928, in Bancroft.

Glen grew up near Lakota and attended rural schools. After his marriage, he moved to a farm near Buffalo Center until retiring in 1970 and moving to Mason City. Glen enjoyed golfing, bowling, woodworking and yardwork, and he loved spending time with his family.

Glen was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and a past member of Catholic Order of
Foresters.

Survivors include eight children, Dolores Kahler, Mason City; Eileen Hutchison and her husband, Harold, Mason City; Mary Hammond and her husband, Darrell, Topeka, Kan., Edward Kahler and his wife,
Phyllis, Buffalo Center; Gerald Kahler and his wife, Helga, Newport News, Va.; Diane Loterbour
and her husband, Robert, Pappilion, Neb.; Bernard Kahler and his wife, Nancy, Topeka, Kan.; and Francis Kahler and his wife, Julie, West Des Moines; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grand-children; one brother, Alva
Kahler and his wife, Dorothy, Bancroft; one sister-in-law, Laura Kahler, Bancroft; and many nieces and nephews.

** Hilmar A. 'Hil' Buerger

VENTURA — Hilmar A. "Hil" Buerger, 78, of 17 Clear View Dr., Ventura, died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, with the
Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.,
Clear Lake, and one hour before the service at the church.

Hilmar Arthur Buerger was born on May 26, 1919, in Addison, Ill., the son of Oscar and Wilhelmina Mecklenberg Buerger.

He married Ruth Wolfram on June 4, 1944 at St. John Lutheran Church, in Garner.

Hilmar attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Addison, Ill. He graduated from Concordia Prep School in River Forest, Ill., in 1937 and from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest in 1941. While at Concordia, he
served as president of the student body, played in the band and participated in athletics.

In 1949 he received a master's degree from the University of Maryland. He did additional graduate work at Western Illinois University and at Northwestern University of Missouri. In 1967, he was a recipient of a National Science Foundation Scholarship.

Hilmar taught at the following schools: St. John Lutheran School in Garner, Iowa; Trinity Lutheran Church in Faribault, Minn.; Immanuel Lutheran School in Baltimore, Md.; St. Mark Lutheran School in North Tonawanda, N.Y.

During the last 30 years of his professional career, he served as teacher and principal at St. James Lutheran School in Quincy, Ill. Altogether he served as an educator for 43 years.

During the years in Quincy, Hilmar served as president and later as treasurer of the Central Illinois Teachers Conference and held memberships on many other educational boards. He served as moderator for a weekly television show, "Chart and Compass," which aired on Station KHQA in Quincy.

After retirement in 1984, Hilmar tutored students at the Clear Lake Junior and Senior High Schools. He also was affiliated with the Literacy Program at North Iowa Community College.

In 1988 he was named "Volunteer Educator of the Year" by the Iowa Board of Education. The award was presented by Gov. Terry Branstad. In addition, he received the Friend of Education Award from the Clear Lake Education Association and was recipient of the 1991 Outstanding National School Volunteer by the Walt Disney World.

Other retirement activities included serving on the Ventura Library Committee during the time of the construction of the new building and as a member of the Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Buerger, of Ventura; one daughter, Dr. Jane Buerger, of Tuckahoe, N.Y.; one brother, the Rev. Dr. Martin Buerger and his wife, Peg, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three sisters, Elvira Buerger, of Conroe, Texas; Thekla Brendt and her husband, Clarence, of Pekin, Ill., and Beata Hinterberger, of Conroe, Texas; and his brother-in-law, the Rev. James Wolfram and his wife, Darlene, of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Hilmar was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Oscar; and four sisters, Althea, Irmgard, Doris and Annette.

Clyde H. Buckley was born in Boone County, near Frazer, Iowa, on Dec. 5, 1907, the son of Robert and Gelina (Ellsberry) Buckley.

He received his education in rural school near his home.

He was married to Viola Moen on May 31, 1936, at the Immanuel Lutheran Parsonage in Forest City. The couple farmed in Winnebago, Worth and Cerro Gordo counties before retiring in 1972.

Clyde farmed his entire life. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, doing yard work and gardening. He always shared his harvest with family and friends.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

He is survived by a daughter, Janet Jerde, of Clarion; a son and his wife, David and Martha Buckley, of Corsicana, Texas; a sister, Mable Newby, of Oregon; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola; a son, Gerrold; a son-in-law, James Jerde; and eight brothers and sisters.

CRYSTAL LAKE — Esther R. Foley, 84, of Crystal Lake, died Friday (Jan. 23, 1998) at the Wyndcrest Nursing Home, in Clinton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Crystal Lake,
with the Rev. Ken Suetterlin, officiating. There will be a private inurnment in Crystal Lake Cemetery.

Esther, the daughter of John and Ida Marie (Ludwig) Bonnstetter, was born Nov. 9, 1913 in Corwith, Iowa. She attended school in Corwith, graduating from Corwith High School.

She was married to Jean Edward Foley on Nov. 22, 1934, at Cambridge, Ill.

They farmed in the Corwith and Crystal Lake areas and owned and operated the Crystal Milling Company from 1953 to 1978. Jean passed away June 7, 1980.

She was a member of the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church and past worthy matron of Eastern Star.

She enjoyed her family, sewing, cooking, baking cookies, gardening, crafts and helping others.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Hjelmaas and her husband, Robert, of Clinton; one grandson, Reid Hjelmaas and his wife, Judy of Grayslake, Ill.; one granddaughter, Angela Griffith and her husband, Aaron, of Mt. Zion, Ill.; and four great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Kristen, Drake and Lauren; sisters-in-law, Rita Gillette, of Marshalltown, Lelia Bonnstetter, of Charleston, Ill., and Willadel Foley, of Cape Neddick, Mass., as well as nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband; a daughter, Janet Faye Foley; and four brothers.

CLEAR LAKE — Edward J. "Ed" Wood, 88, of P.O. Box 534, Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Jan. 22, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Ed was born on a farm north of Clear Lake, on Oct. 21, 1909, the son of Byron C. and Maude (McGuinnis) Wood. The family homesteaded in Vail, Ore. for a number of years and then returned to Clear Lake. They
moved to Hayward, Wis., where they owned a farm and the family grew up.

Ed met Hermina Steinmeyer in Hayward, Wis. They were married in Clear Lake, Iowa, on June 15, 1937 in the Methodist Chapel which is now where the post office is.

They farmed many years in the Clear Lake-Ventura area. In 1954, they moved to a farm north of Meservey, Iowa.

Ed enjoyed hunting and fishing, but unfortunately he didn't take much time to do either. Upon retirement, Ed and Hermina lived at 606 18th St. W., Clear Lake.

Ed is survived by his wife, Hermina Wood, Clear Lake; his children, Gary Wood and his wife, Bettie, Inez, Texas; Karen Tubesing and her husband, Charles, Kirtland, Ohio; Steve Wood and his wife, Sharon, Virginia Beach, Va.; Ken Wood and his wife Carol, Columbia, Md.; Byron Wood and his wife, Marlys, Clear Lake; Greg Wood and his wife, Sue, Carrolton, Texas; and Roger Wood, Grandview, Mo.; grandfather of 17; and
great-grandfather of 17; two brothers, Mike Wood, of Texas; and Wilbur Wood, of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and three sisters.

** Helen Biesenthal

WAMEGO, Kan. — Helen Biesenthal, 73, of Wamego, died Thursday (Jan. 22, 1998) at the Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, Topeka, Kan.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego, Kan., with the Rev. David Miller, officiating. Interment will be in the Wamego City Cemetery.

Mrs. Biesenthal will lie in state from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, at the Stewart Funeral Home, where family and friends will gather for a visitation from 3 until 6 p.m.

The Biesenthal family suggests memorials to either the Wamego United Methodist Church or a charity to be selected by the family later. Memorial contributions may be mailed to the Stewart Funeral Home, P. O. Box 48, Wamego, Kan. 66547.

She was born Nov. 28, 1924 on the family farm in the Wells Creek Community southeast of Wamego, the daughter of William F. and Anna A. Martens Niedfeldt.

On May 28, 1946, Helen was married to Lester A. Biesenthal at Wells Creek and they farmed in the Wells Creek area until they moved to a farm in the Wheaton, Kan. area. Mr. Biesenthal died Jan. 14, 1979 and Helen moved to Wamego where she made her home.

She worked in food preparation at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center, Wamego for eight years before retiring.

Mrs. Biesenthal attended the Wamego United Methodist Church and was a member of the Heritage Club at Wamego.

She is survived by four daughters, Joyce Berg, of Blaine, Kan.; Karen Krouse, of Mason City, Iowa; Leslie Blume, of Wheaton, Kan.; and Marla Cordel, of Beloit, Kan.; one brother, Marvin Niedfeldt, Belvue, Kan.; and two sisters, Esther Pageler, Wamego, and Mildred Laging, Alma Kan.; and eight grandchildren.

** Margaret Abbott

BOONE — Margaret Abbott, 91, of Boone, died Thursday (Jan. 22, 1998) at the Boone County Hospital, of respiratory failure.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Central Christian Church in Boone, with the Rev. Gretchen Barron, officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone.

Margaret Abbott was born in Kennet Village, County of Clackmannan in Scotland, on Feb. 8, 1906, the daughter of Alexander and Catherine (Bernard) Horne.

She came to the United States in 1909 and was raised in a coal camp near Granger with her family.

She married William Abbott, in Des Moines, on Aug. 31, 1926. After marriage, she lived in Boone the rest of her life.

In earlier years, she was head of the laundry department at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone. Later, she was employed in the athletic food service department at Iowa State University, retiring in 1973.

She is survived by three sons, Alex and Ed Abbott, both of Ames; and Don Abbott, of Mason City; two daughters, Catherine Pervier and Karen Ely, both of Boone; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Abbott, of Boone; 22 grand-children; 46 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, two sisters, and three great-grandsons.

Memorials may be given to Central Christian Church in Boone.

DOUGHERTY — Allan R. Bonjour, 16, of Dougherty, died Thursday (Jan. 22, 1998) in an automobile accident on Highway 65 north of Rockwell.

Allan was born on Feb. 24, 1981, in Mason City, the son of Peggy Campbell, of Dougherty, and Darrel Bonjour, of Mason City. He attended elementary school at Hoover School in Mason City. He loved Hoover School and especially Mr. Walrod.

Upon moving to Dougherty, he attended Meservey-Thornton Middle School and came to enjoy many new friends and a new way of life in a smaller school.

Allen attended SC/MT High School in Sheffield, where he completed his freshman and part of his sophomore year. Since childhood, Allan displayed a love for performing. He had a love for music and comedy. He played in the high school band, pep band, and marching band. He had dreams of becoming a band instructor. Allan recently played a role in the high school fall play. He enjoyed the humor of Tim Allen and Jeff Foxworthy and often used some of their material around family and friends.

Allan regularly attended services at the Church of Christ in Mason City.

He was employed part time at the Royal Fork Buffet in Mason City.

One of Allan's greatest joys was becoming an uncle just two weeks prior to his accident.

Allan will forever be in the hearts of those he leaves behind; his father, Darrel Bonjour, of Mason City; his mother, Peggy Campbell and stepfather, Dennis Campbell, of Dougherty; one brother, Brian Bonjour and his wife, Jennie, of Sheffield; maternal grandparents, Bob and Eileen Jewell, of Sheffield; paternal grandmother, DeElda Bonjour, of Hampton; stepsisters, Angie and April Campbell; and stepbrother, Andy Campbell. Allan was blessed with many aunts, uncles and cousins whom he loved dearly.

He will be greatly missed by classmates, friends and all who came to know him.

ROCKWELL — Robert J. "Bob" Curley, 68, of Rockwell, died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. Interment will
be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery.

Visitation was held after 2 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton Funeral Home in Rockwell where a parish wake service was held at 7:00 p.m. by the Rev. Mr. Vic Groh.

Bob was born on April 16, 1929 south of Rockwell to Michael and Louella (Johnson) Curley. He attended school in Rockwell and then worked for the local railroad for a short time.

Robert was united in marriage to Beulah M. Mullen on May 17, 1952, which was blessed by the Catholic Church. Over the next 42 years he worked as a dock foreman at AMPI in Mason City where he was also a member of the Teamsters Union. He retired from there in 1991. He also kept himself busy working part time
driving truck for the Ruan Truck Company, working in the spring and fall for area farmers and bartending at the American Legion in Rockwell where he was a social member.

Bob was a volunteer numerous times at the Rockwell Fire Department's pancake dinners. Bob would pass his days feeding and watching the squirrels and birds, pampering his cars as well as watching game shows and
beating the odds at Altoona and Jack Pot Junction. He loved country western music and had a "gift for gab," and thoroughly enjoyed socializing with people.

He was an excellent and caring father and husband and "never yelled at his girls or grandchildren." His joy in life was baby sitting his grandson Justin and smiling from ear to ear when he talked to his granddaughter on
the phone. He and Beulah traveled and enjoyed spending time on the West Coast with their children.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Beulah, his three daughters, Jacalyn Hartwigsen, of Ridgefield, Wash.; Julie and her husband, Ken Hanawalt, of Rockwell, and Michele and her husband, Jay Schleiger, of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Marcielle Freund and Mary Clausen, both of Mason City; one aunt, Kay Fike, La Puenta, Calif.; and his two favorite grandchildren, Justin Hanawalt, of Rockwell and Jordyn Schleiger, of Portland, Ore.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Patricia Lambert and Helen Curley; two brothers, Martin and Joe Curley; and one nephew, Steve Clausen.

Raymond was born on June 26, 1935 in Mason City, the son of John and Victoria (Gutierrez) Quinones. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1956. While in school he lettered in wrestling and was an excellent swimmer. After graduating he served honorably with the United States Navy as a missile man aboard a guided cruiser the USS Boston CAG1. He served during in the Lebanon Crisis. He was a longtime employee of the Milwaukee Railroad as a car man retiring in 1984 due to ill health. Ray is a life member of the V.F.W. and is a member of the Mexican/American Club. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Ray enjoyed fishing at the pits and watching sporting events.

Raymond is survived by his sons Raymond Jr., of Oregon; and Jonathan Quinones, of Mason City, one grandchild, five sisters, Juanita Quinones, Mason City, Beeda and her husband, Gene Lidholm, St. Paul, Minn.; Amelia and her husband, Gene Frenz, Redding, Calif.; Gloria Baker, Mesa, Ariz.; Mary and her husband, Wayne Schmitt, Sheffield, Iowa; three brothers, Leo and his wife, Carol Quinones, and John and his wife, Linda Quinones, all of Mason City, and Patrick and his wife, Mary Quinones, of Soladad, Calif., many nieces and nephews and friends.

GARNER — Don Auchampach, 73, died Friday (Jan. 23, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East in Mason City.

Donald Dean Auchampach, the son of George and Jennie (Johnson) Auchampach, was born March 26, 1924, in Garner. He attended school in Garner and graduated from Garner High School in 1942. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 in the South Pacific.

After the service, he returned to Garner and was employed by Northern Natural Gas Company. On Feb. 26, 1950, he married Nora Jean Hart at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. They made their home in Garner where they raised their children. Don continued to work at Northern Natural Gas Company and then retired after 33 years of employment. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He like watching sports, having participated in baseball, softball, golf and fishing over the years. In his retirement years much of his time was spent reading, listening to jazz music and spending time with the guys, visiting over a cup of coffee.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church where he had served as a trustee, and the Garner American Legion and V.F.W. posts.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Auchampach, of Garner; three children, Lori Garrard and her husband, Don, Pella, John Auchampach and his wife, Tina, Louisville, Ky., and Sheri VanOort and her husband, Rich, Garner; and four granddaughters, Elizabeth and Brianna Garrard and Mandy and Erin VanOort.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Cory Garrard, on March 18, 1983; his parents; and a brother, Orland W. Auchampach, Sept. 25, 1988.

Blanche was born Jan. 17, 1907, in Des Moines, the daughter of Robert Carl and Mary A. (Hendrick) Nelson. She graduated from Des Moines East High School and then attended Drake University for two years where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Blanche married Lester C. "Ted" Bailey June 17, 1934, in Des Moines, and that same year moved to Mason City. Blanche was a long-time switchboard operator, working for AT&T, Northwestern Bell, the Globe-Gazette, State Brand Creamery and St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital. She was a member of Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, volunteered for the Red Cross and Salvation Army and enjoyed ceramics, gardening, stamp collecting and being around friends.

Survivors include her son, Robert C. Bailey and wife, Myrtle, Bellevue, Neb.; two daughters, Margaret L. Bryant and husband, Seth A., Charles City, and Waneta M. (Long) Bagger and husband, Richard, Nora Springs; grandchildren, Julius Bryant, Charles City, Brian Long and wife, Darlene, Denver, Colo., Douglas Long and wife, Amie, Neligh, Neb., Mark Long and wife, Amy, Lincoln, Neb., and Matthew Long, Columbus, Neb.; great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Kyle Long, Odgen, Mikaela Long, Denver, Colo., Michael Long, Neligh, Neb., and Tymber Long, Lincoln, Neb.; sister, Mae L. ** Orpha B. Ostendorf

GARNER — Orpha B. Ostendorf, 95, formerly of Meservey, died Saturday (Jan. 24, 1998) at Concord Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey with the Rev. Jim Goechenouer officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Orpha Belle Ostendorf was born on the family farm north of Mesevery to Robert Smith and Annie Belle (Bowen) Smith on July 18, 1902. She received her education in rural schools and graduated from Meservey High School in 1922. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and for four years taught the rural school she had attended north of Meservey. On June 8, 1926, she married Harry J. Ostendorf and they began farming north of Meservey. In March 1928 they moved to a farm northwest of Meservey where they farmed until 1959. Here they raised their six children.

Orpha was active in the church, which she had joined at age 14. She taught Sunday school and Bible school and was a 4-H leader. In 1959, they retired to Meservey. Harry was a salesman and adjuster for Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Des Moines. He passed away in 1978.

Orpha stayed on in the home in Meservey until December 1990 when she moved to the Prairie View Apartments in Garner. She had been an active member of the Senior Citizens Club since it was organized in 1972 in Meservey, and served as treasurer until 1984.

She moved to Concord Care Center in Garner in October 1997.

She is survived by her two sons, Arnett Ostendorf and his wife, Jean, Klemme, and Gene and his wife, Frances, Rockford; three daughters, Harriet Stromer and her husband, Delwyn, West Des Moines, Darlen Bovenmyer and her husband, Keith, Garwin, and Dorothy DeVary and her husband, Virgil, Garner; one daughter-in-law, Joye Ostendorf, Meservey; 17 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her father, in 1960; her mother, in 1904; her husband, Harry, in 1978; her brother, Dale, in 1968; her son, Robert Ostendorf, in 1988; and two grandsons, Randall Stromer in 1970 and Todd Ostendorf at birth.

MASON CITY — Irene A. Wolter, 91, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 1998) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Robert Towner and the Rev. Jack M. Wolter, St. James Episcopal Church, Batavia, N.Y., officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Wolter was born on June 14, 1906, in Fertile, the daughter of Martin and Christina (Ericson) Ouverson. Irene graduated from Fertile High School, attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and later received additional training at Hamilton Business College.

She married Marvin E. Wolter on Sept. 12, 1930, in Northwood. Irene worked as a bookkeeper for Webster, Conover and Doyle Manufacturing. She was a long-time resident of Mason City and a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, PEO Chapter DZ, Novel Club and the Mason City Country Club where she was formerly secretary of the Iowa State Seniors Golf Association.

Survivors include one son, the Rev. Jack M. Wolter and his wife, Mary Elizabeth, Batavia, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, New York, N.Y., Mark, Los Gatos, Calif., David, Los Angeles, Calif., Martha, Ventura, Calif., and Timothy, New York, N.Y.; one great-granddaughter, Maria, Los Angeles; one sister, Edna Hill, Forest City; and three brothers, Leonard Ouverson, Clear Lake, Harold Ouverson, Fertile, and Donald Ouverson, Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, in 1975.
