** Walter A. Lines

MARBLE ROCK — Funeral services for Walter A. Lines, 83, of 2429 Glass Road, Marble Rock, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford, with Pastor John Albrecht, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Marble Rock and will continue one hour before services on Friday at the church.

Walter Arvid Lines was born Aug. 19, 1914, in rural Scott Township, Floyd County, a son of Henry "Harry" Charles and Clara Ann (Schafer) Lines and died Tuesday (Dec. 30, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, in Mason City.

He was baptized Nov. 15, 1914, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, in Greene and received his education in the rural Scott Township Schools and attended Rockford High School.

As a young man, he farmed with his parents and played baseball for the Rockford and Rudd town teams.

He was united in marriage to Cecile Geraldine Calease on Aug. 30, 1939, at Zion Lutheran Church, Rockford. They farmed in the rural Rockford and Marble Rock their entire marriage.

Walt's interests included hunting, target shooting, fishing and playing pool.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, member of the Farm Bureau and served on the Marble Rock School Board.

Living family members include his loving wife of 58 years, Cecile, of Marble Rock; three sons, Harley and his wife, Carol, of Marble Rock; Eugene and his wife, Cindy, of Charles City; and Jim of Marble Rock; seven grandchildren, Flint and his wife, Lisa Lines; Shane and his wife, Terri Lines; Todd and his wife, Suzy Duryee; Troy and his wife, Becky Duryee; Walter Duryee; Brad Lines; and Erin Lines; nine great-grandchilden; one sister, Lavina Morphew, of Marion; and one brother, Maurice Lines, of Marble Rock.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Walter A. Lines Memorial Fund in care of the family.

** Gladys Marie Ibeling

DUMONT — Gladys Marie Ibeling, 88, of Dumont, died Tuesday (Dec. 30, 1997) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. Francis Catholic Church, Dumont, with the Rev. Gerald Condon, officiating. Interment will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont, with a 6:30 p.m. Rosary service and a 7 p.m. Scripture service.

Gladys Marie Ibeling was born May 9, 1909, in Butler County.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph Ibeling, Dumont; and James Edwin Ibeling, Johnston; two daughters, Mary Ann Patton, Hampton, and Anna Mae Stiles, Waukee; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, and three brothers.

** Eunice Ricke

BANCROFT — Eunice Ricke, 85, of Bancroft, died Tuesday (Dec. 30, 1997) at the Heritage Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. John Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Thomas, officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery.

Vistiation will be held from 2:30 until 9 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft.

Eunice was born on Aug. 15, 1912, at Wesley.

Survivors include two sons, James Ricke and Donald Ricke, both of Bancroft; three daughters, Ruth Leonellie, of Bedford, Texas, Mary Olberding, of Omaha, Neb., and Ethel Nemmers, of Bancroft; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ben, Nate and Mark Studer, all of Wesley; sisters, Bernadette Cassel, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Zita Welter, of Montgomery City, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, infant son, one brother, and two sisters.

** Mary V. Smith

MASON CITY — Mary V. Smith, 79, of 321 Fourth St. N.E., died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland, of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

A private family visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, and continue one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral chapel.

** Harm Huisman

BUFFALO CENTER — Harm Huisman, 90, of Buffalo Center, died Tuesday (Dec. 30, 1997) at his home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Gerald Dyste, officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Harm Huisman, son of Tyle and Ettje (Kruger) Huisman, was born Nov. 13, 1907, in Holland, Iowa.

Harm attended school in Wellsburg and graduated from High School in 1926.

After graduation he went to work for the Rock Island Railroad in Wellsburg. He worked for the railroad for 50 years at different places around Iowa.

On Jan. 28, 1931, he married Rena Weichers at Eldora, Iowa. They later moved to Ely, Iowa. During this time, five children were born to Harm and Rena.

Harm loved gardening, hunting and fishing, and golfing.

He is survived by his wife, Rena, of Buffalo Center; three sons, Roland and his wife, Eileen Huisman, of Tahachapi, Calif.; Alan Huisman, of Omaha, Neb.; and Duane and Betty Huisman, of Waverly, Iowa; one daughter, LaVerda Huisman, of Clear Lake; a sister, Esther Van Deest, of Wellsburg; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a infant son; four brothers, Tyle, Brian, Theodore and Andrew; and one sister, Elizabeth Dimke.

** Grace Vivian Lursen

GENEVA — Grace Vivian Lursen, 70, of Geneva, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

** Jack R. Lyman

CHARLES CITY — Memorial services for Jack R. Lyman, 71, of Kingwood, Texas, a former long time resident of Charles City, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, Kingwood, Texas. Burial will be at a later date in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Jack Lyman died Monday (Dec. 29, 1997) following a long illness.

Jack Lyman was born Feb. 16, 1926, in Ottumwa Iowa.

He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1944 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy serving in World War II until honorably discharged in 1946.

Jack was a member of BPOE Elks Lodge #418 in Charles City and had a passion for golf as a member of the Charles City Country Club and Cedar Bend Golf.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Kingwood, Texas; two sons, Michael and his wife, Christi, of Mason City; and Timothy and his wife, Beth, of Kingwood, Texas; one brother, Gaylord and his wife, Beverly, of Delores, Colo.; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and one sister.

The family requests memorials be sent to the American Diabetes Association.

** Florence Bahnsen

ROCKWELL — Florence Bahnsen, 90, of 218 Third St. N., Rockwell, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 Elm St. East, Rockwell, with the Rev. Stephen Meyer, officiating. Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon until 2:30 p.m. on Friday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St. S., Rockwell.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Florence Bahnsen Memorial Fund.

Florence (Peters) Bahnsen was born Aug. 30, 1907, the daughter of Harry and Nettie (Scharer) Peters in Swaledale. She also attended school in Swaledale.

On Dec. 11, 1926, Florence was united in marriage to LeRoy Bahnsen in Mason City. The couple resided in the Rockwell Swaledale area all their lives. Florence was an operator and bookkeeper for the Rockwell Telephone Company for 30 years.

Spending time with her grandchildren was of great importance to her but she was always willing and ready to go shopping and ballroom dancing. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time at the lake in Jefferson, Minn. Florence also liked listening to music, playing cards, and baking bread.

Florence will be greatly missed by her daughter, Donna Campbell, of Ankeny; her son, Darrell and his wife, Elizabeth Bahnsen, of Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother, Lester Peters, of Mesa, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bahnsen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, LeRoy; one son, LeRoy; three brothers, Edwin, Elmer and Orville Peters; and one son-in-law, David Campbell.

** Lenna A. Wolfe

MASON CITY — Lenna A. Wolfe, 93, 1901 Zenith Ave., Spirit Lake, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Dec. 28, 1997) at the Hilltop Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Wayside Chapel, First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after noon on Friday at the church.

Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Lenna A. Wolfe Memorial Fund.

Lenna E. Wolfe was born July 17, 1904, the daughter of Charles Albert and Edna (Varner) Mariner in Ellisville, Ill.

Lenna moved to Mason City at an early age. She attended and graduated from Mason City High School as valedictorian of her class.

Lenna was married to Harold E. Wolfe on June 8, 1925 at the First United Methodist Church.

Lenna was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was active in their music programs. She also was a soloist at the Christian Science Church, and a soloist for funerals in the Mason City area and was active in the Matinee Musicale.

She was chairperson of WSCS, a member of the Women’s Police Auxiliary, DAR and a member of the PEO Chapter I.W.

Survivors include one son, Richard H. Wolfe and his wife, Nancy, Sioux City; one granddaughter, Susan Robinson and her husband, Norman, Patosi, Mo.; one grandson, Charles E. "Chic" Wolfe and his wife, Leah, Sioux City; four great-grandchildren, Josie and Taylor, Patosi, Mo., and Matt and Alexa, Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold in 1971; one brother, Willis Mariner; and one sister, Betty J. Fleming.

** Matthew A. Bechtel

SHEFFIELD — Matthew A. Bechtel, 86, of Sheffield, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Zion-St. John Lutheran Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Matthew A. Bechtel was born on Jan. 2, 1911, in Lansing, Iowa, to Mathew and Mary (Christoph) Bechtel.

He attended school in Lansing, Iowa, after which he worked and traveled extensively which included Napa Valley, near Fresno, Calif.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 11, 1942, and served with Company E 377th Infantry. He landed on Omaha Beach on June 7, 1944. He was wounded in battle Nov. 25, 1944, near Maselle, France. He was awarded The Purple Heart, The Bronze Star, The Liberty Medal from France and various other medals.

Matt was married to Esther Sintker at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, on Nov. 3, 1945.

After the war, Matt spent his career in the grocery business which included over 30 years at the B&W Food Store in Sheffield.

For many years, Matt was a Cub and Webelo Scout Leader for which he received the Merit Award.

He was a member of the American Legion and served as 3rd District Vice Commander and coached American Legion baseball for several years.

Matt taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for many years.

For 20 years, Matt was a member of the sideline chain gang for the Spartan Football Team. He was a life-long fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs. He was also a member of the Sheffield Lions Club for 43 years.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, which took him all over the U.S.

He is survived by his wife, Esther, of Sheffield; two daughters, Anne Bakke and her husband, Steve, of Forest City, and Janice Ferris and her husband, Jeff, of Chapin; two sons, Daniel of Hampton and Brian and his wife, Janet, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Aaron, Elizabeth, Chad, Laura, James, and Benjamin; two sisters, Marie Bieber, of Portland, Ore., and Adeline Kerndt, of Waukon, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and three sisters.

** Otto Swanson

RENWICK — Otto Swanson, 94, of Renwick, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 1998) at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

OSAGE — Mrs. Velva Smolik, 80, of Osage, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

SCARVILLE — Gladys V. Engebretson, 89, 14134 490th St., died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at her daughter's home in LaPorte, Ind.

** Mary V. Smith

Mary V. Smith was born Dec. 8, 1918, at Manly, the daughter of Edward C. And Laura (Cobean) Reindl. She attended and received her education at Manly schools, graduating from high school in the Class of 1936. She then attended Business College in Des Moines.

She was employed as the bookkeeper at Damon's Fashion Shop for several years.

Mary was united in marriage to Vernon Smith on Jan. 23, 1949, at Storm Lake. He died on May 29, 1963, fatally injured on a construction project in Sioux City.

Mary was a devoted and loving mother.

Survivors include three sons, David Smith and his wife, Sue, Naperville, Ill.; James Smith and his wife, Margaret, Mason City; Robert Smith and his wife, Julie, Fort Dodge; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Genevieve Sizenbach and her husband, Charles, Tomball, Texas; DeEtta Peterson and Loretta Christians, both of Mason City; a special friend, Rose Dawson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one daughter, Judy Kane, in January, 1995.

** Alice L. Fransen

MASON CITY — Alice L.
Fransen, 88, of 4962 Monongahela St., San Diego, Calif., formerly of Mason City, died Dec. 24 (1997) at the home of her daughter, Sandra Hartwell.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. Arne Bergland of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.

Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Alice L. Fransen was born Aug. 7, 1909, in Northwood, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Laura (Peterson) Nordahl.

Alice grew up in the Northwood and Lake Mills areas, where she attended country schools.

Alice married Lewis Fransen on Sept. 5, 1930, in Mason City.

Alice was a homemaker and loved to knit and crochet.

She loved her Mason City home and being an Iowan.

She was very loved and will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Arnold, Davenport, Sandra Hartwell, San Diego, and Priscilla Prestholt, Salem, Ore.; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one
sister, Lilly Fransen, Mason City; one sister-in-law, Clara Fransen, Mason City; and many close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lewis, in 1976; one son, Donald Fransen, in 1988; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

** Melvin M. Heitmann

CHARLES CITY — Melvin M. Heitmann, 74, of 1781 Lancer Ave., died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. His ashes will be scattered at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Monday.

Melvin Merle Heitmann was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Floyd County.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, of the Nora Springs Care Center; two sons, Bruce Heitmann of Floyd and Timothy Heitmann of Buford, Ga.; four daughters, Norah Heitmann of Nora Springs, Melanie Stumbaugh of Duarte, Calif., and Melissa Hernandez and Julie Young, both of Frederic, Wis.; one brother, Alvin Heitmann of Liberty, Mo.; one sister, Shirley Reis of Charles City; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John, in 1989; and one sister, Thelma Koehler.

** John E. Windolf

NASHUA — John E. Windolf, 62, of 61 Wabash Ave., Nashua, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Charles City, with the Rev. James Troxel and the Rev. Joy Bergfalk officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, and after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.

John Edward Windolf was born May 31, 1935, at Waterloo.

Survivors include his wife, Ann, of Nashua; one son, John Windolf, of Des Moines; one sister, Viola Meyer, of Tulsa, Okla.; and two grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one
daughter.

GENEVA — Grace Vivian Lursen, 70, of Geneva, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, rural Geneva, with the Rev. Jay Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Lindenwood Cemetery, rural Geneva.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Grace Vivian Lursen was born June 22, 1927, at Dumont.

Survivors include her husband, Fred "Bob" Lursen of Geneva; one daughter, Vivian Craig of Bowling Green, Ohio; one son, LeRoy Lursen, Dumont; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter and one sister.

CLEAR LAKE — Henry Brower, 82, of 1414 S. Second St., died Friday (Jan. 2, 1998) at 323 Seventh St. S.E., Mason City.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

KANAWHA — Viola L. Hall, 83, of Kanawha, died Friday (Jan. 2, 1998) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ewing-Dugger Funeral Chapel, Kanawha, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Lutheran Church, Vinje, with the Rev. Dani Jo Ninke-Grever officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Vinje.

Gladys Engebretson was born April 13, 1908, in Pierre, S.D.

Survivors include one son, Rodney Engebretson of LaCrosse, Wis.; two daughters, Lorraine Bunce of LaPorte, Ind., and Marcia Kyrsh of Elk Grove, Ill.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Brue of Lake Mills; and two sisters, Maxine Nelson of Northwood and Genevieve Folven of Albert Lea, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters.

** Hazel I. Fulcomer

CHARLES CITY — Hazel I. Fulcomer, 86, of Charles City, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at the Salsbury Baptist Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. James Troxel officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the family greeting friends from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be additional visitation from 9 a.m. until noon Monday at the funeral home and after 1 p.m. at the church.

Hazel Irene Fulcomer was born March 18, 1911, at Scandia, Kan.

Survivors include one sister, Wilda Wilson, of Antioch, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church or Hospice of North Iowa, both of Charles City.

THOMPSON — Vilo Haag, 83, of Johnston, formerly of Thompson, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 1998) at the Bishop Drumm Care Center, Johnston.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Tom Decarlo officiating. Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, with a 7 p.m. scripture service.

Vilo Mary Hanson Haag was born in Fenton on Aug. 20, 1914, the daughter of Otto and Rose Hanson. She received her education at Fenton School.

On Nov. 26, 1935, she was married to John J. Haag at Whittemore. The couple moved to Thompson, where they farmed for 42 years and raised their seven children.

In 1981, Vilo moved from the farm to Algona, where she lived for several years.

In 1991, she moved to Johnston.

Vilo loved flowers and had many colorful flower beds. She also had large gardens and had a talent for needle work and crafts.

Surviving family members include four sons, Duane of Morton, Ill., John of Clear Lake, Dyrald of Alpharetta, Ga., and James of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Cynthia (Mrs. Jeff) Henning of Johnston; two brothers, Laurence Hanson of Cresco and Merrildean Hanson of Hampton; two sisters, Marcile Hansen of Fenton and Lyllah Mae Norland of Mankato, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; one daughter, Debra; one son, Jerome; and one brother, Orville.

** Velva Smolik

OSAGE — Velva Smolik, 80, of Osage, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur Hill, officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.

Velva was born March 9, 1917, at Little Cedar, the daughter of Ray and Ferne (Neville) Wright.

She attended Little Cedar schools and graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1935, where she participated in basketball and softball. She later played basketball for the Little Cedar town team.

Velva enjoyed golf, bowling and bridge.

She married Ernest Smolik May 1, 1937, at the Little Brown Church. They made their home in the Osage and Orchard areas.

Velva enjoyed her grandchildren and her flower gardens. She was a member of Eastern Star for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest, of Osage; one son, Gary Smolik and his wife, Margaret, of Orchard; four grandchildren, Sister Katherine Smolik, OSB, of St. Louis, Mo., Frank Smolik and his wife, Becky, of Mason City, Mark Smolik, of El Paso, Texas, and Michael Smolik and his wife, Jennifer, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Verla Young and her husband, Ernest, of Des Moines, Wash., and Zella Meyer and husband, Mark, of Monrovia, Calif.; and two brothers, George Wright and his wife, Selma, of Glendale, Ariz., and Kenneth Wright of Tucson, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Cleone; and two brothers, Harold and Irwin "Ray."

** Robert ‘Bob’ Whitehurst

ALGONA — Robert "Bob" Whitehurst, 60, died Friday (Jan. 2, 1998) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Daniel Mangler officiating. Burial will be in the Concord Township Cemetery, Garner, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Robert "Bob" Ellsworth Whitehurst was born June 8, 1937, in rural Hancock County, north of Britt, to John and Marie Larsen Whitehurst. Bob began his education in rural schools near Britt, attended grade school in Ventura, and graduated in 1954, from Garner High School. He joined the United States Marine Corps, attained the rank of sergeant, and served from 1955-1959. Following his discharge, he returned to the Garner area in 1960. He worked for Butz Hatchery in Garner for four years, and was married to Sandra K. Sloter in Corwith on Nov. 23, 1963. Bob attended Hamilton Business College and graduated in 1965, in accounting. He began working for Allied Mills Inc. in Omaha until 1969. They were transferred to St. Joseph, Mo., where he worked in the feed division of Allied Mills. He continued his education through night school, and graduated from Missouri Western State College in 1974, again in accounting. In October of that year they were transferred to the pet food division in Peoria, Ill. In the fall of 1977, they transferred to Dalhart, Texas, to the cattle feeding division. In 1980, Bob became employed with Cactus Feeders of Dumas, Texas. In 1985, they moved back to Iowa, and on Jan. 2, 1986, Bob began working for Druggists Mutual Insurance Company in Algona. He became assistant secretary of accounting in the firm.

Bob was a member of First Lutheran Church of Algona where he participated in the Men’s Fellowship Breakfast and other church functions, was a former member of the Lions Club, and was active with the Girl Scout program. Bob enjoyed wild life, walking, flowers and working in his yard, fishing, bowling, playing cards, roller skating, dancing, reading books and the quiet times. He also enjoyed ‘acting’ in the community theater.

Bob died on Friday morning, Jan. 2, 1998, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center at the age of 60.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra, of Algona; one daughter, Lori Lynn Boyken and her husband, Dan, of Mason City; two granddaughters, McKenna and Madison Boyken; three brothers, Richard Whitehurst and his wife, Jeanette, of Garner, Reuben "Butch" Whitehurst and his wife, Terri, of Garner, and Rollin Whitehurst and his wife, Madonna, of Thief River Falls, Minn.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents.

FOREST CITY — Helen Lewis, 87, died Saturday (Jan. 3, 1998) at the Presbyterian Home, Roseville, Minn.

Henry "Hank" Brower was born March 24, 1915, near Crystal Lake, the son of Henry and Joan (Folkerts) Brower. Hank attended Crystal Lake schools. Hank worked at his father’s gas station doing mechanical work and also helped him build homes. Hank married Evelyn Peck on Aug. 5, 1936, in Sioux Falls, S.D. After they married, Hank worked for the government in South Dakota, Utah and Alaska. Hank then worked for Anderson Construction in Clear Lake for several years. He then was hired at Ruan Tranport Company as a mechanic. He retired as shop foreman in 1980, working for Ruan for 35 years. Hank and Evelyn enjoyed wintering in Mission, Texas since 1980. Hank enjoyed gardening, yardwork, his neighbors, and helping others with his special talents.

Viola, the daughter of Morris and Ossie Sandes Smith, was born Nov. 13, 1914, in Britt. She attended school in Britt and graduated from the Britt High School. She also attended Britt Junior College. She was united in marriage with Gilbert Hall in Mason City. The couple farmed many years in the Wesley area until moving to their farm south of Britt in 1954. The couple wintered for many years in Florida and Texas. They were members of the Wig-Wam and Wagon Campers Club. After their retirement they both drove motor homes for Winnebago. Viola enjoyed crocheting and embroidering. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, the Rebekahs and the Homemaker Club.

Those thankful for sharing her life are her two daughters, Jeanette and her husband, Vic Dreyer of Lone Rock, and Janice and her husband, Harold Philp of Keokuk; her two sons, Gene Hall of Omaha, and Jerry Hall of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Beverly J. "Suni" Mabie was born Feb. 4, 1928, at Davenport, the daughter of Herbert and Wilma Gollinghorst Braack. She married Maxwell Hauser Mabie on June 4, 1949, in Davenport. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1996.

Beverly was a graduate of I.S.T.C. and received her masters degree from Bemidji State College in guidance and counseling. She had been employed as a librarian and in media service for the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community Schools, retiring in 1989.

She was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and Girl Scout Counselor.

Survivors include three daughters, Teresa Faulkner of Onalaska, Wis., Caprisa Mabie of Hiawatha, and Toni Mabie of Waterloo; three granddaughters; one brother, David Braack of Farmers Branch, Texas; and one sister, Lois Peters of San Diego, Calif.

** Grace M. (Lomen) Gaffri

MASON CITY — Grace M. Gaffri, 105, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 1998) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, with the Rev. Paul Lionberger officiating. Burial will be in the Springfield Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah.

Grace Gaffri was born April 30, 1892, in rural Decorah. Her mother passed away when Grace was five months old. She and her two-year-old brother were cared for by her father.

Grace graduated from high school in 1915, and taught in a rural school for five years. She attended summer school at Upper Iowa Fayette College. Playing the piano was her most enjoyable recreation.

She was married in July 1919, and her husband passed away the following March, 1920, during the flu epidemic.

In 1923, she came to Mason City, attended Hamilton Business College and was a dictaphone operator at Standard Oil for three years. She moved on to the Park Hospital Clinic, serving in the same capacity to the doctors there for 37 years.

Grace never drove a car, and walking was her only mode of transportation. Perhaps this might help to explain her longevity.

Grace was always interested in local current news events and TV. Due to her failing vision, she was restricted to reading the black headlines in the newspaper.

Grace was very emphatic that KCMR Radio was her favorite, and spent many enjoyable hours listening. She knew the names of all the announcers.

In spite of the adversity in her life, Grace was quick to assert that her religious faith and sheer determination guided her through difficult times.

Survivors include two brothers, Erlin R. and Lorraine Lomen, and Oscar M. Lomen, all of Decorah; nephews, Edgar and Alice Lomen of Mason City, Richard and Doris Lomen of Waukon, Donald and Barbara Lomen of Decorah, David and Connie Lomen of Tucson, Ariz., Dale and Marilyn Lomen of Cape Coral, Fla.; nieces, Nancy Lomen of Decorah, and Dorothy and Steve Van Helten of Waverly; and 11 great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Eleanor Kertson; and one brother, Herbert Lomen.

** Virginia "Ginger" Tagesen

MASON CITY — Virginia "Ginger" Tagesen, 59, of 15836 300th St., died Saturday (Jan. 3, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Virginia "Ginger" Tagesen was born Nov. 29, 1938, in Mason City, the daughter of Martin E. and Hazelle (Mayo) Tagesen. Ginger attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1956. She attended the State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls for three years. Ginger returned to Mason City and worked at McLellan’s Dime Store, and then later moved to Albia to manage their store for two years. Ginger returned to Mason City where she was employed at Barclay’s Welding Supply, which is not Central States Airgas, for the last 27 years. Ginger enjoyed bowling, golfing, softball and all kinds of sports.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and Highland Park Golf Course.

Survivors include her mother, Hazelle Tagesen of Mason City; special friend, Norma Frazier of Mason City; two brothers, Lloyd Tagesen and his wife, Marilyn, of Hampton, and Ralph "Butch" Tagesen and his wife, Fran, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Marie True of St. Louis, Mo., and Mary Ann Chapin and her husband, Gary, of Joshua, Texas; four nephews; five nieces; one step-nephew; and one step-niece; five great-nephews; three great-nieces; and aunt and uncle, Gladys and Pete Adams of Mason City.

GREENE — Funeral services for Thelma Arlene Bronsema, 72, of 101 Diamond Hill Court, Hollister, Mo., formerly of Greene and New Hampton, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene with Pastor Lance Kittleson of St. Peter Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Thelma Arlene Heinmiller was born Jan. 16, 1925, near Nashua, Chickasaw County, a daughter of Julius J. and Nina (Cummings) Heinmiller, and died Saturday (Jan. 3, 1998) at Skaggs Community Health Center in Branson, Mo.

She received her education in the rural schools near Nashua and graduated from Greene High School in 1942. She taught in rural schools near Dumont where she met Frank Bronsema and they were married on Dec. 19, 1943, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

Following their marriage, they lived in Greene for a short time and then started farming with her parents. Two years later they started farming on their own near Plainfield and later near New Hampton until 1968, when they moved into New Hampton.

Thelma was church secretary for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in New Hampton and later was employed for Attorney Wiegman’s law office in New Hampton. She later became a certified nursing assistant at the New Hampton Hospital. In 1978, they moved to Eastman, Wis., where they spent their summers, and lived in California during the winter months. In 1989, they moved to Branson, Mo.

Her interests included flower gardening, bird watching, crocheting and knitting.

Living family members include her loving husband of 54 years, Frank, of Hollister, Mo.; her daughter, Sandra Larson of Forest City; two grandchildren, David Larson and DeEtta Larson; and three sisters, Leona Morey of Greene, Ethel Brown of Charles City and Pearl Cooper of Sumner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Alice Boerschel, Eva Clement, Dorothy Teeple and Ruth Cunningham; and one brother, Julius "Bud" Heinmiller.

MASON CITY — Esther Mae LaGue, 80, formerly of 836 S. Tyler Ave., died Sunday (Jan. 4, 1998) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

MASON CITY — Chester "Chet" R. DeSart, 89, of 36 Beaumont Drive, died Saturday (Jan. 3, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

** Agnes Hansen

COULTER — Agnes Hansen, 85, died Saturday (Jan. 3, 1997) at United Hospital, St. Paul, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Hampton, with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Agnes Hansen was born March 5, 1912, near Tyler, Minn.

Survivors include one son, Eldon Hansen of Anoka, Minn.; one daughter, Carole George of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; one brother, Elmer Duus of Springfield, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister.

** Lloyd B. "Lou" Fullerton

ROCKFORD — Lloyd B. "Lou" Fullerton, 70, died Sunday (Jan. 4, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services are tentatively planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Schumburg Funeral Home, Rockford. Other funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton Funeral Home, Mason City.

** Otto "Swede" Swanson

RENWICK — Otto "Swede" Swanson, 94, of the Kanawha Care Center, formerly of Renwick, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 1997) at Mercy Hospital Medical Center, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Herbert Schiller officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Otto "Swede" Swanson was born Jan. 27, 1903, in Lehigh.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and five brothers.
