OSAGE — Lorne Kenneth Quarn, 98, of Osage, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society in St. Ansgar.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with Pastor Sam Mack officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery.

Charles A. Perrin

Mason City — Charles A. Perrin, 76, of Mason City, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit following a massive stroke.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 3, at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 South Pierce Ave., with the Rev. Paul Collier officiating. Interment will be held in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Charles was born November 18, 1936, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Austin and Evelyn (Hartwig) Perrin. He grew up in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1955. He attended Austin Junior College. He then graduated from Mankato State College in 1960 with a double major in mathematics and industrial arts.

He taught at high schools in Lakota, Iowa, and Waterloo, Iowa, then earned a master of arts in education from the University of Northern Iowa.

He moved to Mason City in 1966, where he taught mathematics and pre-engineering at North Iowa Area Community College until his retirement in 1998.

Charles served in the Minnesota National Guard from 1953 to 1960, achieving the rank of sergeant.

Charles married Joan Van Denover of Austin, on September 20, 1958, at the First Methodist Church in Austin. To this union, two children, Scott and Michele were born.

He enjoyed antique cars, his model railroad collection and working with his hands. He was especially proud of his home, which he designed and built with the help of his wife. Charles enjoyed the time he spent with his wife and family and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Charles is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan Perrin of Mason City; son, Scott Perrin of Iowa City, Iowa; daughter, Michele Nelson of Newton, Iowa; two grandsons, Eric and Alex Nelson both of Newton; one brother, Duane (Rebecca) Perrin of Virginia; three sisters, Janice (Harlan) Johnson of Minnesota, Virginia (Tom) Laustalot of California and Linda Perrin (Donald Trujillo) of Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Evelyn Perrin of Albert Lea.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or the First Presbyterian Church.

Cecil P. Schultz
U.S. Army   WWII

Mason City — Cecil P. Schultz, 93, of Mason City died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, at Epiphany Parish-St. Joseph Catholic Church, 502 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. John Gossman and the Rev. Dan O’Hare concelebrating.

Cecil Pershing Schultz was born on Dec. 30, 1919, in Mason City. His early years were spent in Nashua where he enjoyed the company of his grandma, aunts, uncles and cousins, before moving to Mason City where he graduated from Mason City High School among the Class of 1939.

Following his graduation, Cecil entered the United States Army where he honorably and faithfully served his country during World War II. He was a Purple Heart recipient, having been injured while stationed in France. Cecil was honorably discharged from the United States Army in December of 1945.

On Oct. 16, 1948, Cecil was united in marriage to Doris Cornelius in Mason City. This union would be blessed with two children: Sheila and Thomas.

For more than 20 years Cecil worked as a brakeman on steam locomotives with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He loved the railroad and even in his retirement would enjoy sitting on his front porch and listening to the trains rail down the tracks.

In his free time Cecil could be found listening to country music, playing his guitar or practicing for his weekend gigs around Mason City with the Rhythm Boys Band. He loved spending Friday evenings attending the Knights of Columbus Fish Fry and Saturday evenings enjoying ribs at the V.F.W.

In his younger adult years he spent countless hours training dogs and competing in field trials. He loved hunting and fishing and being in the outdoors in general.

He was a lifetime member of the Mason City V.F.W. and a member of the Union Brotherhood of Railroad Employees.

Cecil will be remembered for his great sense of humor. His life was lived with unwavering grace and perseverance, which will serve as his legacy for years to come.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his children, Sheila Schultz, Stillwater, Minnesota, and Thomas (Laura) Schultz, Mason City; grandsons, Matthew Schultz, Chicago, and Mark (Chelsy) Schultz and their children, Ayla and Eli Schultz, of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Diana Cornelius, Betty (Bud) Smith, Mason City, June Ann Cornelius, Mason City, and Mary (David) Scholl, Rockwell; brother-in-law, Earl (Beverly) Cornelius, Mason City; special friend, Lila Paulsen; and several nieces and nephews.

Cecil is preceded in death by his wife, Doris; his mother, Lena Schultz-Cawley; sister-in-law, Pat (Gordon) Mennen; brothers-in-law, Richard Cornelius and Ed Cornelius; and special friend, Suzie Zubrod.

Thank you to the nurses and staff at Good Shepherd Health Center for the loving care provided to Cecil through the past month.

Lorne was born on Feb. 5, 1915, in Two Harbors, Minnesota, the son of John and Cena (Johnson) Quarn. He graduated from high school at Two Harbors.

Lorne married Ruberta Greenfield on July 31, 1943, at Mason City, Iowa. They lived in Cherokee before moving to Osage in 1946.

Lorne was employed by the state of Minnesota Forest Service and was a construction superintendent for the railroad. He was also a self-employed construction contractor and was a supervisor at White Farm in Charles City.

Lorne was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Osage Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed traveling, working with stained glass and woodworking.

Lorne is survived by his daughter, Pat (Dave) Ehresman of Arden Hills, Minnesota; grandchildren, Christopher (Julia) Bartlett of New York, N.Y.; Sara Wakefield of Irvine, California; great-granddaughter, Riley Lorne Wakefield; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruberta Quarn in 2009; his parents; three brothers: Carl Lower, Herbert Quarn and Robert Quarn; two sisters: Belle Nelson and Magdalene Undem.

Marcella Belle Blair

Manly — Marcella Belle Blair, 96, of Manly passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center in Manly.

Marcella was born June 14, 1916, in Manly, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Ethel (Cooper) Knowles. She graduated from Manly High School, and went to work for the Manly school system as a school cook.

In 1962, Marcella married James W. Blair in Monterey, Old Mexico. After their marriage they moved to Des Moines, Iowa, and she worked in the Des Moines school system as a cook. She devoted many years to both the Manly and Des Moines school systems.

After both Marcella and James retired, they moved back to Manly, Iowa, where they enjoyed playing bingo, playing 500 and dancing. Throughout the years they would travel around the U.S. where they would visit family and friends. Marcella was also very fond of sewing.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Cecil (Peggy) Calkins, Granger, Iowa; stepson, Leland (Kay) Blair, Falls Church, Virginia; grandchildren, Mark Calkins, Des Moines, Iowa, LeeAnne (Sam) Fox, Collierville, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Rachel Calkins, Sara Calkins, Carsyn Calkins, Ryan Ford, Dustin Ford and Kelsey Ford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ethel Knowles; sister, Luella Hanson; and brother-in-law, Martin Hanson.

Sioux City — Billie J. Olson, 67, of Sioux City, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2013, at a local Sioux City Hospital.

She married Ron Olson on October 31, 1994, in Las Vegas, Nevada He preceded her in death on November 9, 2009, in Sioux City.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting, cooking, Facebooking family and friends, the company of her cat, Sniffers, and her visits to Wal-Mart.

She is survived by her two sons, Robert (Linda) Carney of Sioux City and Jeff (Pam) Carney of Decorah, Iowa; two grandchildren, Alex and Skylar Carney of Decorah; and a sister Sandy (Bruce) Vetter of Strasburg, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

McIntire — Gerald Alan Cummings, 55, known to all as “Kenny”, of McIntire, Iowa, died on Sunday June 2, 2013, at his home.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in rural Elma, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating.

Wayne (Butch) H. VanDenBosch
U.S. Navy   WWII

LAKE MILLS — Wayne (Butch) H. VanDenBosch passed away on June 1, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness.

In accordance to his wishes, his body was cremated and there will be no formal memorial service.

Butch was born July 30, 1926, in Sheridan, Iowa, to Henry and Jeannette (Grooters) VanDenBosch of Boyden. He attended his formative school years in the family hometown of Boyden, Iowa, until moving to Fertile, Iowa, where he graduated from Fertile High School. At the age of 17, Butch enlisted in the United State Navy and served in World War II.

Upon his return from war, Butch married Jean Ouverson and to this union was born four sons. The family operated Fertile Valley Hatchery and Feed Mill in Fertile, Iowa, for many years. Butch later took a position with Winnebago Industries as a truck driver and eventually moved into a sales management position.

He later moved to Lake Mills, Iowa, and continued his career with Winnebago Industries. After retiring, Butch delivered motor homes throughout the country, including many trips to Alaska where he eventually established a second home.

Butch continued to live in his Lake Mills residence until his recent illness. He enjoyed his close friends, took pride in his children, grandchildren and his Dutch heritage. He was especially proud to be one of the World War II veterans that took an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2009.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Don “Skinny” VanDenBosch; daughter-in-law, Kelly VanDenBosch; grandson, BenjyVanDenBosch, and his ex-wife, Jean.

Survivors include his four sons, Bob (Toby) VanDenBosch of Mason City, Iowa; Tom VanDenBosch and Scott (Annette) VanDenBosch both of Pine, Arizona; Michael (Karen) VanDenBosch of Iowa City, Iowa; and stepson Bruce Troe of Sylmar, California; sister, Linda (John) Backhaus of Woodbury, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Norma Lou VanDenBosch of Story City, Iowa; grandchildren: Lindsay (Jeff) Horner of West Des Moines, Iowa; Sasha VanDenBosch of Chicago, Illinois; Noel, Leah and Lucas VanDenBosch of Iowa City, Iowa;Mark Valentine and Alicia,Vanessa and Hillary VanDenBosch all of Phoenix, Arizona; as well as a niece, nephews,and great-grandchildren.

Northwood — Lois Swensrud Johnson, formerly Lois Reid, passed away on March 22, 2013, at the age of 82, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Service for family and friends will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, with Pastor Barbara Wills officiating.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Dudley Johnson of Milwaukee, her son Jeffrey Swegler and his wife Terri of Dundee, Illinois, her daughter Nancy Anthony and her husband Bob of Wellesley, Massachusetts, and four grandchildren , Drew Anthony and his wife Amber of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Graham Anthony of Atlanta, Georgia, and Blake and Bianca Swegler of Dundee, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her brother Stephen B. Swensrud, her former husband Donald J. Reid, and her parents Sidney and Isabelle Swensrud, all former residents of Naples.

Lois is remembered for her curiosity and spark, her love of nature and natural settings and for her appreciation of people from all walks of life. She had a talent for painting, gardening and decorating. Lois was a longtime resident of Naples, Florida, where she enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She also spent time in Costa Rica with her late husband Don, where she became interested in the plight of Howler monkeys.

In 2009 Lois and her husband Dudley moved from Naples to Germantown, Wisconsin, although she spent her last two years in a lakefront condominium in Milwaukee.

Lois always enjoyed visiting Northwood from the time of her childhood through her last visit in 2011. She had deep affection for her aunts, uncles, and dear cousins. It was her wish to be laid to rest in Northwood.

Bonnie Hoeft

FOREST CITY — Bonnie Hoeft, 79, of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, formerly of Forest City, Iowa, died Sunday, May 26, 2013, at her son’s home in Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, following a long illness.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 6, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, with Pastor Justin Asche officiating.

Inurnment will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

Bonnie N. Hoeft was born on March 27, 1934, in Swea City, Iowa. She was one of eight children of Herman and Katie (Nelson) Weaver. She grew up on a farm north of Thompson and attended Scarville school, where she graduated in 1952.

In 1953 she moved to Forest City where she attended Waldorf College for the Nurse’s Aid Program. Bonnie acquired a position at the Forest City Hospital, where she worked for 22 years before retiring.

On Feb. 23, 1953, Bonnie was united in marriage to Dennis Hoeft of Forest City. To this union three sons were born.

Survivors include her three sons: Steven (Diane) Hoeft of Sturgeon Lake, Michael (Karen) Hoeft of Forest City and Kevin (Cheryl) Hoeft of Garner; one brother, Cecil (Paula) Weaver of Mason City; one sister, Lois (Leonard) Harms of Forest City; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis; her parents; two sisters: June and Shirley; three brothers: Herman (Bud), Dennis and Allen; grandson, Brandon Brock; and nephew, Vernon Weaver.

Delpha Arline Marsh

Clear Lake — Delpha Arline Marsh, 89, 20667 Grouse Ave, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, June 7, at the Christian Church, 302 Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Scott Wilson officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 until 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Christian Church in her name.

Arline was born August 2, 1923, in Wolf River, Kan., the daughter of John W. and Stella E. (Johnson) Hudson. She attended schools in Kansas, Oregon and graduated from Red Oak High School, Red Oak, Iowa. She moved to Mason City in 1954 where she worked for Carroll Sales in Mason City and later worked at the Ritter Nursing Home in Clear Lake.

She married Dale Marsh on Jan 30, 1966.

Arline loved cooking, baking and being on the farm. Dale and Arline traveled a lot and enjoyed their winters in Texas. Her mother told her she had movie star eyes. Arline’s church was her life. She loved her Lord and Savior and knew she would spend forever with Him when her life on earth was over.

Arline is survived by her husband Dale Marsh, Clear Lake, Iowa; three children Cheryl “Cherry” (Dick) Hayes, Clear Lake, Janice Kay (Dean) Scheffert, Indianola, Iowa, and John Dale (Caryll) Marsh, Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren; two sisters Jeanne Gourette, Salem, Oregon, and Joanne Albright, St. Petersburg, Florida, and several nieces and nephews.

Arline was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Pamela Jean Doss, son Douglas Charles Doss, grandson Steven Scheffert, sister Zelpha Downer, brother Ronald K. Tolles Jr.

Ventura — Richard Eugene Ax, 79, Ventura, Iowa, died Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1 until 4 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at the Ventura Public Library, 7 West Ventura Street, Ventura.

Richard Eugene Ax was born on July 5, 1933, in Klemme, Iowa, the son of Richard and Mildred (Hampel) Ax. Richard graduated in 1951, from Ventura High School, and also helped his father on the family farm. He was inducted into to the Army at Fort Des Moines, on November 20, 1952, and served his country honorably and faithfully during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge on October 14, 1954, at Fort Hamilton, New York.

After his discharge from the Army, Richard moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, and began his career as a police officer in Las Vegas, where he worked for 25 years until his retirement.

Richard loved to visit Peru for many years, where he met his wife and was united in marriage to Clara Marlene Jara in April 2009.

Richard returned to Ventura in 2010.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5515 in Garner.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Clara Marlene Jara of Ventura; two sisters, Eunice Kinsella of Garner, and Susan Van Wert of San Francisco, California; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister.

Mason City — Lura J. Cone, 78, of Mason City, Iowa, passed away peacefully at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Lura Janet Cone went to be home with her Lord on Sunday morning, June 2, 2013.

Lura was born July 18, 1934, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to Horace (Bill) Gardner and Opal (Smith) Williams. The family later moved to Indiana where she graduated from Warsaw High School. There she met Harold Cone and they were married on July 6, 1952.

Clare Mary Schafer was born on June 13, 1931, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Paul and LuVerne (Beehner) Schafer.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Sherwood Marsh, Mason City; children, Brian (Sara) Marsh, Brainerd, Minnesota, Sheryl Marsh, New Hope, Minnesota, David (Ann) Marsh, Chanhassen, Minnesota, and Robert Marsh, New Hope; grandchildren, Daniel Marsh, Chaska, Minnesota, and Laura Marsh, Minneapolis; brother, Don Schafer, Crystal, Minnesota; sister in law, Donna Gysler, Burnsville, Minnesota; and extended family members and many friends.

Seymour, IndIANA — Ernest M. “Ernie” Goranson, 82, of Seymour, Ind., passed away at Covered Bridge Health Campus, Seymour, on Saturday, June 1, 2013.

Ernie was born March 27, 1931 in Thompson, Iowa, the son of Evlon and Mary (Helin) Goranson.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Ernie married Rebecca “Becky” Barker on November 29, 1969 in Springfield, Tennessee. He was a local businessman who was employed at Magnavox for 14 years and operated a service station for Shell Oil. Ernie and Becky have owned and operated Cummings Lighthouse for 23 years.

He is survived by his wife, Becky of 43 years; children: Richard (Michelle) Goranson and Rex (Bobbie) Goranson all of Ft. Wayne and stepson, Keith (Dede) Gruber of Greenwood; grandchildren: Kelsey, Kendra and Nicholas Goranson, Jared, Sabrina and Zachariah Gruber; great grandchild, Collette Suzanne Goranson; a sister, Betty (Irving) Larson of Leland, Iowa, and numerous nieces and nephews.

His parents; stepdaughter, Sabrina Gruber; and a brother, Kenneth Goranson preceded him in death.

A celebration of his life will be held at 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 5, at Burkholder Funeral Chapel, Seymour.

Visitation will be on today from 4 p.m. until time of service.

BELMOND — Howard F. Jacobmeyer, age 93, previously of Belmond, passed away Friday May 31, 2013, at the Timbers Senior Living in Apple Valley, Minnesota.

Funeral services for Howard F. Jacobmeyer will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 7, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond. Pastor Cindy Morrison will officiate. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be provided by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Howard Frank, the son of Frank and Mabel Meacham Jacobmeyer was born August 24, 1919, in Frazee, Minnesota At an early age, Howard’s family moved to Belmond. Howard grew up, raised his family and retired in Belmond. For the last seven months, Howard has been residing in Minnesota near his daughters due to failing health.

Howard graduated from Belmond High School and served in the U.S. Army in North Africa. Upon returning to Belmond, be began working with his father building barns and doing other construction in the local area.

Howard was united in marriage to Alice Cline on June 7, 1947, in Lohrville, Iowa. They continued to reside in Belmond their entire married life. His true passion was his love of carpentry. Howard was truly a craftsman. He built over 80 new homes in Belmond and the local area, plus numerous remodeling projects. His perfectionism and work ethics were above and beyond. His work was his life, and Howard loved what he did, his legacy will live on in his work.

Howard was a wonderful care-taker of his wife, Alice for many years as she battled Alzheimer’s disease. He was extremely devoted and dedicated to her. Howard loved big band music — Lawrence Welk on Saturday night was a must. He also loved Pontiacs and going on road trips.

Howard is survived by his children, Barbara Johnson and husband, Gary of Rosemont, Minnesota, James Jacobmeyer of Cedar Rapids, Jane Mau and husband, William of Minnetonka, Minnesota, five grandchildren, Sara, Claire, Connor, Ellen, Julia, two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Brooks of San Diego, California, Elaine Cline of Belmond, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Alice, in 2002, and three sisters, Mildred, Gladys, and Joy.

Memorials will be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.
