Robert Deane "Bob" Wiley
MASON
CITY - Robert "Bob" Deane Wiley, 82, of
1502 Ninth Street S.W., Mason City, died
Monday, July 23, 2012, at Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Condolences may be shared with the
family at Fullertonfh.com.
Visitation is at Fullerton Funeral Home,
123 2nd Street S.E., Mason City, from
5-7 p.m. July 25. Following the
visitation, Bob will be cremated.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30
a.m. on Thursday, July 26, at First
United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia,
Mason City, with Pastor Sean McRoberts
officiating.
Robert was born on July 3, 1930, to
Everett Clare and Ruth (Todd) Wiley in
Indianola. His childhood was in rural
Warren County. Graduating in 1948 from
Indianola High School, he later
continued his education and was awarded
a Bachelor of Music Education Degree
from Simpson College in 1952 and a
Master of Education Degree from Indiana
University in 1958.
He was united in marriage on July 24,
1955, with Evelyn Blakely at the Harlan
(United) Methodist Church. This began a
life journey together of 57 years. Bob
and Evelyn were richly blessed with the
adoption in infancy of two children,
Steven (1961) and Carolyn (1963).
Bob began his teaching career in
Rockwell City, Iowa. He served in the
United States Army stationed at Fort Sam
Houston, Texas, from 1953 to 1955. He
continued teaching in Oelwein
(1959-1970) and in Mason City's John
Adams (1970-1987). In his career, he
experienced teaching of all grades. His
teaching methods encompassed a solid
music foundation, creativity and skills,
such as transposing of selections for
the changing voice. Motivation for
students included small group and
musical show performances.
A lifelong church member, Bob offered
musical talent as possible as a choir
member, accompanist and director of
children's choir.
Bob's talent in production gave Oelwein
outdoor theater: "South Pacific" in 1962
and "Annie Get Your Gun" in 1963. These
are part of that community's continuing
legacy in the arts.
Retirement from teaching allowed Bob a
second career in travel when he
delivered RVs throughout the continental
United States, including deliveries to
Alaska. He loved the open road, driving,
flights and adventure. Travel
destinations, including Hawaii, were
expanded by Carolyn's and Steve's living
there.
Courageous recoveries from cancers,
surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy
beginning in 1987 permitted Bob to
achieve his heart's goal on spending
almost 12 years with his grandchild and
namesake, Robert (Rob) James Wiley.
If you would wish, memorial
contributions in Bob's name will be
given by his family to Autism Cares.
Bob's life was filled with a quiet
faith, music, love and loyalty for
family, a desire for adventure and
excitement, Midwestern Depression-era
work ethic and honesty.
Adversities in health took their toll
and his last years have been spent at
home. His determination and stoicism
shone through in his desire for
independence that continued until he was
given rest in the mysteries of eternal
life. We thank Hospice for their care in
guiding us through this time.
Bob is survived his wife, Evelyn;
daughter, Carolyn Wiley of Mason City;
his son, Steven, grandson Rob Wiley, and
their friend Linda Olson of Mason City;
cousins Charlotte (Frank) Wilson,
Carlisle, Iowa; Marvin (Barb) Berry, Des
Moines; sister and brother-law,

Fort Collins, Colo.; nephews, Harold
(Verna) Reutter, Diane Reutter Bell, Don
(Connie) Reutter, Barbara Blakely,
William Paul (Denise) Blakely Jr. and
their families.

Martha Meyer
IOWA
FALLS -Martha Meyer, 96, of Iowa Falls
died on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the
Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m.
Saturday, July 28, at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls with
burial at the St. John's Lutheran
Cemetery in Garner.
Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m.
at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
Memorials may be directed to the
Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Martha Meyer was born June 20, 1916, to
Henry K. Anderson and Marie (Nelson)
Anderson in their home in Hanlontown.
She was baptized on July 16, 1916, at
Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown
where she was later confirmed in the
Lutheran faith. Martha's confirmation
verse was Matthew 5:16.
Martha attended a one- room school
before transferring to Hanlontown Public
for the remainder of her elementary and
high school years. She attended Waldorf
College in Forest City on a scholarship
and by washing dishes. Martha graduated
with an associate degree in 1935 and as
a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She taught
for a year in a one room school in Cerro
Gordo County, one year in a one-room
school in Danville Township in Worth
County and two years as the sixth-grade
homeroom, math, geography and PT teacher
in the Terril, Iowa, schools. Martha
completed summer work at Iowa State
Teacher's College.
Martha met the Rev. Clarence G. Meyer in
Walther League and they were married at
Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown on
June 18, 1939. They lived in Sanborn
until 1942 when they moved to Ulmer.
During WWII, Rev. Meyer served the Lake
View congregation. In 1946, the family
moved to Trinity Lutheran Church in
rural Van Meter where he served until
1958. That year, he was called to St.
John Lutheran in Reinbeck where he
served until his retirement in 1971. So
that Martha might care for her parents,
they moved to Clear Lake. In 2004, after
her husband's death, Martha moved to
Cedar Ridge in Iowa Falls where she was
closer to family. Her final earthly home
was Heritage Care Center.
Martha was an active member of Women's
Club, Ladies Aid, LWML, library reading
club, Walther League as a young adult
and Camp Okoboji. It was Martha's
husband who helped purchase and start
the Lutheran church camp where he served
as secretary.
What mattered most to Martha Meyer? Her
faith. This faith was lived out in her
daily life. Martha helped with VBS,
Sunday school, Christmas programs, the
mission work of the LWML, weddings and
Bible class. She rarely missed a day of
worship until her health prevented her
from attending.
The Great Commission of Jesus Christ -
to take the Gospel into all lands -
motivated Martha her entire earthly
life.
Martha's family mattered. She encouraged
her two sons and daughters - Roberta,
Don, Ruth and Ted - and many
grandchildren as they all pursued higher
education. She was their cheerleader,
proud of their accomplishments and as
involved in their lives as she could be.
Martha was fond of family gatherings and
celebrations. Phone calls kept her
connected to extended family and their
activities. She recorded the family news
in her own unique style for each
Christmas letter.
Martha was an avid reader. She stayed in
touch with what was happening in the
world. She greatly enjoyed every
opportunity to travel. As her children
moved around the country, Martha would
journey wherever she needed in order to
visit. Her special trip was to Norway in
May of 2004. There, she visited
relatives and saw family landmarks in
Bergen, Norway, from where her parents
and ancestors came.
Many lives were touched by Martha's.
But, more so they were influenced by the
faith which Martha confessed. It is
because of Jesus Christ that Martha
could sing, "I'm but a stranger here,
heaven is my home. Earth is a desert
drear, heaven is my home. Danger and
sorrow stand round me on every hand;
heaven is my fatherland, heaven is my
home."
Even in Martha's aging years, she could
sing, "Be still, my soul; the Lord is on
your side; bear patiently the cross of
grief or pain; leave to your God to
order and provide; in every change He
faithful will remain. Be still, my soul;
your best, your heavenly Friend, through
thorny ways leads to a grateful end."
Martha trusted that mercy for all of us
as sinful people can only come from
Jesus Christ and, for that reason,
encouraged all around her: "If you
cannot speak like angels, if you cannot
preach like Paul, you can tell the love
of Jesus, you can say He died for all.
If you cannot rouse the wicked with the
judgment's dread alarms, you can lead
the little children to the Savior's
waiting arms." (All hymns from Lutheran
Service Book, CPH.)
Martha leaves a legacy of faith to her
children, Roberta (Gary) Minish of
Plano, Texas; Don (Jeannie) Meyer of
Stanford, Calif.; Ruth Krueger of
Spring, Texas; and Ted (Jackie) Meyer of
Falcon Heights, Minn.
She leaves a legacy of faith to her
grandchildren: (Don's family) Jeff and
Mary Angela of Houston, Texas, and
daughters Clare and Mary Grace; John and
Jan Meyer and their children D'Mitri and
Roxanne of Dana Pointe, Calif., Ted of
Los Angeles, Calif.; and Andrew and
Edward Meyer of Stanford, Calif. (Ruth's
family) Andy and Jackie Krueger of
Houston, Texas and daughter Jessica;
Katie Krueger of Fort Calhoun, NE., and
son Drew; April Krueger of Cypress,
Texas, and sons Conner and Daniel Jr.;
and Sarah and Brad Untiedt of Austin,
Texas. (Ted'ss family) Julia and Justin
Stanley of Iowa City and children Callie
and Tyson; Ben Meyer of Falcon Heights,
Minn.
Martha's family remembers with
gratefulness her dear friend and
caretaker, Vicki Hoversten. Martha was
preceded in death by her husband, Rev.
Clarence G. Meyer; her parents, Henry K.
and Marie (Nelson) Anderson; two
brothers, Robert and Harry; and one
grandson, Dan.
To God be the glory for all that He has
done through His daughter in Christ,
Martha Meyer.

Marguerite was a member of St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Hampton and became
very involved in church activities. She
became a Eucharistic minister, lector,
first usher, a greeter and a religious
instructor for those who were interested
in becoming members of the church.
She also traveled to other churches in
the Dubuque Dioceses and talked about
sacrificial giving. For 25 years,
Marguerite was in charge of the Lenten
soup dinners at the church. She became a
board member of the retreat house in
Waterloo and was involved in hospice
work also for 25 years.
Marguerite loved to cook and to
entertain her many friends. Playing
bridge was one of her first loves and
she was still playing about a month
prior to her death. She always referred
to her bridge games as her "Life Line."
She was a very generous person with her
time and talent and traveling was a
great part of her life.
Marguerite is survived by many nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband, Nick, in 1981; sisters
Helen Jessup, Leone Draman and Veronica
Larson; and brothers Alphonsus Schuller,

Ronald Paul Butz
Clear
Lake - Ronald Paul Butz went home to be
with his Lord on July 27, 2012, at the
age of 59 at St. Marys Hospital in
Rochester, Minn. He died from
complications of congestive heart
failure.
A funeral service will be held for
Ronald at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, at
the Clear Lake Evangelical Free Church,
1310 Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, with
Pastor Dan Jordan officiating. Burial
will follow in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held today, Monday,
July 30, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake,
from 5 until 7 p.m., and will continue
one hour prior to the funeral service at
the church.
Should friends desire, memorials may be
left in Ronald's name to the Clear Lake
Evangelical Free Church.
He was born to Marlyn and Shirley Butz
on Aug. 27, 1952. He lived almost his
entire life in Clear Lake, Iowa, and
began life on the family farm north of
Clear Lake. After the passing of
Ronald's mother in 1968, Marlyn married
Eileen Howland Vierkant and Ron got a
new younger brother, Alan Vierkant.
Ron graduated from Clear Lake High
School in 1970 and after a year at the
University of Northern Iowa he attended
Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Ill.
There in 1973 he met Mary Ann Axt of
Bloomfield, N.J. After nine years, many
dates and two proposals, Ronald and Mary
Ann were married in 1981 in Marietta,
Ga.
Commenting on his persistence, Mary Ann
said, "Ron loved me until I loved him
back." Oh, did he love her, and made a
point to tell her so every day.
They started new married life working in
the family farming business in Clear
Lake along with Ron's father and
brother, David Butz, who lovingly
nicknamed Ron "George."
Ron and Mary Ann faithfully attended
Clear Lake Evangelical Free Church where
Ron served for 17 years as either the
sound man or treasurer, sometimes both.
After farming, Ron took on different
jobs related to agriculture and
accounting. Mary Ann puts it well that
"Ron was not in love with his jobs, but
he was in love with his family."
Ron and Mary Ann settled onto Main
Avenue in Clear Lake in 1995, raising
three daughters.
His greatest achievements - Karen, Susan
and Alison - think Daddy is the ideal
father; always patient, always kind, a
great listener and an even better
storyteller.
Ron leaves behind many: his beautiful
wife and companion of 31 years, Mary
Ann; his children Karen (Brian) Jordan
of Clear Lake, Iowa, and their two
children, Ezekiel and Baby J II (soon to
be born), Susan (Aaron) Hamilton of
Manson, Iowa, and their daughter Kyra,
Alison (John) LaFevers of Toccoa, Ga.,
and their son Bruin. Ron leaves his two
brothers Dave (Becky) Butz of Clear
Lake, Iowa, and Alan (Kari) Vierkant of
Allegan, Mich. Ron also leaves Eileen
Butz, the gatherer of the family far and
wide, a wonderful grandmother to his
daughters and grandchildren; many
nephews and nieces: John (Laurie) Butz
with Jacob and Jordyn, Sara (Shawn)
Puttmann with Kaitlyn and Ben Stroup and
Avery, Joel (Melissa) Butz with Grace,
and Kristen, Brad and Stephanie Vierkant.
Ron also leaves Mary Ann's family in
Georgia: her mother Edith, six
siblings-in-law, four nieces and one
nephew.
Ronald accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord
and Savior at a young age. He strove to
make his life and family a reflection of
Christ's love and faithfully prayed that
his wife, daughters, their husbands and
his grandchildren would love the Lord
with all their heart, soul, mind and
strength (Mark 12:30).
Ron is finally home in heaven where he
has longed to be for some time now. We
are all very jealous that he beat us
there.
