Carolyn
L.
Swingen
In
Memory
of
Carolyn
L.
Swingen,
1940 to
2010
I
decided
to write
my own
epitaph
about my
life.
This, I
wish to
share
with my
family
and
friends
who may
or may
not know
all of
my life.
I was
born the
youngest
child of
Melvin
and
Dorthy
Palmer
in
Waterloo,
IA, on
August
16,
1940. I
attended
school
at East
High in
Waterloo
and
later
obtained
my GED.
I then
furthered
my
education
at
Montana
State
University
in
Havre,
Montana.
For many
years I
worked
at
several
jobs as
we moved
from
place to
place
but my
favorite
was
being a
nurse's
aid. The
people I
was
helping
and
caring
for made
for a
lifetime
commitment
and
choice
for me.
This
work
extended
through
my life
and I
love
volunteering
for
S.H.I.P,
and in
the
surgical
waiting
room.
Many
times I
was at
the
hospital
five
days a
week
working
with
those in
need. I
loved my
work and
was
pretty
good at
it. When
I was 18
years
old I
met a
fine
young
man at
the
roller
skating
rink and
promptly
told my
grandmother
that I
was
going to
marry
him.
Four
months
later I
was
united
in
marriage
to
Donald
Swingen
on
November
8, 1958
in
Dunkerton,
Iowa. We
have
three
children,
Molly
who
married
Brian
Ekborg
(my
favorite
son-in-law)
and they
live in
Mason
City;
Dona
another
daughter
who
married
Mark
Anderson
(my
other
favorite
son-in-law)
and they
live in
Kalispell,
Montana,
my dear
daughter
Dorothy
Aleen
who
succumbed
to SIDS
as an
infant,
and my
only son
Christopher
Michael
Swingen
who
lives in
Mason
City.
From the
three
surviving
children
I was
given
the
precious
gift of
four
grandchildren,
Brandon,
Torr,
and
Jasmine
Anderson,
and
Andrea
Bartholomew,
and
three
Great
Grandchildren,
Tyler
and Alex
Bartholomew,
and
Amari
Ingram.
My older
sister
Rosemary
Lamb and
my
mother-in
law
Thelma
Ankeny
both
live in
Waterloo,
and
several
nieces
and
nephews
who live
scattered
all over
the
United
States.
Now for
some
interesting
facts
about
myself
and my
wonderful
husband
Donald,
who I
affectionately
call (Pa
Kettle).
In our
time
alone, I
enjoyed
spending
it with
him
along
the
Mississippi
River
where
lazy
days
were
spent
watching,
the
barges,
the
eagles
flying,
and
fishing.
These
became
some of
my most
cherished
memories.
When I
was
younger
I even
spent
time
hiking
in the
mountains
in
Montana.
I am
quite a
fan of
James
Patterson
and
other
authors
that
write
murder
mysteries,
I knit
and some
say I
have
quite a
sense of
humor
and
other
times
can be
the
Queen of
Sarcasm
when I
needed
to. But
the
secret
is that
I love
my
family,
my work
as a
volunteer,
and
being
with
people
that
respect
and care
for me,
and I
for
them. I
really
want to
thank
those
people
who have
made an
impact
on my
life.
There
are too
many to
list but
my
specials
are
Candy
Moore
for
helping
me
volunteer
for
SHIP,
the
entire
staff at
Heritage
Care
Center,
and last
but not
least
the
staff at
Willow
Pointe
Assisted
Living
who make
me feel
so
welcome
and made
their
place my
home
with my
husband.
We lived
several
places
in Iowa
from
Millerdale,
to
Waterloo
and then
to Mason
City in
2004,
But this
is my
home.
Carolyn
died
Monday
(Sept.
13,
2010) at
Heritage
Care
Center
at the
age of
70
years.
According
to her
wishes
no
services
are
planned
at this
time,
and no
gathering.
A small
service
will he
held at
a later
date
followed
by a
family
celebration.
Those
planning
an
expression
of
sympathy
may wish
to
consider
memorials
to the
Carolyn
Swingen

fund in
care of
Don her
husband.

Many of his family members received handmade gifts such as foot stools and other handcrafted items he had made for them. Irv was a perfectionist who believed in doing things to the best of his abilities. His family fondly remembers earlier years when Irv loved to ice skate and play hockey on the family ice rink that he would maintain in the backyard.
Irv enjoyed listening classic country performers such as Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, The Highwaymen and others. He was an avid coin collector and spent countless hours collecting and sorting coins to put in books for his kids and grandkids.
