Paul Aden Deverell

MASON CITY - Paul Aden Deverell, 56, of Mason City, passed away with his family by his side on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa following a stroke.

A visitation will be held from 5 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 23, at the Lutheran Zion Church in Rockford at 10:30 a.m.

Paul was born on Aug. 25,1954, in Rockford, to parents Ralph Deverell and Ruth (Ziebell) Deverell. Upon graduation from Rockford Senior High in 1972, he worked at White Farms Equipment in Charles City while owning the Devl's Den bar in Rockford. From his marriage to Michelle (Marzen) Deverell three children were born: Jessica, Jarod, and Joshua.

He worked at Schwan's Sales Enterprises for six years in Hiawatha, Kan., and St. Joseph, Mo. He then returned with his family to Iowa to work for Curries Manufacturing where he currently had over 22 years of service.

Paul enjoyed golf, bowling, softball, puzzles, woodworking and playing the card game Rummy with family. He was a dedicated Packers and Yankees fan, a passion which he shared with his sons. He enjoyed spending time outside at his house in the country and watching his children participate in their respective high school sports. He valued hard work and spent a lot of time helping farmers he knew. Those who knew and loved him will deeply miss his goofy sense of humor.

Left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life are his children: Jessica (Christopher) Ward of Ames, Jarod Deverell of Iowa City, and Joshua Deverell of Mason City; siblings Dave of Waynesboro, Pa., Cliff of Vermillion, S.D., Ann (Mike) Boltz of Circleville, Kan., and Alan of Salina, Kan.; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Deverell, and mother Ruth Deverell-Horkman.

It was Paul's wish that memorial contributions be made to Bremwood Lutheran Children's Home in Waverly, Iowa.

Wilma Duffy

IOWA FALLS - Wilma Duffy, 84, of Iowa Falls, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at Scenic Manor, Iowa Falls.

Memorial services for Wilma Duffy will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls. Private family burial will be at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, 619 Main Street, Iowa Falls, IA 50126.

Donald Wallace Ringsdorf

ALGONA - Donald Wallace Ringsdorf, 96, of Algona, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Bancroft with Pastor Jerry D. Miller officiating. Burial will be at East Lawn Cemetery in Algona. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church.

MOLINE, Ill. - Kirk D. Beek, of Moline, Ill., and formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at Genesis Medical Center West in Davenport, Iowa, after a lengthy illness. Arrangements are being handled by Wendt Funeral Home in Moline.

Carol D. Christenson

FOREST CITY - Carol D. Christenson, 89, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Thompson. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and will continue an hour prior to service at the church.

Carol Deloris (Johnson) Christenson, the daughter of Carlton and Adina (Hefte) Johnson, was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Belmond Township, Wright County, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Belmond, on March 13, 1921, and was confirmed at Kanawha Lutheran Church, Kanawha, on Aug. 27, 1935. She attended Belmond Township No. 2 School through the eighth grade and worked for the Tyrell family in Belmond. Carol was 16 when she went on her first date with a young man named Earl Christenson. They were introduced by Earl's brother, Lloyd. Carol and Earl dated for three years and then were engaged for 1 year.

On Sept. 14, 1941, she was united in marriage to Earl Albert Christenson at the Congregational Church in Belmond. Earl started farming in 1942 in the Kanawha and Clarion areas. In 1952 they moved to a farm near Bricelyn, Minn., where they farmed until he retired in 1983. Carol enjoyed raising chickens which she butchered and sold, and had a huge strawberry bed along with all the flower beds. Carol helped with the farming and during the summer she also worked in the sweet corn factory in Bricelyn.
In 1993, they moved to Forest City to enjoy their retirement years. Earl and Carol celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Sept. 14, 2001. Carol enjoyed spending time with her family, golfing, playing cards, bowling and dancing, whether it be square dancing or polkas and waltzes. She crocheted afghans for all of her children and grandchildren, and also embroidered a set of dish towels for each of them.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Thompson, where she was a member of the Altar Guild and WELCA, and her circle. In 1995 she transferred her membership to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, where she was active in circle. She was also an active member of the Kum Along Club in Forest City. Carol entered the Lake Mills Care Center on May 1, 2009.

Survivors include a son, Larry (Mary) Christenson of Phoenix, Ariz., and their family, Diana (Jim) Kostas, Alex, Christopher and James of Glen Ridge, N.J., and Paul (Jessica) Christenson of Phoenix, Ariz.; son Keith Christenson and his family, Kim Christenson and Bob Martin, Ty, Brock, Caleb and Austin of Klemme, Kelly Christenson, Carrie Morin and their son Donivan of Mason City, and Kurt Christenson of Fort Riley, Kan.; daughter, Kathy (Dan) Swearingen of Thompson, and their family Tammy (Mark) Solberg of Conway, Ark., Kristin (Matt) DeMott of Centerton, Ark., Laura and son Aiden, Brandon, Blake and Megan Solberg of Conway, Ark., Kevin Swearingen of Thompson, and Troy (Shannon) Swearingen, Paige, Braden and Jessa of Forest City; daughter Pat (Gordon) Sevley of Thompson, and their family Michelle (Kallin) Kurtz, Riley and Gretchen of Lakeville, Minn., Scott (Arin) Anderson of Thompson, Michelle (John) Blong, Tyler, Jacob and Kayla of Brainerd, Minn., and Renee (Lamont) Andrews, Megan and Joshua of St. Ansgar; daughter Eloise (Lyle) Wirtjes of Thompson, and their family Ryan (Jennifer) Wirtjes, Kasey, Krisanne and baby due in May of Denver, Iowa, Allison (Chad) Hinders, Taylen, Elise, Kinzee, Mylie and baby due in February of Buffalo Center, Emily of Cedar Falls, and Cody (Alicia) Wirtjes of Thompson, IA; daughter Deborah (Harlan) Nyhus of Forest City, and their family Sara (Jeff) Penning and Abigail of Clear Lake, Holden and Heidi of Ames.

Carol is survived by her sister, Wilma Friesleben of Belmond, and brothers Dudley (Janice) Johnson of Kanawha, Arland (Avis) Johnson of Hector, Minn., and Gary (Barb) Johnson of St. John's Newfoundland, Canada, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by all the special care givers at the Lake Mills Care Center and by the care team from Hospice of North Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, on May 14, 2002, three sisters, three brothers (two in infancy), son-in-law Gary Anderson and great-grandson Zackery.

Kenneth Eldon Libersky

SAND LAKE, Minn. -Kenneth Eldon Libersky, 83, Sand Lake, Minn., and formerly of St. Ansgar, Iowa, died Thursday Dec. 16, 2010, following a massive heart attack.

Kenneth was born on Aug. 17, 1927, at Osage, Iowa, the son of Frank and Georgia Libersky.

Kenneth and Annette Schwandt were married on June 5, 1948, and shared 63 years of a wonderful life together.

Kenneth, known as "Kenny" to his many friends, worked for St. Ansgar Implement from 1944 to 1971 when he built his own welding business, St. Ansgar Welding. In 1978 he built Grafton Welding. During this time, Ken and Annette purchased their "little piece of heaven," two acres on Sand Lake in northern Minnesota. They designed and built their retirement home, moving there in 1991. Kenny was an active community member, township supervisor and a pillar of the Northwoods Chapel.

Ken's life passions were traveling with his wife and daughters, fishing, hunting, woodworking, rebuilding old tractors, church and spending time with his many friends. One of his greatest pleasures was teaching his grandchildren, and later his great-grandchildren, how to fish.

Ken is survived by his wife, Annette, and three daughters, Gloria Heath, Jane Picht and Ann Libersky. He is also survived by his brother, Harland; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Because of Ken's excellent medical care and respect for Mayo Clinic, his body was donated to Mayo Foundation for advancement of medical education. His family is planning a Celebration of Life service for next summer.

Bradley Max Loomer

IOWA CITY - Bradley Max Loomer, 79, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at Crestridge Care Center in Maquoketa.

The Loomer family welcomes friends to a memorial reception from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at the Kirkwood Room, 521 Kirkwood Ave., next to Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at UIHC or the University of Iowa Foundation for Iowa Athletics.

Brad was born Nov. 21, 1931, in Mason City, the son of Max and Zelda (Chapman) Loomer. He was a 1949 graduate of Mason City High School and a graduate of the University of Iowa, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1953, his master's degree in 1956 and his Ph.D. in elementary education in 1962. Brad served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1953-55. In June 14, 1953, Brad married Margaret Doescher in Clear Lake.

Brad taught and was principal at numerous schools from 1954-1964, including schools in Owatonna and Rochester, Minn. He was also associate professor and assistant head of the Department of Education at Illinois State University. From 1961-1972 he was the elementary principal at University High School in Iowa City. From 1961 on Brad was a professor in the College of Education at the University of Iowa.

He published nine books and developed an elementary spelling series. In 2005 he became Professor Emeritus and continued work on educational related research.
Brad had served on the University of Iowa Board in Control of Athletics and was a member of numerous professional organizations.

Brad loved to travel and had visited most of the continental United States. He enjoyed time spent camping, backpacking, hiking in the Tetons and cross country skiing. Hawkeye football and basketball brought much enjoyment. Brad had a passion for running, and in 1978 while running on the University of Iowa track he was struck by lightning.

Brad is survived by his former spouse, Margaret "Margie" Loomer, and their five children, Kirk (Julie) Loomer of Coralville, Scott (Susan) Loomer of Portland, Ore., Jay of Iowa City, Lynne (Doug) Ginsberg of Iowa City and Anne (Steve) Richardson of San Antonio, Texas; his brother Dennis (Esther) Loomer of Austin, Texas; and his sister, JoAnn (Burt) Falk of Palm Springs, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Kris (Amber) Loomer, Justin (Leah) Loomer, Logan Loomer, Jordan Loomer, Landon Loomer, Louis Ginsberg and Megan Ginsberg; and two great-granddaughters, Addyson and Avery.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Loomer.

Kirk D. Beek

MOLINE, Ill. - Kirk D. Beek, 47, of Moline, Ill., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at Genesis Medical Center West in Davenport, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.

A visitation will be held at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23. There will be no services in Moline.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Dec. 27, at 11:30 a.m. at Elmwood-Saint Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa. The officiating clergy will be the Rev. Keith Scott. Immediately following the service there will be a time of fellowship with the family at the Wesley Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, at noon.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Rivermont Collegiate Prep School, 1821 Sunset Drive, Bettendorf, IA 52722. Kirk D. Beek was born in Mason City on Feb. 16, 1963, to Craig and Nancy (Ward) Beek. He attended schools in West Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated in 1981 from Moline High School. He was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 2002 because of a disabling illness.

Survivors include his parents, Craig and Nancy Beek of Moline; a son, Cameron Beek of Moline; a brother and sister-in-law: Gregory and Charlie Beek, and a niece, Taylor Beek, all of Franklin, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Robert D. "Bob" Olsen

MASON CITY - Robert D. "Bob" Olsen, 86, of Mason City died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at Heritage Care and Rehabilitation Center after spending 7 days at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 24, at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating.

Visitation will be held at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., on Thursday, Dec. 23, from 5-7 p.m. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Robert D. Olsen Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Bob was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Mankato, Minn., the son of Ray and Clara (Erickson) Olsen. He moved to Mason City in the 1940s when he was in his 20s. Bob married Donna Jaspers in 1951 at First United Methodist Church in Mason City. He enjoyed snowmobiling in his younger years and later enjoyed golf. He was a talented carpenter for many years in Mason City.

He was a member of the Elks and First United Methodist Church.
Bob enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and will be missed dearly by all who loved and knew him.

Bob is survived by his wife, Donna, of 59 years; two daughters, Janice Shevik and husband Gary of Rochester, Minn., and Nancy Ilbuga of Rochester, Minn.; grandchildren, Melissa Sahlstrom and husband Matt, Laurie Arnold and husband Brian, Brett Shevik, Jennifer Hemmer and husband Brice, Errol Ilbuga, Erin Ilbuga, Bianca Ilbuga, Beau Ilbuga and Isabel Ilbuga; great-grandchildren Bennett and Emma Sahlstrom; and one sister, Donna Mostrom.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Cindy M. Retterath

GRAFTON - Cindy M. Retterath, 59, of Grafton died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at her home.

Cindy Marie Venechuk was born on Oct. 4, 1951, in Mason City to Jack and Clarice (Bowers) Venechuk. She completed grade school through the Grafton school district and attended St. Ansgar High School in the years to follow.

On Oct. 11, 1969, Cindy was united in marriage to Gene Retterath at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton; to this union four children were born.

In her adult years Cindy held many hobbies. She enjoyed tending to her flower garden, something she was very proud of, as well as scrapbooking, cooking, needlework and traveling with Gene in their R.V. Cindy also liked watching NASCAR and was a Minnesota Vikings football fan. In addition to her hobbies, Cindy volunteered at the Grafton Public Library.

Cindy adored her children and grandchildren and would spend as much time with them as she could. Family would always be the most important thing to her.

Those grateful in sharing in her life are her husband of 41 years, Gene Retterath; parents, Jack and Clarice Venechuk; children, Bill (Keri) Retterath, Mason City, Buck (Jolene) Retterath, Mason City, and Ben (Jennifer) Retterath, Sioux Falls, S.D.; grandchildren, Carter, Megan and Zoey Retterath, Jenna, Rayna and Lilly Retterath, and Anna Retterath; brother, Sam Venechuk, Northwood; good friend, Bob Donahue; pet dogs, Puppy and Harley; as well as many brother and sister-in-laws, cousins, and other relatives and many friends.

She is preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, Jennifer Jo.

LATIMER - Kenneth M. Armfield, 97, of Latimer, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at the Franklin General Nursing Facility in Hampton

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Sunday Dec. 26, 2010, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, 204 E. South St. in Latimer. Pastor David F. Bernhardt will officiate. Burial will take place in the Marion Center Cemetery near Latimer. Graveside military rites will be provided by the American Legion Hanson-Have Post No. 658 of Latimer.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made in Kenneth Armfield's name to the family.

Dugger Funeral Home, 320 East St. in Latimer is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Martin, the son of George and Mary "Polly" Sheppard Armfield was born on April 28, 1913, in Aredale. He grew up in the Aredale area where he attended school.

Kenneth was drafted in 1942. He served in the U.S. Infantry during World War II. Ken fought for three years on the front lines, until his 32nd birthday on April 28, 1945.

Upon returning home at the end of the war, he married and farmed north of Latimer until his retirement. Kenneth will long be remembered for his faithfulness to family, friends, God and his country.

Kenneth was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer for 65 years. He was a 59-year member of the American Legion Hanson-Have Post No. 658 in Latimer. Kenneth was a great card player and an avid Cubs fan.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughters, Sharon Armfield-Penn and husband, Rich of Waterloo; Diane Meyer of Blue Springs, Mo.; Audrey McDonald and husband, Greg of Iowa City; Joy Winters of St. Joseph, Mo.; Janet Kramer and husband, Larry of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Andra Meyer of St. Louis, Mo.; Austin Meyer of Maryville, Mo.; Adam McDonald of San Francisco, Calif.; Brady McDonald of Iowa City; Todd Winters and Stacy of Olathe, Kan.; Matt Winters of Kansas City, Mo.; Kristen Katzmann and Dave of Rochester, Minn.; Tammy Kramer of Iowa City; Braden Kramer and Meilin of Denver, Colo.; and four great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ella; three brothers, Raymond, Russell and Donald.
