MASON CITY -Gladys Marie Andersen, 85, of Mason City, died Saturday (Feb. 14, 2009) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A funeral service for Gladys will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. Linda Johnson Prestholt, officiating. LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Kevin John Carney, 46, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Saturday (Feb. 14, 2009) at his home in Las Vegas, Nev.

He is survived by his wife, Fatima Carney; and three-year-old son, Kevin; his parents, Richard and Joan (Jenson) Carney; his sister, Laura Carney and her husband Barry Cullison, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; his mother-in-law, Nereyda Lopez; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Maria Magdalena Lopez, Carolos Lopez Jr., Olmedo Lopez, Josefa Mudarra Lopez, Rigoberto Lopez, Selma Ortega Lopez, Hector Lopez, Guadalupe Graviet, Jose Luis Lopez, Cesar Lopez, Lourde Chavez, Francisco Lopez and Ana Maria and her husband, Ted Cooper; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his infant twin sons, Richard and Carlos; his infant brother, Patrick James; his grandparents, John and Veronica (Harty) Carney; Elmer and Irma (Scheffelbine) Jenson; his father-in-law, Carlos Lopez and brother-in-law, Bolivav J. Lopez.

Kevin was a devoted father and loving husband. He loved cars, music, food and travel. He learned fluent Spanish at the ripe old age of age 34 in order to court his devoted wife of 11 years, Fatima.

He was passionate about politics and because of his personal battles with long term health problems; he saw the need for health- care reform on a first-hand basis and became an advocate.

Known for his quirky sense of humor and his ability to fix just about anything, he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Kevin was born in Mason City, on June 20, 1962, and was a 1980 graduate of Newman High School and attended Hawkeye and Dunwoody technical schools. Kevin worked as a restaurant manager for years as well as managed a GE appliance warehouse in Charlotte, N.C., but his favorite job was being a dad.

Services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at the Palm Mortuaries, 1325 N. Main St., Las Vegas, NV 89101.

Kevin's family has requested that those wishing to give a memorial may do so to the Kevin Carney Memorial Fund in care of Fatima Carney, 1141 S. 16th St., Las Vegas, NV 89104.

OSAGE - Roger William Gratias, 53, of Fort Collins, Colo., and formerly of Osage, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 2009) of dementia.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at the Eden Presbyterian Church, 3105 Glass Ave., Rudd, with the Rev. John Bates officiating. Inurnment will be at the Eden Presbyterian Cemetery.

MASON CITY - Phyllis L. Kantaris, 73, of Mason City, died Saturday (Feb. 14, 2009) at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

She was born on June 1, 1935, in Mason City, to George J. and Ann Margaret Olson Kantaris. Phyllis retired from ConAgra Food in Mason City. She loved to cook and dance. She enjoyed talking on the phone to her family and all her friends.

Survivors include her son, John (Lue) Muth, of Fort Madison; and her daughter, Karen (Terry) Hope, of Fort Madison; her brother, Jim (Gail) Kantaris, of Mason City; she was "Grams" to her grandchildren, Todd (Jennifer) Noll, Cody Nabors, Dena (DeAngelo) Seay, Nico Muth and Cory Muth; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor Noll, Karlee Nabors, Cameron Nabors, Joshua Noll, DeLanee Seay and Carter Nabors. "Aunt Tootie" is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Donald James Muth; and her sister, Darlene Holmes.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Mason City. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. untiltime of services at the church.

A memorial has been established in memory of Phyllis.

CHARLES CITY -Phyllis Melcher, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 2009) at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Phyllis Melcher will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main Ave., Charles City, with Pastor Robert Holdorf, of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the West Saint Charles Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. Visitation will continue Thursday an hour prior to the service.

Phyllis Eileen Anderson Dunkin Melcher was born on Dec. 5, 1922, at Rush City, Minn., the daughter of Harry and Aleda (Lund) Anderson. The family moved to Minneapolis, Minn., while she was an infant. She grew up in Minneapolis, where she graduated from South High School. Phyllis attended and was confirmed at the Elim Covenant Church. Following high school graduation, she worked in Saint Paul for the Montgomery Ward Company in the billing department.

On May 10, 1942, she was united in marriage to Harold W. Dunkin. Harold was killed on Dec. 19, 1944, during World War II and is buried in Saint Avold, France. Their daughter Judy was born to this union.

It was on Aug. 14, 1947, that Phyllis was married to Oscar Melcher at her parents' home in Minneapolis. To this marriage two sons, Lloyd and Gayle, and a daughter, Darcy were born. Oscar and Phyllis began their married life on the Melcher family farm, which has been a family farm since the land was purchased in 1868.

Phyllis enjoyed being a farm wife. She was also an experienced seamstress, sewing clothes for her family and making wedding gowns for both of her daughters. After her daughter Darcy started junior high school, Phyllis went to work in the kitchen of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital. There she was responsible for the making of salads for the patients and the hospital cafeteria.

Phyllis was a member of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church where she taught both Sunday and Bible School. She was also an active member in the WSCS and the United Methodist Women. Her interests included collecting thimbles and dolls. She enjoyed her many friends, attending the Happy Hour Club, Saint Charles Homemakers, 500 Club, Thursday Coffee Group, Sew and Sews and the South High Alumni.

The past two years Phyllis resided at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage and Cedar Health in Charles City. At both facilities Phyllis received loving attention and care. Phyllis will be remembered as a mother devoted to her children and grandchildren.

Living family members include four children, Judith (Robert) "Corky" Coyne of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lloyd Melcher of Floyd, Gayle (Joy) Melcher of Osage and Darcy (Tracy) Mullenbach of Osage; seven grandchildren, Kristian (Jaenette) Coyne, Nathan ( Kelly), Emily and Jordan Melcher, and Becca, Hanna and Kyle Mullenbach; two sisters, Doris Sharp, of Charles City and Joyce Droel, of Northfield, Minn.; and a brother, Leslie (Lorraine) Anderson, of Minneapolis, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Harold Dunkin and Oscar Melcher (Nov. 8, 1991); and two brothers, Wendell and Willard Anderson.

Smith, Ronald Dean "Ronnie"  
 
BELMOND - Ronald Dean "Ronnie" Smith, 70, of Belmond, longtime owner of Smith Insulation, died unexpectedly, Saturday (Feb. 14, 2009) at his home in Belmond of a rare and aggressive cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 2205 130th St., six miles west of Belmond. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. The Reverend James Gochenouer will be officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family or the donor's choice.

Ronald Dean Smith was born on May 15, 1938, at Belmond, the son of Lavern and Marion (Luick) Smith. He graduated from Belmond HIgh School in 1956. He later attended college in Marshalltown, and studied German at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Ron also served in the United States Army for a time.

Ron was united in marriage to Karen Stites of Clear Lake, on Nov. 30, 1963, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Ron was the longtime owner and operator of Smith Insulation in Belmond for more than 30 years. The commercial insulating business took him to construction jobs all over the state of Iowa.

Ron enjoyed nature and the outdoors and was especially fond of trapping, hunting, and fishing. You'd often find him out walking. He relished every moment he was able to spend on his land and area wildlife habitats enjoying their bountiful wildlife. Ron also loved to polka, often traveling to Polka Fests throughout Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota.

Ron was very proud of his German heritage and his link to the Luick family of Belmond. He looked forward to special times with his family and loved to spend time with his granddaughter, Kelsey. Ron was always ready for a good visit, whether it included conversations about family history, a favorite hunting or fishing story, or a discussion on the latest in trapping and hunting innovations and techniques. He had been a longtime member of the Iowa Trapper's Association and the National Trapper's Association.

Ron is survived by his wife of 45 years, Karen Smith, 1269 Taylor Ave., Belmond, IA, 50421; his son, Thad Dean and special friend, Christina Cagley, of Garner; and his daughter, Nicole Kay Smith, of Garner. Ron also leaves behind his beloved granddaughter and special polka partner, Kelsey Lynn Smith; also surviving is a brother, Richard Smith, of Belmond; and five nephews and three nieces.

Ronald was preceded in death by his mother and father; a brother, Larry Smith; and his very special aunt, Mattie Farmer.

MASON CITY -Rozella "Rose" Wilder, 61, of 911 N. Van Buren Ave., Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 2009) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Steve Hansen officiating.

Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Family suggests memorials to the Rose Wilder Memorial Fund.

Rose was born on July 20, 1947, in Mason City, the daughter of Dean and Beulah (Odom) Pannhoff. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1965.

She worked at the Stein Inn, Mason City, and then worked for KLSS Radio in Mason City, from 1980-1998. She has spent her last four years providing day care for her great-nephew, Gage.

Rose enjoyed reading, gardening and researching her family genealogy.

Rose is survived by her brother, Mitchell Pannhoff, Mason City; sister, Julie Barber and her husband, Roger, of Forest City; niece, Amanda Juhl Pellowski and her husband Matt, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; nephews, Nate Juhl and his wife,Jill and Erik Pannhoff, all of Mason City; and a great-nephew Gage Juhl, of Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Duane and Todd Pannhoff.

MASON CITY - Gladys Marie Andersen, 85, of Mason City died Saturday (Feb. 14, 2009) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A funeral service for Gladys will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Gladys Marie Andersen was born on May 4, 1923, in Silver Lake, Iowa, the daughter of George and Minnie (Sundsvold) Sanvik. Gladys was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. She attended school in Northwood and worked for the Federal Bakery in Northwood.

She was united in marriage to Charles "Charlie" Andersen in Northwood, and to this union a daughter, Judy, was born. During her life the family lived in Fargo, N.D., Salt Lake City, Utah, and Bettendorf before moving back to Northwood and later Rockford. Gladys and her daughter, Judy, worked at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Gladys enjoyed crocheting, loved her cats, was proud to be a Norwegian, playing the piano, loved Big Macs at McDonald's and blueberry pie at Perkins.

Gladys was a strong Lutheran by faith, but also enjoyed attending the Methodist Church in Rockford.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two sisters, Senora Brunsvold of Lake Mills and Eleanor Stromley, a resident of the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, as well as many nieces and nephews and other extended family members and friends.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; daughter, Judy; and four sisters, Gilma Carey, Margaret McQuatters and Lorraine Sanvik, who died in infancy, and Arlene Alitz.

Doege, Wilbur K. "Willie"  
 
BURT - Wilbur K. "Willie" Doege, 81, formerly of Burt, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 2009) in Des Moines.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Burt, with the Rev. Robin Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Burt Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, and will continue one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lewy Body Disease Association or the Door of Faith Mission in Des Moines in his memory.

Wilbur Keith "Willie" Doege was born Aug. 9, 1927, at Titonka to Lawrence and Irma (Tuttle) Doege. Willie attended school at Titonka and farmed with his father. He later enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served his country and was honorably discharged. He then returned to Burt and owned and operated Willie's Billiards.

On Jan. 30, 1955, Willie was joined in marriage to Gladys Groen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple continued to operate Willie's Billiards and the Snack Shop, and Willie farmed part-time. He later worked full-time for Kossuth County Maintenance and retired in 1989.

Willie enjoyed playing cards, watching his favorite baseball teams on television, camping, fishing and gardening. Willie was a jokester and enjoyed telling stories with his great sense of humor. He received a Good Neighbor Award in Burt.

Willie was admitted to the University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines last November and died there on Sunday (Feb. 15, 2009) at the age of 81.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys, of Ankeny; son, Jim Doege and wife Chris of Mason City; daughter, Kathy and husband Ken Pilch of Ankeny; daughter, Karla and husband Shawn O'Toole of Des Moines; and Kendra Doege of Denver, Colo., as well as 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents; two half-brothers, Earl and Vern Rafdal; and half-sister Carol Adams; and several nieces and nephews.

Opal was born May 27, 1911, in Moorhead, Minn., the daughter of Louis and Jessie (Keller) Swanson. She attended school in Moorhead. In 1936, she moved to Mason City. She married George R. Elliott in 1945. She worked for the Independent Medical Surgical Group as a lab assistant for over 30 years

She attended the First Christian Church and was a member of the Women of the Moose. She loved animals.

Opal enjoyed craft work, reading, grocery shopping and making apple pie.

She is survived by one niece, Beverly Breitbarth of Austin, Minn. She is also survived by her best friend, Linda Wendel of Mason City, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1987, her parents; her brother: Loren E. Swanson; five half sisters, one half brother, nephew-in-law: Robert Breitbarth; her favorite nephew: Barry Breitbarth and other nieces and nephews.

OSAGE - Roger William Gratias, 53, of Fort Collins, Colo., and formerly of Osage, passed away Feb. 12, 2009, after a long struggle with frontotemporal dementia.

Roger was born Dec. 19, 1955, in Osage, the son of Paul and LaVera (Nash) Gratias. He grew up on a farm near Nora Springs. He graduated from Nora Springs-Rock Falls High School and earned a degree in business at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn.

After graduating, he worked at Thorp Credit in Iowa for a couple of years and then moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where he worked as a bank loan officer. Roger lived in Cheyenne for 15 years and worked a variety of jobs following his work in banking.

In 1995, he moved to Osage to help care for his father and worked at A to Z Drying for 10 years. Following Roger's dementia diagnosis in 2006, he lived at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, where his father, Paul Gratias, was also a resident. After Paul died in 2007, Roger moved to a dementia care facility in Fort Collins, Colo., to be near his brother, Raymond.

During the next few years, he enjoyed going to his nephew's baseball games, attending church with the family and taking rides in the mountains. Roger spent the final two months of his life in the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of the Rockies.

Everywhere Roger went, he soon made friends and was a favorite resident at the care facilities where he lived. Roger was always proud to be an Iowan and enjoyed cheering for Iowa teams. Church and family were the two most important things in his life.

During his years in Iowa, he worshipped at Eden Presbyterian Church and enjoyed singing in the church choir. His niece and nephews were especially important to him and he was always glad to see them.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at the Eden Presbyterian Church, 3105 Glass Ave., Rudd, with Rev. John Bates officiating. Inurnment will be at the Eden Presbyterian Cemetery.

There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the services at the church.

Roger is survived by his brother, Raymond (Cheryl) Gratias of Fort Collins, Colo.; two nephews, Benjamin Gratias of Fort Collins, Colo., and Justin Mohring of Iowa City; and one niece, Jolene Mohring of Center Point.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mavis Mohring Rosauer.

WEST DES MOINES -Glen E. Haydon, 74, died on Monday (Feb. 16, 2009) at the Kavanagh House on 56th Street after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at McLaren's Chapel, 801 19th St. in West Des Moines, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Glen was born July 31, 1934, in Hampton to Howard and Alice Haydon. He graduated from Mankato State University. In 1954 he married Mary Moninger and had a son, Mark.

He was first employed at KGLO Television in Mason City and delighted young and old with his versions of the characters Professor Fizzle, Bozo the Clown and Ronald McDonald.

He went on to work as the director of the American Red Cross chapter in Mason City and excelled at giving aid and comfort to victims of wars and weather disasters around the world.

He served as the chairman of the Governor's Council on Aging under Gov. Robert Ray.

Glen worked for many years as an administrator at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, and then moved to Northville, Mich., where he served as president of Mercy International Health Services. This position also took him to many remote and exotic places around the world, aiding developing countries in their efforts to provide modernized health care for their citizens.

He was proud to be given the Mary Maurita Sengelaub, RSM, Award for meritorious service in July of 1994.

He retired in 1996 when failing health left him unable to work at the pace he desired. He moved to West Des Moines following his retirement to be near his beloved son and grandchildren. Glen enjoyed serving his church, traveling, storytelling, the Hawkeyes and spending time with his family. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of West Des Moines United Methodist Church.

Glen is survived by his wife, Mary; his son, Mark (Jeanne) Haydon of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Emily and Matthew, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Haydon.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel.

BUFFALO CENTER - Jolene Johnson, 54, of 16 Park Drive in Northfield, Minn., died Friday (Feb. 13, 2009) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Jolene Dearing was born March 14, 1954, in Buffalo Center, the daughter of Willard and Dorothy (Miller) Dearing. She attended and graduated from Rake, Iowa, High School. Jolene married Robert Johnson of Frost on Aug. 28, 1982, at United Lutheran Church in Frost, Minn.

Jolene (Jo) was a happy soul who enjoyed all people, including all the children she cared for over the years at her home day care. She loved to laugh and make others happy.

Jolene and Robert enjoyed going to International Falls, Minn., for deer hunting season and four-wheeling.

Jo loved to visit their children in the southern states and enjoyed their trip to South Padre Island in Texas along with other various trips.

Jolene is survived by her husband, Robert Johnson; two sons, Scott Johnson and wife Kim, and Chad Johnson; grandson, Tyler Johnson; parents, Willard and Dorothy Dearing; sister, Joyce Ehrich; brother Ronald Dearing and wife Ginger; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

MASON CITY - Dorothy Linne, 80, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 14, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Dorothy J. Steinkamp was born May 9, 1928, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Ray and Margaret (Reed) Steinkamp. She graduated from Mason City High School. She worked at Deckers, Montgomery Ward and Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

She was blessed with three children, David, Rick and Suzette Marie. Dorothy was united in marriage to George Linne on Oct. 30, 1990.

Dorothy loved playing bingo, playing cards and shopping at Affordables. She was an avid Vikings fan and enjoyed college basketball. Dorothy loved growing tomato plants and loved her dogs.

Dorothy is survived by her children, David (Kathy) Bartelt of Clear Lake and Rick (Robin) Bartelt of Cedar Falls; grandchildren, Jennifer (Eric) Meyer, of Farmington, Minn., Christina Bartelt, of Thornton; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Ethan Meyer, Carter, Eliot and Vincent Otero along with other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Margaret Steinkamp; infant daughter, Suzette Marie Bartelt; husband, George Linne; and grandson, Adam Bartelt.

CLEAR LAKE - Esther Kennedy Mulhern, 93, of Highway 18 West, Clear Lake, died Monday (Feb. 16, 2009) at the Oakwood Care Center with her loving family by her side.

A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Rhoda Preston officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 West, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service at the church.

Esther was born on July 7, 1915, in Belmond, to George and Christine (Schriner) Weitzel. Esther grew up on the family farm and milked the cows before attending school in South Dakota.

As a young woman, Esther came to Mason City. She married Charles Kennedy in June 1934. Together they raised Charles' four children as well as having two of their own. Esther took care of her family and home. She also worked for Decker meatpacking plant. Charles passed away in 1958. Esther continued to care for her family while working for Decker and finally retiring after 30-plus years in the late 1970s.

In March of 1969, Esther married Marvin Mulhern and they went on to enjoy their families together until Marvin's passing in 1994.

Esther's hobbies were quilting, gardening, growing beautiful flowers and fishing. If she didn't have dirt underneath her fingernails, she didn't think she had worked hard enough. Her main priority in life was to take care of her family, friends and neighbors. She never let anyone leave her house empty-handed.

Esther volunteered at the Handicap Village Store and loved the people she worked with and met through this work. Esther was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

She will be greatly missed by her surviving family and welcomed to heaven by those that have gone before her.

Esther is survived by her daughter, Mary (Roger) Whitnable, of Bussey; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Kennedy, of Fertile; 13 grandchildren, Danny Kennedy of Plymouth, Bobbi Ann (Don) Elbert of Ventura, Kim (Dave) Brue of Forest City, Kathy Wise and friend, Dave VanHorn, of Fertile, Chuck (Sue) Kennedy of Fertile, Steve Whitnable of Golden, Colo., Debbie (Jay) Hildebrand of Des Moines, Kelly (Al) Dickes of Clear Lake, Kristi (Kevin) Wilcke of Clear Lake, Bill (Diane) Kafer of Manly, Karolyn (Kirby) Koch of Iowa Falls, Shirley Otten of Mason City and Clifford McCloud of Cape Coral, Fla.; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - Merlyn E. Olson, 73, of Zionsville, Ind., originally of Mason City, Iowa, died Monday evening (Feb. 16, 2009).

Mr. Olson was born Feb. 28, 1935, in Mason City, Iowa, to Alvin and Leila Schoonover Olson; they preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death on Jan. 29, 2003, by his beloved wife of 48 years, Ervilla Mae Goodnow Olson.

Mr. Olson was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army. In 1989, he retired as a plant manager from Cargill-Nutrena Feeds, where he had worked for many years.

Merlyn is survived by his children, Diane R. Griebel (Bruce) and Mark E. Olson (Roxanne); his grandchildren, Allie and Andrew Griebel and Melissa and Kelsey Olson. He is also survived by his brother, the Rev. William Olson; his sister, Sharon Olson Yohn; his cousin, Richard Olson, and other loving family members.

Charles "Chuck" Francis Asche was born Feb. 2, 1953, in Mason City, the son of Walter Charles and Catherine (Crowley) Asche. He attended grade school at St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated from Newman Catholic High School in 1971. Chuck worked at Curries Manufacturing Co. in Mason City for over 20 years.

Chuck enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, fishing, hunting, playing pool, gardening, reading old hunting and fishing magazines and watching Western movies on TV, but his greatest love and enjoyment was spending time with his family and many friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Cheryl Asche, of Mason City; his children, Heather Wulf of Clear Lake, Derek (Jessica) Smith of Northwood, Emily Asche of Mason City, Benjamin Asche of Northwood, Angela Asche and Christa Asche of Mason City; his parents, Walter and Catherine Asche of Mason City; his sisters and brothers, Christine (Rick) Campbell of Las Vegas, Nev., Julie (Chris) Rye of Mason City, Teresa (Brad) Tietjens of Kensett, and Scott (Donna) Asche of Mason City; also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lula was born Jan. 1, 1919, on a farm north of Ventura, the daughter of Anton and Elsie (Hollatz) Park. She attended Ventura schools. Lula started working as a clerk in a grocery store and then worked in housekeeping in motels.

She enjoyed bowling and was in a league for 17 years. She loved going to state tournaments. She loved baking cookies, growing flowers and going to dances.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura.

Lula is survived by her nieces and nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Laurine Proctor and husband Tom.

MASON CITY -Genevieve Mae Sabin, 83, of Mason City died Friday (Feb. 13, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Magelssen, of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.

WEST DES MOINES -Shirley Ann (Kasik) Watts, 73, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 17, 2009).

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1627 Grand Ave., West Des Moines.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines.

Shirley was born on May 3, 1935, to Helen and Joseph Kasik in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High and was joined in marriage to Lester Watts in the summer of 1953. They were blessed with three children, Bradley, Jackie and JoEllen.

Shirley worked for U.S. West for almost 20 years and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She most recently worked for The Lodge of Ashworth in Administration.

Shirley's first priority and favorite pastime was spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Bradley (Mary) Watts of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Jackie (Bill Schaefer) Watts of West Des Moines and JoEllen Watts of Clive; her former husband, Lester (Judy) Watts of Clive; grandchildren, Amelia and Madeleine Watts, Ryan Gist, Maria, Michael and Katherine Diaz; six great-grandchildren; sister, Betty (George) Pierson of Mason City; numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents.

MANLY - Trina Cecelia Aguilera, 94, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2009) at Manly Nursing and Rehab, Manly.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway, Manly, with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Manly.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St. in Manly, with a rosary being said at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Scriptural wake service.

Trina Cecelia Ochoa was born Nov. 22, 1914, in Mexico, the daughter of Louis and Margarite. She came to the United States when she was 12 years old and grew up in Cambridge, Pa.

Trina was united in marriage to Joseph Aguilera on Aug. 13, 1931, in Minnesota; to this union 12 children were born. Joseph began employment with the Rock Island Railroad which moved the family to Manly, Iowa, in 1940, where they raised their children.

Trina was a homemaker for most of her life when her children were grown she began working as a cook for Mercy Hospital, Mason City.

Trina loved gardening, dancing, canning vegetables, playing bingo and socializing with her friends. Her greatest love was spending time with all of her family especially at Christmas time cooking her authentic Mexican food including tamales and for New Year's, cooking buenelos.

She was an active member and circle member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly, and was a member of the Hispanic American Club.

Trina is survived by her children, Lu DeLaHunt, of Mason City, Margaret (Val) Infante, of Mason City, Maggie (Carroll) Terhark, of Mason City, Rosie (Dennis) Dirksen, of Forest City, Lucy (Dave) Hausman, of Manly, Linda Scott, of Pipe Creek, Texas, Joseph (Ann) Aguilera, of New Braunfels, Texas, Robert Aguilera, of Manly, Tom (Jan) Aguilera, of Ellendale, Minn.; 32 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Lupe Diaz, of Imperial Beach, Calif., Cynthia Caloca, John Castenda and Frank Castenda, all of Florida; brother-in-law, Charles Aguilera, of Mason City; along with several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Trina is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Aguilera; son, David Aguilera; and two infant sons, Joseph and Ralph; grandchildren, Peter, Paul, and Julie Infante, Mindy Cradduck, Scott and Chris Hennigar and Eric and Troy Aguilera.

MARION -Edward "Ed" Michael Boyle, 70, of Marion, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2009) at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, with Father Phil Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Campbell Cemetery in Bertram.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 20, 2009, at the Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, where a vigil service will begin at 6 p.m.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne (Humphrey) Boyle, of Marion; eight children, Michael (Cathy) Boyle, of Ankeny, Greg Boyle, of Omaha, Neb., Scott Boyle, of Mason City, Cynthia Boyle, of Waterloo, Mark (Sheri) Boyle, of Quincy, Ill., Shannon Boyle, of Denver, Meagen (Jason) Granberry, of Detroit, Mich., Callie Boyle of Pullman, Wash.; and three sisters, Rose (Rocky) Rockafellow of North Liberty, Virginia Torgeson, of Northwood, and Sandra (Skip) Bohl, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Joyce Askilson, Shirley Mills, and Clara True; and one brother, Jim Boyle.

Ed was born Aug. 8, 1938, the son of James and Rose (Wolf) Boyle in Milwaukee, Wis. He served with the United States Army.

On Sept. 13, 1969, he married Suzanne Humphrey in Millersburg. Ed was a cement mason by trade and member of the local Union No.561 for 39 years and was also a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.

Ed had a variety of hobbies including reading, fishing, and athletic activities, particularly football and wrestling. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Ed believed in living life as it is dealt; with both its joys and challenges.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Ed's memory.

GARNER - Patricia Buntenbach, 79, of Garner died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2009) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner, with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Cremation will follow with inurnment at a later date in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

Patricia Buntenbach, the daughter of Dr. Earl (Dora) Phillips, was born May 23, 1929, in Garner. She graduated from Garner High School in 1947 and continued her education at Frances Shimer College in Mt. Carroll, Ill., and Iowa State University in Ames.

On Aug. 28, 1949, she was married to E.D. "Red" Buntenbach at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme. They lived in Garner where they raised their family.

Pat had worked at Garner Livestock Sales and operated Mrs. B's Bed and Breakfast for a time.

She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, cooking for others, listening to music, playing bridge, reading and gardening.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, United Presbyterian Women and Progressive Club.

Pat is survived by her husband, E.D. "Red" Buntenbach of Garner; four children, Mary Pat (Steven) Hastings, of Blaine, Minn., Edward P. "Phil" (Jeanine) Buntenbach, of Norwalk, Brian (Shannon) Buntenbach, of Klemme and Andrew (special friend, Teresa) Buntenbach, of Mason City; grandchildren, Benjamin Hastings, Adam (Rachel) Buntenbach, Eric Buntenbach, Wesley Buntenbach, Amanda Wilken and Jocelyn Boss; great-grandchildren, Naiya and Jaeda Hastings and Gavin and Kennedy Buntenbach; and a sister, Jean Hicks, of West Lafayette, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leonard Phillips; and a grandson, Trevor Albertson.

GARNER - Dennis A. Eckert, 56, of Garner died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner, with the Rev. Jim Allard, Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Woodbury Cemetery near Lyle, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel.

Dennis Alden Eckert was born June 1, 1952, at Osage, the ninth of 12 children of Clarence and Fae (Anderson) Eckert. At an early age he moved with his family to Effie, Minn. Dennis graduated from Big Fork High School in 1971 and Eveleth Vo-Tech for graphics in 1973.

After graduation, he moved to Minneapolis where he worked for Hershfield Wallpaper Dist. and the Anoka-Hennepin School District as a printer. He later moved to Mason City where he worked for Wellborne Manufacturing.

On May 23, 1992, he married Lesa Wood at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner. They made their home in Garner where they raised their three children. They later divorced.

Dennis had recently retired from Winnebago Industries in Forest City after 20 years of employment.

He is survived by his three children, Lacie, Abagail and Devon Eckert of Garner; brothers, Ross Eckert, of Coon Rapids, Minn., Emery Eckert of Cedar Falls, Ervin "Pete" Eckert of Crystal, Minn., Robert "Bob" Eckert of Anoka, Minn. and Marvin Eckert of Austin, Minn.; sisters, Donna Ciavarelli of Grafton, Jane Bork of Grafton, Judy Hrdlecka of Grafton, Gloria (Goldie) Cole of Big Fork, Minn. and Connie Fossey of St. Ansgar; aunts; uncles; nieces, nephews; and cousins.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Thera Betsinger.

OSAGE - Evelyn Catherine Gabby, 84, of Osage, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2009) at her daughter's home in Brooklyn Park, Minn., of complications from lung cancer.

Evelyn was born Aug. 27, 1924, in Ionia, the daughter of Jack and Violet Klassen.

In 1954, Evelyn was united in marriage to R. Dale Gabby in Osage. She was a homemaker while raising her children. Later, Evelyn worked for Fox River Mills.

All who knew Evelyn's love for family, friends and dance can be comforted with those memories.

Evelyn was dearly loved by her family and friends, and will be remembered in their hearts forever.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 5:45 p.m.

Evelyn is survived by her six children, Kathy (Tom) McWhite, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Kevin Gabby and Leanne of Andover, Minn., Kenneth (Julie) Gabby of Byron, Minn., Renee Gabby and Dave of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Nancy (Dominic) Alfonso of Eagan, Minn., Jeffrey (Pam) Gabby of Urbandale; 12 grandchildren; her three brothers, Bob (Betty) Klassen, of Ventura, Jack (Greta) Klassen of Duluth, Minn., and Jerry (Vi) Klassen, of Belvidere, Ill.; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Beamer.

ALEXANDER - Marvin D. Jaacks, 76, of Alexander, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2009) at the Belmond Health Care Center, surounded by the love and prayers of his family.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 20, 2009, at the Alexander United Methodist Church, Alexander, with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the Belmond Funeral Unit will be in the Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. Belmond, and will continue from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family or the donor's choice.

Marvin D. Jaacks, the son of Alfred and Bertha (Stephenson) Jaacks, was born March 30, 1932, at Remsen, Iowa. Marvin attended and graduated from Alexander High School.

Following his education, Marvin enlisted in the United States Army on Nov. 21, 1952. He had served part of his military tenure in Germany and various other places. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal First Class, Nov. 9, 1954.

Marvin was united in marriage to Jollene Ann Tinkey, on May 19, 1953, at the Alexander United Methodist Church. Their union was blessed with four children, Greg, Jeff, Steve, and Kim.

In earlier years of his civilian life he had owned and operated his own business, "Marv's Appliance Service". Marvin also farmed from 1961-1962.

For most of his career, Marvin had made a living in the agriculture profession. He had dedicated his skills and knowledge as a plant foreman to the Latham Seed Corporation, Alexander for more than 43 years. He was proud to be a part of the company's growth and vitality. He retired from Latham's in 1997.

Marvin's wife and family was always the main focus in his life. He always strived to provide for all of their needs. He and Jollene were dedicated and loving parents and grandparents. The two enjoyed spectating at any of the extra-curricular activities that their children and grandchildren participated in.

Marvin had served as a scout leader for a number of years, lent his time to coaching Farm Team Baseball and held various offices and served in various roles in the United Methodist Church in Alexander.

Marvin also cared for his community, serving many years on the Alexander City Council and helping out around town when needed.

Marvin loved to spend time attending county fairs and loved to go to the tractor pulls. He enjoyed spending time working on and driving his favorite Allis-Chambers Tractor and had taken it touring on various tractor rides and in parades. Another favorite pasttime included visiting various antique powershows and festivals.

Marvin was a handyman and a very skilled carpenter and was always willing to lend a hand in helping family with carpentry and repair work, as well as assisting his friends and neighboors. He also enjoyed spending time in his yard.

Marvin and Jollene had enjoyed traveling. A couple of their favorite trips included excursions to Hawaii and Cozumel. Jollene preceded Marvin in death on Oct. 2, 2007.

Marvin will be missed by his community and friends. His love and devotion will be deeply missed by his family. They will remember his fatherly ways and gentle caring. His grandchildren will reflect fondly on wonderful memories of Grandpa Marv.

Those left to cherish the memory of Marvin's life and legacy include, his three sons, Greg and wife Donna Jaacks, of Belmond, Jeff and wife Beth Jaacks, of Hampton, and Steve Jaacks, of Alexander; his grandchildren, Luke Smith and his special friend Jess, Alexander, Trisha Jaacks, Clear Lake, Sandy and husband Zach Willms, Belmond, Lindsey and husband Josh Showalter, Sheffield, and Jeremy Jaacks, Hampton; his great-grandchildren, Samantha Smith, Alexander, and Ashlynn and Ashton Willms, Belmond; two sisters, Patricia (Milford) Benson, Souix City, and Geraldine and husband "Sonny" Phillip Haaf, Cedar Rapids, and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jollene; daughter, Kim Smith; and son-in-law, William Smith.
