David
G. Punke
NEVADA — David G. Punke, 67, of Nevada
and formerly of Clear Lake, died of
cancer on Tuesday (July 19, 2005) at
Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m. Saturday at the Memorial Lutheran
Church, 701 11th St. in Nevada, due to
renovation of the United Methodist
Church. Following a luncheon, burial
will be held at 3 p.m. at the Lincoln
Township Cemetery north of Clear Lake.
Visitation will be Friday with the
family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at the
Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.
David was born Nov. 27, 1937, in Mason
City, to Alma Davis Punke and Gus E.
Punke. He grew up on a farm north of
Clear Lake. He was a 1955 graduate of
Clear Lake High School and a 1959
graduate of Iowa State University.
After six months of active duty in the
U.S. Army Reserves, he returned to Mason
City and accepted a position with
Production Credit Association. In 1965,
he was given a position with the Farm
Credit Bank in Omaha, and in 1969 was
promoted to a vice president with the
responsibility of establishing an
Iowa-area office in Ames. He retired in
1996 but continued to do special
projects for the Webster City Farm
Credit office for three years.
On April 15, 1967, he married Jane
Angelo in Des Moines. Twin sons, James
and Steven, were born to them on Nov.
27, 1970.
David was a long-time active member of
the First United Methodist Church in
Nevada and was a consecrated Stephens
Minister. He was a founding member of
the Nevada Kiwanis Club, a library board
member and enjoyed gardening, Civil War
history, Iowa agriculture and travel.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; sons,
Dr. James Punke, Pella, and Dr. Steven
Punke, Kansas City, Kan. Also surviving
is his brother, Joel (Phyllis) Punke,
Clear Lake, a nephew, Chris (Heather)
Punke, Ankeny, a niece, Michele Punke,
Portland, Ore., step-niece Kim Harris
and step-nephews Steve, Mike and Rob
Rollefson.
His parents preceded him in death.

to the First United Methodist Church of
Nevada, Israel Family Hospice House or
the Nevada Public Library.

PLYMOUTH, Minn. — Dr. W. Gene Garrett,
77, of Plymouth, Minn., and formerly of
Mason City, died Sunday (July 17, 2005)
at the Hillcrest Care Center in Wayzata,
Minn.
Funeral services for Dr. Garrett will be
held at 10 a.m. Friday at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.,
with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore of
First Presbyterian Church officiating.
Interment will be in the Dumont
Cemetery, Dumont.

On July 17, 2005, after a struggle of
more than 15 years, Dr. Wilmer Gene
Garrett finally succumbed to
complications of Parkinson's disease.
Gene was born on his grandparents' farm
in Dumont on May 1, 1928, the son of
Ward C. and Edith (Meehan) Garrett.
After graduating from Abraham Lincoln
High School in Council Bluffs in 1946,
he served for two years as a corpsman at
the U.S. Navy Hospital in San Diego,
Calif. He received his undergraduate
degree from the University of Iowa in
1951 and graduated from the University
of Iowa College of Medicine in 1955.
Gene received training in pediatrics at
the Children's Hospital in Denver,
Colo., and then practiced pediatrics in
Bismarck, N.D., from 1958-71. While in
Bismarck, he was active as a member of
First Presbyterian Church, serving as
director of children's education, a
deacon and ordained ruling elder. Gene
was a founding member of the board of
directors of the Bismarck YMCA.
In 1971, Gene moved to Mason City, where
he practiced at the Park Clinic until
1978. He was a founding partner of the
Pediatric and Adolescent Clinic in 1978
and practiced there until 1990. During
his time in practice, he also served as
president of the Cerro Gordo Medical
Society and president of the Medical
Staff of Mercy Medical Center. Overall,
he practiced pediatrics for 32 years.
Known simply as "Doc" to a generation of
Boy Scouts in northern Iowa, Gene served
as Scoutmaster of Troop 212 at Roosevelt
School for 14 years. He received the
Eagle Scout Award as a boy in 1944, as
did his four sons and more than 70 other
Scouts during his tenure as Scoutmaster.
Gene received training in the Wood
Badge, was a Vigil member of the Order
of the Arrow and was awarded the Silver
Beaver, the highest honor given to
volunteer Scouters.
On Aug. 4, 1951, he married Valera P.
McCumber. Val and Gene shared almost 54
years together as devoted partners. They
have four sons and seven grandchildren:

Garrett in Plymouth, Minn., Michael

preceded in death by his sister,

Alvin B. Shippy, the son of Ira B. and
Betsy Pearl (Pratt) Shippy, was born
June 23, 1916, in Buchanan County, Iowa.
He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran
Church in Maynard. He attended Coytown
and Bell country school in Buchanan
County.
He was united in marriage to Maxine Paul
on Nov. 14, 1943, at St. Paul Lutheran
Church in Maynard.
He farmed before working at Lauer
Implement and the Hawk-Bilt Co. He ran
the Standard Service Station in Hawkeye
and became a welder for Fayette County.
He retired from Fayette County in 1982.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church in Hawkeye. He enjoyed fishing,
working on tractors and telling stories.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Maxine,
of Fayette; three sons, Marvin (Mary)
Shippy of Alpha, Iowa, James (Bonnie)
Shippy of Dubuque and Larry (Lory)
Shippy of Clear Lake; six grandchildren,
Paula, Carla, Sheila, Josh, Jake and
Reed, and three great-grandchildren,
Evan, Ann Marie and Isabelle.

in Northwood, graduating
in 1928.
He was married to Nadine
Dahl of Northwood on
Aug. 28, 1938. They made
their home on the
Buchanan farm for 62
years. He fed beef
cattle all his life
until retiring at the
age of 80. He was very
proud to be a farmer.
He served on the school
board of District 50 of
Gordonsville and was
instrumental in the
establishment of
Glenville High School
and served on the first
school board for
District 241.
He was active in the
United Methodist Church
in Gordonsville and
helped build the new
Gordonsville UMC Church
in 1955. He became a
member of Albert Lea UMC
after the closing of the
Gordonsville Church.
Wilbur and Nadine
enjoyed square dancing
and did a lot of
traveling throughout the
United States and
Europe. He was very
interested in
automobiles, tractors
and trains, and talked
about riding the train
to Chicago and St. Paul
to take the cattle to
market. He enjoyed
spending time with his
family and telling his
many memories of earlier
times.

Edwin Ray Pentico, the
son of Ray and Viva
(Trickel) Pentico, was
born Dec. 10, 1923, at
Emmetsburg. He attended
school in Emmetsburg and
finished his education
in Minnesota.
He was united in
marriage to Theresa
Latourelle on Nov. 17,
1943. He served in the
United States Army
during World War II,
where he saw action in
Germany, France and
Belgium.
Following his discharge
in 1947, Ed and Theresa
made their home in
Minnesota where he
farmed for a time, then
continued his
truck-driving career.
The couple made their
homes in southern
Minnesota, Iowa and
California, until moving
to Bode in 1966.
After retiring from
truck driving in 1982,
Ed became a bus driver
for mentally handicapped
children in the Bode
area. Mrs. Pentico
passed away in 2002 and
Ed continued to maintain
his home until becoming
a resident of the
Humboldt Care Center
North in May of this
year.
Mr. Pentico enjoyed his
involvement with his
children's baseball
games, yard work,
woodworking and coffee
time in downtown Bode.

Jean loved to go
boating, traveling,
gardening and going to
casinos.
She is survived by her

Forrest Lester Peterson,
the son of Melvin and

Peterson, was born April
10, 1933, on a farm in
Ellington Township,
Hancock County. He was
baptized and confirmed
at Winnebago Lutheran
Church and attended the
rural schools of Mt.
Valley Township in
Winnebago County.
Following his schooling,
he worked for several
farmers in the area and
also at Schram's
Chevrolet in Forest City
as an auto body
repairman. Forrest
served his country
during the Korean
Conflict in the U.S.
Army from 1953 to 1955.
Following his discharge,
he returned to Forest
City and continued to
work at Schram's.
On June 15, 1957, he
married Patricia
Brighton at the United
Methodist Church in
Forest City. They lived
in Forest City where
they raised their
family. Forrest worked
for 25 years at Kamish
Ford and later at Dale's
Body Shop and Barth's
Repair, all in Forest
City. Most recently, he
was employed by the city
of Forest City as the
cemetery custodian at
Oakland Cemetery. He
enjoyed trail riding and
spending time with
family and friends.
He was a member of the
United Methodist Church,
the Forest City Fire
Department for more than
23 years, and the Forest
City American Legion
Post No. 121.
Forrest is survived by
his wife, Patricia, of
Forest City; a son,
Tracy (Ronda) Peterson
of Earlham; a daughter,
Sally (Greg) Matters of
Ames; five
grandchildren: Brian
(Lindsey) Peterson, Dan
(Shannon) Peterson,
Andrea Peterson, and
Valerie and Kelly
Matters; a sister, Rose
Meinecke of Forest City;

Reva Mabel Waddingham,
the daughter of Ralph
Walter and Mabel Ellen
(Fuller) Elder, was born
May 15, 1913, at Klemme.
She attended school at
Klemme, graduating from
high school in 1930.
Reva received her
teaching certificate at
Iowa State University in
Ames and then taught for
a year at Prairie Queen
rural school near
Klemme.
On March 28, 1934, she
was married to John
"Jack" William
Waddingham at the United
Methodist Church in
Klemme. They farmed
southeast of Klemme
until retiring from
farming in 1971.
They moved into Garner
where Reva worked at
Concord Care Center,
Prairie View Apartments
and the Hancock County
Care Facility. In 1988,
she moved to Prairie
View Apartments. Reva
enjoyed embroidering,
fresh flowers every
week, puzzles, sports,
family gatherings and
going to the beauty
shop.
She was a member of the
United Methodist Church
in Klemme, UMW and the
Quilters Group.
She is survived by her

Charles William Stiles
was born Oct. 6, 1920,
in Swea City, the son of
Vaughn and Alta (Potter)
Stiles. He graduated
from Charles City High
School in 1938.
On Oct. 5, 1941, he was
united in marriage to
Helen Erickson at
Charles City. Charles
retired after 37 years
from the Oliver/White
Farm Corp.
He was a member of
Trinity United Methodist
Church. Charles enjoyed
woodworking and created
many items for both his
family and the church.
Both Charles and Helen
were avid Comettes
softball fans,
supporting the teams in
various ways over the
years.

include his wife, Helen,
of Charles City; four

She was a 50-year member
of the Beta Sigma Phi
sorority where she held
many offices over the
years.
She is survived by her
husband of 67 years,

children, Elizabeth and
Andrew, and Susan (John
A.) Downey of Atlanta,

June Irene Bishop was
born June 11, 1917, in
Cerro Gordo County, on
the home place near Nora
Springs. She was the
first of three daughters

(Arzberger) and Blaine
Bishop. June grew up in
the Nora Springs and
Plymouth areas,
graduating as
valedictorian of her
class in 1944 at
Plymouth. In her early
years, she taught school
at Grafton, Dayton,
Fayette and other
schools.
June married Walter
Thomas Scherb on Aug.
17, 1947, in Mason City.
June and Walter moved to
the farm in Scarville in
1952, where she resided
until 1996, at which
time she moved to
Rockford and later to
Charles City to be near
her daughter.
June and Walter were
blessed with three
children: Yolanda,
Dwayne and Greg. After
moving from the farm,
June enjoyed visiting
with her apartment
neighbors, going to the
Rockford Senior Center,
playing cards and
traveling. She enjoyed
staying informed by
reading several
newspapers and
completing many crewel
needlework pieces. She
was a long time member
of Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Scarville.
June is survived by her
daughter, Yolanda (Paul)
Van Ausdall of Charles
City; sons, Dwayne
(Tina) Scherb of Rolling
Prairie, Ind., and Greg
(Rita) Scherb of
Scarville;
grandchildren,

in Bella Vista. He was
born on Aug. 28, 1925,
in Mason City, Iowa, to
John James Burnett and
Margaret (Siesseger)
Burnett.
He was raised and
educated in Mason City.
He served in the U.S.
Army Air Corps during
World War II from
1943-1946. Bill married
Kathleen Arnold on May
8, 1947, in Mason City.
Bill received a B.A.
degree from Iowa State
Teachers College in
Cedar Falls. He taught
school for 10 years in
Mason City. He worked
for the Department of
Public Safety in Des
Moines and later for the
U.S. Department of
Transportation in
Washington, D.C., and
Denver, Colo. He
received a master's
degree from Central
Missouri State
University in 1969. He
retired in 1984 and
moved to Bella Vista in
1988. He was an active
member of St. Bernard's
Catholic Church and St.
Bernard's Men's Club and
the V.F.W. Post 9063. He
enjoyed golf, football,
hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death
by his parents and
brothers, John and
Patrick.
He is survived by his
wife of 58 years,

music, and gardening,

passion. She enjoyed
baking and canning goods
that came from her
garden.

short
battle
with
cancer.
He
received
his
education
in Lake
Mills
and
served
in the
Army in
World
War II.
On Feb.
19,
1950, he
was
united
in
marriage
to Iris
Judene
Heyer in
Woden.
To this
union,
six
children
were
born.
He was a
50-year
member
of the
United
Methodist
Church
in
Marble
Rock.
They
lived in
Hampton,
Greene
and then
Marble
Rock.
Many
hours
were
spent in
the
Tweedybird
camper
school
bus as
the
family
was
growing
up.
During
this
time,
Dean
worked
for
Klassi
Hardware
repairing
TVs and
radios.
He later
worked
with
Klassi
Ford
Motor,
where
one of
his
specialties
was
keeping
the 1957
through
1959
Ford
Skyliner
retractable
hardtop
convertibles
working
smoothly.
Dean was
self-employed
as a
"jack of
all
trades
and
master
of
many."
Electrician,
mechanic,
carpentry
and
plumbing
were a
few of
his
talents.
Then he
went
into
business
in
Marble
Rock as
Dean's
Radio &
TV,
selling
new
televisions
and home
repair
of TVs
and
radios.
He was
remembered
for
bringing
a TV to
the
Marble
Rock
School
so the
students
could
watch
John
Glenn
orbit
the
earth.
He was a
good
communicator
and
always
had a
story to
tell to
anyone
that
would
listen.
Dean
also
remodeled
homes
and farm
buildings,
and kept
several
Marble
Rock and
Dougherty
farmers'
operations
running
smoothly
with his
innovative
repairs.
He
retired
in 1989
after a
fall in
Lake
Mills
that
limited
his
physical
abilities.
Dean and
Iris
also ran
the
Laundry
of ID in
Marble
Rock
until
April
2005,
when he
was
diagnosed
with
cancer.
He is
survived
by his
wife,
Iris, of
Marble
Rock;
two
sons,

Edward
Midlang
was born
on Feb.
20,
1916, in
rural
Kensett,
the son
of
Leonard
and Edna
(Evenson)
Midlang.
He
received
his
education
at the
Brookfield
Township
Country
School
and
graduated
as
valedictorian
from
Kensett
High
School.
After
graduation,
he began
farming
and
farmed
until
his
retirement.
Norris
married
Luella
Hass on
June 29,
1939.
They
were
united
in
marriage
until
her
death in
1987. In
1988,
Norris
was
united
in
marriage
to
RoseAnn
Humburg
at the
St.
Joseph
Catholic
Church,
Mason
City.
Norris
enjoyed
wintering
in the
southern
states
and
traveling.
He was a
remarkable
craftsman.
He
enjoyed
woodworking,
creating
many
furniture
pieces
and
items
for his
family
and
friends.
He was
confirmed
and a
member
at the
Elk
Creek
Lutheran
Church,
where he
served
on the
church
council
and
Couples
Club.
Norris
also
served
on the
Kensett
Telephone
Board,
Manly
Co-op
and
Elevator
Board,
United
States
Department
of
Agricultural
Commodity
Credit
Corp.
and the
Farmers
Home
Administration
Board.
Norris
was
especially
proud of
his
plentiful
harvests,
which
one year
won him
runner-up
in the
Worth
County
Corn
Growing
Competition.
Left to
cherish
his
memory
are his
wife,
RoseAnn,
Mason
City;
three
children,
Ronald
(Sharon)
Lance,
Cedar
Falls,
Donna
(Luther)
Rhodes,
Destin,
Fla.,
and
Darlene
Midlang,
North
Branch,
N.Y.;
one
step-son,
Steve
(Connie)
Humburg,
Norfolk,
Neb.;
four
grandchildren,
Scott

Carina

great-grandchildren,

by his

He is

by his
