FOREST CITY - Amy Brakke, 82, of Forest City, died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Interment will be in Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City.

BRITT - Curtis D. Jenson, 74, of Britt, died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at home.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Crystal Lake Methodist Church, Crystal Lake, with Pastor Gary Marzoff officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

HAMPTON - Thomas Dale Bell, 77, of Hampton, died Sunday (Oct. 24, 1999) at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

OSAGE - Esther M. Faulkner, 92, of Osage and formerly of Keosauqua, died Sunday (Oct. 24, 1999) at the Faith Lutheran Home, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, with the Rev. Gary Gilbert officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Fellows Cemetery in Keosauqua.

PERRY - Ethelyn Ramsay, 96, of Perry, formerly of the Vinton, Garrison and Garner areas, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home, Perry.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Overton-Van Steenhuyse Funeral Home, Vinton, with the Rev. Patrick Sheahan of the Presbyterian Church of Vinton officiating. Burial will be in the Garrison Cemetery, Garrison.

CHARLES CITY - Shirley (Mrs. Wayne) Ames, 74, of 110 Central Ave., died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Jack Ivey officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

McGREGOR - Irene C. Mosher, 95, of Michigan City, Ind., formerly of McGregor, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) in Michigan City.

RUTH ELAINE LESTRUD

NORTHWOOD - Ruth Elaine Lestrud, 71, of Northwood, died Sunday (Oct. 24, 1999) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer and the Rev. Al Stoa officiating. Burial will be in Elk Creek Cemetery, rural Kensett.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, and will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Ruth Elaine Lestrud was born Sept. 30, 1928, in Miltonville, the daughter of Fred and Dena (Weibrandt) Neuman. She was confirmed in 1942 at Zion Lutheran Church. She was married to Selmer Lestrud on Jan. 30, 1947, in Albert Lea, Minn.

Ruth grew up in the Bolan and Northwood area and attended country schools around Northwood. She worked at Carroll George Company in Northwood for 11 years and also worked at the Midway Café, Northwood.

Ruth was a past member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett, and was a member of First Lutheran Church, Northwood, being active in church circles in both.

She is survived by six children, Gerald Lestrud and his wife, Edna, of Northwood, Sylvia Praska and her husband, Larry, of Bondurant, Kenneth Lestrud and his wife, Pam, of Green Bay, Wis., Julie Thorson, of Lake Mills, Susan Valger, of Lake Mills and Richard Lestrud and his wife, Oralia, of Thompson; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene Flatness and her husband, Kenny, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Shirley Bratrud and her husband, Marvin, of Kensett; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, William in infancy, William, Dickie, August, Herman and Ernest Neuman; one sister, Bertha Garr; and one grandson, Timothy Loux.

SAMUEL HOHENFIELD

HAWARDEN - Samuel Hohenfield, 76, of Hawarden, formerly of Mason City, died suddenly on Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at his residence in Hawarden.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with readers Richard Davis and Bryan Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at noon today at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will be additional visitation from noon until time of services on Wednesday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel in Mason City.

Samuel Valentine Hohenfield was born Feb. 14, 1923, at Beatrice, Neb., the son of Rudy and Helen (Runge) Hohenfield. He moved to Mason City, at the age of 14 and worked on the Roosevelt School at the age of 15.

He spent two years with the Conservation Corps camp in Bancroft, and worked for 10 years at the packing plant in Mason City. He was employed for two years at the ammunition depot in Hastings, Neb., and for 33 years with the Burlington Northern, Chicago Northwestern and the Milwaukee Railroads. He made his homes at Burt, Iowa and Bladen, Neb., before moving to Hawarden in 1998 to be closer to his granddaughter.

Samuel was a long-time member of the Moose Lodge.

Surviving relatives include his son, Michael and his wife, Pat, of Bladen, Neb.; brother, Donald "Butch" of Rockford, Ill.; six sisters, Eylenne Redman, of Mason City, Virginia Thomas, of Rantoul, Ill., Loretta Schultz, Geraldine Bramson and Lois Beery, all of Mason City and Vera Husak, of Mankato, Minn.; three grandchildren, Patrick Hohenfield, Michalle Hedden and Jamie Hohenfield; and eight great-grandchildren.

Samuel was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Loren; and a sister, Betty Albright.

DIXIE LEE ALLEN

MASON CITY - Dixie Lee Allen, 64, formerly of Mason City, died Oct. 18, 1999, in Landers, Calif.

Dixie was born Feb. 15, 1935, to Lloyd and Ruth Allen of Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School and Mason City Junior College. She taught sixth grade for one year in the Des Moines area. She moved to Southern California and became an executive for Connecticut Life Insurance Company.

On retirement she moved to the Mojave Desert, where she shared a home with her brother, Jerry and his wife, Shirley. They were the care givers when cancer set in. The family was very grateful for the help from hospice during this time. Cremation and memorial services will be held in California at a later date.

Dixie was a kind and gentle person who shared her life with many friends and family. Her love of reading and learning stayed with her to the end.

Family left to miss her are Ronald and Patsy Paul, of Bemidji, Minn., Jerry and Shirley Allen, of Landers, Calif., Don and Rose Allen, of Mason City, Dorothy Blakesley, of Lynden, Wash., Gale Allen, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Wilbur and Barbara Smiley, of Mason City, and Jesse and Mary Jane Allen, of Plymouth.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Floyd and Ruth Allen; brothers, Bud Allen and Jack Allen; and sister, Esther Wyant.

GEORGE E. SIMON

ROCKWELL - George E. Simon, 98, of 210 Jefferson, Rockwell, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St., Rockwell, with the Rev. Louis Bram of the First Baptist Church of Rockwell officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Chapel.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the First Baptist Church or the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

George was born on May 11, 1901, on a farm near Hancock, the son of William and Caroline Lena (Young) Simon. He attended rural school, worked on the family farm and, in 1919, began his trucking career driving on a creamery route for the Rockwell Cooperative Creamery. About 1932 he purchased his own equipment and started Simon Trucking Company.

In 1926 he was united in marriage to Bonnie Reineke. To this union was born one son, James. George also raised riding horses and was known for his hard work. He served the community of Rockwell on the city council and was on the board of directors of the Rockwell Co-op. He attended the First Baptist Church.

Those thankful for sharing in George's life include his son, James and his wife, Jane Simon, of Ames; two grandchildren, Lori and her husband, Rick Richardson, of Wilson, N.C., and Jami Simon, of New York; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Richardson, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Allison Richardson, of Wilson, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Simon, of Mason City, and Gladys Wearda, of Rockwell; and many nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, in December of 1997; his parents, two sisters, Ada Ward and Charlotte Christiansen; and six brothers, Oscar, Richard, Clarence, Charles, Irvin and Gilbert.

TITONKA - George Senne, 94, of Titonka, died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

CHARLES CITY - John H. Wilke, 60, of Northfield, Ill., formerly of Charles City, died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at Northfield.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon on Friday at the St. Philip Apostle Church, Northfield, Ill. Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

AMY BRAKKE

FOREST CITY - Amy Brakke, 82, of Forest City, died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at the Heritage Care Center in Lake Mills

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills. Burial will be in the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Amy Olive Lovick Brakke was born on June 14, 1917, on the rented farm of her parents, Henry and Ida (Hanson) Lovick. She was baptized by the Rev. Gronskov of the Bethel Lutheran Church and was confirmed at the Fertile Lutheran Church. She went to country school Mt. Valley No. 6, then graduated from Forest City High School. She taught in different schools in North Iowa.

She married Donald M. Brakke on May 18, 1939, at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. They lived and worked on a farm northeast of Forest City their entire lives. Amy raised chickens and sold eggs in the neighborhood. She worked several years at the Winnebago County Home.

Friends and neighbors were always welcome in her home to have coffee, lunch or a meal. She was an excellent cook. Dan and Amy's farm seemed to be the neighborhood gathering place. Everyone was always welcome. Amy was a member of Winnebago Lutheran Church and active in ladies aid there. She moved to a nursing home in Mason City in June of 1995 when she was no longer able to stay at home.

Amy is survived by a daughter and her husband, Dianne and Frank Riley, of Osceola; three grandchildren, Matthew Riley and his wife, Ember, of Kansas City, Mo., Kory Riley and his wife, Dana, of Des Moines, and Kristen Kouba and her husband, Brent, of West Des Moines; five sisters, Murlette Hagen, of Lake Mills, Pearl Hanna, of Forest City, Alice Toresdahl, of Clear Lake, Elaine Ollenburg, of Ventura and Doris Bonstetter, of Clear Lake; four brothers, James Lovick, of Fertile, Leo Lovick, of Ackley, Ardie Lovick of Washington, Iowa, and Larry Lovick, of Forest City; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Lovick, of Forest City.

Amy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald, who died on Aug. 15, 1994; a brother, Paul Lovick; a sister, Irene Brakke; a brother-in-law, Harvey Brakke; a half brother-in-law, Bob Brakke; two half sisters-in-law, Ethel Haugen and Helen Brones; and three brothers-in-law, Gilman Hagen, Gordon Toresdahl and Raymond Hanna.

ALGONA - Dwaine C. Lighter, 78, of Algona, died Tuesday (Oct. 26, 1999) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Algona, with the Rev. Phil Webb officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, with military graveside services.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.

CURTIS DEAN JENSON

BRITT - Curtis Dean Jenson, 74, of 3085 Iowa Ave., Britt, died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at his home near Crystal Lake.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at Crystal Lake Methodist Church, Crystal Lake, with Pastor Gary Marzolf officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Home in Britt.

Curtis Dean Jenson was born Dec. 27, 1924, in Crystal Township, Hancock County. He was the son of Julius Jenson and Olga Larson Jenson. Curtis attended school in Crystal Lake, graduating in 1942.

Curtis was married Sept. 19, 1945, to Leona Alexander at the Crystal Lake Methodist Church. He then served in the U.S. Army in 1946.

Curtis was involved in farming all his life and worked two years at Winnebago Industries in addition to farming.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Jenson; daughters, Rosalyn Smith and her husband, Marvin, of Sioux City, and Telene Bettcher and her husband, Mike, of Oshkosh, Wis.; two stepgrandsons, Lolane Smith and his wife, Debbie and their two children, Kayla and Jerod, and Dorin Smith and his wife, Carrie and their two children, Shannen and Dorisa, all of Des Moines; Mark Jenson and his wife, Liz, of Gillette, Wyo., their daughter, Karen and stepson, Peter Newhall, of Texas; Kurt Jenson and special friend, Sybil Williams, of West Yellowstone, Mont., and his two daughters, Rebecca and Melanie, of Aberdeen, Wash.; Bart Jenson and his wife, Teresa, of Des Moines and their three children, Gregory, Nina and Louise; and Kelly Jenson and his fiancee, Sheri Peck and her children; his sisters, Mavis Olin, of Spencer, and Carole Siepmann, of Bettendorf.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Jenson; and one foster brother, Donald Jenson.

RUBY H. HODGIN

MASON CITY - Ruby H. Hodgin, 89, of 1102 N. Hampshire Ave., died Oct. 6, 1999, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at the First Baptist Church, 129 E. State St., with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating. There will be private inurnment in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation, as her wish was cremation.

Ruby was born Nov. 6, 1909, in Mason City, the daughter of Johann Frederick C. and Ida (Engelemann) Johannsen. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1926 and was married to Luther Hodgin on May 7, 1942, at the First Baptist Church in Mason City.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she was the church historian and also active in church circle. She enjoyed helping the Community Kitchen and working in her garden. She was a member of the Rake and Hoe Garden Club. She was a former member of the North Iowa Quilters and other community groups. Ruby also enjoyed traveling, and on her visits to Austria she joined her family and helped with the Orphans Relief Program and Project Centipede in Romania.

She is survived by daughters Louise Pickart and her husband, Heinz, of Vienna, Austria, and Marthajean Bolgren and her husband, Bill, of Andover, Minn.; granddaughters Heidi and Amanda Bolgren, of Andover, Minn.; stepgranddaughter, Astrid Pickart, of Vienna, Austria; sisters, Frieda Cooper, of Mason City, and Alta Lynch, of Grants Pass, Ore.; sister-in-law, Eleanor G. Johannsen, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Luther, on Oct. 18, 1988; brothers, Clifford and Karl Johannsen; and sister, Pearl Anderson.

FLORA JANE (KINDLESPIRE) JONES

SPIRIT LAKE - Flora Jane (Kindlespire) Jones passed away Monday afternoon (Oct. 25, 1999) at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Spirit Lake. She had been in the hospital a short time before her demise.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Spirit Lake.

Turner Funeral Home, Spirit Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Flora, 93, was the daughter of Orin Sylvester Kindlespire and Nettie Jane (Brown) Kindlespire. She came from a family of four girls and five boys. She was born in Martin, Weakly County, Tenn. When she was about nine years old, her family moved to Iowa, where her father was a barber for a short time before moving to Ruthven, where he farmed. Flora received her formal education and, after graduation, taught school for a number of years.

On April 2, 1927, she was united in marriage to Glen Ward Jones at Estherville, where the couple farmed. To this union, five children were born, Charlotte Rae, Marvin Sylvester, Roger William, Shelby Lee and Victor Lyman.

She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She and Glen celebrated their 72nd Wedding Anniversary this year. In addition to her daughter and sons, she has 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was devoted to her husband, her family, her home and her church, belonging to the ladies circle for a number of years. She enjoyed her trips to Arizona in the winter until her health required her to seek care in the Milford Nursing Center in Milford. She enjoyed the church services and the bingo games there.

She is survived by her husband, Glen; her children, Charlotte Rae (Mrs. Warren) Tilton, of Mason City, Marvin Jones, of Tempe, Ariz., Roger Jones, of Okoboji, Shelby Jones, of West Des Moines, and Victor Jones, of Tempe, Ariz.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and dear friends of many years.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; and her brothers and sisters.

MASON CITY - Nathan R. Northrup, 90, of 302 Second St. N.W., died Tuesday morning (Oct. 26, 1999) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

VIRLEY ANN HEINE

CLEAR LAKE - Virley Ann Eilers Heine was born on March 11, 1928, to George and Fannie (Hinders) Eilers in Stout, Iowa. She passed away on Wednesday (Oct. 27, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, with John Ayers and the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the church.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Virley graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1944 and then worked as a legal secretary. In 1947 she married James Heine at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. They made their home in Conrad, Iowa, until 1967 when they moved to Clear Lake. Four children, their spouses and nine grandchildren have enriched Jim and Virley's wonderful marriage.

For the last 20 years, Virley had enjoyed working as a real estate agent for Iowa Realty in Clear Lake. She loved spending time with her family, going to the beach in Florida, golf, bridge, reading, crosswords, trips with her friends and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

KLEMME - Esther (Johnson) Hess, 100, of Klemme, died Tuesday (Oct. 26, 1999) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Klemme, with the Rev. Curtis DeVance officiating. Interment will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Esther (Johnson) Hess, the daughter of John Axel and Taalena Brotton (Anderson) Johnson, was born on Sept. 27, 1899, on a farm in rural Kanawha near the Twin Lakes. She attended country school in rural Kanawha through the 4th grade. At that time, she quit school to take care of her younger siblings at home.

Esther was working at a candy factory in Chicago, Ill., when she met her future husband, Jake. She and Jacob John Hess were united in marriage on May 15, 1926, in Chicago. The couple made their home in Chicago for two years, and then they moved to rural Klemme in 1928. They farmed around Klemme, where Esther loved to raise ducks, until they retired and moved into town in 1946. Jacob died on March 28, 1978.

She had a passion for flowers and gardening - something she took great pride in doing. She was frequently referred to as the "Flower Lady."

Esther was awarded many ribbons for her flowers and she showed them regularly at the Klemme Garden Club flower shows and at the Hancock County Fair. She was also very active in the Klemme United Methodist Church and the Women's Circles, the American Legion Auxiliary, Klemme Senior Citizens and the Klemme Garden Club. Esther entered the Concord Care Center in Garner on Jan. 25, 1999.

Survivors include her sister, Ruth Nuehring, of Mason City; a special niece, Marie Perkins, of Klemme; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jacob; four brothers, John, Bert, Alfred and Carl; and three sisters, Edith Caroline Johnson, Alice Hummel and Nora Perkins.

Luigi Antonio Napoletano was born June 29, 1911, in Penne, Italy, son of Antonio and Mary (Marrone) Napoletano. He married Dorothy DeWall on Oct. 10, 1945, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

Luigi came to the United States at the age of 14 months. He became a naturalized citizen on April 9, 1940. He lived in Rock Falls until 1945 and served in World War II from May 10, 1941, to June 7, 1943, in the European-African Theater Campaign.

Luigi worked at Marshall and Swift Cleaners and later at Northwestern Portland Cement Company for 25 years, retiring in 1976. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Clausen Worden Post 101, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Napoletano, of Mason City; three children, Mark Napoletano and his wife, Mary, of Rochester, Minn., Karen Beyer and her husband, Allen, of Green Bay, Wis., and Denise Pedelty and her husband, Sid, of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren, Scot Napoletano and his wife, Erika, stationed on the USS Kitty Hawk in the U.S. Navy in Japan, Gina Napoletano of Rochester, Minn., Sarah Napoletano, of Rochester, Minn., Jason Beyer and his wife, Jodi, of Fort Atkinson, Wis., and Karmen Beyer, of Rochester, Minn.; one sister, Rose Kendrick of Houston, Texas; one sister-in-law, Lorene Napeltane of Chula Vista, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

WEBSTER CITY - Jay Anderberg, 47, of Webster City, died Thursday (Oct. 21, 1999) at Hamilton Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at the Amsterdam Cemetery, west of Kanawha, with the Rev. JoAn Skyrme officiating.

Mr. Anderberg's body was cremated and there was no visitation. Foster Funeral Home, Webster City, was in charge of arrangements.

Jay Stanley Anderberg, son of Stanley and Ardella (Severson) Anderberg, was born April 14, 1952, at Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School and North Iowa Area Community College.

On Feb. 23, 1991, he married Nancy Groom Helland at Rowan. The couple resided at Kamrar, then Webster City. He had been employed at Frigidaire for nine years.

He was a member of the United Church of Rowan.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; stepsons, Michael Helland, in the U.S. Navy in Virginia, and Christopher Helland of Fontana, Calif.; his mother, Ardella Anderberg, of Mason City; a brother, Jim Anderberg and his wife, Jean, of Vienna, Maine; a sister, Vicki French, of Mason City; and three nephews, two nieces and a great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1977.

Nathan was born on April 21, 1909, at Fairview, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Gertrude Lucy (Nash) Northrup. He attended school in Stockton and then mechanics school. He was employed as a mechanic with Sedars Motor Company for 30 years, retiring about 1980.

On February 21, 1987, he was united in marriage to Gladys Foglesong at St. James Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed just about anything that dealt with cars including watching midget car racing and the Indy 500 races. He also enjoyed fishing for walleyes and northerns at Leech Lake, Minn., and Clear Lake. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.

Those thankful for sharing Nathan's life include his wife, Gladys, of Mason City; one brother, Glenn Northrup, of Rockford, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Martha; two sisters, Freida G. Northrup in infancy and Viola Boelk; and three brothers, Donald, Clarence and Ralph Northrup.

BRITT - The Rev. Theodore (Ted) Henderson, 70, of 515 Fifth Ave S.E., Britt, passed away because of a heart condition Tuesday (Oct. 26, 1999) at his home.

Ted was born on Oct. 18, 1929, in Livermore, the son of Theodore and Ruth (Kuebler) Henderson. He attended school in the LuVerne, Humboldt and Fort Dodge areas. He served in the Army/Air Force and began his career doing farm work after discharge from the military. He worked at Maytag from 1950 to 1959.

In 1958, he answered God's calling to pastor. He pastored Nazarene churches in Clarion, Climbing Hill, Britt and Knoxville, Iowa. He retired from the active ministry in 1994 and continued pastoral supply work in the Britt area.

On July 7, 1948, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Munson at Boone, Iowa. To this marriage was born one son, Dennis, and one daughter, Brenda.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Dennis Henderson and his wife, Marcia, of Clive; one daughter, Brenda Boomgarden and her husband, Mike, of Britt; grandchildren, Amanda Henderson of West Des Moines, Jason Boomgarden and his wife, Amy, of Britt, Alissa Henderson, Ankeny, and Misty Boomgarden of Britt; and one brother and two sisters.

John A. Wilke was born in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1939, the son of Lawrence G. "Larry" and Louise Gertrude (Weber) Wilke. He moved to Charles City with his family as a young man where he graduated from high school.

He moved to Chicago to attend college. After earning a nursing degree, he went to work for a neurosurgeon in private practice. He later joined the nursing staff of Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, Ill.

Eventually, he entered management and became a vice president at Lutheran General. He retired in January from Lutheran General Hospital after a 31-year career and then took a job as the business manager and pastoral liaison at St. Phillip the Apostle Church of Northfield.

In 1997, he was elected to serve on the Northfield Village Board, serving as chairman of the Public Works, Safety and Administration Committee.

MIDLAND, Texas - Earl Franklin Reitz, 79, of Midland, Texas, passed away Thursday (Oct. 28, 1999) at a local care facility.

Earl Franklin Reitz was born on April 7, 1920, in Red Oak, Iowa, to John and Hazel (Wright) Reitz. He served in the Army Air Force from 1939 to 1945 in both the Pacific and European Theaters. He was a staff sergeant aerial gunner on a B-17 in the 11th Air Force in the Aleutian Islands in 1942. After graduating from Bombardier Cadet School in Deming, N.M. in 1943, he was assigned as a second lieutenant on a B-24 Liberator stationed in Italy from 1943 to 1944.

He held the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon Battle Star and the European-African-Middle East Medal with three Battle Stars, the Air Medal with Four Clusters and Distinguished Unit Citation with one Cluster.

He married Violet Schlender in Forest City, Iowa, on June 8, 1947. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Clear Lake, Iowa, before moving his family to Tampa, Fla., where he obtained a bachelor's degree at the University of Tampa.

He then taught high school in Florida for many years, specializing in history and astronomy. He and his wife moved to Midland, Texas, in 1992 to be near family.

Mr. Reitz was preceded in death by his brothers, Wilbert Reitz, of Carroll, Iowa, and Arthur Reitz, of San Francisco.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Violet Reitz, of Midland, Texas; his son, Kenneth Reitz and his wife, Peggy, of Louisa, Va.; his daughter, Laurel Caputo and her husband, Joe, of Midland, Texas; his granddaughter, Jensen Reitz Montambault, of Washington, D.C.; his grandsons, James Caputo and his wife, Deidre, of Norman, Okla. and Thomas Caputo, of Lubbock, Texas; two sisters, Jean Lodwick, of Des Moines, Iowa and Edith McCue, of Villasca, Iowa; one brother, the Rev. Clinton L. Stevens was born May 11, 1914, in Mason City, the son of Arthur Garfield and Clara Mae (Hill) Stevens. He attended Mason City No. 7 Country School and Mason City High School. After his schooling, Clinton worked for farmers in the area until taking over the family farm.

On Sept. 26, 1937, Clinton was united in marriage with Ruth M. Allen at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua. He continued to farm and worked for several years as an oiler at the Sugar Beet Plant.

He attended the Salvation Army Adult Day Care Center for eight years prior to moving to the Manly Care Center. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and I.O.O.F.

He is survived by one son, Allen Stevens, of Mason City; daughter, Carol F. Mrs. Davis was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Kirksville, the daughter of Dr. George F. and Laura (Davis) Sneed. Lucille was raised in Kirksville, attended the Kirksville public schools and graduated from Kirksville High School with the class of 1938.

On Aug. 1, 1941, in Kirksville, she married Dr. Edward L. Chappell, who preceded her in death. She then married James Randoph Davis, who preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1988.

She attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (KSTC) and graduated with the class of 1942. After graduation, she moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, where she lived until 1967 when she returned to Kirksville. She was employed as a medical social worker for several years before her retirement.

She was a member of First Christian Church and had served on the Adair County Historical Society Board. She enjoyed collecting antiques, decorating her home and reading about history.

She is survived by one daughter, Laura Blackmon and her husband, Thomas, of Alamogordo, N.M.; one grandson, Christopher Blackmon and his wife, Tracy, of Glendale, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren, Cody Blackmon and Autumn Blackmon; and cousins, Dr. John R. Roderick and his wife, Ruth, of Kirksville, Jeannie Lucas and her husband, John, and sons, of Kirksville, and Betty Bohon and her husband, Dr. Rick and family, of Columbia, Mo.; and a stepdaughter, Mary Dean Young and David and family.

VIRGIL F. JOHNSTON

OSAGE - Virgil Francis Johnston, 73, of Osage, died Thursday (Oct. 28, 1999) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., due to a ruptured aneurysm.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Arthur L. Hill officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery with military rites by members of Osage American Legion Post 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, with the family present from 4 to 5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Monday at the church.

Virgil was born Oct. 16, 1926, in Forest City, the son of J.F. "Jack" and Alice (Severson) Johnston. He attended Forest City public schools, graduating in 1944. He was active in football, basketball, baseball and track.

Virgil enlisted in the Navy in June of 1944, serving aboard a Seventh Fleet tender in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was discharged in July of 1946 with the rating of fire controlman third class.

He enrolled at Waldorf College for one year. He then joined the Iowa State Highway Patrol in 1948. He served in the Iowa City and Osage areas until 1952. He entered the real estate, insurance and farm management business in 1952 in Osage.

Virgil was united in marriage to Antoinette Kathryn (Toni) Dybsjord on Oct. 1, 1949, in Waterloo.

Virgil served as president of the Iowa chapter of Farm and Land Brokers in 1963, was a past president of the Cedar Valley Board of Realtors and had served as a director of several committees, including the Legislative Committee of the Iowa Association of Realtors and as vice-president of the Iowa Association of Realtors in 1966. He served as director of the Iowa Chapter of Farm and Land Brokers and was chairman of the Legislative Committee of the Iowa Chapter for two years. He served as director and as vice president of the Osage Development Corporation, served on the Planning and Zoning Commission of the City of Osage, was director of the Business and Industry Committee of the North Iowa Development Commission and had served as vice-president of the Osage Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of the Rotary Club of Osage, American Legion, V.F.W., and Elks Club and was a past director of Sunny Brae Country Club. Virgil received the Outstanding Iowa Farm and Land Brokers Award in 1973 and was named Employer of the Year in Osage in 1985.

Virgil was an avid fisherman, enjoying "catch and release" fishing with friends in northern Canada. He also enjoyed golfing and all sports. He enjoyed traveling throughout Canada, the Far North, South Pacific, Florida and California.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or to a memorial of the donor's choice.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Antoinette, of Osage; three sisters, Mildred Johnston of Waterloo, Alpha Sandage and her husband, Duane, of Ames, and Sylvia Kleen and her husband, Jim, of North Mankato, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Florence Johnston of Forest City and Shirley Johnston of Belmond; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.

FOREST CITY - Robert Eric Larson, 72, of Forest City, died Friday (Oct. 29, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Robert Eric Larson was born on May 24, 1927, in Ashland, Wis., the son of Oscar and Wendla Larson. At the age of 17, he joined the Navy and saw action in the South Pacific at the end of World War II, surviving the sinking of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Gambier Bay.

Eric held a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. His entire career was spent in education, first as a high school teacher and counselor in various Minnesota schools; then as a college teacher in Winona, Minn., and Sante Fe, N.M.; and finally as a special education director and psychologist for several schools in the Austin, Minn., area. The couple moved to Forest City in the fall of 1973.

Eric was an avid hunter and outdoorsman all his life. He also was actively involved in scouting in Forest City for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie, of Forest City; a son, Craig, of Trinidad, Colo.; a daughter, Kristin Stanley and her husband, Lester, and two grandchildren, Eric and Brooke, all of Eden Prairie, Minn.; a brother, Charles, and a sister, Dorothy Bagger, both of Ashland, Wis.; and two sisters, Ethel Kippa and Ruth Sheveland, both of Oshkosh, Wis.

BERNICE VIOLA THORNBERG

BRAHAM, Minn. - Bernice Viola Thornberg, 86, of Braham, Minn., died Thursday (Oct. 28, 1999) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Braham Evangelical Covenant Church, Braham, with the Rev. Dick Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Old North Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Rock-Mankie Funeral Home, 120 S. Broadway, Braham.

Bernice Johnson was born on Nov. 5, 1912, in Constance, Minn., the daughter of Sam R. and Huldah Johnson. She attended school in Braham.

On Oct. 26, 1940, she married her high school sweetheart, J. Edward Thornberg. They resided in Braham before moving to Minneapolis in the late 1940s.

In 1965 the family, which then consisted of Bernice, Ed, a son, Steven, and a daughter, Susan, moved to Clear Lake. Bernice was active in the Clear Lake Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She was the chief, cook and bottle washer behind the FunStuf Dairy Bar, which the Thornbergs ran between 1971 and 1974.

In 1975, the Thornbergs moved back to Minneapolis. In 1979 they returned to Clear Lake where they lived until 1986. They then attended and were active in the Evangelical Free Church of Clear Lake.

Bernice loved to entertain and will be remembered for her homemade breads. She also loved to play Scrabble with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Ed Thornberg, of Braham; two sons, James Thornberg of Bloomington, Minn., and Steven Thornberg of Hinckley, Minn.; two daughters, Marlys Jordan of Braham and Susan Hutchison of Mason City; one sister, Evelyn Bloom, of Golden Valley, Minn.; and one brother, Wallace Johnson, of Florida. She also is survived by her 13 loving grandchildren, Scott, Kimberly, Janeen, Jeremy and Daniel Meyer, John, Eric and Jason Thornberg, Dustin, Melissa, Karina and Jennifer Hutchison and Heather Thornberg, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Roy, Lloyd and Maurice Johnson.

MASON CITY - Herbert Quick Webner, 79, of 503 South Van Buren, died Saturday (Oct. 30, 1999) at Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., with the Rev. Joel Dahlen of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hogan Bremer Chapel, and will continue until service time on Tuesday.

Herbert Quick Webner, the son of Daniel and Alice (Quick) Webner, was born Oct. 9, 1920, on a farm east of Klemme. After attending rural school in Ell Township, he worked as a farm laborer until entering the service in September 1942. He served 24 months as a hospital orderly at Truax Field, Madison, Wis. From there he was sent to the European Theatre where he spent the remainder of his service with the Black Cat Division of the 24th Tank Battalion. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 23, 1945 at Camp Beale, Calif.

On Sept. 20, 1942, he married Amy Nelson at the Methodist Church in Wesley. After his discharge he returned to farm work. Later he took a job with Central States Electric Company, where he began his career as a lineman. He then moved to Mason City, where he worked for Peoples Gas and Electric, later Interstate Power Company, until his retirement in 1982.

NORTHWOOD - Doris Faye Fewins, 79, Northwood, died Saturday (Oct. 30, 1999) at Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood,

Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood with the Rev. Paul L. Holmer and the Rev. Allan J. Stoa as officiants. Private family inurnment will be in the Kensett Cemetery. According to her wishes, her body was cremated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Doris Faye Fewins memorial fund in her memory.

There will be no visitation, however, the family will greet friends in the fellowship hall at the church following the services.

Doris Faye (Knutson) Fewins was born on April 15, 1920, in Kensett, the daughter of John and Louisa (Plath) Knutson. She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran faith and taught Sunday school for many years, first at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett and at First Lutheran Church in Northwood. She attended and received her education in the Kensett School System, graduating from Kensett High School in 1938. After graduation, she attended cosmetology classes and owned and operated a beauty shop in Manly for a number of years. Doris was very active in her church and was a member of the Abigail Circle and was on the Evangelism Committee, as well as several other church related clubs. Until the time of her death, she remained a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, and had been a resident of the Lutheran Retirement Home since 1995.

In 1946, she was united in marriage to Oscar Frank Fewins and resided on a farm southwest of Northwood. To this union was born one son, Oscar Frank Fewins, Jr., on July 13, 1949. Upon the dissolution of her marriage, Doris moved to Northwood and was employed for many years with Doctors Forland and Anderson at the Veterinary Clinic in Northwood. She went on to work for Interstate Power Company of Dubuque located in Northwood until her retirement in 1986. She enjoyed watching Hawkeye basketball games and was a loyal Northwood-Kensett High School basketball and football fan. She was a regular volunteer for the American Cancer Society, served on the board of the Viking Manor in Northwood, Entre-Nous study club, and other community based organizations.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Oscar Frank Fewins, Jr. and his wife Wanda, of Mason City; three grandchildren, Amanda, Ashley, and Anna Fewins, all of Mason City; nephews, Richard Hrubetz of Joice, Loren Hrubetz, Lake Mills, and Ron Hrubetz of Joice; one niece, Kathy Gallaher, Joice; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; John and Louisa Knutson; one sister, Lucille J. Hrubetz; and one nephew, David Hrubetz.

Natalie Anne VerSteegh was born Nov. 28, 1927, in Aplington, the daughter of Walter and Henrietta (DeBeck) Popkes. She grew up in Aplington and graduated from Aplington High School and St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Marshalltown.

On May 11, 1951, she was married to Harold G. VerSteegh, in Aplington. She and her husband owned Floyds Auto Electric in Clear Lake for many years where she was bookkeeper and secretary. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, traveling and especially loved cats. She was a member of Clear Lake First Congregational Church and an active member of VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by one cousin, Audrey Crawshaw and her husband, Ed, Rochester, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband on June 23, 1990.

James Robert Murray was born June 15, 1924, in Buffalo Township, Winnebago County. He was the son of John Earl and Alice Murray. James attended Buffalo Center Community School and graduated in 1941. He was a proud veteran of World War II serving in the European Theatre as an infantry soldier. He continued his active involvement in the local Legion chapter throughout his life in the community.

On Sept. 26, 1954, he was married to Eleanor Anonson at Bethany Lutheran Church, Joice. James and Eleanor raised two children, Mary Coleen Chapman and James Timothy Murray. He raised Black Aberdeen Angus Cattle on the family farm all of his life. He found immense joy in watching his black cows and their newborn calves standing knee deep in the grass of a Spring pasture.

We will always remember the things that you loved; thanks for sharing them with us, and soon enough we will all be walking in the tall Spring grass forever with you...Your loving family and friends.

Survivors include his loving wife, Eleanor; his daughter, Mary Coleen Chapman and husband, Richard; his son, James Timothy Murray and wife, Janice, Cambridge, Wis.; one granddaughter, Ashley Marie, Rochester, Minn.; one brother, Charles Murray and wife, Carol, Fairbanks; two sisters, Margret Moening of West Des Moines and Helen Kelso and husband, John, Lake Mills; and one sister-in-law, Beverly Mathison, Fairmount, Minn. James enjoyed a large group of nephews from his brothers and sisters.

Ila Jean Oudekerk was born March 31, 1927, in Forest City, the daughter of Frank B. and Hazel D. (Petersen) Holcomb. She attended the Forest City Schools. She married Gordon Oudekerk on October 23, 1953 in Nashua. She worked as a homemaker. She enjoyed going to garage sales, stock car racing, writing letters, traveling, and collecting coffee cups and knick-knacks. Ila was the best popcorn maker in the world. She regularly attended Bennezette Wesleyan Church in rural Aredale.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon Oudekerk, rural Dougherty; two sons, Randy Oudekerk and his friend, Diane Barnes, and Rickey Dean Oudekerk and his wife, Barb, all of Hampton; one daughter, Bonnie Jean Jung, Dumont; three sisters, Geneva Merchant, Fern Johnson, and Myrna Oudekerk, all of Forest City; one grandson, Rickey Jung Jr., Hampton; three step grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and various nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; one sister; two brothers and one daughter-in-law.
