FORREST F. RODE

TITONKA - Forrest F. Rode, 79, died Wednesday (June 30, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Titonka, with the Rev. Virtus Stofferegen officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


EVELYN P. LOSEE

MASON CITY - Evelyn P. Losee, 74, of 929 16th St. N.E., died Tuesday (June 29, 1999) at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Arne C. Bergland officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

There will be no visitation, her body was cremated at Major-Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

The family suggests memorials to the Evelyn P. Losee Memorial Fund.

Evelyn P. Losee was born March 20, 1925, the daughter of Edward and Amelia (Lippert) Bartels in Ute. Evelyn attended school in Graettinger, and she then moved with her family to Charles City. Evelyn married Earl Losee in Charles City. They lived in Sheffield, Algona and Rockwell. Evelyn also helped her husband run the locker in Rockwell. She then worked as a unit secretary at North Iowa Mercy Health Center for 18 years, retiring in 1995. Earl and Evelyn moved to Mason City in 1991. Evelyn enjoyed gardening and flowers and traveling to see her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed collecting Precious Moments. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Earl R. Losee, Mason City; three daughters, Carolyn Uhlenhake, Urbandale, Diane Fortsch, Weatherford, Texas, and Tamara Petermeier and husband, Mark, Weatherford, Texas; two sons, Earl Dean Losee and wife, Cindy, Nixa, Mo., and Michael Losee of Mason City; 12 grandchildren, Trent, Travis, Tracy, Corey, Peter, Molly, Toby, Sarah, Brian, Austin, Tyler and Joshua; five great-grandchildren, Shayna, Spencer, Chelsea, Jenna and Hanna; two sisters, Alice Ogle and husband, Lloyd, of Evansdale, and Pauline Shave of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marilyn; a son in infancy, Roger; a granddaughter, Katie; and a brother, Edgar.


DONALD R. BAKER

MITCHELL, S.D. - Donald R. Baker, 61, died Tuesday (June 29, 1999) in Sioux City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at North Ridge Baptist Church, Mitchell, S.D. Will Funeral Home in Mitchell is in charge of arrangements.

Donald R. Baker was born Feb. 6, 1938, at Fort Dodge, the son of Cecil R. "Red" and Velma P. "Babe" (Umsted) Baker. He attended and graduated from LuVerne High School in 1956. He graduated from Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, in 1960. Don served in the United States Army for two years. He resided in Mitchell, S.D., for the past 25 years, where he owned the Don Baker Insurance Agency.

Survivors include his wife, Cathie Baker, of Mitchell, S.D.; daughters, Diane Shanafelt and husband, Charlie, and their four children, of Sioux City, Donna Haines and her three children of Sioux City, and Jennifer Koehler and husband, Fred, and their two children of Rapid City, S.D.; a son, Brad Baker, of Minneapolis; his mother, Babe Baker, of Mason City; a sister, Karen Bird and husband, Jim, of Mason City; a brother, Mick Baker and wife, Sally, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Red Baker, on May 24, 1994.

RAYMOND W. "RAY" HEIT

CHARLES CITY - Raymond W. "Ray" Heit, 87, of Charles City, and formerly of New Hampton, died Tuesday (June 29, 1999) at the Ninth St. Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m., and a parish vigil wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

ALMA (BROOKS) RECTOR

NORTHWOOD - Alma (Brooks) Rector, 101, died Wednesday (June 30, 1999) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.

Memorial services and a celebration of her life will be at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Zion Baptist Cemetery in Sparta, N.C., beside her husband. According to her wishes, her body was cremated.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. S., Northwood, is in charge of arrangements.

Alma (Brooks) Rector was born on June 7, 1898, in Alleghany County in Sparta, N.C., the daughter of John and Columbia Eldora (Brooks) Eustis. She attended and received her education in the Glade Valley (N.C.) High School. She was united in marriage to Charles Martin Rector on Dec. 27, 1915, in Alleghany County, N.C. He preceded her in death in 1941. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Odebolt, where her husband worked at the Adams Ranch and she was a housewife. In 1958, she moved to the Bay area in California, where she furthered her education and obtained her L.P.N. license and worked as a Resident Grandma, Companion Nurse, and later as a house sitter for people in the area. She had been a resident of the Bay area for 40 years, until moving to Northwood, living with her daughter, Marybelle Block and her husband, Ken.

She enjoyed reading, writing and traveling, but her great love and enjoyment was her family.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Concord, Calif., Order of the Eastern Star in Odebolt, and Concord, Calif., Order of Amaranth, and was very active in other church and civic organizations. She also attended the Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, and First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Left to cherish her memory are four daughters, Sue Heathman and her husband, Phayne, of Humboldt, Brooks Rector of Waterloo, Marybelle Block and her husband, Ken, of Northwood, and Nancy Bushnell and her husband, Jack, of Concord, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Rector, of Loveland, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband Charles, her parents, one son, Frederick Rector, one grandson, Kent Rector, two brothers and two sisters also preceded her in death.

ELIZABETH HANSON

CLEAR LAKE - Elizabeth Hanson, 93, died Tuesday (June 29, 1999) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Ronald Stein officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Library, Clear Lake, or the Thornton Public Library.

Elizabeth Dull Hanson was born at Alexander, on May 10, 1906, to William and Ida (Holman) Dull. She moved to Mason City as a young girl and attended public school there. Beth was united in marriage to Lester Hanson in 1924. They lived in Clear Lake for several years before moving to Ventura. Beth returned to Clear Lake in 1981 to live in the Lakeland Apartments. She moved to Oakwood Care Center in September 1996.

Beth was raised in the Baptist Church in Mason City. She was a member of the ODO Club and the Rebeka Lodge. Beth was an avid reader, loved cats and traveling, enjoyed fishing and gardening, was an excellent cook, and was happiest when all her "kids" came home for family gatherings.

She is survived by six children, Wendell "Hook" Hanson, Odessa, Texas, Bonnie Hanson, Clarksville, Ga., Betty Blick, Sultan, Wash., Jo Ellen Carpenter, Clear Lake, Joyce Stille, Swaledale and Larry Hanson, Mazatlan, Mexico; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, two sisters, her husband, one son, David, and one granddaughter.

FOREST CITY - Donald D. Dontje, 69, died Wednesday (June 30, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, Mason City.

VIOLET L. BRONES

FOREST CITY - Funeral services for Violet L. Brones, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Violet L. Brones was born in Forest City on Nov. 9, 1916, the daughter of Jared and Hazel (Harris) Nesset. She received her education in Forest City schools and attended Waldorf Academy.

She married James Brones at the United Methodist Church in Forest City on Jan. 12, 1945. The couple has made their home in Forest City their entire married lives. Violet worked for several years at Fleetguard in Lake Mills. She also worked for North Central Human Services and for Winnebago Industries. She was a charter member of the Rainbow Trail Riders and active for over 50 years in that organization. She enjoyed horses and attended horse shows with her husband. Violet was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City, where she was involved with Ladies Aid and Circle. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her family remembers her delicious sugar cookies and her bread making. She enjoyed sewing and quilting.

Violet entered the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City in January 1998. She died there on June 30, 1999, at the age of 82 years.

She is survived by her husband, James Brones, of Forest City; her three children, Layne Brones and his wife, Meredith, of Cedar Edge, Colo., JoAnn Fiske of Forest City, and Jon Brones of Melbourne; a brother, Jared Nesset and wife, Margy, of Las Vegas, N.M.; a sister, Geraldine Sweeney and husband, Orva, of Forsyth, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant sister, Vida.

HARRY M. ANDERSON

MASON CITY - Harry M. Anderson, 78, of 1826 Cerro Gordo Way, passed away Thursday (July 1, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 3, at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Gary L. Johnson, Chaplain at Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Brush Point Cemetery, Fertile.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 today at the funeral home.

The family requests memorials be sent to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Harry M. Anderson.

Harry was born Oct. 10, 1920, at Fertile, the son of Henry and Marie (Nilson) Anderson. He attended schools and graduated in Hanlontown.

Harry farmed and worked at Armor for many years. On Sept. 1, 1978, he married Berniece C. Scott at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in rural Hanlontown, where Harry continued to farm.

He enjoyed flower gardening and raising vegetables for his family. Harry and Berniece moved to Mason City in 1997 due to poor health.

Harry will be sadly missed by his wife, Berniece, Mason City; his stepchildren, Dennis Scott and his wife, Judy, Mason City, Cheryl Barkema and her husband, Don, Meservey, and Danny Scott and his wife, Rojean, Mapleton; one sister, Martha Meyers, Clear Lake; one sister-in-law, Lois Anderson; 11 step-grandchildren; 18 step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

DONALD DONTJE

FOREST CITY - Donald Dontje, 69, died Wednesday (June 30, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Albert Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

There will be no visitation. Funeral arrangements were completed by Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City - (515) 582-2685.

AGNES TOLLAGSON

THOMPSON - Funeral services for Agnes Tollagson, 77, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Marilyn Peters officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, Thompson, and will resume one hour before the service at the church Saturday.

Agnes Katherine Tollagson, daughter of Ed and Minnie Stalheim, was born Dec. 28, 1921. She attended school in Scarville and graduated from Scarville High School.

On Feb. 28, 1942, Agnes was united in marriage to Melvin Tollagson in Thompson. Agnes loved working with friends and always lent a helping hand and always found time to spend with all her grandchildren. She also spent a great deal of time with her flowers and her garden. Agnes liked to cook and everyone loved her cooking.

She worked at several places including Miller Locker, Korleskis and Woden Locker. She continued working until her health forced her to retire. She resided at the Lake Mills Care Center and later transferred to the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Agnes passed away at the Good Samaritan Center on Thursday (July 1, 1999).

Agnes is survived by her husband, Melvin, of Thompson; her daughters, Sharon Vrieze of Moore, S. C., and Phyllis Hauan of Thompson; her son, Wayne and his wife, Jeanne Tollagson, of Crystal Lake; nine grandchildren, Teresa Brunsvold, Troy Fleenor, Melissa, Lori and Travis Tollagson, Jeffrey, Timothy, Cyndy and Sheri Vrieze; four great-grandchildren, Halley, Blake, Derrick and Brett; two sisters, Norma and her husband, LaVerne Jorgen, and Hazel Peterson; two brothers, Arnold Stalheim and Kenney and his wife, Freda Stalheim; and many nieces and nephews.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Esther Thorson; a sister-in-law, Virgie Stalheim; two brothers-in-law, Earl Thorson and Gilbert Peterson; and a son-in-law, Ken Vrieze.

JAMES "JIM" PERRIN

OSAGE - James "Jim" Perrin, 52, of Des Moines, formerly of Osage, died Wednesday (June 30, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Jim was born Aug. 18, 1946, in Osage, the son of Harold and Kathryn (Mapes) Perrin. He attended schools in Osage and graduated from Osage High School in 1964.

During high school Jim worked at the Sunny Brae Golf and Country Club, Osage, assisting his father as grounds keeper. Jim later worked for Hartwig Construction and L.R. Falk Construction, both in Osage.

Jim did live in Mason City for a period of time, and he worked at YWCA, the YMCA and at General Foods. In 1991 Jim moved to Des Moines and started working at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, where he had been working up until May 24, 1999, when he became ill. When he started working at Iowa Methodist he was a parking lot attendant, and for the past three years he has been a transporter for the hospital.

Jim enjoyed the outdoors and going for long walks. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and working crossword puzzle books.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 3, at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating. Burial will be in the Orchard Cemetery, Orchard.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

James is survived by one sister, Mary Morris, Mason City; two brothers, Richard Perrin and his wife, Mary, Osage, and Ben Perrin and his wife, Donna, Burleson, Texas; an aunt, Lucille Boekemeir and her husband, Don, Rockford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gene Perrin, on Feb. 15, 1999; two nieces, Stacy and Michelle Perrin; a nephew, Paul Perrin; and one brother-in-law, Phil Morris.

ROCKFORD - Francis L. Schweizer, 78, of 15 Sixth St., died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.

LAKE MILLS - Leon Leroy Brunswold, 96, of Lake Mills, formerly of Walker, Minn., died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Hancock, Minn.

There will be no visitation. Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

BURT - Nora Garner, 101, died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Algona.

ROCKFORD - Francis Schweizer, 78, of Rockford, died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rudd United Methodist Church, Rudd, with the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

DUANE F. SICKLES

READLYN - Duane F. Sickles, 60, died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Readlyn, with the Rev. Alfred Kruse officiating. Burial will be in the St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Readlyn, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

RICHARD W. SULLIVAN

PLATTSBURG, Mo. - Richard W. Sullivan, 65, died Friday (July 2, 1999) at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo., after a lengthy illness.

The funeral ceremony will be held Tuesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Plattsburg, Mo. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Plattsburg. The Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Sullivan was born Dec. 8, 1933, in Mexico, Mo., to John and Ada Sullivan. He graduated from St. Brendan High School, Mexico, in 1952, and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

During the Korean conflict, he served as a Korean translator in Japan and Korea. He was a graduate of the National Security Agency Language School, Washington, D.C.

After his military service, Sullivan studied journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism and received a bachelor's degree in 1960. He met his wife, Carolyn Kincaid, at the university. They were married on Dec. 26, 1959.

Sullivan began his journalism career as a sportswriter for the Mason City Globe-Gazette in 1960. He was later appointed assistant sports editor. In 1967, Sullivan moved to the news staff of the Globe-Gazette, covering city and county government, as well as other areas. He was appointed city editor in 1974. Sullivan received several journalism awards during his career, including the Associated Press Managing Editor's Sweepstakes Award for news writing in 1970 and 1976. One award was for a story he wrote after posing as a volunteer patient in a psychiatric ward of a Mason City hospital. He also wrote a popular column called "I Don't Know, Too," for many years.

Sullivan retired from the Globe-Gazette in 1986, and he and his wife moved to her hometown of Plattsburg. In Plattsburg, Sullivan was active in the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus, serving as financial secretary for several years, and with the Plattsburg American Legion post. He also was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels. He was a member of the St. Ann's Church, Plattsburg.

Sullivan is survived by his wife; three sons, Steven of Des Moines, Rick of Chicago, and Michael of Los Angeles; one daughter, Sally of Mason City; two grandchildren, Jordon and Brittany, also of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Callie Sullivan of Portland, Ore.; an aunt, Margarite Sullivan of Mexico, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Donald; a sister, Betty Pearson; and his parents-in-law, Alvis and Carrie Kincaid, Plattsburg.

MASON CITY - Ruth B. Eppens, 73, of 1627 S. Wilson Ave., died Friday (July 2, 1999) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev Ron Stein officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Ruth B. Eppens was born Feb. 17, 1926, to John Bertram and Eva Marie (Overturf) Eppens. She attended Mason City schools.

On Sept. 27, 1947, Ruth married Charles Eppens in Mason City. Ruth worked for S.S. Kresge Variety Store and later for the NIACC food service.

Ruth was a member of First Baptist church. Ruth enjoyed her card club, playing marbles and her grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, John Eppens and his wife, Carolyn, Mason City, and Dale Eppens and his wife, Barb, Clear Lake; a sister, Esther Wheeler and her husband, Eugene, Mason City; five grandchildren, Ronni Rettig and her husband, Shawn, Craig Eppens and his wife, Jennifer, and Brian, Brenda and Katie Eppens; and four great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles in 1992; five brothers, Chuck, Don, Kenny, Clarence and Bud; and one sister, Geraldine.

MANLY - Marcille Heagel, 77, died Saturday (July 3, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, Mason City.

Her body was cremated. There will be no services held at this time.

CHARLES CITY - John W. Aird, 88, of 2625 210th St., died Saturday (July 3, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, with the Rev. Diane Christopher, senior pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens south of Charles City.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until the service time at the funeral home Tuesday.

SHIRLEY M. SHANNON


MASON CITY - Shirley M. Shannon, 70, of 1228 N. Adams Ave., died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory , 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Glen Bandel of Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory and will resume Tuesday until the time of the service.

Memorials may be directed to the Shirley M. Shannon Memorial Fund.

Shirley M. Shannon was born Oct. 31, 1928, the daughter of Burr and Ina (Hunsley) Jones in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1947.

She was united in marriage to John Shannon on Jan. 5, 1948, and to this union four children were born.

Shirley worked at the VFW Post No. 733 for 12 years and then for Marshall and Swift, retiring in 1990. After retirement she worked at Charlie Brown Daycare and the Discovery Shop.

She was a member of AARP and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Shirley enjoyed playing cards, her grandchildren and visiting friends. She will be sadly missed by her children and grandchildren for all the special things that she did for them throughout the years.

Shirley is survived by three daughters, Maureen "Reenie" Skellenger and her husband, Tom, Clear Lake, Tammy Carpenter and her husband, Raymond, Mason City, and Michele Shannon, Mason City; four grandsons, Mitch Skellenger and friend, Dawn Neff, Clear Lake, Shay Carpenter and Dillon Carpenter, Mason City, and Jordan Shannon, Mason City; one granddaughter, Jamie Carpenter, Mason City; and friend, Aaron Sheehan; two brothers, Doc Jones, Yucca Valley, Calif., and Robert Jones, Pamona, Calif.; special "grandson," Adam Kline, San Diego, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John Shannon in 1956; and a sister, Maxine Willcox.


 

GLADYS E. SEEFELD

MASON CITY - Gladys E. Seefeld, 84, of 1037 19th St. SW, died Thursday (July 1, 1999) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory and will continue on Tuesday until service time.

Gadys was born Oct. 31, 1914, at Iowa Falls, the daughter of Leon Wilbur and Netttie (Keller) Mulford. She graduated from Iowa Falls High School.

During World War II she lived in California and worked in the defense factory as a riveter. She moved to Mason City in 1954 and was employed at Penney's, Damon's, Park Clinic, United Home Bank and K-Mart, retiring in 1983.

Gladys enjoyed knitting, crafts, bingo and playing cards. After giving up her home, she moved to Willow Pointe for several months before entering the I.O.O.F. Home.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlene Jensen and her husband, James, Mason City; a son, Wilbur Whitman and his wife, Darlene, Bella Vista, Ark.; grandchildren, Pamela Rohrbacher and her husband, John, Minneapolis, David Jensen and his wife, Kathryn, Blaine, Minn., Jayne Worsfold, Marshalltown, Vicki Nelson and her husband, Max, Marshalltown, and Robert Whitman, Iowa City; great-grandchildren, Adam Rohrbacher, Minneapolis, Kyle Worsfold, Marshalltown, and Megan, Melissa, Melanie and Micheala Nelson, Marshalltown; a brother, Lloyd Mulford, Eagle Grove; two sisters, Violet Meyer, Ackley, and Lois Izer, Mason City; and a sister-in-law, Bess Mulford, Iowa Falls.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brothers, Milo and Ray Mulford; and sister, Irene Hoelscher.

DR. PERRY L. UHL

VERMILLION, S.D. -Dr. Perry L. Uhl, 61, died Friday (July 2, 1999) at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., from complications of cancer.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion, with burial at 5 p.m. in Amsterdam Township Cemetery at Kanawha.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at the church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral arrangements were completed by Hansen Funeral Home, Vermillion, S. D., (605) 624-2829.

Perry was born July 4, 1937, in Rodney, to Russell and Florence (Ferdig) Uhl. He graduated from the Smithland High School in 1955.

He married Janice Kraft on June 4, 1961, in Corwith. He received his bachelor of arts from Westmar College in LeMars in 1959 and his master of arts degree from Colorado State College in Greeley in 1963. He earned his doctor of philosophy from Iowa State University in Ames in 1988.

Perry was an Iowa educator for more than 28 years. He served as a teacher and coach in the school districts of Anthon-Oto (1959-60) and Corwith (1960-63). He was a principal in Roland (1963-66), before becoming Superintendent of Schools at Story City (1966-69), Roland-Story (1969-74), Estherville (1974-78), and Northwood-Kensett schools (1978-87). He was a graduate assistant at Iowa State University while working on his Ph.D. in 1987-88. For the past 11 years, he was a Professor of Educational Administration at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Dr. Uhl was active in many professional and community organizations. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was currently serving as a deacon. He just completed a five-year term on the South East South Dakota Activities Center (SESDAC) Board. He was a member of the South Dakota Beadle Club, and also belonged to the American Association of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, School Administrators of South Dakota, South Dakota School Superintendents' Association of Curriculum and Development Midwest Council of Education Administration, and National Staff Development Council. He was a 21-year member of the Iowa Association of School Administrators serving as president 1984-85. He was an active member of Chamber and Development Boards in each community he served as superintendent of schools. He also served on several church boards and had been a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his mother, Florence Ruchti, of Mapleton; his wife, Jan, of Vermillion; one son, David and his wife, JoEllen, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and one daughter, Deborah and her husband, Tim Reisner, of Minneapolis. He is also survived by one brother, Wilfred and his wife, Betty Uhl, of Smithland, and one sister, Norma and her husband, Duane Reed, of Atlantic. Also surviving him are six grandchildren, Taylor and Katelyn Uhl, and John, Zachary, Hannah and Noah Kraft.

He was preceded in death by his father, Russell; stepfather, Merle Ruchti; a brother, Ron; and his parents-in-law, Carl and Martha Kraft.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Dr. Perry L. Uhl Scholarship Fund at the University of South Dakota.

RICHARD W. SULLIVAN

PLATTSBURG, Mo. - Richard W. Sullivan, 65, died Friday (July 2, 1999) at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo., after a lengthy illness.

The funeral ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m.Tuesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Plattsburg, Mo. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Plattsburg. The Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Sullivan was born Dec. 8, 1933, in Mexico, Mo., to John and Ada Sullivan. He graduated from St. Brendan High School, Mexico, in 1952, and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

During the Korean conflict, he served as a Korean translator in Japan and Korea. He was a graduate of the National Security Agency Language School, Washington, D.C.

After his military service, Sullivan studied journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism and received a bachelor's degree in 1960. He met his wife, Carolyn Kincaid, at the university. They were married on Dec. 26, 1959.

Sullivan began his journalism career as a sportswriter for the Mason City Globe-Gazette in 1960. He was later appointed assistant sports editor. In 1967, Sullivan moved to the news staff of the Globe-Gazette, covering city and county government, as well as other areas. He was appointed city editor in 1974. Sullivan received several journalism awards during his career, including the Associated Press Managing Editor's Sweepstakes Award for news writing in 1970 and 1976. One award was for a story he wrote after posing as a volunteer patient in a psychiatric ward of a Mason City hospital. He also wrote a popular column called "I Don't Know, Too," for many years.

Sullivan retired from the Globe-Gazette in 1986, and he and his wife moved to her hometown of Plattsburg. In Plattsburg, Sullivan was active in the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus, serving as financial secretary for several years, and with the Plattsburg American Legion post. He also was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels. He was a member of the St. Ann's Church, Plattsburg.

Sullivan is survived by his wife; three sons, Steven, of Des Moines, Rick, of Chicago, and Michael, of Los Angeles; one daughter, Sally, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Jordon and Brittany, also of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Callie Sullivan, of Portland, Ore.; an aunt, Margarite Sullivan, of Mexico; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Donald; a sister, Betty Pearson; and his parents-in-law, Alvis and Carrie Kincaid, Plattsburg.

TROY, Ohio -Raymond Watterson Cheney, 84, died Sunday (July 4, 1999) at Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy, Ohio.

Raymond was born Sept. 13, 1914, in Greene, the son of William Harold and Grace (Watterson) Cheney.

He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in education. He retired from Troy High School in 1975 after 29 and a half years of teaching Industrial Arts. He was also a long-time wrestling coach at Troy High School.

Raymond was a master craftsman woodworker and a amateur wrestling champion. He was a member of the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church and a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara and Larry Buttermore of Westerville, Ohio; two sons, David and Peggy Cheney of Fort Worth, Texas, and Tom and Shanda Cheney of Gahanna, Ohio; a brother, Paul Cheney of Greene; two sisters, Ardis Sarchett of Ames and Audrey Wills of St. Mary's, Pa.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary (Probasco) Cheney in 1989, and a brother, Frank Cheney.

BRITT - George E. Drabek, 75, passed away Saturday (July 3, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery, Duncan. Military graveside services will be conducted by the VFW and American Legion Post of Britt.

Friends may greet the family after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Wenceslaus Catholic Church and one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday. A parish wake service will begin at 7 p.m. and a Catholic Workman rosary at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Ewing Funeral Chapel is in charge of all arrangements.

George, the son of James and Frances (Wellik) Drabek, was born at home in rural Duncan on Oct. 20, 1923. He went to country school in Garfield Township.

He worked with his dad and brothers for Drabek & Sons Construction for several years before serving in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Tekesta before being discharged in June of 1946. He then went back to work with his dad before going on to work for Curries Mfg. for 21 years until his retirement in 1985.

He was united in marriage with Edith Holck on Oct. 14, 1947, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Duncan. The couple resided in the Duncan area all their married life.

George was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, American Legion in Britt and the Catholic Workmen Branch No. 51 of Duncan. He enjoyed his retirement doing woodworking, being outside, playing his accordion and especially being with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Edith, and eight children, Rita and her husband, Terry Norstrud, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Joyce and her husband, Jerry Uhlenhake, of Orlando, Fla., Jeanette and her husband, Don Priebe, of Mason City, Dennis and his wife, Pat, of Garner, Vivian and her husband, Kenny Sankey, of Pensacola, Fla., Pauline Goll of Garner, Rosemary and her husband, Brent Weaver, of Garner, Denise and her husband, Rick Sankey, of Garner; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Marie Hejlik of Rockwell and Clara Malek and her husband, Ernie, of Britt; and three brothers, Jim and his wife, Vera, of Des Moines, Tom and his wife, Elaine, of Britt, and Bill of Madison, Wis.

George was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, James Jr.; two sisters, Rose Ward and Helen Townsend; and two brothers, Frank and Raymond Drabek.
