Tom J. Treloar, 83, of rural Clear Lake,
died Sunday June 30, 2013 at
the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City. A celebration of his life
will be held at a later time.

PATRICIA A. CAIN
Patricia Ann (Kudje) Cain, age 83, of
Harrison, Ark., formerly of Klemme,
Iowa, died, Jan. 3, 2013, at Harrison,
where she had lived since 1988.
A graveside service was held Tuesday,
July 2, 2013 at Ell Township Cemetery,
Klemme. Patricia was the daughter
of Arthur and Maybelle (Johnson) Kudje.
She attended Klemme Schools and
graduated from Klemme High School.
She later met the love of her life and
future husband, Kenneth Cain, of Clear
Lake, while on an outing at the Surf
Ballroom. The couple eloped in
April of 1949.
Following their union they moved to
Colorado, where Pat was employed with
Colorado State Bank as an operations
officer for 32 years until retirement in
Englewood, Colo., where she lived for 40
years before moving to Harrison, Ark.
Survivors include her daughter, Karrie
(Marcus) Limperis, Mt. Judea, Ark.;
granddaughter, Nicole (T.J.)
Clark; great-grandchildren, Kolby and
Chase Clark, and Roland Limperis;
step-great grandchild, Lydea Clark; her
sisters, Jacqueline Hiete and Virginia
Bakersville.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband, Kenneth; grandson,
Daniel Limperis; and great-grandson,
Corbin Clark.

Betty
Cathryn Johnson, 88 of Las Vegas,
Nevada, formerly of Clear Lake, IA
passed away on Monday, June 24, 2013.
Per her wishes, a graveside service will
be held at Noon on Monday, July 8 in the
Nevada Municipal Cemetery, Nevada IA
with Pastor Tom Poppe officiating.
Betty was born on April 5, 1925 in Ames
to Linville and Mable (Told) White.
Growing up in Nevada, she sang and
danced at various events in the area.
Betty was a member of the Central
Presbyterian Church and belonged to the
International Order of the Rainbow for
Girls. She graduated from Nevada High
School in 1943 and attended Iowa State
University where she was a Home
Economics major. Betty also taught dance
and was a member of the Chicago National
Association of Dancing Masters. She also
helped out at the family business, White
Jewelry Store. On April 27, 1947, Betty
married Wendell Johnson in Nevada IA. In
1950 they moved to Clear Lake where they
owned and operated Patterson Jewelry.
While in Clear Lake, they were members
of the First Congregational Church. In
1984, she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to
be near her children. In the late 80's,
Betty worked part-time at a store called
West of Dallas. She loved doing crafts,
reading, going to Antique and thrift
shops. An avid quilter, Betty belonged
to the Desert Quilters of Nevada, quilt
circles Scarlet Bonnets (where she was
called "Queen Mum"), Bluebirds and every
other Monday Night Quilters. Along with
her daughters she was a member of the
Stephens College Alumnae Club of
Southern Nevada. Other organizations and
clubs she belonged to were the Order of
Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi Society,
T.T.T. and Progress Club.
Betty is survived by her children Martha
Gennarelli, Wendell Johnson, Mary (Ken)
Coxson-Jones; three grandchildren
Carissa Coxson, Chandler Coxson, and
Camden Coxson; a great grandson Grayson
Coxson, all of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister
Sandra (Bob) Leeper of Nevada, IA;
brother Jim (MaryAnn) White of Tucson,
AZ; sister-in-law Lavon Tjelmeland of
McCallsburg; and many nieces and nephews
along with their families.
Betty was preceded in death by her
parents, husband Wendell, in-laws
Kenneth and Beulah Johnson, and
son-in-law Tony Gennarelli.

Thursday, July 4, 2013, at Mercy Medical
Center - North Iowa in Mason City, IA.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m.
on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Central
Presbyterian Church, 3829 Grand Avenue
(at 39th Street), Des Moines, with the
Rev. Dr. James L. Wallace officiating. A
private family inurnment will be held at
a later date at Resthaven Cemetery in

Janice Mary Onthank was born June 14,
1935, in Des Moines, the daughter of
George W. and Dorothy F. (Smith)
Onthank. Jeannie graduated from
Roosevelt High School in Des Moines and
continued her education at Drake
University. She was a member of Kappa
Alpha Theta sorority and graduated in
1957 with her B.A. degree in education.
She taught 3rd grade at Wallace
Elementary School in Des Moines for a
short time.
On April 15, 1960, Jeannie married
Robert Snyder at Central Presbyterian
Church.
The couple spent summers at their lake
home in Clear Lake, and in 2012, moved
there permanently. Clear Lake had been
part of her life since age 7. She was an
avid sailor and enjoyed all lake
activities with her many dear friends.
She loved playing bridge and also
enjoyed golf, music and theatre. Over
the years, aside from being a homemaker,
Jeannie was heavily involved with
Hospice of Central Iowa, her true
passion. Her many roles included
volunteer, secretary, enthusiastic
fundraiser, foundation board member, and
president of the operating board.
Jeannie is survived by her husband of 53
years, Robert Snyder, her three sons:
Steven Snyder and wife Louise Cragg of
Mason City; Reed Snyder and fiancée
Jennifer Montilino of Minneapolis, MN;
and Andrew Snyder and partner Jeff
Staebell of Des Moines. She was a loving
grandmother to her four grandchildren:
William Snyder, Daniel Snyder, Kate
Snyder and Gabrielle Snyder. She is also
survived by her sister Dorie Fisher and
husband David of West Des Moines, as
well as many nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by her parents.
Jeannie was a great friend. All who knew
her were enriched by her caring and
generous spirit. A beautiful light has
gone out - its warm glow will remain in
the hearts of many forever.

Beverly J. Anderson was born July 24,
1932, in Garner, the daughter of Birch
and Barbara Robison. She graduated from
Garner High School, and later worked at
a nursing home, drug store, and grocery
store. She was united in marriage to
Calvin T. Anderson on December 12, 1950
at the Garner Methodist Church; to this
union six children were born.
Beverly was active with her church
circle, an auxillary member of the
American Legion #256 in Garner, IA,
enjoyed spending time with family, and
baking. She also enjoyed listening to
Twins baseball, and Hawkeye basketball
on the radio, as well as attending her
grandchildren’s activities.

Per Earl’s wishes, cremation rites have

Street, Clear Lake with the Reverend

Earl L. Kotz, son of Louis and Tilda
Ashland Kotz was born April 6, 1918 in
Clear Lake, Iowa. He was baptized and
confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church and
attended school in Clear Lake. Earl was
drafted into the United States Army in
September of 1943. Shortly thereafter,
he was united in marriage to Dolores
Meyer on June 3, 1944 in Texas. Earl
served in World War II before being
honorably discharged in March of 1946.
Earl and Dolores made their home in
Mason City for many years before moving
to Clear Lake in 1995. He owned and
operated the Mason City Hatchery,
raising chickens and turkeys along with
being involved in daily farm operations
raising grain, cattle, and hogs. Earl
was a dedicated agriculturalist and
never officially retired, as he helped
his boys with farming.
Earl was an avid outdoorsman. He took
many fishing trips to Canada and Iowa
trout fishing. He loved hunting; one
unforgettable hunt was his five roosters
with five shots with his son and
brother-in law. Earl pioneered water
skiing kite flying in the Clear Lake
area. Golfing, snowskiing, and taking
his Cris-Craft out on the water were
also favorite past-times. Earl also
enjoyed world travel seeing many
different countries over the years.
He was involved with Clear Lake Yacht
Club for several years serving as a
judge and was a member of the Mason City
Country Club. Earl was very active in
the churches, serving on the Trinity
Lutheran Church Board of Trustees in
Mason City in past years and was a
member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear
Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 69
wonderful years, Dolores Kotz, Clear
Lake; three children, Dennis (Tanya)
Kotz and Randy (Dianne) Kotz, both of
Clear Lake and Krismar Kotz, Mason City;
three grandchildren, Ashley (Jason)
Stokke, Clear Lake, Nathan Kotz,
Minneapolis, MN, and Colette Kotz, Clear
Lake; one great-grandson, Ayden Stokke,
Clear Lake; brother, Edward Kotz,
Grinnell, IA; sister, Doris Creager,

Josephine N. Ellefson, daughter of
Domenic and Spenalba Ciarma Nardicchio
was born April 10, 1922 in Mason City,
Iowa. She received her education at
McKinley and Lincoln elementary before
graduating from Mason City High School.
She was united in marriage to Vernon V.
Ellefson Sr. on October 21, 1942 in
Clear Lake and to this union, four
children were born: Vernon Jr., Lucinda,
Errol, and Kathy.
The family resided in Clear Lake all of
their life while Josephine worked at the
Clear Lake Bakery in retail for over 25
years before retiring in 1982.
Pip’s baking was one of a kind. Some of
her other passions includes crocheting,
cooking, sewing, and crafts.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church in Clear Lake.
Pip’s family would like to extend their
appreciation to the Staff of North Iowa
Hospice for their wonderful care they
provided Pip.

Kathryn Zirbel, daughter of Chauncey and
Alice Eyestone Merwin was born November
15, 1918 in Bryan, Texas. When Kit was a
child, the family lived in Texas before
moving to Des Moines in 1931. In 1933,
the family moved to Clear Lake where she
graduated from high school in 1937.
Kit was united in marriage to Stanley
Zirbel in Clear Lake on July 13, 1943.
Following their marriage, the family
resided on a farm south of Fertile where
they lived for over 60 years. She was a
homemaker all of her life, took care of
her children, helped Stan on the farm,
delivered milk for the Fertile Coop and
worked for the Iowa State D.H.I.A.
Kit loved to socialize with people and
her family. She enjoyed listening to
music and sewing.
She was a devoted member of the Clear
Lake Christian Church for many years.
She will be missed by her daughters,
Janice (Fred) Hare, Fertile, IA, Karen
(Jim) Weld, Clarion, IA, Amy (Keith) Van
Note, Minneapolis, MN, Jill Murray,

Lake, Iowa died Sunday night June 30,
2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit of North Iowa, Mason
City, Iowa.
According to his wishes he was cremated
and a time of gathering and sharing of
memories and celebrating his life will
be from 12:00p.m.-2:00p.m. Saturday July
20, 2013 at the Ventura Community
Center.
Tom was born January 28, 1930 on the
family farm Rudd, Iowa the son of Elmer
and Wilma (Kiley) Treloar. He moved with
his family at the age of four to the
family farm northwest of Clear Lake. He
attended rural school and then attended
and graduated from Ventura High School
in 1948. He was proud to be a member of
the first Ventura Football team in his
junior year and senior year.
After high school he farmed until he was
drafted into the Army in 1952. He served
for two years was stationed in Germany
until he was honorably discharge in 1954
and then came back to the family farm.
He met his future wife Charlotte Fiero
of Garner that spring and he quickly
caught onto her nick-name “Pat”. They
were married at the United Presbyterian
Church in Garner, Iowa on Feb. 18, 1954.
They became proud parents of five
children.
Tom was former member of Ventura School
Board; served on Clear Lake Township
drainage ditch board for several years
and was a member of First Congregational
Church, Clear Lake and Clear Lake V.F.W.
Tom is survived by his wife of 58 years,
Pat Treloar, Clear Lake, Iowa; his
children, Sue Roenfanz, Beth (Boomer)
Burley, Katie (Rich) Lightbody, Tim
(Dawn) Treloar and Tony (Cam) Treloar;
grandchildren Isaac Lightbody, Shane
(Kelli) Roenfanz, Abby Roenfanz, Seth

Harlan Allan was born on April 22, 1922,
at Radcliffe, Iowa, the son of Hedley
Oscar and Esther Alvida (Johnson)
Stenberg. He graduated from Radcliffe
High School in 1940 and attended John
Fletcher College until he was drafted in
1943. He served his country as a
chaplain’s assistant with the rank of
sergeant in the Army Air Corps and was
honorably discharged in 1946 in Panama,
Balboa Air Force Base. He then attended
Luther College graduating with a B.A.
degree in 1949. He attended Evangelical
Theological Seminary in Naperville,
Ill., graduating in 1953, while also
serving a church in Wilton.
During his time at Luther College,
Harlan enjoyed his first date with Jean
roller skating and two years later on
August 22, 1948, he was united in
marriage to Miss Hills at the First
Baptist Church in Cedar Falls.
Harlan went through several mergers in
church conferences starting with the
Evangelical, which merged with the
United Brethren to become the
Evangelical United Brethren, which later
became the United Methodist Church.
For 44 years he and his wife Jean served
in the Iowa United Methodist Conference
serving in Cresco and Mt. Zion, Wilton,
Ross, Van Horne/Blairstown, Mason City,
Kanawha, and Lake Mills/Thompson. In
1988 he retired the first time, moving
to Hazelton where he served as a retired
pastor.
In 1991 he and Jean moved to Clear Lake,
retiring for the second time. After a
couple of years of retirement, Harlan
accepted the invitation of the
congregation of the Congregational
United Church of Christ in Britt to
serve as a supply pastor for two years.
He was a very principled man of honor
and would stand his ground when he was
right. One of his favorite things was
visiting with people in his creative and
compassionate manner, which are
excellent attributes for a minister. He
excelled at making people smile and
making the Good News of God’s love and
redemption understandable and
approachable to all. He enjoyed
traveling, bird watching, photography
and fishing with his family. Harlan took
great pleasure in driving and especially
loved the challenge of maneuvering
through a blizzard safely.
Harlan and Jean shared a passion for the
theater and musical events. He learned
to play the tuba and the double bell
euphonium.
Harlan was a member of the VFW, Sons of
Norway, the Danish Brotherhood, and
played many years in the church softball
leagues. He was a member of the
ministerial associations in each
community he served and later sold
United Church Directories to many
different churches.
Harlan is survived by his loving wife of
64 years Jean, two children Karen
Stenberg, Mason City, Andrew and his
wife Sue of Tulsa, Okla.; five
grandchildren John, Lori, Joni (Brian),
Phillip (Linzy), and Patti Stenberg,
three great grandchildren, John, Sean,
and Harlan, one niece, Sandy (Glenn)
Johnson and one nephew, David Maxfield.
His parents, one grandson, Stephen, two
sisters, Edith Jorgenson and Darlene
Maxfield, and one niece, Sue Mehlish,
preceded Harlan in death.

Kenneth was born April 18, 1928 on his
grandparent’s home in Meservey, IA. He
was the son of Clyde and Grace (Groen)
Smith. He attended country school and
then Ventura. He farmed all his life in
the Clear Lake area. Ken married Grace
Darlene Hansen September 25, 1955 at the
First Baptist Church, Mason City, IA.
They lived on the farm until September
2012. He loved playing cards, hunting,
fishing trips to Canada and driving
around in his pickup. Special to him was
spending time with his family.

(Tee) Bower, Des Moines, IA;

“Dick” Eugene Becker, 87, Clear Lake,
IA, died Sunday, July 21, 2013 at the
Oakwood Care Center, Hwy 18 W. Clear
Lake, IA.
A Celebration of Life will be held 12:30
PM Thursday, August 1, 2013 at the
Galilean Lutheran Church, 4454 255th
St., Clear Lake, IA with Rev. Scot
McCluskey officiating. Visitation with
family will be from 11:30 AM until the
time of service. According to his
wishes, his body has been cremated.
Inurnment will be at 3:00 PM, at
Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy 122 W.,
Mason City, IA. Military Honors will be
provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Memorials may be given to the Galilean
Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa
in his name.
Dick was born June 3, 1927 in Holtan,
KS, the son of Gustave and Clara Ann
(Hug) Becker. At an early age his family
moved to a farm near Thompson, IA. He
graduated from Thompson High School in
1945. Following school he enlisted in
the U.S. Navy and served during WWII.
After an Honorable Discharge from the
service he attended radio school in
Omaha and was a DJ in New Mexico for a
short time. He came back to Iowa and the
family farm, and attended Waldorf
College.
Dick married Marjorie Ann Wiuff on
November 26, 1955 at the Lutheran Church
in Rutland, IA. They lived on the family
farm for 25 years, moving to Clear Lake
in 1979. He worked at various positions
in Clear Lake including driving for the
Clear Lake School district for several
of those years. Dick loved riding his
motorcycle, all kinds of sports, both
watching his children and participating
himself. He enjoyed boating, the lake
and golfing.
He was a member of Galilean Lutheran
Church in Clear Lake, the Clear Lake
V.F.W. and former member of the Forest
City School Board.
Dick is survived by his two children
Debra Ann Wieland, Minneapolis, MN and
Thomas Lee (Kimberly) Becker,
Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren
Claire Elizabeth Becker and Grace Marie
Becker; sister Dorothy Kajer, Tama, IA
and several nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his
parents, wife Marjorie February 16,
2007, and brother-in-law Fred Kajer.

Inez Ione Cozad,
66, Clear Lake, formerly of Bedford,
Iowa, died Friday,
July 26, at the Oakwood Care Center in
Clear Lake.
A celebration of Inez’s life will be
held at a later date.
Inez Ione Cozad was born on May 20, 1947
in Hancock, Iowa, the
daughter of Archie Leland and Florence
Ida (Snyder) Mattly. Inez attended
school in Clarinda, Iowa, graduating
from Clarinda High School.
She also graduated from the school of
cosmetology in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She
was united in marriage to Richard Cozad
in 1972, and to this marriage two
children were born, Richie and Corbie
Ann Cozad. Richard preceded her in
death. The family resided in Bedford
where she worked as a cosmetologist
until 1989, when she became an EMT in
Bedford. She continued in this
profession at Mercy Hospital in Corning,
Iowa, until 2005, when she had to retire
due to ill health.
Inez enjoyed painting pictures, being a
Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader,
knitting and crocheting.
Left to cherish her memory are her
children, Richie Cozad of Des
Moines, and Corbie Ann Cozad and fiancé,
Joe Kloster, of Clear Lake; her
brothers, Leroy (Lorena) Mattly of
Endicott, Wash., Dewey (Judy) Mattly of
Loveland, Colo., and Bob (Nancy) Mattly
of Omaha, Neb.; her sisters, Donna Cole
of Macedonia, Iowa, and Marylou (Kenny)
Gibbins of Shirley, Ark.; several
nieces, nephews, as well as other
relatives and friends.
Inez was preceded in death by her
parents, husband, and a nephew,
Adam Gibbons.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in
charge of arrangements.

Robert
"Rosie" Roseland, 89, died peacefully in
his sleep on Monday, July 8, 2013 at
Deerfield Retirement Community in
Urbandale.
Funeral services
will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at
McLaren's Chapel in West Des Moines with
entombment at Resthaven Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until
service time Tuesday.
Rosie was born
June 7, 1924, in Paulina, IA to John and
Floy Roseland. He graduated from Clear
Lake High School and went to work for
Duesenberg Construction helping build
the Alaskan Highway. When WWII started,
he enlisted and trained to be a pilot,
flying B-17 bombers over the Himalayas.
Following the war, Rosie enrolled at the
University of Iowa where he pledged Beta
Theta Pi, completed a degree in Business
and met the love of his life, Nina
Larimore. They were married for 62 years
until her death in 2011.
Rosie began his
career in sales, working for Ames
Concrete Products and joining Cretex
Companies, Inc. In 1975, he was promoted
to President and General Manager of Iowa
Concrete Products, a division of Cretex,
where he remained with the company until
his retirement. During his tenure at
Iowa Concrete Products, he was elected
President of Iowa's Associated General
Contractors (AGC) and to the Iowa
Highway Department's Hall of Fame.
Rosie was a
loving father and grandfather who was an
avid outdoorsman. He was a loyal
University of Iowa Hawkeye football fan
who rarely missed a game! He enjoyed
spending his summers on Lake Vermillion
in Northern MN and winters in Palm
Desert, CA.
He is survived by
his son, Craig (Cathy) of MN; daughter,
Anne (Mike) Thompson of California; two
grandchildren, Kate (Mathew)
Wachlarowicz and Robert Z. Roseland; and
a sister, Patty (Spud) Carrell of CA. He
was preceded in death by his parents;
brothers, Joe and Jack; wife, Nina and
son, Kurt.The family would like to thank
Deerfield Retirement Community for their
excellent care of Rosie in his final
years.
