She was a member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir, and was active in circle and ladies aid.

Holidays at the Berge Farm were always very special for all her friends and relatives. She thoroughly enjoyed cooking and baking for all.

Her special love was writing. She compiled the family trees for the Haugen and the Berge families. She also wrote poetry, humorous articles, skits, and co-authored “Seasons of a Family Cookbook” with her sister-in-law, Connie Berge.

Goodbye, I’ve had a wonderful time.

I bow my head with no regret

For He, who made me, knows the day

When I must go and cannot stay.

Creighton “Chic” Fox was born on Oct. 20, 1916, in Forest City to Clyde and Jennie (Smith) Fox. He was baptized in the Congregational Church and graduated from Forest City High School. His grandfather, father and uncles built roads in the area with 150 mules and horses. He and his older brothers spent time in the summer visiting the road gang. It was there he was nicknamed “Chic” because he had a pet chicken. The name stayed with him all his life.

He farmed with his father and sold Phisters seed corn.

On Aug. 12, 1941, he married Mary Byers of Garner at St. Boniface Catholic Church. He joined the Catholic Church at that time. The couple farmed five years before moving to Forest City in 1946. In 1951, they purchased the Ruby Evanson Mobile Gas Station three miles south of Forest City on Highway 69. They renamed it Fox Trading Post. During this time they raised horses and ponies, owning a registered quarterhorse from the Tom Elken’s Ranch of Grants, N.M., in the 1940s, a palomino named Plaudette’s Golden Fox.

Chic rode in parades and trail rides and entered many horse shows. One large horse show at Nashua proved exciting, winning first in the Palomino class of 13 entries, first in the Western Pleasure class of 21 entries and second in the English Pleasure class of 5 entries.

He served as president of the Rainbow Trail Riders in 1952 when the club was incorporated and belt buckles were issued. He was also active in the Garner Saddle Club.

He promoted rodeos, horse sales and professional wrestling matches out of Minneapolis at the Civic Auditorium with such stars as Vern Gagne, Tiny Mills and Bob Geigel. He worked at Kayot Forester five years and operated a USDA licensed kennel for 25 years, raising and buying litters of puppies and shipping to pet stores. He enjoyed spending time with his family and having coffee with friends.
